Hypergraph Turán numbers of vertex disjoint cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Turán number of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $e{x_k}\left({n;H} \right)$, is the maximum number of edges in any $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ on $n$ vertices which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}^{\left(k \right)}$ denote the family of all $k$-uniform minimal cycles of length $\ell$, $\mathcal{S}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_r)$ denote the family of hypergraphs consisting of unions of $r$ vertex disjoint minimal cycles of length $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_r$, respectively, and $\mathbb{C}_{\ell}^{\left(k \right)}$ denote a $k$-uniform linear cycle of length $\ell$. We determine precisely $e{x_k}\left({n;\mathcal{S}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_r)} \right)$ and $e{x_k}\left({n;\mathbb{C}_{\ell_1}^{\left(k \right)}, \ldots, \mathbb{C}_{\ell_r}^{\left(k \right)}} \right)$ for sufficiently large $n$. The results extend recent results of Füredi and Jiang who determined the Turán numbers for single $k$-uniform minimal cycles and linear cycles.

A relative Szemerédi theorem
Published in Geom. Funct. Anal. 25 (2015), 733-762 • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated Green-Tao theorem states that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions in the primes. One of the main ingredients in their proof is a relative Szemerédi theorem which says that any subset of a pseudorandom set of integers of positive relative density contains long arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we give a simple proof of a strengthening of the relative Szemerédi theorem, showing that a much weaker pseudorandomness condition is sufficient. Our strengthened version can be applied to give the first relative Szemerédi theorem for $k$-term arithmetic progressions in pseudorandom subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ of density $N^{-c_k}$. The key component in our proof is an extension of the regularity method to sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs, which we believe to be interesting in its own right. From this we derive a relative extension of the hypergraph removal lemma. This is a strengthening of an earlier theorem used by Tao in his proof that the Gaussian primes contain arbitrarily shaped constellations and, by standard arguments, allows us to deduce the relative Szemerédi theorem.
Canonical tree-decompositions of finite graphs II. Essential parts
Published • View Publication • BIB
In Part I of this series we described three algorithms that construct canonical tree-decompositions of graphs which distinguish all their k-blocks and tangles of order k. We now establish bounds on the number of parts in these decompositions that contain no such block or tangle, and determine conditions under which such parts contain nothing but a k-block.
$k$-Blocks: a connectivity invariant for graphs
Published in SIDMA 28 (2014), 1876-1891 • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-block in a graph $G$ is a maximal set of at least $k$ vertices no two of which can be separated in $G$ by fewer than $k$ other vertices. The block number $β(G)$ of $G$ is the largest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-block. We investigate how $β$ interacts with density invariants of graphs, such as their minimum or average degree. We further present algorithms that decide whether a graph has a $k$-block, or which find all its $k$-blocks. The connectivity invariant $β(G)$ has a dual width invariant, the block-width ${\rm bw}(G)$ of $G$. Our algorithms imply the duality theorem $β= {\rm bw}$: a graph has a block-decomposition of width and adhesion $< k$ if and only if it contains no $k$-block.

The least eigenvalue of graphs whose complements are unicyclic
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph in a certain graph class is called minimizing if the least eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph attains the minimum among all graphs in that class. Bell {\it et al.} have characterized the minimizing graphs in the class of connected graphs of order $n$ and size $m$, whose complements are either disconnected or contain a clique of order at least $n/2$. In this paper we discuss the minimizing graphs of a special class of graphs of order $n$ whose complements are connected and contains exactly one cycle (namely the the class $\mathscr {U}^{c}_{n}$ of graphs whose complements are unicyclic), and characterize the unique minimizing graph in $\mathscr {U}^{c}_{n}$ when $n \geq 20$.

Cellular structure for the Herzog--Takayama Resolution
Published • View Publication • BIB
Herzog and Takayama constructed explicit resolutions for the class of so called ideals with a regular linear quotient. This class contains all matroidal and stable ideals. The resolutions of matroidal and stable ideals are known to be cellular. In this note we show that the Herzog--Takayama resolution is also cellular.

A combinatorial version of the colorful Caratheodory theorem
We give the following extension of Barany's colorful Caratheodory theorem: Let M be an oriented matroid and N a matroid with rank function r, both defined on the same ground set V and satisfying rank(M) < rank(N). If every subset A of V with r(V - A) < rank (M) contains a positive circuit of M, then some independent set of N contains a positive circuit of M.
Invariant Gaussian processes and independent sets on regular graphs of large girth
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms Volume 47, Issue 2, pages 284-303, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every 3-regular, n-vertex simple graph with sufficiently large girth contains an independent set of size at least 0.4361n. (The best known bound is 0.4352n.) In fact, computer simulation suggests that the bound our method provides is about 0.438n. Our method uses invariant Gaussian processes on the d-regular tree that satisfy the eigenvector equation at each vertex for a certain eigenvalue λ. We show that such processes can be approximated by i.i.d. factors provided that $|λ| \leq 2\sqrt{d-1}$. We then use these approximations for $λ= -2\sqrt{d-1}$ to produce factor of i.i.d. independent sets on regular trees.
Inversion polynomials for 321-avoiding permutations: addendum
This addendum contains results about the inversion number and major index polynomials for permutations avoiding 321 which did not fit well into the original paper. In particular, we consider symmetry, unimodality, behavior modulo 2, and signed enumeration.

Hyperplanes and hamiltonian circuits in Perfect Matroid Designs with fixed basis
We study the number of hamiltonian circuits, containing a fixed basis, and the number of hyperplanes, which do not contain a fixed basis in perfect matroid designs. Projective and affine finite geometries are considered as examples of such matroids. We give algorithms to find the hyperplanes and the hamiltonian circuits in such cases.
An Extension of the Blow-up Lemma to arrangeable graphs
The Blow-up Lemma established by Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi in 1997 is an important tool for the embedding of spanning subgraphs of bounded maximum degree. Here we prove several generalisations of this result concerning the embedding of a-arrangeable graphs, where a graph is called a-arrangeable if its vertices can be ordered in such a way that the neighbours to the right of any vertex v have at most a neighbours to the left of v in total. Examples of arrangeable graphs include planar graphs and, more generally, graphs without a K_s-subdivision for constant s. Our main result shows that a-arrangeable graphs with maximum degree at most sqrt(n)/log(n) can be embedded into corresponding systems of super-regular pairs. This is optimal up to the logarithmic factor. We also present two applications. We prove that any large enough graph G with minimum degree at least ((r-1)/r+γ)n contains an F-factor of every a-arrangeable r-chromatic graph F with at most ξn vertices and maximum degree at most sqrt(n)/log(n), as long as ξ is sufficiently small compared to γ/(ar). This extends a result of Alon and Yuster [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 66(2),269-282, 1996]. Moreover, we show that for constant p the random graph G(n,p) is universal for the class of a-arrangeable n-vertex graphs H of maximum degree at most ξn/log(n), as long as ξ is sufficiently small compared to p/a.

Spanning embeddings of arrangeable graphs with sublinear bandwidth
The Bandwidth Theorem of Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz [Mathematische Annalen 343 (1), 175-205] gives minimum degree conditions for the containment of spanning graphs H with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. We generalise this result to a-arrangeable graphs H with Δ(H)<sqrt(n)/log(n), where n is the number of vertices of H. Our result implies that sufficiently large n-vertex graphs G with minimum degree at least (3/4+γ)n contain almost all planar graphs on n vertices as subgraphs. Using techniques developed by Allen, Brightwell and Skokan [Combinatorica, to appear] we can also apply our methods to show that almost all planar graphs H have Ramsey number at most 12|H|. We obtain corresponding results for graphs embeddable on different orientable surfaces.

Symmetries of statistics on lattice paths between two boundaries
Published in Adv. Math. 287 (2016), 347-388 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that on the set of lattice paths with steps N=(0,1) and E=(1,0) that lie between two fixed boundaries T and B (which are themselves lattice paths), the statistics `number of E steps shared with B' and `number of E steps shared with T' have a symmetric joint distribution. To do so, we give an involution that switches these statistics, preserves additional parameters, and generalizes to paths that contain steps S=(0,-1) at prescribed x-coordinates. We also show that a similar equidistribution result for path statistics follows from the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is independent of the order of its ground set. We extend the two theorems to k-tuples of paths between two boundaries, and we give some applications to Dyck paths, generalizing a result of Deutsch, to watermelon configurations, to pattern-avoiding permutations, and to the generalized Tamari lattice. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Nicolás about the distribution of degrees of k consecutive vertices in k-triangulations of a convex n-gon. To achieve this goal, we provide a new statistic-preserving bijection between certain k-tuples of non-crossing paths and k-flagged semistandard Young tableaux, which is based on local moves reminiscent of jeu de taquin.

Almost all k-cop-win graphs contain a dominating set of cardinality k
We consider $k$-cop-win graphs in the binomial random graph $G(n,1/2).$ It is known that almost all cop-win graphs contain a universal vertex. We generalize this result and prove that for every $k \in N$, almost all $k$-cop-win graphs contain a dominating set of cardinality $k$. From this it follows that the asymptotic number of labelled $k$-cop-win graphs of order $n$ is equal to $(1+o(1)) (1-2^{-k})^{-k} {n \choose k} 2^{n^2/2 - (1/2-\log_2(1-2^{-k})) n}$.

Immersions in highly edge connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of how much edge connectivity is necessary to force a graph G to contain a fixed graph H as an immersion. We show that if the maximum degree in H is D, then all the examples of D-edge connected graphs which do not contain H as a weak immersion must have a tree-like decomposition called a tree-cut decomposition of bounded width. If we consider strong immersions, then it is easy to see that there are arbitrarily highly edge connected graphs which do not contain a fixed clique K_t as a strong immersion. We give a structure theorem which roughly characterizes those highly edge connected graphs which do not contain K_t as a strong immersion.

Repeated columns and an old chestnut

Let $t\ge 1$ be a given integer. Let ${\cal F}$ be a family of subsets of $[m]=\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$. Assume that for every pair of disjoint sets $S,T\subset [m]$ with $|S|=|T|=k$, there do not exist $2t$ sets in ${\cal F}$ where $t$ subsets of ${\cal F}$ contain $S$ and are disjoint from $T$ and $t$ subsets of ${\cal F}$ contain $T$ and are disjoint from $S$. We show that $|{\cal F}|$ is $O(m^{k})$. Our main new ingredient is allowing, during the inductive proof, multisets of subsets of $[m]$ where the multiplicity of a given set is bounded by $t-1$. We use a strong stability result of Anstee and Keevash. This is further evidence for a conjecture of Anstee and Sali. These problems can be stated in the language of matrices Let $t\cdot M$ denote $t$ copies of the matrix $M$ concatenated together. We have established the conjecture for those configurations $t\cdot F$ for any $k\times 2$ (0,1)-matrix $F$.
Linear Clique-Width for Hereditary Classes of Cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class of cographs is known to have unbounded linear clique-width. We prove that a hereditary class of cographs has bounded linear clique-width if and only if it does not contain all quasi-threshold graphs or their complements. The proof borrows ideas from the enumeration of permutation classes.
Squares and difference sets in finite fields

For infinitely many primes $p=4k+1$ we give a slightly improved upper bound for the maximal cardinality of a set $B\subset \ZZ_p$ such that the difference set $B-B$ contains only quadratic residues. Namely, instead of the "trivial" bound $|B|\leq \sqrt{p}$ we prove $|B|\leq \sqrt{p}-1$, under suitable conditions on $p$. The new bound is valid for approximately three quarters of the primes $p=4k+1$.

On the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv invariant and zero-sum Ramsey number for intersecting families
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and let $m>0$ with $\exp(G)\mid m$. Let $s_{m}(G)$ be the generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv invariant which denotes the smallest positive integer $d$ such that any sequence of elements in $G$ of length $d$ contains a subsequence of length $m$ with sum zero in $G$. For any integer $r>0$, let $\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)}$ be the collection of all $r$-uniform intersecting families of size $m$. Let $R(\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)},G)$ be the smallest positive integer $d$ such that any $G$-coloring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_{d}^{(r)}$ yields a zero-sum copy of some intersecting family in $\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)}$. Among other results, we mainly prove that $Ω(s_{m}(G))-1\leq R (\mathcal{I}_{m}^{(r)}, \ G)\leq Ω(s_{m}(G)),$ where $Ω(s_{m}(G))$ denotes the least positive integer $n$ such that ${n-1 \choose r-1}\geq s_{m}(G)$, and we show that if $r\mid Ω(s_{m}(G))-1$ then $R (\mathcal{I}_{m}^{(r)}, \ G)= Ω(s_{m}(G))$.

Growth of Primitive Elements in Free Groups
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2014) 90 (1): 89-104 • View Publication • BIB
In the free group $F_k$, an element is said to be primitive if it belongs to a free generating set. In this paper, we describe what a generic primitive element looks like. We prove that up to conjugation, a random primitive word of length $N$ contains one of the letters exactly once asymptotically almost surely (as $N \to \infty$). This also solves a question from the list `Open problems in combinatorial group theory' [Baumslag-Myasnikov-Shpilrain 02']. Let $p_{k,N}$ be the number of primitive words of length $N$ in $F_k$. We show that for $k \ge 3$, the exponential growth rate of $p_{k,N}$ is $2k-3$. Our proof also works for giving the exact growth rate of the larger class of elements belonging to a proper free factor.
