Stability for Intersecting Families of Perfect Matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ is $intersecting$ if any two of its members have an edge in common. It is known that if $\mathcal{F}$ is family of intersecting perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$, then $|\mathcal{F}| \leq (2n-3)!!$ and if equality holds, then $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ where $ \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ is the family of all perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ that contain some fixed edge $ij$. In this note, we show that the extremal families are stable, namely, that for any $ε\in (0,1/\sqrt{e})$ and $n > n(ε)$, any intersecting family of perfect matchings of size greater than $(1 - 1/\sqrt{e} + ε)(2n-3)!!$ is contained in $\mathcal{F}_{ij}$ for some edge $ij$. The proof uses the Gelfand pair $(S_{2n},S_2 \wr S_n)$ along with an isoperimetric method of Ellis.
The existence of square non-integer Heffter arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Heffter array $H(n;k)$ is an $n\times n$ matrix such that each row and column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Heffter arrays are useful for embedding the graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface. An integer Heffter array is one in which each row and column sum is $0$. Necessary and sufficient conditions (on $n$ and $k$) for the existence of an integer Heffter array $H(n;k)$ were verified by Archdeacon, Dinitz, Donovan and Yazıcı\ (2015) and Dinitz and Wanless (2017). In this paper we consider square Heffter arrays that are not necessarily integer. We show that such Heffter arrays exist whenever $3\leq k<n$.

Connected $k$-factors in bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k,l$ be two positive integers. An $S_{k,l}$ is a graph obtained from disjoint $K_{1,k}$ and $K_{1,l}$ by adding an edge between the $k$-degree vertex in $K_{1,k}$ and the $l$-degree vertex in $K_{1,l}$. An {\em $S_{k,l}$-free} graph is a graph containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to $S_{k,l}$. In this note, we show that, for any positive integers $k,l$ with $2\leqslant k\leqslant l$, there exists a constant $c=c(k,l)$ such that every connected balanced $S_{k,l}$-free bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $c$ contains a connected $k$-factor.

New lower bounds on the size of (n,r)-arcs in PG(2,q)
Published • View Publication • BIB
An (n,r)-arc in PG(2,q) is a set of n points such that each line contains at most r of the selected points. It is well-known that (n,r)-arcs in PG(2,q) correspond to projective linear codes. Let m_r(2,q) denote the maximal number n of points for which an (n,r)-arc in PG(2,q) exists. In this paper we obtain improved lower bounds on m_r(2,q) by explicitly constructing (n,r)-arcs. Some of the constructed (n,r)-arcs correspond to linear codes meeting the Griesmer bound. All results are obtained by integer linear programming.

Strong Subgraph Connectivity of Digraphs: A Survey
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this survey we overview known results on the strong subgraph $k$-connectivity and strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity of digraphs. After an introductory section, the paper is divided into four sections: basic results, algorithms and complexity, sharp bounds for strong subgraph $k$-(arc-)connectivity, minimally strong subgraph $(k, \ell)$-(arc-) connected digraphs. This survey contains several conjectures and open problems for further study.

Codegree threshold for tiling $k$-graphs with two edges sharing exactly $\ell$ vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given integer $k$ and a $k$-graph $F$, let $t_{k-1}(n,F)$ be the minimum integer $t$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with codegree at least $t$ contains an $F$-factor. For integers $k\geq3$ and $0\leq\ell\leq k-1$, let $\mathcal{Y}_{k,\ell}$ be a $k$-graph with two edges that shares exactly $\ell$ vertices. Han and Zhao (JCTA, 2015) asked the following question: For all $k\ge 3$, $0\le \ell\le k-1$ and sufficiently large $n$ divisible by $2k-\ell$, determine the exact value of $t_{k-1}(n,\mathcal{Y}_{k,\ell})$. In this paper, we show that $t_{k-1}(n,\mathcal{Y}_{k,\ell})=\frac{n}{2k-\ell}$ for $k\geq3$ and $1\leq\ell\leq k-2$, combining with two previously known results of Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi {(JCTA, 2009)} and Gao, Han and Zhao (arXiv, 2016), the question of Han and Zhao is solved completely.
Bipartite induced density in triangle-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d$ contains a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree at least $d^2/(2n)$. This is sharp up to a logarithmic factor in $n$. Relatedly, we show that the fractional chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most the minimum of $n/d$ and $(2+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. This is sharp up to constant factors. Similarly, we show that the list chromatic number of any such triangle-free graph is at most $O(\min\{\sqrt{n},(n\log n)/d\})$ as $n\to\infty$. Relatedly, we also make two conjectures. First, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has fractional chromatic number at most $(\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{n/\log n}$ as $n\to\infty$. Second, any triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has list chromatic number at most $O(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ as $n\to\infty$.

The bipartite $K_{2,2}$-free process and bipartite Ramsey number $b(2, t)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The bipartite Ramsey number $b(s,t)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every blue-red edge coloring of $K_{n,n}$ contains either a blue $K_{s,s}$ or a red $K_{t,t}$. In the bipartite $K_{2,2}$-free process, we begin with an empty graph on vertex set $X\cup Y$, $|X|=|Y|=n$. At each step, a random edge from $X\times Y$ is added under the restriction that no $K_{2,2}$ is formed. This step is repeated until no more edges can be added. In this note, we analyze this process and show that the resulting graph witnesses that $b(2,t) =Ω\left(t^{3/2}/\log t \right)$, thereby improving the best known lower bound.

Triangle-free subgraphs with large fractional chromatic number
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 31 (2022) 136-143 • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that for any integers $k$ and $g$, there is a graph with chromatic number at least $k$ and girth at least $g$. In 1960's, Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that for any $k$ and $g$, there exists a number $h(k,g)$, such that every graph with chromatic number at least $h(k,g)$ contains a subgraph with chromatic number at least $k$ and girth at least $g$. In 1977, Rödl proved the case for $g=4$ and arbitrary $k$. We prove the fractional chromatic number version of Rödl's result.

Extremal $H$-free planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $H$, a graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. We continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs, that is, how many edges can an $H$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices have? We define $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free planar graph on $n $ vertices. We first obtain several sufficient conditions on $H$ which yield $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)=3n-6$ for all $n\ge |V(H)|$. We discover that the chromatic number of $H$ does not play a role, as in the celebrated Erdős-Stone Theorem. We then completely determine $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a wheel or a star. Finally, we examine the case when $H$ is a $(t, r)$-fan, that is, $H$ is isomorphic to $K_1+tK_{r-1}$, where $t\ge2$ and $r\ge 3$ are integers. However, determining $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, when $H$ is a planar subcubic graph, remains wide open.

Large girth approximate Steiner triple systems
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society, 100 (2019), 895-913 • View Publication • BIB
In 1973 Erdos asked whether there are n-vertex partial Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth and quadratically many triples. (Here girth is defined as the smallest integer g \ge 4 for which some g-element vertex-set contains at least g-2 triples.) We answer this question, by showing existence of approximate Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth. More concretely, for any fixed \ell \ge 4 we show that a natural constrained random process typically produces a partial Steiner triple system with (1/6-o(1))n^2 triples and girth larger than \ell. The process iteratively adds random triples subject to the constraint that the girth remains larger than \ell. Our result is best possible up to the o(1)-term, which is a negative power of n.

On the sizes of vertex-$k$-maximal $r$-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph, where $V$ is a set of vertices and $E$ is a set of non-empty subsets of $V$ called edges. If all edges of $H$ have the same cardinality $r$, then $H$ is a $r$-uniform hypergraph; if $E$ consists of all $r$-subsets of $V$, then $H$ is a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph, denoted by $K_n^r$, where $n=|V|$. A hypergraph $H'=(V',E')$ is called a subhypergraph of $H=(V,E)$ if $V'\subseteq V$ and $E'\subseteq E$. A $r$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ is vertex-$k$-maximal if every subhypergraph of $H$ has vertex-connectivity at most $k$, but for any edge $e\in E(K_n^r)\setminus E(H)$, $H+e$ contains at least one subhypergraph with vertex-connectivity at least $k+1$. In this paper, we first prove that for given integers $n,k,r$ with $k,r\geq2$ and $n\geq k+1$, every vertex-$k$-maximal $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ of order $n$ satisfies $|E(H)|\geq (^n_r)-(^{n-k}_r)$, and this lower bound is best possible. Next, we conjecture that for sufficiently large $n$, every vertex-$k$-maximal $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $|E(H)|\leq(^n_r)-(^{n-k}_r)+(\frac{n}{k}-2)(^k_r)$, where $k,r\geq2$ are integers. And the conjecture is verified for the case $r>k$.

On graphs whose flow polynomials have real roots only
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a bridgeless graph. In 2011 Kung and Royle showed that all roots of the flow polynomial $F(G,λ)$ of $G$ are integers if and only if $G$ is the dual of a chordal and plane graph. In this article, we study whether a bridgeless graph $G$ for which $F(G,λ)$ has real roots only must be the dual of some chordal and plane graph. We conclude that the answer of this problem for $G$ is positive if and only if $F(G,λ)$ does not have any real root in the interval $(1,2)$. We also prove that for any non-separable and $3$-edge connected $G$, if $G-e$ is also non-separable for each edge $e$ in $G$ and every $3$-edge-cut of $G$ consists of edges incident with some vertex of $G$, then all roots of $P(G,λ)$ are real if and only if either $G\in \{L,Z_3,K_4\}$ or $F(G,λ)$ contains at least $9$ real roots in the interval $(1,2)$, where $L$ is the graph with one vertex and one loop and $Z_3$ is the graph with two vertices and three parallel edges joining these two vertices.
A Note on the Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number of Spiders
The maximum rectilinear crossing number of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of crossings in a good straight-line drawing of $G$ in the plane. In a good drawing any two edges intersect in at most one point (counting endpoints), no three edges have an interior point in common, and edges do not contain vertices in their interior. A spider is a subdivision of $K_{1,k}$. We provide both upper and lower bounds for the maximum rectilinear crossing number of spiders. While there are not many results on the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers of infinite families of graphs, our methods can be used to find the exact maximum rectilinear crossing number of $K_{1,k}$ where each edge is subdivided exactly once. This is a first step towards calculating the maximum rectilinear crossing number of arbitrary trees.
Density of monochromatic infinite paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any subset $A \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, we define its upper density to be $\limsup_{ n \rightarrow \infty } |A \cap \{ 1, \dotsc, n \}| / n$. We prove that every $2$-edge-colouring of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ contains a monochromatic infinite path, whose vertex set has upper density at least $(9 + \sqrt{17})/16 \approx 0.82019$. This improves on results of Erdős and Galvin, and of DeBiasio and McKenney.
Tight Upper Bounds on the Crossing Number in a Minor-Closed Class
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. Our main result is that every graph $G$ that does not contain a fixed graph as a minor has crossing number $O(Δn)$, where $G$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$. This dependence on $n$ and $Δ$ is best possible. This result answers an open question of Wood and Telle [New York J. Mathematics, 2007], who proved the best previous bound of $O(Δ^2 n)$. We also study the convex and rectilinear crossing numbers, and prove an $O(Δn)$ bound for the convex crossing number of bounded pathwidth graphs, and a $\sum_v°(v)^2$ bound for the rectilinear crossing number of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs.

Minimal Ramsey graphs for cyclicity
We study graphs with the property that every edge-colouring admits a monochromatic cycle (the length of which may depend freely on the colouring) and describe those graphs that are minimal with this property. We show that every member in this class reduces recursively to one of the base graphs $K_5-e$ or $K_4\vee K_4$ (two copies of $K_4$ identified at an edge), which implies that an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph with $e(G)\geq 2n-1$ must contain one of those as a minor. We also describe three explicit constructions governing the reverse process. As an application we are able to establish Ramsey infiniteness for each of the three possible chromatic subclasses $χ=2, 3, 4$, the unboundedness of maximum degree within the class as well as Ramsey separability of the family of cycles of length $\leq l$ from any of its proper subfamilies.

The Erdos-Szekeres problem and an induced Ramsey question
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the Erdos-Szekeres convex polytope conjecture in $R^d$, we initiate the study of the following induced Ramsey problem for hypergraphs. Given integers $ n > k \geq 5$, what is the minimum integer $g_k(n)$ such that any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $g_k(n)$ vertices with the property that any set of $k + 1$ vertices induces 0, 2, or 4 edges, contains an independent set of size $n$. Our main result shows that $g_k(n) > 2^{cn^{k-4}}$, where $c = c(k)$.

Binding Number, Toughness and General Matching Extendability in Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Graph Theory (January 17, 2019) dmtcs:4723 • View Publication • BIB
A connected graph $G$ with at least $2m + 2n + 2$ vertices which contains a perfect matching is $E(m, n)$-{\it extendable}, if for any two sets of disjoint independent edges $M$ and $N$ with $|M| = m$ and $|N|= n$, there is a perfect matching $F$ in $G$ such that $M\subseteq F$ and $N\cap F=\emptyset$. Similarly, a connected graph with at least $n+2k+2$ vertices is called $(n,k)$-{\it extendable} if for any vertex set $S$ of size $n$ and any matching $M$ of size $k$ of $G-S$, $G-S-V(M)$ contains a perfect matching. Let $\varepsilon$ be a small positive constant, $b(G)$ and $t(G)$ be the binding number and toughness of a graph $G$. The two main theorems of this paper are: for every graph $G$ with sufficiently large order, 1) if $b(G)\geq 4/3+\varepsilon$, then $G$ is $E(m,n)$-extendable and also $(n,k)$-extendable; 2) if $t(G)\geq 1+\varepsilon$ and $G$ has a high connectivity, then $G$ is $E(m,n)$-extendable and also $(n,k)$-extendable. It is worth to point out that the binding number and toughness conditions for the existence of the general matching extension properties are almost same as that for the existence of perfect matchings.

The Turán number of Berge-K_4 in triple systems
A Berge-$K_4$ in a triple system is a configuration with four vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and six distinct triples $\{e_{ij}: 1\le i< j \le 4\}$ such that $\{v_i,v_j\}\subset e_{ij}$ for every $1\le i<j\le 4$. We denote by $\cal{B}$ the set of Berge-$K_4$ configurations. A triple system is $\cal{B}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\cal{B}$. We prove that the maximum number of triples in a $\cal{B}$-free triple system on $n\ge 6$ points is obtained by the balanced complete $3$-partite triple system: all triples $\{abc: a\in A, b\in B, c\in C\}$ where $A,B,C$ is a partition of $n$ points with $$\left\lfloor{n\over 3}\right\rfloor=|A|\le |B|\le |C|=\left\lceil{n\over 3}\right\rceil.$$
