A short derivation of the structure theorem for graphs with excluded topological minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a major step in their proof of Wagner's conjecture, Robertson and Seymour showed that every graph not containing a fixed graph $H$ as a minor has a tree-decomposition in which each torso is almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus. Recently, Grohe and Marx proved a similar result for graphs not containing $H$ as a topological minor. They showed that every graph which does not contain $H$ as a topological minor has a tree-decomposition in which every torso is either almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus, or has a bounded number of vertices of high degree. We give a short proof of the theorem of Grohe and Marx, improving their bounds on a number of the parameters involved.

Realisation of groups as automorphism groups in categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that in various categories, including many consisting of maps or hypermaps, oriented or unoriented, of a given hyperbolic type, every countable group $A$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of uncountably many non-isomorphic objects, infinitely many of them finite if $A$ is finite. In particular, this applies to dessins d'enfants, regarded as finite oriented hypermaps. The proof, involving maximal subgroups of various triangle groups, yields a simple construction of a regular map whose automorphism group contains an isomorphic copy of every finite group.

On line covers of finite projective and polar spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $m$-$cover$ of lines of a finite projective space ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of a finite polar space $\cal P$) is a set of lines $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) such that every point of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) contains $m$ lines of $\cal L$, for some $m$. Embed ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ in ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. Let $\bar{\cal L}$ denote the set of points of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$ lying on the extended lines of $\cal L$. An $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover if there are two possibilities for the number of lines of $\cal L$ contained in an $(r-2)$-space of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$. Basing on this notion, we characterize $m$-covers $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ such that $\bar{\cal L}$ is a two-character set of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. In particular, we show that if $\cal L$ is invariant under a Singer cyclic group of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ then it is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover. Assuming that the lines of $\cal L$ are lines of a symplectic polar space ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of an orthogonal polar space ${\cal Q}(r,q)$ of parabolic type), similarly to the projective case we introduce the notion of an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover of symplectic type (of parabolic type). We prove that an $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of ${\cal Q}(r,q)$) has this dual property if and only if $\bar{\cal L}$ is a tight set of an Hermitian variety ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal W}(r,q^2)$ (of ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal Q}(r,q^2)$). We also provide some interesting examples of $(4n-3)$-dual $m$-covers of symplectic type of ${\cal W}(4n-1,q)$.

Local Properties in Colored Graphs, Distinct Distances, and Difference Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study Extremal Combinatorics problems where local properties are used to derive global properties. That is, we consider a given configuration where every small piece of the configuration satisfies some restriction, and use this local property to derive global properties of the entire configuration. We study one such Ramsey problem of Erdős and Shelah, where the configurations are complete graphs with colored edges and every small induced subgraph contains many distinct colors. Our bounds for this Ramsey problem show that the known probabilistic construction is tight in various cases. We study one Discrete Geometry variant, also by Erdős, where we have a set of points in the plane such that every small subset spans many distinct distances. Finally, we consider an Additive Combinatorics problem, where we are given sets of real numbers such that every small subset has a large difference set. We derive new bounds for all of the above problems. Our proof technique is based on introducing an non-algebraic variant of additive energies. This abstract energy variant is based on edge colors in graphs.

Intervals of permutations and the principal Möbius function
We show that the proportion of permutations of length $n$ with principal Möbius function equal to zero, $Z(n)$, is asymptotically bounded below by 0.3995. If a permutation $π$ contains two intervals of length 2, where one interval is an ascent and the other a descent, then we show that the value of the principal Möbius function $μ[1, π]$ is zero, and we use this result to find the lower bound for $Z(n)$. We also show that if a permutation $φ$ has certain properties, then any permutation $π$ which contains an interval order-isomorphic to $φ$ has $μ[1, π] = 0$.
$2$-Neighbour-Transitive Codes with Small Blocks of Imprimitivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A code $C$ in the Hamming graph $\varGamma=H(m,q)$ is $2\it{\text{-neighbour-transitive}}$ if ${\rm Aut}(C)$ acts transitively on each of $C=C_0$, $C_1$ and $C_2$, the first three parts of the distance partition of $V\varGamma$ with respect to $C$. Previous classifications of families of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes leave only those with an affine action on the alphabet to be investigated. Here, $2$-neighbour-transitive codes with minimum distance at least $5$ and that contain "small" subcodes as blocks of imprimitivity are classified. When considering codes with minimum distance at least $5$, completely transitive codes are a proper subclass of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes. Thus, as a corollary of the main result, completely transitive codes satisfying the above conditions are also classified.

On the maximum number of odd cycles in graphs without smaller odd cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for each odd integer $k \geq 7$, every graph on $n$ vertices without odd cycles of length less than $k$ contains at most $(n/k)^k$ cycles of length $k$. This generalizes the previous results on the maximum number of pentagons in triangle-free graphs, conjectured by Erdős in 1984, and asymptotically determines the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,C_k,C_{k-2})$ for odd $k$. In contrary to the previous results on the pentagon case, our proof is not computer-assisted.

Finding a Maximum-Weight Convex Set in a Chordal Graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a natural combinatorial optimization problem on chordal graphs, the class of graphs with no induced cycle of length four or more. A subset of vertices of a chordal graph is (monophonically) convex if it contains the vertices of all chordless paths between any two vertices of the set. The problem is to find a maximum-weight convex subset of a given vertex-weighted chordal graph. It generalizes previously studied special cases in trees and split graphs. It also happens to be closely related to the closure problem in partially ordered sets and directed graphs. We give the first polynomial-time algorithm for the problem.

The Tutte's condition in terms of graph factors
Let $G$ be a connected general graph of even order, with a function $f\colon V(G)\to\Z^+$. We obtain that $G$ satisfies the Tutte's condition \[ o(G-S)\le \sum_{v\in S}f(v)\qquad\text{for any nonempty set $S\subset V(G)$}, \] with respect to $f$ if and only if $G$ contains an $H$-factor for any function $H\colon V(G)\to 2^\N$ such that $H(v)\in \{J_f(v),\,J_f^+(v)\}$ for each $v\in V(G)$, where the set $J_f(v)$ consists of the integer $f(v)$ and all positive odd integers less than $f(v)$, and the set $J^+_f(v)$ consists of positive odd integers less than or equal to $f(v)+1$. We also obtain a characterization for graphs of odd order satisfying the Tutte's condition with respect to a function.
On the Circumference of Essentially 4-connected Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A planar graph is essentially $4$-connected if it is 3-connected and every of its 3-separators is the neighborhood of a single vertex. Jackson and Wormald proved that every essentially 4-connected planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\frac{2n+4}{5}$, and this result has recently been improved multiple times. In this paper, we prove that every essentially 4-connected planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\frac{5}{8}(n+2)$. This improves the previously best-known lower bound $\frac{3}{5}(n+2)$.

Even cycles in dense graphs
We will show that for $α>0$ there is $n_0$ such that if $G$ is a graph on $n\geq n_0$ vertices such that $αn< δ(G)< (n-1)/2$, then for every $n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_l= δ(G)$, $G$ contains a disjoint union of $C_{2n_1},C_{2n_2}, \dots, C_{2n_l}$ unless $G$ has a very specific structure.

Coloring hypergraphs of low connectivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a hypergraph $G$, let $χ(G), Δ(G),$ and $λ(G)$ denote the chromatic number, the maximum degree, and the maximum local edge connectivity of $G$, respectively. A result of Rhys Price Jones from 1975 says that every connected hypergraph $G$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq Δ(G) + 1$ and equality holds if and only if $G$ is a complete graph, an odd cycle, or $G$ has just one (hyper-)edge. By a result of Bjarne Toft from 1970 it follows that every hypergraph $G$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq λ(G) + 1$. In this paper, we show that a hypergraph $G$ with $λ(G) \geq 3$ satisfies $χ(G) = λ(G) + 1$ if and only if $G$ contains a block which belongs to a family $\mathcal{H}_{λ(G)}$. The class $\mathcal{H}_3$ is the smallest family which contains all odd wheels and is closed under taking Hajós joins. For $k \geq 4$, the family $\mathcal{H}_k$ is the smallest that contains all complete graphs $K_{k+1}$ and is closed under Hajós joins. For the proofs of the above results we use critical hypergraphs. A hypergraph $G$ is called $(k+1)$-critical if $χ(G)=k+1$, but $χ(H)\leq k$ whenever $H$ is a proper subhypergraph of $G$. We give a characterization of $(k+1)$-critical hypergraphs having a separating edge set of size $k$ as well as a a characterization of $(k+1)$-critical hypergraphs having a separating vertex set of size $2$.

On the Twelve-Point Theorem for $\ell$-Reflexive Polygons
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that, adding the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of a reflexive polygon and the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of its polar, always yields 12. Generalising appropriately the notion of reflexivity, one shows that this remains true for "$\ell$-reflexive polygons". In particular, there exist (for this reason) infinitely many (lattice inequivalent) lattice polygons with the same property. The first proof of this fact is due to Kasprzyk and Nill. The present paper contains a second proof (which uses tools only from toric geometry) as well as the description of complementary properties of these polygons and of the invariants of the corresponding toric log del Pezzo surfaces.
Structure and enumeration of K4-minor-free links and link-diagrams
We study the class L of link-types that admit a K4-minor-free diagram, i.e., they can be projected on the plane so that the resulting graph does not contain any subdivision of K4. We prove that L is the closure of a subclass of torus links under the operation of connected sum. Using this structural result, we enumerate L and subclasses of it, with respect to the minimum number of crossings or edges in a projection of L' in L. Further, we obtain counting formulas and asymptotic estimates for the connected K4-minor-free link-diagrams, minimal K4-minor-free link-diagrams, and K4-minor-free diagrams of the unknot.
Relating the cut distance and the weak* topology for graphons
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, series B, Volume 147, 2021, Pages 252-298 • View Publication • BIB
The theory of graphons is ultimately connected with the so-called cut norm. In this paper, we approach the cut norm topology via the weak* topology (when considering a predual of $L^{1}$-functions). We prove that a sequence $W_1,W_2,W_3,\ldots$ of graphons converges in the cut distance if and only if we have equality of the sets of weak* accumulation points and of weak* limit points of all sequences of graphons $W_1',W_2',W_3',\ldots$ that are weakly isomorphic to $W_1,W_2,W_3,\ldots$. We further give a short descriptive set theoretic argument that each sequence of graphons contains a subsequence with the property above. This in particular provides an alternative proof of the theorem of Lovász and Szegedy about compactness of the space of graphons. We connect these results to "multiway cut" characterization of cut distance convergence from [Ann. of Math. (2) 176 (2012), no. 1, 151-219]. These results are more naturally phrased in the Vietoris hyperspace $K$ over graphons with the weak* topology. We show that graphons with the cut distance topology are homeomorphic to a closed subset of $K$, and deduce several consequences of this fact. From these concepts a new order on the space of graphons emerges. This order allows to compare how structured two graphons are. We establish basic properties of this "structurdness order".

Packing spanning rigid subgraphs with restricted degrees
Let $G$ be a graph and let $l$ be an integer-valued function on subsets of $V(G)$. The graph $G$ is said to be $l$-partition-connected, if for every partition $P$ of $V(G)$, $e_G(P)\ge \sum_{A\in P} l(A)-l(V(G))$, where $e_G(P)$ denotes the number of edges of $G$ joining different parts of $P$. We say that $G$ is $l$-rigid, if it contains a spanning $l$-partition-connected subgraph $H$ with $|E(H)|=\sum_{v\in V(H)} l(v)-l(V(H))$. In this paper, we investigate decomposition of graphs into spanning partition-connected and spanning rigid subgraphs. As a consequence, we improve a recent result due to Gu (2017) by proving that every $(4kp-2p+2m)$-connected graph $G$ with $k\ge 2$ has a spanning subgraph $H$ containing a packing of $m$ spanning trees and $p$ spanning $(2k-1)$-edge-connected subgraphs $H_1,\ldots, H_p$ such that for each vertex $v$, every $H_i-v$ remains $(k-1)$-edge-connected and also $d_H(v)\le \lceil \frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rceil +2kp-p+m$. From this result, we refine a result on arc-connected orientations of graphs.

A generalized Turán problem in random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the following generalization of the Turán problem in sparse random graphs. Given graphs $T$ and $H$, let $\mathrm{ex}\big(G(n,p), T, H\big)$ be the random variable that counts the largest number of copies of $T$ in a subgraph of $G(n,p)$ that does not contain $H$. We study the threshold phenomena arising in the evolution of the typical value of this random variable, for every $H$ and an arbitrary $2$-balanced $T$. Our results in the case when $m_2(H) > m_2(T)$ are a natural generalization of the Erdős--Stone theorem for $G(n,p)$, which was proved several years ago by Conlon and Gowers and by Schacht; the case $T = K_m$ has been recently resolved by Alon, Kostochka, and Shikhelman. More interestingly, the case when $m_2(H) \le m_2(T)$ exhibits a more complex and subtle behavior. Namely, the location(s) of the (possibly multiple) threshold(s) are determined by densities of various coverings of $H$ with copies of $T$ and the typical value(s) of $\mathrm{ex}\big(G(n,p), T, H\big)$ are given by solutions to deterministic hypergraph Turán-type problems that we are unable to solve in full generality.

Cyclic triangle factors in regular tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Both Cuckler and Yuster independently conjectured that when $n$ is an odd positive multiple of $3$ every regular tournament on $n$ vertices contains a collection of $n/3$ vertex-disjoint copies of the cyclic triangle. Soon after, Keevash and Sudakov proved that if $G$ is an orientation of a graph on $n$ vertices in which every vertex has both indegree and outdegree at least $(1/2 - o(1))n$, then there exists a collection of vertex-disjoint cyclic triangles that covers all but at most $3$ vertices. In this paper, we resolve the conjecture of Cuckler and Yuster for sufficiently large $n$.
Proportional Choosability: A New List Analogue of Equitable Coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2003, Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West introduced a list analogue of equitable coloring called equitable choosability. In this paper, we motivate and define a new list analogue of equitable coloring called proportional choosability. A $k$-assignment $L$ for a graph $G$ specifies a list $L(v)$ of $k$ available colors for each vertex $v$ of $G$. An $L$-coloring assigns a color to each vertex $v$ from its list $L(v)$. For each color $c$, let $η(c)$ be the number of vertices $v$ whose list $L(v)$ contains $c$. A proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper $L$-coloring in which each color $c \in \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L(v)$ is used $\lfloor η(c)/k \rfloor$ or $\lceil η(c)/k \rceil$ times. A graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable if a proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ exists whenever $L$ is a $k$-assignment for $G$. We show that if a graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable, then every subgraph of $G$ is also proportionally $k$-choosable and also $G$ is proportionally $(k+1)$-choosable, unlike equitable choosability for which analogous claims would be false. We also show that any graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable whenever $k \geq Δ(G) + \lceil |V(G)|/2 \rceil$, and we use matching theory to completely characterize the proportional choosability of stars and the disjoint union of cliques.

Trees, parking functions, and standard monomials of skeleton ideals
Published in Australas. J. Comb. 81(1) (2021), pp. 126--151 • Search Publication
Parking functions are a widely studied class of combinatorial objects, with connections to several branches of mathematics. On the algebraic side, parking functions can be identified with the standard monomials of $M_n$, a certain monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S = {\mathbb K}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ where a set of generators are indexed by the nonempty subsets of $[n] = \{1,2,\dots,n\}$. Motivated by constructions from the theory of chip-firing on graphs we study generalizations of parking functions determined by $M^{(k)}_n$, a subideal of $M_n$ obtained by allowing only generators corresponding to subsets of $[n]$ of size at most $k$. For each $k$ the set of standard monomials of $M^{(k)}_n$, denoted $\text{stan}_n^k$, contains the usual parking functions and has interesting combinatorial properties in its own right. For general $k$ we show that elements of $\text{stan}_n^k$ can be recovered as certain vector-parking functions, which in turn leads to a formula for their count via results of Yan. The symmetric group $S_n$ naturally acts on the set $\text{stan}_n^k$ and we also obtain a formula for the number of orbits under this action. For the case of $k = n-2$ we study combinatorial interpretations of $\text{stan}_n^{n-2}$ and relate them to properties of uprooted trees in terms of root degree and surface inversions. As a corollary we obtain a combinatorial identity for $n^n$ involving Catalan numbers, reminiscent of a result of Benjamin and Juhnke. For the case of $k = 1$ we observe that the number of elements $\text{stan}_n^1$ is given by the determinant of the reduced `signless' Laplacian, which provides a weighted count for $|\text{stan}_n^1|$ in terms generalized spanning trees known as `spanning TU-subgraphs'. Our constructions naturally generalize to arbitrary graphs and lead to a number of open questions.
