Perfect colourings of simplices and hypercubes in dimension four and five with few colours
A vertex colouring of some graph is called perfect if each vertex of colour $i$ has the same number $a_{ij}$ of neighbours of colour $j$. Here we determine all perfect colourings of the edge graphs of the hypercube in dimensions 4 and 5 by two and three colours, respectively. For comparison we list all perfect colourings of the edge graphs of the simplex in dimensions 4 and 5, respectively.

Nowhere dense Ramsey sets
A set of points $S$ in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called \textit{Ramsey} if any finite partition of $\mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ yields a monochromatic copy of $S$. While characterization of Ramsey set remains a major open problem in the area, a stronger ``density'' concept was considered in [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 3, 1--7, 1990]: If $S$ is a $d$-dimensional simplex, then for any $μ>0$ there is an integer $d:=d(S,μ)$ and finite configuration $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ such that any subconfiguration $Y\subseteq X$ with $|Y|\geq μ|X|$ contains a copy of $S$. Complementing this, here we show the existence of $μ:=μ(S)$ and of an infinite configuration $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ with the property that any finite coloring of $X$ yields a monochromatic copy of $S$, yet for any finite set of points $Y\subseteq X$ contains a subset $Z\subseteq Y$ of size $|Z|\geq μ|Y|$ without a copy of $S$.
Polymatroids are to finite groups as matroids are to finite fields
Given a subgroup $\mathcal{H}$ of a product of finite groups $\mathcal{G} = \displaystyle\prod^n_{i=1} Γ_i$ and $b>1,$ we define a polymatroid $P(\mathcal{H},b).$ If all of the $Γ_i$ are isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z},$ $p$ a prime, and $b=p,$ then $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ is the usual matroid associated to any $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-matrix whose row space equals $\mathcal{H}.$ In general, there are many ways in which the relationship between $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ and $\mathcal{H}$ mirrors that of the relationship between a matroid and a subspace of a finite vector space. These include representability by excluded minors, the Crapo-Rota critical theorem, the existence of a concrete algebraic object representing the polymatroid dual of $P(\mathcal{H},b),$ analogs of Greene's theorem and the MacWilliams identities when $\mathcal{H}$ is a group code over a nonabelian group, and a connection to the combinatorial Laplacian of a quotient space determined by $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}.$ We use the group Crapo-Rota critical theorem to demonstrate an extension to hypergraphs of the classical duality between proper colorings and nowhere-zero flows on graphs.

Multicolor, multipartite Ramsey numbers for quadrilateral
The $p$-partite Ramsey number for quadrilateral, denoted by $r_p(C_4,k)$, is the least positive integer $n$ such that any coloring of the edges of a complete $p$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each partition with $k$ colors will result in a monochromatic copy of $C_4$. In this paper, we present an upper bound for $r_p(C_4,k)$ and the exact values of $r_p(C_4,2)$ for all $p\geq2$. In tripartite case we show that $r_3(C_4,k) \leq \lfloor (k+1)^2/2\rfloor-1$ and the exact value of 4-color tripartite Ramsey number $r_3(C_4,4)=11$.

List Coloring of some Cayley graphs using Kernel perfections
In this paper, we try to determine exact or bounds on the choosability, or list chromatic numbers of some Cayley graphs, typically some Unitary Cayley graphs and Cayley graphs on Dihedral groups.
Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions XV. Even-hole-free graphs with bounded clique number have logarithmic treewidth
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every integer $t\geq 1$ there exists an integer $c_t\geq 1$ such that every $n$-vertex even-hole-free graph with no clique of size $t$ has treewidth at most $c_t\log{n}$. This resolves a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon, who also proved that the logarithmic bound is asymptotically best possible. It follows that several \textsf{NP}-hard problems such as \textsc{Stable Set}, \textsc{Vertex Cover}, \textsc{Dominating Set} and \textsc{Coloring} admit polynomial-time algorithms on this class of graphs. As a consequence, for every positive integer $r$, $r$-{\sc Coloring} can be solved in polynomial time on even-hole-free graphs without any assumptions on clique size. As part of the proof, we show that there is an integer $d$ such that every even-hole-free graph has a balanced separator which is contained in the (closed) neighborhood of at most $d$ vertices. This is of independent interest; for instance, it implies the existence of efficient approximation algorithms for certain \textsf{NP}-hard problems while restricted to the class of all even-hole-free graphs.
Owings-like theorems for infinitely many colours or finite monochromatic sets
Published in Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 175 (2024), 103495 • Search Publication
Inspired by Owings's problem, we investigate whether, for a given an Abelian group $G$ and cardinal numbers $κ,θ$, every colouring $c:G\longrightarrowθ$ yields a subset $X\subseteq G$ with $|X|=κ$ such that $X+X$ is monochromatic. (Owings's problem asks this for $G=\mathbb Z$, $θ=2$ and $κ=\aleph_0$; this is known to be false for the same $G$ and $κ$ but $θ=3$.) We completely settle the question for $κ$ and $θ$ both finite (by obtaining sufficient and necessary conditions for a positive answer) and for $κ$ and $θ$ both infinite (with a negative answer). Also, in the case where $θ$ is infinite but $κ$ is finite, we obtain some sufficient conditions for a negative answer as well as an example with a positive answer.

Diagonal poset Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A poset $(Q,\le_Q)$ contains an induced copy of a poset $(P,\le_P)$ if there exists an injective mapping $φ\colon P\to Q$ such that for any two elements $X,Y\in P$, $X\le_P Y$ if and only if $φ(X)\le_Q φ(Y)$. By $Q_n$ we denote the Boolean lattice $(2^{[n]},\subseteq)$. The poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ for posets $P$ and $Q$ is the least integer $N$ for which any coloring of the elements of $Q_N$ in blue and red contains either a blue induced copy of $P$ or a red induced copy of $Q$. In this paper, we show that $R(Q_m,Q_n)\le nm-\big(1-o(1)\big)n\log m$ where $n\ge m$ and $m$ is sufficiently large. This improves the best known upper bound on $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ from $n^2-n+2$ to $n^2-\big(1-o(1)\big) n\log n$. Furthermore, we determine $R(P,P)$ where $P$ is an $n$-fork or $n$-diamond up to an additive constant of $2$. A poset $(Q,\le_Q)$ contains a weak copy of $(P,\le_P)$ if there is an injection $ψ\colon P\to Q$ such that $ψ(X)\le_Q ψ(Y)$ for any $X,Y\in P$ with $X\le_P Y$. The weak poset Ramsey number $R^{\text{w}}(P,Q)$ is the smallest $N$ for which any blue/red-coloring of $Q_N$ contains a blue weak copy of $P$ or a red weak copy of $Q$. We show that $R^{\text{w}}(Q_n,Q_n)\le 0.96n^2$.

Coloring problems on arrangements of pseudolines
Arrangements of pseudolines are a widely studied generalization of line arrangements. They are defined as a finite family of infinite curves in the Euclidean plane, any two of which intersect at exactly one point. One can state various related coloring problems depending on the number $n$ of pseudolines. In this article, we show that $n$ colors are sufficient for coloring the crossings avoiding twice the same color on the boundary of any cell, or, alternatively, avoiding twice the same color along any pseudoline. We also study the problem of coloring the pseudolines avoiding monochromatic crossings.

Peaceful Colourings
Published in Bull. Inst. Math. Acad. Sin. (N.S.) 20 (2025), 95-129 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce peaceful colourings, a variant of $h$-conflict free colourings. We call a colouring with no monochromatic edges $p$-peaceful if for each vertex $v$, there are at most $p$ neighbours of $v$ coloured with a colour appearing on another neighbour of $v$. An $h$-conflict-free colouring of a graph is a (vertex)-colouring with no monochromatic edges so that for every vertex $v$, the number of neighbours of $v$ which are coloured with a colour appearing on no other neighbour of $v$ is at least the minimum of $h$ and the degree of $v$. If $G$ is $Δ$-regular then it has an $h$-conflict free colouring precisely if it has a $(Δ-h)$-peaceful colouring. We focus on the minimum $p_Δ$ of those $p$ for which every graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has a $p$-peaceful colouring with $Δ+1$ colours. We show that $p_Δ> (1-\frac{1}{e}-o(1))Δ$ and that for graphs of bounded codegree, $p_Δ\leq (1-\frac{1}{e}+o(1))Δ$. We ask if the latter result can be improved by dropping the bound on the codegree. As a partial result, we show that $p_Δ\leq \frac{8000}{8001}Δ$ for sufficiently large $Δ$.

Colouring graphs from random lists
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given positive integers $k \leq m$ and a graph $G$, a family of lists $L = \{L(v) : v \in V(G)\}$ is said to be a random $(k,m)$-list-assignment if for every $v \in V(G)$ the list $L(v)$ is a subset of $\{1, \ldots, m\}$ of size $k$, chosen uniformly at random and independently of the choices of all other vertices. An $n$-vertex graph $G$ is said to be a.a.s. $(k,m)$-colourable if $\lim_{n \to \infty} \mathbb{P}(G \textrm{ is } L-colourable) = 1$, where $L$ is a random $(k,m)$-list-assignment. We prove that if $m \gg n^{1/k^2} Δ^{1/k}$ and $m \geq 3 k^2 Δ$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$ and $k \geq 3$ is an integer, then $G$ is a.a.s. $(k,m)$-colourable. This is not far from being best possible, forms a continuation of the so-called palette sparsification results, and proves in a strong sense a conjecture of Casselgren. Additionally, we consider this problem under the additional assumption that $G$ is $H$-free for some graph $H$. For various graphs $H$, we estimate the smallest $m$ for which an $H$-free $n$-vertex graph $G$ is a.a.s. $(k,m)$-colourable. This extends and improves several results of Casselgren.

Sudoku Number of Corona of Graphs
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$ with chromatic number $χ(G) = k$, let $S \subset V$ and let $C_0$ be a $k$-coloring of the induced subgraph $G[S]$. The coloring $C_0$ is called an extendable coloring, if $C_0$ can be extended to a $k$-coloring of $G$ and it is a Sudoku coloring of $G$ if the extension is unique. The smallest order of such an induced subgraph $G[S]$ of $G$ which admits a Sudoku coloring is called the Sudoku number of $G$ and is denoted by $sn(G)$. In this paper, we first introduce the notion of uniquely color extendable vertex and then we obtain the lower and upper bounds for the Sudoku number of $G \circ K_1$. Some families of graphs which attain these bounds are also obtained. The exact value of the Sudoku number of corona of $C_n$, $W_n$ and $K_n$ with $K_1$ and $C_n \circ P_m$ are also obtained.

At the end of the spectrum: Chromatic bounds for the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph with largest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue $λ_N$ and (vertex) coloring number $χ$, it is known that $λ_N\geq χ/(χ-1)$. Here we prove properties of graphs for which this bound is sharp, and we study the multiplicity of $χ/(χ-1)$. We then describe a family of graphs with largest eigenvalue $χ/(χ-1)$. We also study the spectrum of the $1$-sum of two graphs (also known as graph joining or coalescing), with a focus on the maximal eigenvalue. Finally, we give upper bounds on $λ_N$ in terms of $χ$.
Irreducible Markov Chains on spaces of graphs with fixed degree-color sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a colored generalization of the famous simple-switch Markov chain for sampling the set of graphs with a fixed degree sequence. Here we consider the space of graphs with colored vertices, in which we fix the degree sequence and another statistic arising from the vertex coloring, and prove that the set can be connected with simple color-preserving switches or moves. These moves form a basis for defining an irreducible Markov chain necessary for testing statistical model fit to block-partitioned network data. Our methods further generalize well-known algebraic results from the 1990s: namely, that the corresponding moves can be used to construct a regular triangulation for a generalization of the second hypersimplex. On the other hand, in contrast to the monochromatic case, we show that for simple graphs, the 1-norm of the moves necessary to connect the space increases with the number of colors.

Edge coloring lattice graphs
We develop the theory of the edge coloring of infinite lattice graphs, proving a necessary and sufficient condition for a proper edge coloring of a patch of a lattice graph to induce a proper edge coloring of the entire lattice graph by translation. This condition forms the cornerstone of a method that finds nearly minimal or minimal edge colorings of infinite lattice graphs. In case a nearly minimal edge coloring is requested, the running time is $O(μ^2 D^4)$, where $μ$ is the number of edges in one cell (or `basis graph') of the lattice graph and $D$ is the maximum distance between two cells so that there is an edge from within one cell to the other. In case a minimal edge coloring is requested, we lack an upper bound on the running time, which we find need not pose a limitation in practice; we use the method to minimal edge color the meshes of all $k$-uniform tilings of the plane for $k\leq 6$, while utilizing modest computational resources. We find that all these lattice graphs are Vizing class~I. Relating edge colorings to quantum circuits, our work finds direct application by offering minimal-depth quantum circuits in the areas of quantum simulation, quantum optimization, and quantum state verification.

On coloring graphs with well-distributed edge density
In this paper, we introduce a class of graphs which we call average hereditary graphs. Many graphs that occur in the usual graph theory applications belong to this class of graphs. Many popular types of graphs fall under this class, such as regular graphs, trees and other popular classes of graphs. The paper aims to explore some interesting properties regarding colorings average hereditary graphs. We prove a new upper bound for the chromatic number of a graph in terms of its maximum average degree and show that this bound is an improvement on previous bounds. From this, we show a relationship between the average degree and the chromatic number of an average hereditary graph. We then show that even with new bound, the graph 3-coloring problem remains NP-hard when the input is restricted to average hereditary graphs. We provide an equivalent condition for a graph to be average hereditary, through which we show that we can decide if a given graph is average hereditary in polynomial time.

Proper Z4 x Z2-colorings: structural characterization with application to some snarks
A proper abelian coloring of a cubic graph G by a finite abelian group A is any proper edge-coloring of G by the non-zero elements of A such that the sum of the colors of the three edges incident to any vertex v of G equals zero. It is known that cyclic groups of order smaller than 10 do not color all bridgeless cubic graphs, and that all abelian groups of order at least 12 do. This leaves the question open for the four so called exceptional groups Z4 x Z2, Z3 x Z3, Z10 and Z11 for snarks. It is conjectured in literature that every cubic graph has a proper abelian coloring by each exceptional group and it is further known that the existence of a proper Z4 x Z2-coloring of G implies the existence of a proper coloring of G by all the remaining exceptional groups. In this paper, we give a characterization of a proper Z4 x Z2-coloring in terms of the existence of a matching M in a 2-factor F of G with particular properties. Moreover, in order to modify an arbitrary matching M so that it meets the requirements of the characterization, we first introduce an incidence structure of the cycles of F in relation to the cycles of G - M. Further, we provide a sufficient condition under which M can be modified into a desired matching in terms of particular properties of the introduced incidence structure. We conclude the paper by applying the results to some oddness two snarks, in particular to permutation snarks. We believe that the approach of this paper with some additional refinements extends to larger classes of snarks, if not to all in general.

A polynomial time algorithm to find star chromatic index on bounded treewidth graphs with given maximum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring with no 2-colored path or cycle of length four. The star edge coloring problem is to find an edge coloring of a given graph $G$ with minimum number $k$ of colors such that $G$ admits a star edge coloring with $k$ colors. This problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, for a bounded treewidth graph with given maximum degree, we show that it can be solved in polynomial time.

Colorings of $k$-sets with low discrepancy on small sets
For $0<δ\leq 1$, let $R_k(m;δ)$ denote the smallest $N$ such that every coloring of $k$-element subsets by two colors yields an $m$-element set $M$ with relative discrepancy $δ$, which means that one color class has at least $(\frac{1+δ}2){m\choose k}$ elements. The number $R_k(m;δ)$ may be viewed as an extension of the usual $k$-hypergraph Ramsey number because $R_k(m)=R_k(m,1)$. Our main result is the following theorem. %\begin{theorem} For some constants $c,k_0$, and $\eps>0$, and for all $k\geq k_0$, $c\log k\leq n\leq k/11$, \[ R_k(k+n);2^{-\eps n})\geq \tw_{\lfloor k/n\rfloor}(2). \] %\end{theorem} In particular, for $n=\lceil c\log k\rceil$, we get a tower of height $δk/\log k$ and relative discrepancy polynomial in~$k$.

Block graphs - some general results and their equitable colorings
In this paper, we consider some general properties of block graphs as well as the equitable coloring problem in this class of graphs. In the first part we establish the relation between two structural parameters for general block graphs. We also give complete characterization of block graphs with given value of parameter $α_{\min}$. In the next part of the paper we confirm the hypothesis for some subclass of GLS block graphs in which the problem of EQUITABLE COLORING is unlikely to be polynomial time solvable. We give also an equitable $(n+2)$-algorithm for all GLS block graphs. As a by product we prove that the equitable chromatic spectrum for the subclass of GLS block graphs is gap-free.
