On the number of biased graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A biased graph is a graph $G$, together with a distinguished subset $\mathcal{B}$ of its cycles so that no Theta-subgraph of $G$ contains precisely two cycles in $\mathcal{B}$. A large number of biased graphs can be constructed by choosing $G$ to be a complete graph, and $\mathcal{B}$ to be an arbitrary subset of its Hamilton cycles. We show that, on the logarithmic scale, the total number of simple biased graphs on $n$ vertices does not asymptotically exceed the number that can be constructed in this elementary way.

Two Disjoint 5-Holes in Point Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a set of points $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$, a subset $X \subseteq S$ with $|X|=k$ is called $k$-gon if all points of $X$ lie on the boundary of the convex hull of $X$, and $k$-hole if, in addition, no point of $S \setminus X$ lies in the convex hull of $X$. We use computer assistance to show that every set of 17 points in general position admits two disjoint 5-holes, that is, holes with disjoint respective convex hulls. This answers a question of Hosono and Urabe (2001). We also provide new bounds for three and more pairwise disjoint holes. In a recent article, Hosono and Urabe (2018) present new results on interior-disjoint holes -- a variant, which also has been investigated in the last two decades. Using our program, we show that every set of 15 points contains two interior-disjoint 5-holes. Moreover, our program can be used to verify that every set of 17 points contains a 6-gon within significantly smaller computation time than the original program by Szekeres and Peters (2006). Another independent verification of this result was done by Marić (2019).

On compactifications and product-free sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset of a group is said to be product-free if it does not contain three elements satisfying the equation $xy=z$. We give a negative answer to a question of Babai and Sós on the existence of large product-free sets by model theoretic means. This question was originally answered by Gowers. Furthermore, we give a natural and sufficient model theoretic condition for a group to have a large product-free subset, as well as a model theoretic account of a result of Nikolov and Pyber on triple products.

A degree sequence Komlós theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
An important result of Komlós [Tiling Turán theorems, Combinatorica, 2000] yields the asymptotically exact minimum degree threshold that ensures a graph $G$ contains an $H$-tiling covering an $x$th proportion of the vertices of $G$ (for any fixed $x \in (0,1)$ and graph $H$). We give a degree sequence strengthening of this result which allows for a large proportion of the vertices in the host graph $G$ to have degree substantially smaller than that required by Komlós' theorem. We also demonstrate that for certain graphs $H$, the degree sequence condition is essentially best possible in more than one sense.

The bandwidth theorem for locally dense graphs
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 8 (2020) e42 • View Publication • BIB
The Bandwidth theorem of Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz gives a condition on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ that ensures $G$ contains every $r$-chromatic graph $H$ on $n$ vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth $o(n)$, thereby proving a conjecture of Bollobás and Komlós. In this paper we prove a version of the Bandwidth theorem for locally dense graphs. Indeed, we prove that every locally dense $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G) > (1/2+o(1))n$ contains as a subgraph any given (spanning) $H$ with bounded maximum degree and sublinear bandwidth.

Note on the zero-free region of the hard-core model
In this paper we prove a new zero-free region for the partition function of the hard-core model, that is, the independence polynomials of graphs with largest degree $Δ$. This new domain contains the half disk $$D=\left\{ λ\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ \mathrm{Re}(λ)\geq 0, |λ|\leq \frac{7}{8}\tan \left( \fracπ{2(Δ-1)}\right)\right\}.$$

Connected greedy coloring $H$-free graphs
A connected ordering $(v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n)$ of $V(G)$ is an ordering of the vertices such that $v_i$ has at least one neighbour in $\{v_1, \ldots, v_{i - 1}\}$ for every $i \in \{2, \ldots, n\}$. A connected greedy coloring (CGC for short) is a coloring obtained by applying the greedy algorithm to a connected ordering. This has been first introduced in 1989 by Hertz and de Werra, but still very little is known about this problem. An interesting aspect is that, contrary to the traditional greedy coloring, it is not always true that a graph has a connected ordering that produces an optimal coloring; this motivates the definition of the connected chromatic number of $G$, which is the smallest value $χ_c(G)$ such that there exists a CGC of $G$ with $χ_c(G)$ colors. An even more interesting fact is that $χ_c(G) \le χ(G)+1$ for every graph $G$ (Benevides et. al. 2014). In this paper, in the light of the dichotomy for the coloring problem restricted to $H$-free graphs given by Král et.al. in 2001, we are interested in investigating the problems of, given an $H$-free graph $G$: (1). deciding whether $χ_c(G)=χ(G)$; and (2). given also a positive integer $k$, deciding whether $χ_c(G)\le k$. We have proved that Problem (2) has the same dichotomy as the coloring problem (i.e., it is polynomial when $H$ is an induced subgraph of $P_4$ or of $P_3+K_1$, and it is NP-complete otherwise). As for Problem (1), we have proved that $χ_c(G) = χ(G)$ always hold when $G$ is an induced subgraph of $P_5$ or of $P_4+K_1$, and that it is NP-hard to decide whether $χ_c(G)=χ(G)$ when $H$ is not a linear forest or contains an induced $P_9$. We mention that some of the results actually involve fixed $k$ and fixed $χ(G)$.

Tree decompositions of graphs without large bipartite holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A recent result of Condon, Kim, Kühn and Osthus implies that for any $r\geq (\frac{1}{2}+o(1))n$, an $n$-vertex almost $r$-regular graph $G$ has an approximate decomposition into any collections of $n$-vertex bounded degree trees. In this paper, we prove that a similar result holds for an almost $αn$-regular graph $G$ with any $α>0$ and a collection of bounded degree trees on at most $(1-o(1))n$ vertices if $G$ does not contain large bipartite holes. This result is sharp in the sense that it is necessary to exclude large bipartite holes and we cannot hope for an approximate decomposition into $n$-vertex trees. Moreover, this implies that for any $α>0$ and an $n$-vertex almost $αn$-regular graph $G$, with high probability, the randomly perturbed graph $G\cup \mathbf{G}(n,O(\frac{1}{n}))$ has an approximate decomposition into all collections of bounded degree trees of size at most $(1-o(1))n$ simultaneously. This is the first result considering an approximate decomposition problem in the context of Ramsey-Turán theory and the randomly perturbed graph model.

Enumerative Results on the Schröder Pattern Poset
Published in In: Dennunzio A., Formenti E., Manzoni L., Porreca A. (eds) Cellular Automata and Discrete Complex Systems. AUTOMATA 2017. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 10248. Springer, Cham • View Publication • BIB
The set of Schröder words (Schröder language) is endowed with a natural partial order, which can be conveniently described by interpreting Schröder words as lattice paths. The resulting poset is called the Schröder pattern poset. We find closed formulas for the number of Schröder words covering/covered by a given Schröder word in terms of classical parameters of the associated Schröder path. We also enumerate several classes of Schröder avoiding words (with respect to the length), i.e. sets of Schröder words which do not contain a given Schröder word.

Metric dimension and pattern avoidance in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove a number of results about pattern avoidance in graphs with bounded metric dimension or edge metric dimension. We show that the maximum possible number of edges in a graph of diameter $D$ and edge metric dimension $k$ is at most $(\lfloor \frac{2D}{3}\rfloor +1)^{k}+k \sum_{i = 1}^{\lceil \frac{D}{3}\rceil } (2i)^{k-1}$, sharpening the bound of $\binom{k}{2}+k D^{k-1}+D^{k}$ from Zubrilina (2018). We also show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains the complete graph $K_{n}$ as a subgraph is $n = 2^{k}$. We prove that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ as a subgraph is $2^{Θ(k)}$. Furthermore, we show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of edge metric dimension $\leq k$ contains $K_{1,n}$ as a subgraph is $n = 2^{k}$. We also show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains $K_{1,n}$ as a subgraph is $3^{k}-O(k)$. In addition, we prove that the $d$-dimensional grids $\prod_{i = 1}^{d} P_{r_{i}}$ have edge metric dimension at most $d$. This generalizes two results of Kelenc et al. (2016), that non-path grids have edge metric dimension $2$ and that $d$-dimensional hypercubes have edge metric dimension at most $d$. We also provide a characterization of $n$-vertex graphs with edge metric dimension $n-2$, answering a question of Zubrilina. As a result of this characterization, we prove that any connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ such that $edim(G) = n-2$ has diameter at most $5$. More generally, we prove that any connected $n$-vertex graph with edge metric dimension $n-k$ has diameter at most $3k-1$.

A characterization and an application of weight-regular partitions of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A natural generalization of a regular (or equitable) partition of a graph, which makes sense also for non-regular graphs, is the so-called weight-regular partition, which gives to each vertex $u\in V$ a weight that equals the corresponding entry $ν_u$ of the Perron eigenvector $\mathbfν$. This paper contains three main results related to weight-regular partitions of a graph. The first is a characterization of weight-regular partitions in terms of double stochastic matrices. Inspired by a characterization of regular graphs by Hoffman, we also provide a new characterization of weight-regularity by using a Hoffman-like polynomial. As a corollary, we obtain Hoffman's result for regular graphs. In addition, we show an application of weight-regular partitions to study graphs that attain equality in the classical Hoffman's lower bound for the chromatic number of a graph, and we show that weight-regularity provides a condition under which Hoffman's bound can be improved.

$(k,λ)$-Anti-Powers and Other Patterns in Words
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 25:4 (2018) #P4.41 • View Publication • BIB
Given a word, we are interested in the structure of its contiguous subwords split into $k$ blocks of equal length, especially in the homogeneous and anti-homogeneous cases. We introduce the notion of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns, words of the form $w = w_1\cdots w_k$ where, when $\{w_1,\dots,w_k\}$ is partitioned via equality, there are $μ_s$ sets of size $s$ for each $s \in \{1,\dots,k\}$. This is a generalization of the well-studied $k$-powers and the $k$-anti-powers recently introduced by Fici, Restivo, Silva, and Zamboni, as well as a refinement of the $(k,λ)$-anti-powers introduced by Defant. We generalize the anti-Ramsey-type results of Fici et al. to $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns and improve their bounds on $N_α(k,k)$, the minimum length such that every word of length $N_α(k,k)$ on an alphabet of size $α$ contains a $k$-power or $k$-anti-power. We also generalize their results on infinite words avoiding $k$-anti-powers to the case of $(k,λ)$-anti-powers. We provide a few results on the relation between $α$ and $N_α(k,k)$ and find the expected number of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns in a word of length $n$.

On graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Distance ideals generalize the Smith normal form of the distance matrix of a graph. The family of graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals contains the family of graphs whose distance matrix has at most 2 invariant factors equal to 1. Here we give an infinite family of forbidden induced subgraphs for the graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals. These are also related with other well known graph classes.

On ideals generated by fold products of linear forms
Let $\mathbb K$ be a field of characteristic 0. Given $n$ linear forms in $R=\mathbb K[x_1,\ldots,x_k]$, with no two proportional, in one of our main results we show that the ideal $I\subset R$ generated by all $(n-2)$-fold products of these linear forms has linear graded free resolution. This result helps determining a complete set of generators of the symmetric ideal of $I$. Via Sylvester forms we can analyze from a different perspective the generators of the presentation ideal of the Orlik-Terao algebra of the second order; this is the algebra generated by the reciprocals of the products of any two (distinct) of the linear forms considered. We also show that when $k=2$, and when the collection of $n$ linear forms may contain proportional linear forms, for any $1\leq a\leq n$, the ideal generated by $a$-fold products of these linear forms has linear graded free resolution.

On the modular Erdős-Burgess constant
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer. For any integer $a$, we say that $a$ is idempotent modulo $n$ if $a^2\equiv a\pmod n$. The $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any $\ell$ integers contain one or more integers whose product is idempotent modulo $n$. We gave a sharp lower bound of the $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant, in particular, we determined the $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant in the case when $n$ is a prime power or a product of pairwise distinct primes.

When Do Gomory-Hu Subtrees Exist?
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gomory-Hu (GH) Trees are a classical sparsification technique for graph connectivity. It is one of the fundamental models in combinatorial optimization which also continually finds new applications, most recently in social network analysis. For any edge-capacitated undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ and any subset of {\em terminals} $Z \subseteq V$, a Gomory-Hu Tree is an edge-capacitated tree $T=(Z,E(T))$ such that for every $u,v \in Z$, the value of the minimum capacity $uv$ cut in $G$ is the same as in $T$. Moreover, the minimum cuts in $T$ directly identify (in a certain way) those in $G$. It is well-known that we may not always find a GH tree which is a subgraph of $G$. For instance, every GH tree for the vertices of $K_{3,3}$ is a $5$-star. We characterize those graph and terminal pairs $(G,Z)$ which always admit such a tree. We show that these are the graphs which have no \emph{terminal-$K_{2,3}$ minor}. That is, no $K_{2,3}$ minor whose vertices correspond to terminals in $Z$. We also show that the family of pairs $(G,Z)$ which forbid such $K_{2,3}$ "$Z$-minors" arises, roughly speaking, from so-called Okamura-Seymour instances. More precisely, they are subgraphs of {\em $Z$-webs}. A $Z$-web is built from planar graphs with one outside face which contains all the terminals and each inner face is a triangle which may contain an arbitrary graph. This characterization yields an additional consequence for multiflow problems. Fix a graph $G$ and a subset $Z \subseteq V(G)$ of terminals. Call $(G,Z)$ {\em cut-sufficient} if the cut condition is sufficient to characterize the existence of a multiflow for any demands between vertices in $Z$, and any edge capacities on $G$. Then $(G,Z)$ is cut-sufficient if and only if it is terminal-$K_{2,3}$ free.
Birkhoff-von Neumann Graphs that are PM-compact
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-studied geometric object in combinatorial optimization is the perfect matching polytope of a graph $G$. In any investigation concerning the perfect matching polytope, one may assume that $G$ is matching covered --- that is, it is a connected graph (of order at least two) and each edge lies in some perfect matching. A graph $G$ is Birkhoff-von Neumann (BvN) if its perfect matching polytope is characterized solely by non-negativity and degree constraints. A result of Balas (1981) implies that $G$ is BvN if and only if $G$ does not contain a pair of vertex-disjoint odd cycles $(C_1,C_2)$ such that $G-V(C_1)-V(C_2)$ has a perfect matching. It follows immediately that the corresponding decision problem is in co-NP. However, it is not known to be in NP. The problem is in P if the input graph is planar --- due to a result of Carvalho, Lucchesi and Murty (2004). These authors, along with Kothari (2018), have shown that this problem is equivalent to the seemingly unrelated problem of deciding whether a given graph is $\overline{C_6}$-free. The combinatorial diameter of a polytope is the diameter of its $1$-skeleton graph. A graph $G$ is PM-compact (PMc) if the combinatorial diameter of its perfect matching polytope equals one. A result of Chvátal (1975) implies that $G$ is PMc if and only if $G$ does not contain a pair of vertex-disjoint even cycles $(C_1,C_2)$ such that $G-V(C_1)-V(C_2)$ has a perfect matching. Once again the corresponding decision problem is in co-NP, but it is not known to be in NP. The problem is in P if the input graph is bipartite or is near-bipartite --- due to a result of Wang, Lin, Carvalho, Lucchesi, Sanjith and Little (2013). In this paper, we consider the "intersection" of the aforementioned problems. We give a complete characterization of matching covered graphs that are BvN as well as PMc. (Thus the corresponding decision problem is in P.)

On the almost-principal minors of a symmetric matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
The almost-principal rank characteristic sequence (apr-sequence) of an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix is introduced, which is defined to be the string $a_1 a_2 \cdots a_{n-1}$, where $a_k$ is either $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$, according as all, some but not all, or none of its almost-principal minors of order $k$ are nonzero. In contrast to the other principal rank characteristic sequences in the literature, the apr-sequence of a matrix does not depend on principal minors. The almost-principal rank of a symmetric matrix $B$, denoted by ${\rm aprank}(B)$, is defined as the size of a largest nonsingular almost-principal submatrix of $B$. A complete characterization of the sequences not containing an $\tt A$ that can be realized as the apr-sequence of a symmetric matrix over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is provided. A necessary condition for a sequence to be the apr-sequence of a symmetric matrix over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is presented. It is shown that if $B \in \mathbb{F}^{n\times n}$ is symmetric and non-diagonal, then ${\rm rank}(B)-1 \leq {\rm aprank}(B) \leq {\rm rank}(B)$, with both bounds being sharp. Moreover, it is shown that if $B$ is symmetric, non-diagonal and singular, and does not contain a zero row, then ${\rm rank}(B) = {\rm aprank}(B)$.
Spectral characterizations of anti-regular graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Vol. 557, pp. 84-104, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We study the eigenvalues of the unique connected anti-regular graph $A_n$. Using Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, we obtain a trigonometric equation whose roots are the eigenvalues and perform elementary analysis to obtain an almost complete characterization of the eigenvalues. In particular, we show that the interval $Ω=[\tfrac{-1-\sqrt{2}}{2}, \tfrac{-1+\sqrt{2}}{2}]$ contains only the trivial eigenvalues $λ= -1$ or $λ=0$, and any closed interval strictly larger than $Ω$ will contain eigenvalues of $A_n$ for all $n$ sufficiently large. We also obtain bounds for the maximum and minimum eigenvalues, and for all other eigenvalues we obtain interval bounds that improve as $n$ increases. Moreover, our approach reveals a more complete picture of the bipartite character of the eigenvalues of $A_n$, namely, as $n$ increases the eigenvalues are (approximately) symmetric about the number $-\tfrac{1}{2}$. We also obtain an asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues as $n\rightarrow\infty$. Finally, the relationship between the eigenvalues of $A_n$ and the eigenvalues of a general threshold graph is discussed.
Vertex Turán problems for the oriented hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this short note we consider the oriented vertex Turán problem in the hypercube: for a fixed oriented graph $\overrightarrow{F}$, determine the maximum size $ex_v(\overrightarrow{F}, \overrightarrow{Q_n})$ of a subset $U$ of the vertices of the oriented hypercube $\overrightarrow{Q_n}$ such that the induced subgraph $\overrightarrow{Q_n}[U]$ does not contain any copy of $\overrightarrow{F}$. We obtain the exact value of $ex_v(\overrightarrow{P_k}, \overrightarrow{Q_n})$ for the directed path $\overrightarrow{P_k}$, the exact value of $ex_v(\overrightarrow{V_2}, \overrightarrow{Q_n})$ for the directed cherry $\overrightarrow{V_2}$ and the asymptotic value of $ex_v(\overrightarrow{T}, \overrightarrow{Q_n})$ for any directed tree $\overrightarrow{T}$.
