We consider a q-analogue of the standard bilinear form on the commutative ring of symmetric functions. The q=-1 case leads to a Z-graded Hopf superalgebra which we call the algebra of odd symmetric functions. In the odd setting we describe counterparts of the elementary and complete symmetric functions, power sums, Schur functions, and combinatorial interpretations of associated change of basis relations.

Primary decomposition of commutative monoid congruences is insensitive to certain features of primary decomposition in commutative rings. These features are captured by the more refined theory of mesoprimary decomposition of congruences, introduced here complete with witnesses and associated prime objects. The combinatorial theory of mesoprimary decomposition lifts to arbitrary binomial ideals in monoid algebras. The resulting binomial mesoprimary decomposition is a new type of intersection decomposition for binomial ideals that enjoys computational efficiency and independence from ground field hypotheses. Binomial primary decompositions are easily recovered from mesoprimary decomposition.
On realizing zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings
In this paper, we determine bipartite graphs and complete graphs with horns, which are realizable as zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings. As applications, we classify commutative rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graph $\mathbb {AG}(R)$ are either bipartite graphs or complete graphs with horns.

This paper studies the co-maximal graph $\Om(R)$, the induced subgraph $\G(R)$ of $\Om(R)$ whose vertex set is $R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))$ and a retract $\G_r(R)$ of $\G(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative ring. We show that the core of $\G(R)$ is a union of triangles and rectangles, while a vertex in $\G(R)$ is either an end vertex or a vertex in the core. For a non-local ring $R$, we prove that both the chromatic number and clique number of $\G(R)$ are identical with the number of maximal ideals of $R$. A graph $\G_r(R)$ is also introduced on the vertex set $\{Rx|\,x\in R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))\}$, and graph properties of $\G_r(R)$ are studied.

Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and in particular the resulting nonvanishing criterion is one of the most powerful algebraic tools in combinatorics, with many important applications. In this paper we extend the nonvanishing theorem in two directions. We prove a version allowing multiple points. Also, we establish a variant which is valid over arbitrary commutative rings, not merely over subrings of fields. As an application, we prove extensions of the theorem of Alon and Füredi on hyperplane coverings of discrete cubes.

Let $L_{K}(A)$ be the free Lie algebra on a finite alphabet $A$ over a commutative ring $K$ with unity. For a word $u$ in the free monoid $A^{*}$ let $\tilde{u}$ denote its reversal. Two words in $A^{*}$ are called twin (resp. anti-twin) if they appear with equal (resp. opposite) coefficients in each Lie polynomial. Let $l$ denote the left-normed Lie bracketing and $λ$ be its adjoint map with respect to the canonical scalar product on the corresponding free associative algebra. Studying the kernel of $λ$ and using several techniques from combinatorics on words and the shuffle algebra, we show that when $K$ is of characteristic zero two words $u$ and $v$ of common length $n$ that lie in the support of ${\mathcal L}_{K}(A)$ - i.e., they are neither powers $a^{n}$ of letters $a \in A$ with exponent $n > 1$ nor palindromes of even length - are twin (resp. anti-twin) if and only if $u = v$ or $u = \tilde{v}$ and $n$ is odd (resp. $u = \tilde{v}$ and $n$ is even).
On Powers of Some Power Series
We show that the compositions of positive integers may be interpreted in terms of powers of some power series, over arbitrary commutative ring. As consequences, several closed formulas for the compositions as well as for the generalized compositions with a fixed number of parts are derived. Some results on compositions obtained in some recent papers are consequences of these formulas.
The diameters of commuting graphs of linear groups and matrix rings over the integers modulo m
The commuting graph of a group G, denoted by Gamma(G), is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of G and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if they commute. Let Z_m be the commutative ring of equivalence classes of integers modulo m. In this paper we investigate the connectivity and diameters of the commuting graphs of GL(n,Z_m) to contribute to the conjecture that there is a universal upper bound on diam(Gamma(G)) for any finite group G when Gamma(G) is connected. For any composite m, it is shown that Gamma(GL(n,Z_m)) and Gamma(M(n,Z_m)) are connected and diam(Gamma(GL(n,Z_m))) = diam(Gamma(M(n,Z_m))) = 3. For m a prime, the instances of connectedness and absolute bounds on the diameters of Gamma(GL(n,Z_m)) and Gamma(M(n,Z_m)) when they are connected are concluded from previous results.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with $\Z(R)$ its set of zero-divisors. In this paper, we study the total graph of $R$, denoted by $\T(Γ(R))$. It is the (undirected) graph with all elements of $R$ as vertices, and for distinct $x, y\in R$, the vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x + y\in\Z(R)$. We investigate properties of the total graph of $R$ and determine all isomorphism classes of finite commutative rings whose total graph has genus at most one (i.e., a planar or toroidal graph). In addition, it is shown that, given a positive integer $g$, there are only finitely many finite rings whose total graph has genus $g$.

Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.

Let $\H_n$ be a (degenerate or non-degenerate) Hecke algebra of type $G(\ell,1,n)$, defined over a commutative ring $R$ with one, and let $S(\bmu)$ be a Specht module for $\H_n$. This paper shows that the induced Specht module $S(\bmu)\otimes_{\H_n}\H_{n+1}$ has an explicit Specht filtration.
Integral point sets over finite fields
We consider point sets in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ where each Euclidean distance of two points is an element of $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sets are called integral point sets and were originally defined in $m$-dimensional Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{E}^m$. We determine their maximal cardinality $\mathcal{I}(\mathbb{F}_q,2)$. For arbitrary commutative rings $\mathcal{R}$ instead of $\mathbb{F}_q$ or for further restrictions as no three points on a line or no four points on a circle we give partial results. Additionally we study the geometric structure of the examples with maximum cardinality.

Let X be a simplicial complex with the ground set V. Define its Alexander dual as a simplicial complex X* = {A \subset V: V \setminus A \notin X}. The combinatorial Alexander duality states that the i-th reduced homology group of X is isomorphic to the (|V|-i-3)-th reduced cohomology group of X* (over a given commutative ring R). We give a self-contained proof.
Commutative rings with toroidal zero-divisor graphs
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $Γ(R)$ denote its zero-divisor graph. In this paper, we investigate the genus number of the compact Riemann surface which $Γ(R)$ can be embedded and illustrate all finite commutative rings $R$ (up to isomorphism) such that $Γ(R)$ is either toroidal or planar.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. Let $Γ(R)$ be a graph with vertices as elements of $R$, where two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $Ra+Rb=R$. In this paper we consider a subgraph $Γ_2(R)$ of $Γ(R)$ which consists of non-unit elements. We look at the connectedness and the diameter of this graph. We completely characterize the diameter of the graph $Γ_2(R)\setminus\J(R)$. In addition, it is shown that for two finite semi-local rings $R$ and $S$, if $R$ is reduced, then $Γ(R)\congΓ(S)$ if and only if $R\cong S$.

We study cyclotomic association schemes over a finite commutative ring $R$ with identity. The main interest for us is to identify the normal cyclotomic schemes $C$, i.e. those for which $Aut(C)$ is a subgroup of the one-dimensional affine semilinear group over $R$. The problem is reduced to the case when the ring $R$ is local in which a necessary condition of normality in terms of the subgroup of $R^\times$ defining $C$, is given. This condition is proved to be sufficient for a class of local rings including the Galois rings of odd characteristic.
Generalized symmetric functions

It is well known that over an infinite field the ring of symmetric functions in a finite number of variables is isomorphic to the one of polynomial functions on matrices that are invariants by the action of conjugation by general linear group. We generalize this result showing that the abelianization of the algebra of the symmetric tensors of fixed order over a free associative algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of the polynomials invariants of several matrices over an infinite field or the integers. While proving the main result we find generators and relations of abelianized divided powers of an algebra over any commutative ring.

Let R be a commutative ring and let n,m be two positive integers. The symmetric group on n letters acts diagonally on the ring of polynomials in nxm variables with coefficients in R. The subrings of invariants for this action is called the ring of multisymmetric functions since these are the usual symmetric functions when m=1. In this paper we will give a presentation in terms of generators and relations that holds for any R and any n,m answering in this way to a classical question. I would like to thank M.Brion, C.De Concini and C.Procesi, in alphabetical order, for useful discussions.
