Spherical Schubert varieties and pattern avoidance
Published in Selecta Mathematica, Volume 28 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
A normal variety $X$ is called $H$-spherical for the action of the complex reductive group $H$ if it contains a dense orbit of some Borel subgroup of $H$. We resolve a conjecture of Hodges--Yong by showing that their spherical permutations are characterized by permutation pattern avoidance. Together with results of Gao--Hodges--Yong this implies that the sphericality of a Schubert variety $X_w$ with respect to the largest possible Levi subgroup is characterized by this same pattern avoidance condition.
Pancyclism in the Generalized Sum of Digraphs
A digraph $D=(V,A)$ of order $n\geq 3$ is pancyclic, whenever $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ for each $k\in\{3,...,n\}$; and D is vertex-pancyclic iff, for each vertex $v\in V$ and each $k\in \{3,...,n\}$, $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ passing through $v$. Let $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$ be a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint digraphs. The generalized sum (g.s.) of $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$, denoted by $\oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ or $D_1\oplus D_2 \oplus \cdots \oplus D_k$, is the set of all digraphs D satisfying: (i) $V(D)=\bigcup_{i=1}^k V(D_i)$, (ii) $D\langle V(D_i) \rangle \cong D_i$ for $i=1, 2,..., k$; and (iii) for each pair of vertices belonging to different summands of D, there is exactly one arc between them, with an arbitrary but fixed direction. A digraph $D\in \oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ will be called a generalized sum (g.s.) of $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$. In this paper we prove that if $D_1$ and $D_2$ are two vertex disjoint Hamiltonian digraphs and $D\in D_1 \oplus D_2$ is strong, then at least one of the following assertions holds: $D$ is vertex-pancyclic, it is pancyclic or it is Hamiltonian and contains a directed cycle of length $l$ for each $l\in\{3,..., \max\{|V(D_i)|+1 \colon i\in\{1,2\}\}\}$. Moreover, we prove that if $D_1$, $D_2$,..., $D_k$ is a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint Hamiltonian digraphs, $n_i=|V(D_i)|$ for each $i\in \{1,...,k\}$ and $D \in \oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ is strong, then at least one of the following assertions holds: $D$ is vertex-pancyclic, it is pancyclic or it is Hamiltonian and contains a directed cycle of length $l$ for each $l\in \{3,..., \max\{\left(\sum_{i\in S} n_i\right) + 1 \colon S\subset\{1,..., k\}\text{ with }|S|=k-1\}\}$.
Arithmetic Progressions in Sumsets of Sparse Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set of positive integers $A \subset \mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$ is \emph{log-sparse} if there is an absolute constant $C$ so that for any positive integer $x$ the sequence contains at most $C$ elements in the interval $[x,2x)$. In this note we study arithmetic progressions in sums of log-sparse subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$. We prove that for any log-sparse subsets $S_1, \dots, S_n$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{> 0},$ the sumset $S = S_1 + \cdots + S_n$ cannot contain an arithmetic progression of size greater than $n^{(1+o(1))n}.$ We also show that this is nearly tight by proving that there exist log-sparse sets $S_1, \dots, S_n$ such that $S_1 + \cdots + S_n$ contains an arithmetic progression of size $n^{(1-o(1)) n}.$
On the Rényi-Ulam Game with Restricted Size Queries
Published in Discrete Optimization 48:1 (2023) 100772 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the following version of the well-known Rényi-Ulam game. Two players - the Questioner and the Responder - play against each other. The Responder thinks of a number from the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and the Questioner has to find this number. To do this, he can ask whether a chosen set of at most $k$ elements contains the thought number. The Responder answers with YES or NO immediately, but during the game, he may lie at most $\ell$ times. The minimum number of queries needed for the Questioner to surely find the unknown element is denoted by $RU_\ell^k(n)$. First, we develop a highly effective tool that we call Convexity Lemma. By using this lemma, we give a general lower bound of $RU_\ell^k(n)$ and an upper bound which differs from the lower one by at most $2\ell+1$. We also give its exact value when $n$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. With these, we managed to improve and generalize the results obtained by Meng, Lin, and Yang in a 2013 paper about the case $\ell=1$.
Extremal Graphs for a Spectral Inequality on Edge-Disjoint Spanning Trees
Liu, Hong, Gu, and Lai proved if the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ\ge 2m+2 \ge 4$ satisfies $λ_2(G) < δ- \frac{2m+1}{δ+1}$, then $G$ contains at least $m+1$ edge-disjoint spanning trees, which verified a generalization of a conjecture by Cioabă and Wong. We show this bound is essentially the best possible by constructing $d$-regular graphs $\mathcal{G}_{m,d}$ for all $d \ge 2m+2 \ge 4$ with at most $m$ edge-disjoint spanning trees and $λ_2(\mathcal{G}_{m,d}) < d-\frac{2m+1}{d+3}$. As a corollary, we show that a spectral inequality on graph rigidity by Cioabă, Dewar, and Gu is essentially tight.

Uncountably many minimal hereditary classes of graphs of unbounded clique-width
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 29 (2022), no. 1, Paper No. 1.63, 27 pp • View Publication • BIB
Given an infinite word over the alphabet $\{0,1,2,3\}$, we define a class of bipartite hereditary graphs $\mathcal{G}^α$, and show that $\mathcal{G}^α$ has unbounded clique-width unless $α$ contains at most finitely many non-zero letters. We also show that $\mathcal{G}^α$ is minimal of unbounded clique-width if and only if $α$ belongs to a precisely defined collection of words $Γ$. The set $Γ$ includes all almost periodic words containing at least one non-zero letter, which both enables us to exhibit uncountably many pairwise distinct minimal classes of unbounded clique width, and also proves one direction of a conjecture due to Collins, Foniok, Korpelainen, Lozin and Zamaraev. Finally, we show that the other direction of the conjecture is false, since $Γ$ also contains words that are \emph{not} almost periodic.

A note on exact minimum degree threshold for fractional perfect matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi determined the minimum $(k-1)$-degree threshold for the existence of fractional perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergrahs, and Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend extended this result by asymptotically determining the $d$-degree threshold for the range $k-1>d\ge k/2$. In this note, we prove the following exact degree threshold: Let $k,d$ be positive integers with $k\ge 4$ and $k-1>d\geq k/2$, and let $n$ be any integer with $n\ge k^2$. Then any $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum $d$-degree $δ_d(H)>{n-d\choose k-d} -{n-d-(\lceil n/k\rceil-1)\choose k-d}$ contains a fractional perfect matching. This lower bound on the minimum $d$-degree is best possible. We also determine optimal minimum $d$-degree conditions which guarantees the existence of fractional matchings of size $s$, where $0<s\le n/k$ (when $k/2\le d\le k-1$), or with $s$ large enough and $s\le n/k$ (when $2k/5<d<k/2$).

Vertex and edge metric dimensions of unicyclic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a graph G, the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G) (resp. E(G)) is called the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of G. In [16] it was shown that both vertex and edge metric dimension of a unicyclic graph G always take values from just two explicitly given consecutive integers that are derived from the structure of the graph. A natural problem that arises is to determine under what conditions these dimensions take each of the two possible values. In this paper for each of these two metric dimensions we characterize three graph configurations and prove that it takes the greater of the two possible values if and only if the graph contains at least one of these configurations. One of these configurations is the same for both dimensions, while the other two are specific for each of them. This enables us to establish the exact value of the metric dimensions for a unicyclic graph and also to characterize when each of these two dimensions is greater than the other one.

Symmetric graphs of prime valency with a transitive simple group
A graph $\Ga=(V,E)$ is called a Cayley graph of some group $T$ if the automorphism group $\Aut(\Ga)$ contains a subgroup $T$ which acts on regularly on $V$. If the subgroup $T$ is normal in $\Aut(\Ga)$ then $\Ga$ is called a normal Cayley graph of $T$. Let $r$ be an odd prime. Fang et al. \cite{FMW} proved that, with a finite number of exceptions for finite simple group $T$, every connected symmetric Cayley graph of $T$ of valency $r$ is normal. In this paper, employing maximal factorizations of finite almost simple groups, we work out a possible list of those exceptions for $T$.

Outerspatial 2-complexes: Extending the class of outerplanar graphs to three dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the class of outerspatial 2-complexes as the natural generalisation of the class of outerplanar graphs to three dimensions. Answering a question of O-joung Kwon, we prove that a locally 2-connected 2-complex is outerspatial if and only if it does not contain a surface of positive genus as a subcomplex and does not have a space minor that is a generalised cone over $K_4$ or $K_{2,3}$. This is applied to nested plane embeddings of graphs; that is, plane embeddings constrained by conditions placed on a set of cycles of the graph.

A generalization of Kruskal's theorem on tensor decomposition
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, Volume 11, 2023, e27 • View Publication • BIB
Kruskal's theorem states that a sum of product tensors constitutes a unique tensor rank decomposition if the so-called k-ranks of the product tensors are large. We prove a "splitting theorem" for sets of product tensors, in which the k-rank condition of Kruskal's theorem is weakened to the standard notion of rank, and the conclusion of uniqueness is relaxed to the statement that the set of product tensors splits (i.e. is disconnected as a matroid). Our splitting theorem implies a generalization of Kruskal's theorem. While several extensions of Kruskal's theorem are already present in the literature, all of these use Kruskal's original permutation lemma, and hence still cannot certify uniqueness when the k-ranks are below a certain threshold. Our generalization uses a completely new proof technique, contains many of these extensions, and can certify uniqueness below this threshold. We obtain several other useful results on tensor decompositions as consequences of our splitting theorem. We prove sharp lower bounds on tensor rank and Waring rank, which extend Sylvester's matrix rank inequality to tensors. We also prove novel uniqueness results for non-rank tensor decompositions.

On an application of higher energies to Sidon sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any finite set $A$ and an arbitrary $\varepsilon>0$ there is $k=k(\varepsilon)$ such that the higher energy ${\mathsf{E}}_k(A)$ is at most $|A|^{k+\varepsilon}$ unless $A$ has a very specific structure. As an application we obtain that any finite subset $A$ of the real numbers or the prime field either contains an additive Sidon--type subset of size $|A|^{1/2+c}$ or a multiplicative Sidon--type subset of size $|A|^{1/2+c}$.

Infinite Stable Graphs With Large Chromatic Number II
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a version of the strong Taylor's conjecture for stable graphs: if $G$ is a stable graph whose chromatic number is strictly greater than $\beth_2(\aleph_0)$ then $G$ contains all finite subgraphs of Sh$_n(ω)$ and thus has elementary extensions of unbounded chromatic number. This completes the picture from our previous work. The main new model theoretic ingredient is a generalization of the classical construction of Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski models to an infinitary setting, giving a new characterization of stability.

$K_4$-intersecting families of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ellis, Filmus, and Friedgut proved an old conjecture of Simonovits and Sós showing that the maximum size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices has size at most $2^{\binom{n}{2} - 3}$, with equality for the family of graphs containing some fixed triangle. They conjectured that their results extend to cross-intersecting families, as well to $K_t$-intersecting families. We prove these conjectures for $t \in \{3,4\}$, showing that if $\mathcal F_1$ and $\mathcal F_2$ are families of graphs on $n$ labeled vertices such that for any $G_1 \in \mathcal F_1$ and $G_2 \in \mathcal F_2$, $G_1 \cap G_2$ contains a $K_t$, then $\lvert \mathcal F_1 \rvert \lvert \mathcal F_2 \rvert \le 4^{\binom{n}{2} - \binom{t}{2}}$, with equality if and only if $\mathcal F_1 = \mathcal F_2$ consists of all graphs that contain some fixed $K_t$. We also establish a stability result. More generally, "$G_1 \cap G_2$ contains a $K_t$" can be replaced by "$G_1$ and $G_2$ agree on a non-$(t-1)$-colorable graph."
Maximising line subgraphs of diameter at most $t$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We wish to bring attention to a natural but slightly hidden problem, posed by Erdős and Nešetřil in the late 1980s, an edge version of the degree--diameter problem. Our main result is that, for any graph of maximum degree $Δ$ with more than $1.5 Δ^t$ edges, its line graph must have diameter larger than $t$. In the case where the graph contains no cycle of length $2t+1$, we can improve the bound on the number of edges to one that is exact for $t\in\{1,2,3,4,6\}$. In the case $Δ=3$ and $t=3$, we obtain an exact bound. Our results also have implications for the related problem of bounding the distance-$t$ chromatic index, $t>2$; in particular, for this we obtain an upper bound of $1.941Δ^t$ for graphs of large enough maximum degree $Δ$, markedly improving upon earlier bounds for this parameter.
Achromatic arboricity on complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the {\it {achromatic arboricity}} of the complete graph. This parameter arises from the arboricity of a graph as the achromatic index arises from the chromatic index. The achromatic arboricity of a graph $G$, denoted by $A_α(G)$, is the maximum number of colors that can be used to color the edges of $G$ such that every color class induces a forest but any two color classes contain a cycle. In particular, if $G$ is a complete graph we prove that \[\frac{1}{4}n^{\frac{3}{2}}-Θ(n) \leq A_α(G)\leq \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}n^{\frac{3}{2}}-Θ(n).\]

Configurations of rectangles in a set in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$. In this paper, we study the distribution of rectangles in a given set in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$. More precisely, for any $0<δ\le 1$, we prove that there exists an integer $q_0=q_0(δ)$ with the following property: if $q\ge q_0$ and $A$ is a multiplicative subgroup of $\mathbb{F}^*_q$ with $|A|\ge q^{2/3}$, then any set $S\subset \mathbb{F}_q^2$ with $|S|\ge δq^2$ contains at least $\gg \frac{|S|^4|A|^2}{q^5}$ rectangles with side-lengths in $A$. We also consider the case of rectangles with one fixed side-length and the other in a multiplicative subgroup $A$.

Compositions of Digraphs: A Survey
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this survey we overview known results and get several new results on digraph compositions which generalize several classes of digraphs, such as quasi-transitive digraphs. After an introductory section, the paper is divided into six sections: connectivity and linkages, kings and kernels, paths, cycles, acyclic spanning subdigraphs, strong spanning subdigraphs. This survey also contains some conjectures and open problems for further study.

Note on the number of balanced independent sets in the Hamming cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Q_d$ be the $d$-dimensional Hamming cube and $N=|V(Q_d)|=2^d$. An independent set $I$ in $Q_d$ is called balanced if $I$ contains the same number of even and odd vertices. We show that the logarithm of the number of balanced independent sets in $Q_d$ is \[(1-Θ(1/\sqrt d))N/2.\] The key ingredient of the proof is an improved version of "Sapozhenko's graph container lemma."
