Asymptotic enumeration of correlation-immune boolean functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A boolean function of $n$ boolean variables is {correlation-immune} of order $k$ if the function value is uncorrelated with the values of any $k$ of the arguments. Such functions are of considerable interest due to their cryptographic properties, and are also related to the orthogonal arrays of statistics and the balanced hypercube colourings of combinatorics. The {weight} of a boolean function is the number of argument values that produce a function value of 1. If this is exactly half the argument values, that is, $2^{n-1}$ values, a correlation-immune function is called {resilient}. An asymptotic estimate of the number $N(n,k)$ of $n$-variable correlation-immune boolean functions of order $k$ was obtained in 1992 by Denisov for constant $k$. Denisov repudiated that estimate in 2000, but we will show that the repudiation was a mistake. The main contribution of this paper is an asymptotic estimate of $N(n,k)$ which holds if $k$ increases with $n$ within generous limits and specialises to functions with a given weight, including the resilient functions. In the case of $k=1$, our estimates are valid for all weights.

On Fall Colorings of Graphs
A fall $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ sees all $k$ colors on its closed neighborhood. We denote ${\rm Fall}(G)$ the set of all positive integers $k$ for which $G$ has a fall $k$-coloring. In this paper, we study fall colorings of lexicographic product of graphs and categorical product of graphs and answer a question of \cite{dun} about fall colorings of categorical product of complete graphs. Then, we study fall colorings of union of graphs. Then, we prove that fall $k$-colorings of a graph can be reduced into proper $k$-colorings of graphs in a specified set. Then, we characterize fall colorings of Mycielskian of graphs. Finally, we prove that for each bipartite graph $G$, ${\rm Fall}(G^{c})\subseteq \{χ(G^{c}) \}$ and it is polynomial time to decision whether or not ${\rm Fall}(G^{c})=\{χ(G^{c}) \}$.

On b-continuity Of Kneser Graphs of type KG(2k+1,k)
In this paper, we will introduce an special kind of graph homomorphisms namely semi-locally-surjective graph homomorphisms and show some relations between semi-locally-surjective graph homomorphisms and colorful colorings of graphs and then we prove that for each natural number $k$, the Kneser graph $KG(2k+1,k)$ is $b$-continuous. Finally, we introduce some special conditions for graphs to be $b$-continuous.

Invariant colorings of random planar maps

Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequence of coarser and coarser partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an equivariant way, such that with high probability the cell of a fixed point is like a cube, and the labels in it are i.i.d. Then we define a matching for a fixed finite cell, which stabilizes as we repeatedly apply it for the cells of the consecutive partitions. Our methods also work in the case when one wants to match points of two Poisson processes, and they may be applied to allocation questions.

Phase transition for the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for coloring regular trees
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2012, Vol. 22, No. 6, 2210-2239 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for random k-colorings of the complete tree with branching factor b undergoes a phase transition at $k=b(1+o_b(1))/\ln{b}$. Our main result shows nearly sharp bounds on the mixing time of the dynamics on the complete tree with n vertices for $k=Cb/\ln{b}$ colors with constant C. For $C\geq1$ we prove the mixing time is $O(n^{1+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$. On the other side, for $C<1$ the mixing time experiences a slowing down; in particular, we prove it is $O(n^{1/C+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$ and $Ω(n^{1/C-o_b(1)})$. The critical point C=1 is interesting since it coincides (at least up to first order) with the so-called reconstruction threshold which was recently established by Sly. The reconstruction threshold has been of considerable interest recently since it appears to have close connections to the efficiency of certain local algorithms, and this work was inspired by our attempt to understand these connections in this particular setting.

On Dynamic Coloring of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A dynamic coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ of degree at least 2, the neighbors of $v$ receive at least 2 colors. In this paper we present some upper bounds for the dynamic chromatic number of graphs. In this regard, we shall show that there is a constant $c$ such that for every $k$-regular graph $G$, $χ_d(G)\leq χ(G)+ c\ln k +1$. Also, we introduce an upper bound for the dynamic list chromatic number of regular graphs.

Weighted Graph Colorings
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 138, 496-542 (2010) • View Publication • BIB
We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns $q$ colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting $w$ that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial $Ph(G,q,w)$ associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for $Ph(G,q,w)$ for lattice strip graphs $G$ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of $Ph(G,q,w)$ in the $q$ and $w$ planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of $G$ are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.

Colorings of hypergraphs, perfect graphs, and associated primes of powers of monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a natural one-to-one correspondence between squarefree monomial ideals and finite simple hypergraphs via the cover ideal construction. Let H be a finite simple hypergraph, and let J = J(H) be its cover ideal in a polynomial ring R. We give an explicit description of all associated primes of R/J^s, for any power J^s of J, in terms of the coloring properties of hypergraphs arising from H. We also give an algebraic method for determining the chromatic number of H, proving that it is equivalent to a monomial ideal membership problem involving powers of J. Our work yields two new purely algebraic characterizations of perfect graphs, independent of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem; the first characterization is in terms of the sets Ass(R/J^s), while the second characterization is in terms of the saturated chain condition for associated primes.

Non-projectability of polytope skeleta
Published in Adv. Math. 229 (2012), no. 1, 79-101 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate necessary conditions for the existence of projections of polytopes that preserve full k-skeleta. More precisely, given the combinatorics of a polytope and the dimension e of the target space, what are obstructions to the existence of a geometric realization of a polytope with the given combinatorial type such that a linear projection to e-space strictly preserves the k-skeleton. Building on the work of Sanyal (2009), we develop a general framework to calculate obstructions to the existence of such realizations using topological combinatorics. Our obstructions take the form of graph colorings and linear integer programs. We focus on polytopes of product type and calculate the obstructions for products of polygons, products of simplices, and wedge products of polytopes. Our results show the limitations of constructions for the deformed products of polygons of Sanyal & Ziegler (2009) and the wedge product surfaces of Rörig & Ziegler (2009) and complement their results.

Nowhere-Harmonic Colorings of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Proper vertex colorings of a graph are related to its boundary map, also called its signed vertex-edge incidence matrix. The vertex Laplacian of a graph, a natural extension of the boundary map, leads us to introduce nowhere-harmonic colorings and analogues of the chromatic polynomial and Stanley's theorem relating negative evaluations of the chromatic polynomial to acyclic orientations. Further, we discuss some examples demonstrating that nowhere-harmonic colorings are more complicated from an enumerative perspective than proper colorings.

An improved bound for the stepping-up lemma
Published • View Publication • BIB
The partition relation N \to (n)_{\ell}^k means that whenever the k-tuples of an N-element set are \ell-colored, there is a monochromatic set of size n, where a set is called monochromatic if all its k-tuples have the same color. The logical negation of N \to (n)_{\ell}^k is written as N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k. An ingenious construction of Erdős and Hajnal known as the stepping-up lemma gives a negative partition relation for higher uniformity from one of lower uniformity, effectively gaining an exponential in each application. Namely, if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 3, and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (2n+k-4)_{\ell}^{k+1}. In this note we give an improved construction for k \geq 4. We introduce a general class of colorings which extends the framework of Erdős and Hajnal and can be used to establish negative partition relations. We show that if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 4 and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (n+3)_{\ell}^{k+1}. If also k is odd or \ell \geq 3, then we get the better bound 2^N \not \to (n+2)_{\ell}^{k+1}. This improved bound gives a coloring of the k-tuples whose largest monochromatic set is a factor Ω(2^{k}) smaller than given by the original version of the stepping-up lemma. We give several applications of our result to lower bounds on hypergraph Ramsey numbers. In particular, for fixed \ell \geq 4 we determine up to an absolute constant factor (which is independent of k) the size of the largest guaranteed monochromatic set in an \ell-coloring of the k-tuples of an N-set.

On the binary codes with parameters of doubly-shortened 1-perfect codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 57(2) 2010, 181-194 • View Publication • BIB
We show that any binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $C_1$ is a part of an equitable partition (perfect coloring) $\{C_1,C_2,C_3,C_4\}$ of the $n$-cube with the parameters $((0,1,n-1,0)(1,0,n-1,0)(1,1,n-4,2)(0,0,n-1,1))$. Now the possibility to lengthen the code $C_1$ to a 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ is equivalent to the possibility to split the part $C_4$ into two distance-3 codes or, equivalently, to the biparticity of the graph of distances 1 and 2 of $C_4$. In any case, $C_1$ is uniquely embeddable in a twofold 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ with some structural restrictions, where by a twofold 1-perfect code we mean that any vertex of the space is within radius 1 from exactly two codewords.

On weight distributions of perfect colorings and completely regular codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 61(3) 2011, 315-329 • View Publication • BIB
A vertex coloring of a graph is called "perfect" if for any two colors $a$ and $b$, the number of the color-$b$ neighbors of a color-$a$ vertex $x$ does not depend on the choice of $x$, that is, depends only on $a$ and $b$ (the corresponding partition of the vertex set is known as "equitable"). A set of vertices is called "completely regular" if the coloring according to the distance from this set is perfect. By the "weight distribution" of some coloring with respect to some set we mean the information about the number of vertices of every color at every distance from the set. We study the weight distribution of a perfect coloring (equitable partition) of a graph with respect to a completely regular set (in particular, with respect to a vertex if the graph is distance-regular). We show how to compute this distribution by the knowledge of the color composition over the set. For some partial cases of completely regular sets, we derive explicit formulas of weight distributions. Since any (other) completely regular set itself generates a perfect coloring, this gives universal formulas for calculating the weight distribution of any completely regular set from its parameters. In the case of Hamming graphs, we prove a very simple formula for the weight enumerator of an arbitrary perfect coloring. Codewords: completely regular code; equitable partition; partition design; perfect coloring; perfect structure; regular partition; weight distribution; weight enumerator.

A Generalization of Kneser's Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate some coloring properties of Kneser graphs. A star-free coloring is a proper coloring $c:V(G)\to \Bbb{N}$ such that no path with three vertices may be colored with just two consecutive numbers. The minimum positive integer $t$ for which there exists a star-free coloring $c: V(G) \to \{1,2,..., t\}$ is called the star-free chromatic number of $G$ and denoted by $χ_s(G)$. In view of Tucker-Ky Fan's lemma, we show that for any Kneser graph ${\rm KG}(n,k)$ we have $χ_s({\rm KG}(n,k))\geq \max\{2χ({\rm KG}(n,k))-10, χ({\rm KG}(n,k))\}$ where $n\geq 2k \geq 4$. Moreover, we show that $χ_s({\rm KG}(n,k))=2χ({\rm KG}(n,k))-2=2n-4k+2$ provided that $n \leq {8\over 3}k$. This gives a partial answer to a conjecture of [12]. Also, we conjecture that for any positive integers $n\geq 2k \geq 4$ we have $χ_s({\rm KG}(n,k))= 2χ({\rm KG}(n,k))-2$.

Uniform n-place functions on T\subseteq ds(α)
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper the Erdos-Rado theorem is generalized to the class of well founded trees. We define an equivalence relation on the class rs(infty)^{< aleph_0} (finite sequences of decreasing sequences of ordinals) with aleph_0 equivalence classes, and for n< omega a notion of n-end-uniformity for a colouring of rs(infty)^{< aleph_0} with mu colours. We then show that for every ordinal alpha, n< omega and cardinal mu there is an ordinal lambda so that for any colouring c of T=rs(lambda)^{< aleph_0} with mu colours, T contains S isomorphic to rs(alpha) so that c rest S^{< aleph_0} is n-end uniform. For c with domain T^n this is equivalent to finding S subseteq T isomorphic to rs(alpha) so that c upharpoonright S^{n} depends only on the equivalence class of the defined relation, so in particular T-> (rs(alpha))^n_{mu, aleph_0} . We also draw a conclusion on colourings of n-tuples from a scattered linear order.
