Finding arithmetic progressions in dense sets of integers
One of the central problems in additive combinatorics is to determine how large a subset of the first $N$ integers can be before it is forced to contain $k$ elements forming an arithmetic progression. Around 25 years ago, Gowers proved the first reasonable upper bounds in this problem for progressions of length four and longer. In this work, Gowers initiated the study of "higher-order Fourier analysis", which has developed over the past couple of decades into a rich theory with numerous other combinatorial applications. I will report on some very recent progress in higher-order Fourier analysis and how it has led to the first ever quantitative improvement on Gowers's upper bounds when $k\geq 5$.

Mutually Abelian-Bordered Binary Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A word is said to be bordered if it contains a nonempty proper prefix that is also a suffix. A pair of words $(u, v)$ is said to be mutually bordered if there exists a word that is a nonempty proper prefix of $u$ and suffix of $v$, and there exists a word that is a nonempty proper suffix of $u$ and prefix of $v$. Recently, Gabric studied the number of mutually bordered pairs. In this work, we extend the concept of mutually bordered pairs to abelian setting, and determine the number of mutually abelian-bordered pairs of binary words using lattice paths. We also find the number of unbordered pairs in this context.

A weak regularity lemma for polynomials
A regularity lemma for polynomials provides a decomposition in terms of a bounded number of approximately independent polynomials. Such regularity lemmas play an important role in numerous results, yet suffer from the familiar shortcoming of having tower-type bounds or worse. In this paper we design a new, weaker regularity lemma with strong bounds. The new regularity lemma in particular provides means to quantitatively study the curves contained in the image of a polynomial map, which is beyond the reach of standard methods. Applications include strong bounds for a problem of Karam on generalized rank, as well as a new method to obtain upper bounds for fan-in parameters in arithmetic circuits. For example, we show that if the image of a polynomial map $\mathbf{P} \colon \mathbb{F}^n \to \mathbb{F}^m$ of degree $d$ does not contain a line, then $\mathbf{P}$ can be computed by a depth-$4$ arithmetic formula with bottom fan-in at most $d/2$ and top fan-in at most $(2m)^{C(d)}$ (with $C(d)=2^{(1+o(1))d}$). One implication of our work is a certain ``barrier'' to arithmetic circuit lower bounds, in terms of the smallest degree of a polynomial curve contained in the image of the given polynomial map.

Judicious partitions for restricted self-sumsets in cyclic groups
We study the minimax problem for restricted two-fold self-sumsets in $k$-colorings of $\mathbb{Z}_n$. For primes $p$ with $2\le k\le p$ we determine the exact minimum $\max\{0,\,2\lceil p/k\rceil-3\}$. For general $n$ (with $m=\lceil n/k\rceil$) we bound the optimum between a size term $\min\{p(n),\,2m-3\}$ and a periodicity term $f\big(n/q(n,k)\big)$, and show these bounds are tight when $2m-3\le p(n)$ or $f\big(n/q(n,k)\big)\le \min\{p(n),\,2m-3\}$. We further prove a stability inequality and a threshold theorem that force concentration in a single subgroup coset near the periodic scale. In the prime case with $m\ge 5$ and $2m-3<p$, every optimal coloring contains a class of size $m$ that is an arc (an arithmetic progression up to an affine automorphism). Our approach combines the restricted Erdős--Heilbronn phenomenon with block/coset colorings and an injectivity window.

The unavoidable drawings of complete multipartite graphs
In a simple drawing of a graph every pair of edges intersect each other in at most one point, which is either a common endvertex or a proper crossing. For each positive integer $n$, Negami identified a drawing $B_n$ of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, and proved that if $N$ is sufficiently large, then every drawing of $K_{N,N}$ contains a drawing of $K_{n,n}$ weakly isomorphic to $B_n$. Thus $B_n$ is (up to weak isomorphism) the only {\em unavoidable} drawing of $K_{n,n}$. We extend this result to complete multipartite graphs, characterizing their unavoidable drawings.

Strong chordality in tournaments and multipartite tournaments with possible loops
Strongly chordal digraphs are included in the class of chordal digraphs and generalize strongly chordal graphs and chordal bipartite graphs. They are the digraphs that admit a linear ordering of its vertex set for which their adjacency matrix does not contain the $Γ$ matrix as a submatrix. In general, it is not clear if these digraphs can be recognized in polynomial time. We focus on multipartite tournaments with possible loops. We give a polynomial-time recognition algorithm and a forbidden induced subgraph characterization of the strong chordality for each of the following cases: tournaments with possible loops, reflexive multipartite tournaments, irreflexive bipartite tournaments, irreflexive tournaments minus one arc, and balanced digraphs. In addition, we prove that in a strongly chordal digraph the minimum size of a total dominating set equals the maximum number of disjoint in-neighborhoods, and this number can be calculated in linear time given a $Γ$-free ordering of the input graph.

Spectral extrema of graphs of given even size forbidding H(4,3)
A graph is sad to be $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $H(k,3)$ be the graph formed by taking a cycle of length $k$ and a triangle on a common vertex. Li, Lu and Peng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113680] proved that if $G$ is an $H(3,3)$-free graph of size $m \geq 8$, then the spectral radius $ρ(G) \leq \frac{1+\sqrt{4 m-3}}{2}$ with equality if and only if $G \cong S_{\frac{m+3}{2}, 2}$, where $S_{\frac{m+3}{2}, 2}=K_2 \vee \frac{m-1}{2}K_1$. Note that the bound is attainable only when $m$ is odd. Recently, Pirzada and Rehman [Comput. Appl. Math. 44 (2025) 295] proved that if $G$ is an $\{H(3,3),H(4,3)\}$-free graph of even size $m \geq 10$, then $ρ(G) \leq ρ^{\prime}(m)$ with equality if and only if $G \cong S_{\frac{m+4}{2}, 2}^{-}$, where $ρ^{\prime}(m)$ is the largest root of $x^4-m x^2-(m-2) x+\frac{m}{2}-1=0$, and $S_{\frac{m+4}{2}, 2}^{-}$ is the graph obtained from $S_{\frac{m+4}{2}, 2}$ by deleting an edge incident to a vertex of degree two. In this paper, we improve the result of Pirzada and Rehman by showing that if $G$ is an $H(4,3)$-free graph of even size $m \geq 38$ without isolated vertices, then $ρ(G) \leq ρ^{\prime}(m)$ with equality if and only if $G \cong S_{\frac{m+4}{2}, 2}^{-}$.

Smaller universal posets
We show that there is a constant $C>0$ such that for each integer $n\geq 1$, there is a poset on at most $2^{2n/3+C\sqrt{n}}$ elements that contains each $n$-element poset as an (induced) subposet.

Planar induced paths via a decomposition into non-crossing ordered graphs
In any graph, the maximum size of an induced path is bounded by the maximum size of a path. However, in the general case, one cannot find a converse bound, even up to an arbitrary function, as evidenced by the case of cliques. Galvin, Rival and Sands proved in 1982 that, when restricted to weakly sparse graphs, such a converse property actually holds. In this paper, we consider the maximal function $f$ such that any planar graph (and in general, any graph of bounded genus) containing a path on $n$ vertices contains an induced path of size $f(n)$, and prove that $f(n) \in Θ\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}\right)$ by providing a lower bound matching the upper bound obtained by Esperet, Lemoine and Maffray, up to a constant factor. We obtain these tight bounds by analyzing graphs ordered along a Hamiltonian path that admit an edge partition into a bounded number of sets without crossing edges. In particular, we prove that when such an ordered graph can be partitioned into $2k$ sets of non-crossing edges, then it contains an induced path of size $Ω_k\left(\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}\right)^{1/k} \right)$ and provide almost matching upper bounds.

Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.

Polynomial actions of rings of integers of global fields and quasirandomness of Paley-type graphs
The goal of this paper is to undertake an in-depth study of the phenomenon behind the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem, which, in its modern form due to Kamae and Mendès-France, states that if $E$ is a set of integers with positive density and $P$ is an intersective polynomial, then there are distinct elements $x, y \in E$ such that $x - y = P(n)$ for some some $n$. In this paper, we identify an algebraic framework (rings of integers of global fields) for Furstenberg--Sárközy-type theorems. One of our main results establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for a polynomial to satisfy the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over the ring of integers of a global field, providing an extension of the result of Kamae and Mendès-France. The Furstenberg--Sárközy phenomenon goes beyond infinite rings and has interesting additional aspects in finite rings. As an example, classical exponential sum estimates can be used to show that large subsets of finite fields contain the asymptotically ``correct'' number of pairs $(x,y)$ whose difference is a square. In previous work, the class of polynomials satisfying this strong form of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite fields was classified. In the present paper, we establish asymptotic results characterizing sequences of finite principal ideal rings that produce ``correct'' statistics in the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem and show that these families are much more general than finite fields. As an application of our enhanced forms of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite rings, we produce new families of examples of quasirandom graphs of algebraic origin. The production of these new examples hinges on a two-way connection between asymptotic total ergodicity -- the phenomenon responsible for enhanced versions of the Furstenberg--Sárközy theorem over finite fields and rings -- and quasirandomness.
Colour-biased Hamilton cycles in dense graphs and random graphs
A classical result of Dirac says that every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains a Hamilton cycle. A `discrepancy' version of Dirac's theorem was shown by Balogh--Csaba--Jing--Pluhár, Freschi--Hyde--Lada--Treglown, and Gishboliner--Krivelevich--Michaeli as follows. Every $r$-colouring of the edge set of every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2r} + o(1))n$ contains a Hamilton cycle where one of the colours appears at least $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{r}$ times. In this paper, we generalize this result by asymptotically determining the maximum possible value $f_{r,α}(n)$ for every $α\in [\frac{1}{2}, 1]$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edge set of every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $αn$ contains a Hamilton cycle where one of the colours appears at least $f_{r,α}(n)$ times. In particular, we show that $f_{r,α}(n) = (1-o(1)) \min\{(2α- 1)n, \frac{2αn}{r}, \frac{2n}{r+1}\}$ for every $α\in [\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2r}, 1]$. A graph $H$ is called an $α$-residual subgraph of a graph $G$ if $d_H(v)\ge αd_{G[V(H)]}(v)$ for every $v\in V(H)$. Extending Dirac's theorem in the setting of random graphs, Lee and Sudakov showed the following. The Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, with $p$ above the Hamiltonicity threshold, typically has the property that every $(\frac{1}{2} +o(1))$-residual spanning subgraph contains a Hamilton cycle. Motivated by this, we prove the following random version of our `discrepancy' result. The random graph $G \sim G(n,p)$, with $p$ above the Hamiltonicity threshold, typically satisfies that every $r$-colouring of the edge set of every $α$-residual spanning subgraph of $G$ contains a Hamilton cycle where one of the colours appears at least $f_{r,α}(n)$ times.

Clique-factors in graphs with low $K_{\ell}$-independence number
Given $r\in \mathbb{N}$ with $r\geq 4$, we show that there exists $n_0\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every $n\geq n_0$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq (\frac{1}{2}+o(1))n$ and $α_{r-2}(G)=o(n)$ contains a $K_{r}$-factor. This resolves the first open case of a question proposed by Nenadov and Pehova, and reiterated by Knierm and Su. We further introduce two lower bound constructions that, along with some known results, fully resolve a question presented by Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh.

On the partition regularity of arithmetic progressions and linear equations in k-IP-sets
In this paper, we provide versions of Van der Waerden's theorem and Rado's theorem for finite colorings of IP-sets and k-IP-sets. Here, by an IP-set we mean a set of integers that contains all finite sums of an infinite subset of N, and we define k-IP-sets similarly to IP-sets but allowing each summand to appear with multiplicity bounded by k - 1.

On saturation problems for matchings with regularity constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if $G$ is $F$-free but for any edge $e$ in the complement of $G$ the graph $G + e$ contains $F$. Gerbner et al. (Discrete Math., 345 (2022), 112921) initiated the study of $rsat(n,F)$, the minimum number of edges in a regular $n$-vertex $F$-saturated graph, and they posed the problem of for which graphs $rsat(n, F )$ exists. Regarding this problem, we obtain the precise value of $rsat(n,(m+1)K_2)$ for all possible cases, where $(m+1)K_2$ denotes a matching of size $m+1$. As a natural counterpart, we also determine the maximum number of edges in a regular $n$-vertex $(m+1)K_2$-free graph for all $m\ge 1$ and $n\ge 2m+2$.

Double signs of Hamiltonian circles in doubly signed complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study Hamiltonian circles in the doubly signed complete graph $Σ_n = (K_n, σ, \mathbb{F}_2^2)$. A circle's double sign is defined as the sum of its edge labels. I establish conditions under which Hamiltonian circles realize all four possible double signs and prove that this occurs when the set of triangle double signs contains at least three distinct values. The proof is based on an analysis of triangle bases of the binary cycle space, structural properties of $K_4$ subgraphs, and explicit Hamiltonian constructions.

Eccentricity spectral properties of $\mathcal{C}$-graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cograph is a simple graph that contains no induced path on four vertices. In this paper, we consider $\mathcal{C}$-graphs, which are a specific class of cographs, defined as $$\overline{\overline{\overline{K_{α_{1}}}\cup K_{α_{2}}}\cup \cdots \cup K_{α_{2k}}},$$ %\text{ where } k \geq 2, α_{2k}\geq 2,$$ where $k \geq 2$, $α_{2k} \geq 2$, and $K_{α_{i}}$ denotes the complete graph on $α_{i}$ vertices. We investigate the spectral properties of the eccentricity matrix of this particular class of cographs. Additionally, we determine the irreducibility and inertia of the eccentricity matrix of $\mathcal{C}$-graphs. Furthermore, we identify an interval $(-1-\sqrt{2},-2)\cup (-2,0)$ in which these graphs have no eccentricity eigenvalues.
Improper coloring of toroidal graphs
A graph $G$ is called $(d_1,\dots,d_k)$-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into $k$ sets $V_1,\dots,V_k$ such that $Δ(\langle V_i\rangle_G)\leq d_i, i\in \{1,\dots, k\}$. If $d_1 = \dots = d_k = m$ we say that $G$ is $k$-colorable with defect $m$. A coloring with at least one $d_i, i\in \{1,\dots, k\}$, greater than $0$ is called an improper coloring. It is known that toroidal graphs are properly $7$-colorable, therefore they are $7$-colorable with defect $0$. It was also proved that toroidal graphs are $5$-colorable with defect $1$ and $3$-colorable with defect $2$. The question whether they are $4$-colorable with defect $1$ remains open. In this paper we focus on improper coloring of toroidal graphs with values of defects being not all equal. We prove that these graphs are $(0,0,0,0,0,1^*)$-colorable, $(0,0,0,0,2)$-colorable and $(0,0,0,1^*,1^*)$-colorable (a star means that there is an improper coloring in which subgraph induced by the corresponding color class contains at most one edge). Choi and Esperet in [Improper coloring of graphs on surfaces, J. Graph Theory $91(1)\,(2019), 16-34$] proved that every graph of Euler genus $eg > 0$ is $(0, 0, 0, 9eg - 4)$-colorable. From this result it follows that toroidal graphs are $(0,0,0,14)$-colorable. We decreased the value $14$ and proved that toroidal graphs are $(0,0,0,4)$-colorable. We also show that all 6-regular toroidal graphs except $K_7$ and $T_{11}$ are $(0,0,0,1)$-colorable. Finally, we discuss the colorability of graphs embeddable on $N_1$ and show that they are $(0,0,0,2)$-colorable.

Sharp lower bounds and extremal graphs for the generalized $k$-independence number
A vertex set $S$ is a generalized $k$-independent set if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ contains no tree on $k$ vertices. The generalized $k$-independence number $α_k(G)$ is the maximum size of such a set. For a tree $T$ with $n$ vertices, Bock et al. [J. Graph Theory 103 (2023) 661-673] and Li et al. [Taiwanese J. Math. 27 (2023) 647-683] independently showed that $α_3(G)\geq \frac{2}{3}n$ and identified the extremal trees that attain this lower bound. Subsequently, Li and Zhou [Appl. Math. Comput. 484 (2025) 129018] established that $α_4(T) \geq \frac{3}{4}n$ and they further characterized all trees achieving this bound. This result was recently extended by Huang, who proved that $α_4(G)\geq \frac{3}{4}(n-ω(G))$ holds for every $n$-vertex graph, where $ω(G)$ denotes the dimension of the cycle space of $G.$ The extremal graphs attaining this lower bound were also fully characterized. Based on these findings, Huang proposed a conjecture concerning a lower bound for $α_k(G)\ (k\geq2)$ together with the corresponding extremal graphs, which naturally generalizes all the aforementioned results. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture here. We further quantify strict improvements over this bound when the equality conditions fail, and we provide a linear-time algorithm that constructs a generalized $k$-independent set of size at least $\left\lceil\frac{k-1}{k}\left(n-ω(G)\right)\right\rceil$.
New Helly-type results for discrete boxes: Quantitative colorful and $(p,q)$-variants
In 2008, Halman showed that for any finite set $P\subset \mathbb R^d$ and any finite family $\mathcal{B}$ of axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if the intersection of $P$ and any subfamily $\mathcal{B}' \subseteq\mathcal{B}$ of size at most $2d$ is non-empty, then the intersection of $P$ and $\mathcal{B}$ is also non-empty. Very recently Edwards and Soberón initiated the study of quantitative colorful version for $2d$ families, $(p,q)$-type variation for $p\geq q\geq d+1$, and other extensions of this Helly-type result by Halman. In this paper, we study the quantitative colorful Halman problem for $2d-1$ families as well its $(p,q)$-type variation for $p\geq q\geq 2$. Specifically, our main result asserts that for any finite set $P$ and finite families of boxes $\mathcal{B}_1,\dots,\mathcal{B}_{2d-1}$ in $\mathbb R^d$, where $d\geq 2$, if every transversal $\mathcal{B}$ for the families has an intersection $\bigcap \mathcal{B}$ containing at least $n$ points of $P$, then there exist $j\in[2d-1]$ and a subset of $P$ of size at most \[ 2n+\Big\lfloor \frac{n-1}{d \cdot 2^{d-1}} \Big\rfloor, \] such that each box of $\mathcal{B}_j$ contains at least $n$ points of this subset.
