Stokes posets and serpent nests
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study two different objects attached to an arbitrary quadrangulation of a regular polygon. The first one is a poset, closely related to the Stokes polytopes introduced by Baryshnikov. The second one is a set of some paths configurations inside the quadrangulation, satisfying some specific constraints. These objects provide a generalisation of the existing combinatorics of cluster algebras and nonnesting partitions of type A.

Difference equations for graded characters from quantum cluster algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new set of $q$-difference operators acting as raising operators on a family of symmetric polynomials which are characters of graded tensor products of current algebra ${\mathfrak g}[u]$ KR-modules \cite{FL} for ${\mathfrak g}=A_r$. These operators are generalizations of the Kirillov-Noumi \cite{kinoum} Macdonald raising operators, in the dual $q$-Whittaker limit $t\to\infty$. They form a representation of the quantum $Q$-system of type $A$ \cite{qKR}. This system is a subalgebra of a quantum cluster algebra, and is also a discrete integrable system whose conserved quantities, analogous to the Casimirs of $U_q({\mathfrak sl}_{r+1})$, act as difference operators on the above family of symmetric polynomials. The characters in the special case of products of fundamental modules are class I $q$-Whittaker functions, or characters of level-1 Demazure modules or Weyl modules. The action of the conserved quantities on these characters gives the difference quantum Toda equations \cite{Etingof}. We obtain a generalization of the latter for arbitrary tensor products of KR-modules.

Cluster algebras of type D: pseudotriangulations approach
Published in Electron. J. Combin., vol. 22(4), #P4.44, 27 pp., 2015 • View Publication • BIB
We present a combinatorial model for cluster algebras of type $D_n$ in terms of centrally symmetric pseudotriangulations of a regular $2n$-gon with a small disk in the centre. This model provides convenient and uniform interpretations for clusters, cluster variables and their exchange relations, as well as for quivers and their mutations. We also present a new combinatorial interpretation of cluster variables in terms of perfect matchings of a graph after deleting two of its vertices. This interpretation differs from known interpretations in the literature. Its main feature, in contrast with other interpretations, is that for a fixed initial cluster seed, one or two graphs serve for the computation of all cluster variables. Finally, we discuss applications of our model to polytopal realizations of type $D$ associahedra and connections to subword complexes and $c$-cluster complexes.

Cluster Algebras, Invariant Theory, and Kronecker Coefficients I
Published • View Publication • BIB
We relate the $m$-truncated Kronecker products of symmetric functions to the semi-invariant rings of a family of quiver representations. We find cluster algebra structures for these semi-invariant rings when $m=2$. Each {\sf g}-vector cone ${\sf G}_{\Diamond_l}$ of these cluster algebras controls the $2$-truncated Kronecker products for all symmetric functions of degree no greater than $l$. As a consequence, each relevant Kronecker coefficient is the difference of the number of the lattice points inside two rational polytopes. We also give explicit description of all ${\sf G}_{\Diamond_l}$'s. As an application, we compute some invariant rings.

Cambrian frameworks for cluster algebras of affine type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial model for the exchange graph and g-vector fan associated to any acyclic exchange matrix B of affine type. More specifically, we construct a reflection framework for B in the sense of [N. Reading and D. E. Speyer, "Combinatorial frameworks for cluster algebras"] and establish good properties of this framework. The framework (and in particular the g-vector fan) is constructed by combining a copy of the Cambrian fan for B with an antipodal copy of the Cambrian fan for -B.

Maximal Green Sequences for Cluster Algebras Associated to the Orientable Surfaces of Genus n with Arbitrary Punctures
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that any triangulation of a marked surface produces a quiver. In this paper we will provide a triangulation for orientable surfaces of genus $n$ with an arbitrary number interior marked points (called punctures) whose corresponding quiver has a maximal green sequence.

Coxeter's frieze patterns at the crossroads of algebra, geometry and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
Frieze patterns of numbers, introduced in the early 70's by Coxeter, are currently attracting much interest due to connections with the recent theory of cluster algebras. The present paper aims to review the original work of Coxeter and the new developments around the notion of frieze, focusing on the representation theoretic, geometric and combinatorial approaches.

A step towards cluster superalgebras
We introduce a class of commutative superalgebras generalizing cluster algebras. A cluster superalgebra is defined by a hypergraph called an "extended quiver", and transformations called mutations. We prove the super analog of the "Laurent phenomenon", i.e., that all elements of a given cluster superalgebra are Laurent polynomials in the initial variables, and find an invariant presymplectic form. Examples of cluster superalgebras are provided by superanalogs of Coxeter's frieze patterns. We apply the Laurent phenomenon to construct a new integer sequence extending the Somos-$4$ sequence.

Y-meshes and generalized pentagram maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a rich family of generalizations of the pentagram map sharing the property that each generates an infinite configuration of points and lines with four points on each line. These systems all have a description as $Y$-mutations in a cluster algebra and hence establish new connections between cluster theory and projective geometry. Our framework incorporates many preexisting generalized pentagram maps due to M. Gekhtman, M. Shapiro, S. Tabachnikov, and A. Vainshtein and also B. Khesin and F. Soloviev. In several of these cases a reduction to cluster dynamics was not previously known.

Arrangements of equal minors in the positive Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss arrangements of equal minors of totally positive matrices. More precisely, we investigate the structure of equalities and inequalities between the minors. We show that arrangements of equal minors of largest value are in bijection with sorted sets, which earlier appeared in the context of alcoved polytopes and Gröbner bases. Maximal arrangements of this form correspond to simplices of the alcoved triangulation of the hypersimplex; and the number of such arrangements equals the Eulerian number. On the other hand, we prove in many cases that arrangements of equal minors of smallest value are exactly weakly separated sets. Weakly separated sets, originally introduced by Leclerc and Zelevinsky, are closely related to the positive Grassmannian and the associated cluster algebra. However, we also construct examples of arrangements of smallest minors which are not weakly separated using chain reactions of mutations of plabic graphs.

Maximal Green Sequences for Cluster Algebras Associated to the n-Torus
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a marked surface (S,M) we can add arcs to the surface to create a triangulation, T, of that surface. For each triangulation, T, we can associate a cluster algebra. In this paper we will consider the torus of genus n with two interior marked points (called punctures). We will construct a specific triangulation of this surface which yeilds a specific quiver. Then in the sense of work by Keller we will produce a maximal green sequence for this quiver.

Conway-Coxeter friezes and beyond: Polynomially weighted walks around dissected polygons and generalized frieze patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
Conway and Coxeter introduced frieze patterns in 1973 and classified them via triangulated polygons. The determinant of the matrix associated to a frieze table was computed explicitly by Broline, Crowe and Isaacs in 1974, a result generalized 2012 by Baur and Marsh in the context of cluster algebras of type A. Higher angulations of polygons and associated generalized frieze patterns were studied in a joint paper with Holm and Jørgensen. Here we take these results further; we allow arbitrary dissections and introduce polynomially weighted walks around such dissected polygons. The corresponding generalized frieze table satisfies a complementary symmetry condition; its determinant is a multisymmetric multivariate polynomial that is given explicitly. But even more, the frieze matrix may be transformed over a ring of Laurent polynomials to a nice diagonal form generalizing the Smith normal form result given in an earlier joint paper with Holm and Jørgensen. Considering the generalized polynomial frieze in this context it is also shown that the non-zero local determinants are monomials that are given explicitly, depending on the geometry of the dissected polygon.

Cluster Algebras and Semi-invariant Rings I. Triple Flags
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 115 (2017), no. 1, 1-32 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that each semi-invariant ring of the complete triple flag of length $n$ is an upper cluster algebra associated to an ice hive quiver. We find a rational polyhedral cone ${\sf G}_n$ such that the generic cluster character maps its lattice points onto a basis of the cluster algebra. As an application, we use the cluster algebra structure to find a special minimal set of generators for these semi-invariant rings when $n$ is small.

Toda Systems, Cluster Characters, and Spectral Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the Hamiltonians of the open relativistic Toda system are elements of the generic basis of a cluster algebra, and in particular are cluster characters of nonrigid representations of a quiver with potential. Using cluster coordinates defined via spectral networks, we identify the phase space of this system with the wild character variety related to the periodic nonrelativistic Toda system by the wild nonabelian Hodge correspondence. We show that this identification takes the relativistic Toda Hamiltonians to traces of holonomies around a simple closed curve. In particular, this provides nontrivial examples of cluster coordinates on $SL_n$-character varieties for $n > 2$ where canonical functions associated to simple closed curves can be computed in terms of quivers with potential, extending known results in the $SL_2$ case.

Canonical bases for cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In previous work, the first three authors conjectured that the ring of regular functions on a natural class of affine log Calabi-Yau varieties (those with maximal boundary) has a canonical vector space basis parameterized by the integral tropical points of the mirror. Further, the structure constants for the multiplication rule in this basis should be given by counting broken lines (certain combinatorial objects, morally the tropicalisations of holomorphic discs). Here we prove the conjecture in the case of cluster varieties, where the statement is a more precise form of the Fock-Goncharov dual basis conjecture. In particular, under suitable hypotheses, for each Y the partial compactification of an affine cluster variety U given by allowing some frozen variables to vanish, we obtain canonical bases for the ring of functions on Y extending to a basis for functions on U. Each choice of seed canonically identifies the parameterizing sets of these bases with integral points in a polyhedral cone. These results specialize to basis results of combinatorial representation theory. For example, by considering the open double Bruhat cell U in the basic affine space Y we obtain a canonical basis of each irreducible representation of SL_r, parameterized by a set which each choice of seed identifies with integral points of a lattice polytope. These bases and polytopes are all constructed essentially without representation theoretic considerations. Along the way, our methods prove a number of conjectures in cluster theory, including positivity of the Laurent phenomenon for cluster algebras of geometric type.
Artin Group Presentations Arising from Cluster Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2003, Fomin and Zelevinsky proved that finite type cluster algebras can be classified by Dynkin diagrams. Then in 2013, Barot and Marsh defined the presentation of a reflection group associated to a Dynkin diagram in terms of an edge-weighted, oriented graph, and proved that this group is invariant (up to isomorphism) under diagram mutations. In this paper, we extend Barot and Marsh's results to Artin group presentations, defining new generator relations and showing mutation-invariance for these presentations.

A Combinatorial Formula for Certain Elements of Upper Cluster Algebras
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 049, 24 pages • View Publication • BIB
We develop an elementary formula for certain non-trivial elements of upper cluster algebras. These elements have positive coefficients. We show that when the cluster algebra is acyclic these elements form a basis. Using this formula, we show that each non-acyclic skew-symmetric cluster algebra of rank 3 is properly contained in its upper cluster algebra.

Initial-seed recursions and dualities for d-vectors
Published in Pacific J. Math. 293 (2018) 179-206 • View Publication • BIB
We present an initial-seed-mutation formula for d-vectors of cluster variables in a cluster algebra. We also give two rephrasings of this recursion: one as a duality formula for d-vectors in the style of the g-vectors/c-vectors dualities of Nakanishi and Zelevinsky, and one as a formula expressing the highest powers in the Laurent expansion of a cluster variable in terms of the d-vectors of any cluster containing it. We prove that the initial-seed-mutation recursion holds in a varied collection of cluster algebras, but not in general. We conjecture further that the formula holds for source-sink moves on the initial seed in an arbitrary cluster algebra, and we prove this conjecture in the case of surfaces.

Coxeter groups, quiver mutations and geometric manifolds
Published in J. London Math. Soc. 94 (2016), 38-60 • View Publication • BIB
We construct finite volume hyperbolic manifolds with large symmetry groups. The construction makes use of the presentations of finite Coxeter groups provided by Barot and Marsh and involves mutations of quivers and diagrams defined in the theory of cluster algebras. We generalize our construction by assigning to every quiver or diagram of finite or affine type a CW-complex with a proper action of a finite (or affine) Coxeter group. These CW-complexes undergo mutations agreeing with mutations of quivers and diagrams. We also generalize the construction to quivers and diagrams originating from unpunctured surfaces and orbifolds.

T-Path Formula and Atomic Bases for Cluster Algebras of Type D
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 060, 46 pages • View Publication • BIB
We extend a T-path expansion formula for arcs on an unpunctured surface to the case of arcs on a once-punctured polygon and use this formula to give a combinatorial proof that cluster monomials form the atomic basis of a cluster algebra of type D.
