For given integers k, l we ask whether every large graph with a sufficiently small number of k-cliques and k-anticliques must contain an induced copy of every l-vertex graph. Here we prove this claim for k=l=3 with a sharp bound. A similar phenomenon is established as well for tournaments with k=l=4.
Hamilton Cycles in Random Lifts of Graphs
For a graph $G$ the random $n$-lift of $G$ is obtained by replacing each of its vertices by a set of $n$ vertices, and joining a pair of sets by a random matching whenever the corresponding vertices of $G$ are adjacent. We show that asymptotically almost surely the random lift of a graph $G$ is hamiltonian, provided $G$ has the minimum degree at least $5$ and contains two disjoint Hamiltonian cycles whose union is not a bipartite graph.
(c-)AND: A new graph model
In this document, we study the scope of the following graph model: each vertex is assigned to a box in a metric space and to a representative element that belongs to that box. Two vertices are connected by an edge if and only if its respective boxes contain the opposite representative element. We focus our study on the case where boxes (and therefore representative elements) associated to vertices are spread in the Euclidean line. We give both, a combinatorial and an intersection characterization of the model. Based on these characterizations, we determine graph families that contain the model (e. g., boxicity 2 graphs) and others that the new model contains (e. g., rooted directed path). We also study the particular case where each representative element is the center of its respective box. In this particular case, we provide constructive representations for interval, block and outerplanar graphs. Finally, we show that the general and the particular model are not equivalent by constructing a graph family that separates the two cases.
Valid Orderings of Real Hyperplane Arrangements

Given a real finite hyperplane arrangement A and a point p not on any of the hyperplanes, we define an arrangement vo(A,p), called the *valid order arrangement*, whose regions correspond to the different orders in which a line through p can cross the hyperplanes in A. If A is the set of affine spans of the facets of a convex polytope P and p lies in the interior of P, then the valid orderings with respect to p are just the line shellings of p where the shelling line contains p. When p is sufficiently generic, the intersection lattice of vo(A,p) is the *Dilworth truncation* of the semicone of A. Various applications and examples are given. For instance, we determine the maximum number of line shellings of a d-polytope with m facets when the shelling line contains a fixed point p. If P is the order polytope of a poset, then the sets of facets visible from a point involve a generalization of chromatic polynomials related to list colorings.

Given a finite simple graph one can associate the edge ideal. In this paper we prove that a graded Betti number of the edge ideal does not vanish if the original graph contains a set of complete bipartite subgraphs with some conditions. Also we give a combinatorial description for the projective dimension of the edge ideals of unmixed bipartite graphs.
A Note on Graphs of Linear Rank-Width 1
We prove that a connected graph has linear rank-width 1 if and only if it is a distance-hereditary graph and its split decomposition tree is a path. An immediate consequence is that one can decide in linear time whether a graph has linear rank-width at most 1, and give an obstruction if not. Other immediate consequences are several characterisations of graphs of linear rank-width 1. In particular a connected graph has linear rank-width 1 if and only if it is locally equivalent to a caterpillar if and only if it is a vertex-minor of a path [O-joung Kwon and Sang-il Oum, Graphs of small rank-width are pivot-minors of graphs of small tree-width, arxiv:1203.3606] if and only if it does not contain the co-K_2 graph, the Net graph and the 5-cycle graph as vertex-minors [Isolde Adler, Arthur M. Farley and Andrzej Proskurowski, Obstructions for linear rank-width at most 1, arxiv:1106.2533].
Enumeration of symmetric centered rhombus tilings of a hexagon
A rhombus tiling of a hexagon is said to be centered if it contains the central lozenge. We compute the number of vertically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a, b, a, a, b, a$ which are centered. When $a$ is odd and $b$ is even, this shows that the probability that a random vertically symmetric rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered is exactly the same as the probability that a random rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered. This also leads to a factorization theorem for the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon which are centered.
Asymptotics for the number of spanning trees in circulant graphs and degenerating d-dimensional discrete tori

In this paper we obtain precise asymptotics for certain families of graphs, namely circulant graphs and degenerating discrete tori. The asymptotics contain interesting constants from number theory among which some can be interpreted as corresponding values for continuous limiting objects. We answer one question formulated in a paper from Atajan, Yong and Inaba in [1] and formulate a conjecture in relation to the paper from Zhang, Yong and Golin [21]. A crucial ingredient in the proof is to use the matrix tree theorem and express the combinatorial laplacian determinant in terms of Bessel functions. A non-standard Poisson summation formula and limiting properties of theta functions are then used to evaluate the asymptotics.
Generalized splines on arbitrary graphs

Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals of a commutative ring. We introduce a generalized spline, which is a vertex-labeling of G by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the corresponding edge ideal. Generalized splines arise naturally in combinatorics (em algebraic splines of Billera and others) and in algebraic topology (certain equivariant cohomology rings, described by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and others). The central question of this manuscript asks when an arbitrary edge-labeled graph has nontrivial generalized splines. The answer is `always', and we prove the stronger result that generalized splines contain a free submodule whose rank is the number of vertices in G. We describe all generalized splines when G is a tree, and give several ways to describe the ring of generalized splines as an intersection of generalized splines for simpler subgraphs of G. We also present a new tool which we call the GKM matrix, an analogue of the incidence matrix of a graph, and end with open questions.
Random subgraphs make identification affordable

An identifying code of a graph is a dominating set which uniquely determines all the vertices by their neighborhood within the code. Whereas graphs with large minimum degree have small domination number, this is not the case for the identifying code number (the size of a smallest identifying code), which indeed is not even a monotone parameter with respect to graph inclusion.
We show that every graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, maximum degree $Δ=ω(1)$ and minimum degree $δ\geq c\logΔ$, for some constant $c>0$, contains a large spanning subgraph which admits an identifying code with size $O\left(\frac{n\logΔ}δ\right)$. In particular, if $δ=Θ(n)$, then $G$ has a dense spanning subgraph with identifying code $O\left(\log n\right)$, namely, of asymptotically optimal size. The subgraph we build is created using a probabilistic approach, and we use an interplay of various random methods to analyze it. Moreover we show that the result is essentially best possible, both in terms of the number of deleted edges and the size of the identifying code.

Completions of epsilon-dense partial Latin squares; quasirandom k-colorings of graphs
A classical question in combinatorics is the following:\ given a partial Latin square $P$, when can we complete $P$ to a Latin square $L$? In this paper, we investigate the class of \textbf{$ε$-dense partial Latin squares}:\ partial Latin squares in which each symbol, row, and column contains no more than $εn$-many nonblank cells. Based on a conjecture of Nash-Williams, Daykin and Häggkvist conjectured that all $\frac{1}{4}$-dense partial Latin squares are completable. In this paper, we will discuss the proof methods and results used in previous attempts to resolve this conjecture, introduce a novel technique derived from a paper by Jacobson and Matthews on generating random Latin squares, and use this novel technique to study $ ε$-dense partial Latin squares that contain no more than $δn^2$ filled cells in total.
In particular, we construct completions for all $ ε$-dense partial Latin squares containing no more than $δn^2$ filled cells in total, given that $ε< \frac{1}{12}, δ< \frac{ \left(1-12ε\right)^{2}}{10409}$. In particular, we show that all $9.8 \cdot 10^{-5}$-dense partial Latin squares are completable.
We further show that such completions can always be found in polynomial time. This contrasts a result of Colbourn. In Chapter 3, we strengthen Colbourn's result to the claim that completing an arbitrary $\left(\frac{1}{2} + ε\right)$-dense partial Latin square is NP-complete, for any $ε> 0$.
Additional results on triangulations of graphs are found.
In an unrelated vein, Chapter 6 explores the class of quasirandom graphs. In specific, we study quasirandom $k$-edge colorings, and create an analogue of Chung, Graham and Wilson's well-known results for such colorings.

The Ramsey number r(K_s,Q_n) is the smallest positive integer N such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph K_N on N vertices contains either a red n-dimensional hypercube, or a blue clique on s vertices. Answering a question of Burr and Erdős from 1983, and improving on recent results of Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov, and of the current authors, we show that r(K_s,Q_n) = (s-1) (2^n - 1) + 1 for every s \in \N and every sufficiently large n \in \N.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $c$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $r^c$ rank-$a$ sets, or $\mathcal{M}$ contains the GF$(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$ and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $cq^r$ rank-$a$ sets. In the latter case, this determines the maximum density of matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ up to a constant factor.
Polynomial Gap Extensions of the Erdős-Pósa Theorem

Given a graph $H$, we denote by ${\cal M}(H)$ all graphs that can be contracted to $H$. The following extension of the Erdős-Pósa Theorem holds: for every $h$-vertex planar graph $H$, there exists a function $f_{H}$ such that every graph $G$, either contains $k$ disjoint copies of graphs in ${\cal M}(H)$, or contains a set of $f_{H}(k)$ vertices meeting every subgraph of $G$ that belongs in ${\cal M}(H)$. In this paper we prove that this is the case for every graph $H$ of pathwidth at most 2 and, in particular, that $f_{H}(k) = 2^{O(h^2)}\cdot k^{2}\cdot \log k$. As a main ingredient of the proof of our result, we show that for every graph $H$ on $h$ vertices and pathwidth at most 2, either $G$ contains $k$ disjoint copies of $H$ as a minor or the treewidth of $G$ is upper-bounded by $2^{O(h^2)}\cdot k^{2}\cdot \log k$. We finally prove that the exponential dependence on $h$ in these bounds can be avoided if $H=K_{2,r}$. In particular, we show that $f_{K_{2,r}}=O(r^2\cdot k^2)$
Low Polynomial Exclusion of Planar Graph Patterns

The celebrated grid exclusion theorem states that for every $h$-vertex planar graph $H$, there is a constant $c_{h}$ such that if a graph $G$ does not contain $H$ as a minor then $G$ has treewidth at most $c_{h}$. We are looking for patterns of $H$ where this bound can become a low degree polynomial. We provide such bounds for the following parameterized graphs: the wheel ($c_{h}=O(h)$), the double wheel ($c_{h}=O(h^2\cdot \log^{2} h)$), any graph of pathwidth at most 2 ($c_{h}=O(h^{2})$), and the yurt graph ($c_{h}=O(h^{4})$).

A closed word (a.k.a. periodic-like word or complete first return) is a word whose longest border does not have internal occurrences, or, equivalently, whose longest repeated prefix is not right special. We investigate the structure of closed factors of words. We show that a word of length $n$ contains at least $n+1$ distinct closed factors, and characterize those words having exactly $n+1$ closed factors. Furthermore, we show that a word of length $n$ can contain $Θ(n^{2})$ many distinct closed factors.
Around the Petty theorem on equilateral sets

The main goal of this paper is to provide an alternative proof of the following theorem of Petty: in the normed space of dimension at least three, every 3-element equilateral set can be extended to a 4-element equilateral set. Our approach is based on the result of Kramer and Németh about inscribing a simplex into a convex body. To prove the theorem of Petty, we shall also establish that for every 3 points in the normed plane, forming an equilateral set of the common distance $p$, there exists a fourth point, which is equidistant to the given points with the distance not larger than $p$. We will also improve the example given by Petty and obtain the existence of a smooth and strictly convex norm in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which contain a maximal 4-element equilateral set. This shows that the theorem of Petty cannot be generalized to higher dimensions, even for smooth and strictly convex norms.
A note on order-type homogeneous point sets

Let OT_d(n) be the smallest integer N such that every N-element point sequence in R^d in general position contains an order-type homogeneous subset of size n, where a set is order-type homogeneous if all (d+1)-tuples from this set have the same orientation. It is known that a point sequence in R^d that is order-type homogeneous forms the vertex set of a convex polytope that is combinatorially equivalent to a cyclic polytope in R^d. Two famous theorems of Erdos and Szekeres from 1935 imply that OT_1(n) = Theta(n^2) and OT_2(n) = 2^(Theta(n)). For d \geq 3, we give new bounds for OT_d(n). In particular:
1. We show that OT_3(n) = 2^(2^(Theta(n))), answering a question of Eliáš and Matoušek.
2. For d \geq 4, we show that OT_d(n) is bounded above by an exponential tower of height d with O(n) in the topmost exponent.

We study the continuous-time quantum walks on graphs in the adjacency algebra of the $n$-cube and its related distance regular graphs.
For $k\geq 2$, we find graphs in the adjacency algebra of $(2^{k+2}-8)$-cube that admit instantaneous uniform mixing at time $π/2^k$ and graphs that have perfect state transfer at time $π/2^k$.
We characterize the folded $n$-cubes, the halved $n$-cubes and the folded halved $n$-cubes whose adjacency algebra contains a complex Hadamard matrix. We obtain the same conditions for the characterization of these graphs admitting instantaneous uniform mixing.
