Braid group symmetries of Grassmannian cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define an action of the extended affine d-strand braid group on the open positroid stratum in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n), for d the greatest common divisor of k and n. The action is by quasi-automorphisms of the cluster structure on the Grassmannian, determining a homomorphism from the extended affine braid group to the cluster modular group. We also define a quasi-isomorphism between the Grassmannian Gr(k,rk) and the Fock-Goncharov configuration space of 2r-tuples of affine flags for SL(k). This identifies the cluster variables, clusters, and cluster modular groups, in these two cluster structures. Fomin and Pylyavskyy proposed a description of the cluster combinatorics for Gr(3,n) in terms of Kuperberg's basis of non-elliptic webs. As our main application, we prove many of their conjectures for Gr(3,9) and give a presentation for its cluster modular group. We establish similar results for Gr(4,8). These results rely on the fact that both of these Grassmannians have finite mutation type.

Cluster algebras and symmetrizable matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of quasi-Cartan companions defined by the c-vectors of acyclic skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras. In particular, we show that the diagram of any skew-symmetrizable matrix associated with an acyclic cluster algebra has an admissible cut of edges.

F-polynomial formula from continued fractions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For cluster algebras from surfaces, there is a known formula for cluster variables and F-polynomials in terms of the perfect matchings of snake graphs. If the cluster algebra has trivial coefficients, there is also a known formula for cluster variables in terms of continued fractions. In this paper, we extend this result to cluster algebras with principal coefficients by producing a formula for the F-polynomials in terms of continued fractions.

Weak Separation, Pure Domains and Cluster Distance
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.), 24(3):2093--2127, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
Following the proof of the purity conjecture for weakly separated collections, recent years have revealed a variety of wider examples of purity in different settings. In this paper we consider the collection $\mathcal A_{I,J}$ of sets that are weakly separated from two fixed sets $I$ and $J$. We show that all maximal by inclusion weakly separated collections $\mathcal W\subset\mathcal A_{I,J}$ are also maximal by size, provided that $I$ and $J$ are sufficiently "generic". We also give a simple formula for the cardinality of $\mathcal W$ in terms of $I$ and $J$. We apply our result to calculate the cluster distance and to give lower bounds on the mutation distance between cluster variables in the cluster algebra structure on the coordinate ring of the Grassmannian. Using a linear projection that relates weak separation to the octahedron recurrence, we also find the exact mutation distances and cluster distances for a family of cluster variables.

Cluster algebraic interpretation of infinite friezes
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 81 (2019), 22-57 • View Publication • BIB
Originally studied by Conway and Coxeter, friezes appeared in various recreational mathematics publications in the 1970s. More recently, in 2015, Baur, Parsons, and Tschabold constructed periodic infinite friezes and related them to matching numbers in the once-punctured disk and annulus. In this paper, we study such infinite friezes with an eye towards cluster algebras of type D and affine A, respectively. By examining infinite friezes with Laurent polynomial entries, we discover new symmetries and formulas relating the entries of this frieze to one another. Lastly, we also present a correspondence between Broline, Crowe and Isaacs's classical matching tuples and combinatorial interpretations of elements of cluster algebras from surfaces.

Properties of minimal mutation-infinite quivers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study properties of minimal mutation-infinite quivers. In particular we show that every minimal-mutation infinite quiver of at least rank 4 is Louise and has a maximal green sequence. It then follows that the cluster algebras generated by these quivers are locally acyclic and hence equal to their upper cluster algebra. We also study which quivers in a mutation-class have a maximal green sequence. For any rank 3 quiver there are at most 6 quivers in its mutation class that admit a maximal green sequence. We also show that for every rank 4 minimal mutation-infinite quiver there is a finite connected subgraph of the unlabelled exchange graph consisting of quivers that admit a maximal green sequence.

Green-to-Red Sequences for Positroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Le-diagrams are combinatorial objects that parametrize cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, called positroid cells, and each Le-diagram gives rise to a cluster algebra which is believed to be isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We study quivers arising from these diagrams and show that they can be constructed from the well-behaved quivers associated to Grassmannians by deleting and merging certain vertices. Then, we prove that quivers coming from arbitrary Le-diagrams, and more generally reduced plabic graphs, admit a particular sequence of mutations called a green-to-red sequence.

On toric degenerations of flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Following the historical track in pursuing $T$-equivariant flat toric degenerations of flag varieties and spherical varieties, we explain how powerful tools in algebraic geometry and representation theory, such as canonical bases, Newton-Okounkov bodies, PBW-filtrations and cluster algebras come to push the subject forward.

Towards a uniform subword complex description of acyclic finite type cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
It has been established in recent years how to approach acyclic cluster algebras of finite type using subword complexes. In this paper, we continue this study by describing the c- and g-vectors, and by providing a conjectured description of the Newton polytopes of the F-polynomials. In particular, we show that this conjectured description would imply that finite type cluster complexes are realized by the duals of the Minkowski sums of the Newton polytopes of either the F-polynomials, or of the cluster variables, respectively.

Cluster algebras and continued fractions
Published in Compositio Math. 154 (2018) 565-593 • View Publication • BIB
We establish a combinatorial realization of continued fractions as quotients of cardinalities of sets. These sets are sets of perfect matchings of certain graphs, the snake graphs, that appear naturally in the theory of cluster algebras. To a continued fraction $[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$, we associate a snake graph $\mathcal{G}[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$ such that the continued fraction is the quotient of the number of perfect matchings of $\mathcal{G}[a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n]$ and $\mathcal{G}[a_2,\ldots,a_n]$. We also show that snake graphs are in bijection with continued fractions. We then apply this connection between cluster algebras and continued fractions in two directions. First, we use results from snake graph calculus to obtain new identities for the continuants of continued fractions. Then, we apply the machinery of continued fractions to cluster algebras and obtain explicit direct formulas for quotients of elements of the cluster algebra as continued fractions of Laurent polynomials in the initial variables. Building on this formula, and using classical methods for infinite periodic continued fractions, we also study the asymptotic behavior of quotients of elements of the cluster algebra.

The Exchange Graphs of Weakly Separated Collections
Weakly separated collections arise in the cluster algebra derived from the Plücker coordinates on the nonnegative Grassmannian. Oh, Postnikov, and Speyer studied weakly separated collections over a general Grassmann necklace $\mathcal{I}$ and proved the connectivity of every exchange graph. Oh and Speyer later introduced a generalization of exchange graphs that we call $\mathcal{C}$-constant graphs. They characterized these graphs in the smallest two cases. We prove an isomorphism between exchange graphs and a certain class of $\mathcal{C}$-constant graphs. We use this to extend Oh and Speyer's characterization of these graphs to the smallest four cases, and we present a conjecture on a bound on the maximal order of these graphs. In addition, we fully characterize certain classes of these graphs in the special cases of cycles and trees.

Laurent phenomenon algebras arising from surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
It was shown by Fomin, Shapiro and Thurston that some cluster algebras arise from orientable surfaces. Subsequently, Dupont and Palesi extended this construction to non-orientable surfaces. We link this framework to Lam and Pylyavskyy's Laurent phenomenon algebras, showing that both orientable and non-orientable unpunctured marked surfaces have an associated LP-algebra.

Recovering the topology of surfaces from cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present an effective method for recovering the topology of a bordered oriented surface with marked points from its cluster algebra. The information is extracted from the maximal triangulations of the surface, those that have exchange quivers with maximal number of arrows in the mutation class. The method gives new proofs of the automorphism and isomorphism problems for the surface cluster algebras, as well as the uniqueness of the Fomin-Shapiro-Thurston block decompositions of the exchange quivers of the surface cluster algebras. The previous proofs of these results followed a different approach based on Gu's direct proof of the last result. The method also explains the exceptions to these results due to pathological problems with the maximal triangulations of several surfaces.

A cluster realization of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl_n})$ from quantum character varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct an injective algebra homomorphism of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$ into a quantum cluster algebra $\mathbf{L}_n$ associated to the moduli space of framed $PGL_{n+1}$-local systems on a marked punctured disk. We obtain a description of the coproduct of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$ in terms of the corresponding quantum cluster algebra associated to the marked twice punctured disk, and express the action of the $R$-matrix in terms of a mapping class group element corresponding to the half-Dehn twist rotating one puncture about the other. As a consequence, we realize the algebra automorphism of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})^{\otimes 2}$ given by conjugation by the $R$-matrix as an explicit sequence of cluster mutations, and derive a refined factorization of the $R$-matrix into quantum dilogarithms of cluster monomials.

Quantum Q systems: From cluster algebras to quantum current algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we recall our renormalized quantum Q-system associated with representations of the Lie algebra $A_r$, and show that it can be viewed as a quotient of the quantum current algebra $U_q({\mathfrak n}[u,u^{-1}])\subset U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak sl}_2)$ in the Drinfeld presentation. Moreover, we find the interpretation of the conserved quantities in terms of Cartan currents at level 0, and the rest of the current algebra, in a non-standard polarization in terms of generators in the quantum cluster algebra.

On Generalized Minors and Quiver Representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cluster algebra of any acyclic quiver can be realized as the coordinate ring of a subvariety of a Kac-Moody group -- the quiver is an orientation of its Dynkin diagram, defining a Coxeter element and thereby a double Bruhat cell. We use this realization to connect representations of the quiver with those of the group. We show that cluster variables of preprojective (resp. postinjective) quiver representations are realized by generalized minors of highest-weight (resp. lowest-weight) group representations, generalizing results of Yang-Zelevinsky in finite type. In type $A_n^{\!(1)}$ and finitely many other affine types, we show that cluster variables of regular quiver representations are realized by generalized minors of group representations that are neither highest- nor lowest-weight; we conjecture this holds more generally.

Cluster expansion formulas in type A
Published in Algebr. Represent Theory, Vol 22 (1) (2019) 1-19 • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to give analogs of the cluster expansion formula of Musiker and Schiffler for cluster algebras of type A with coefficients arising from boundary arcs of the corresponding triangulated polygon. Indeed, we give three cluster expansion formulas by perfect matchings of angles in triangulated polygon, by discrete subsets of arrows of the corresponding ice quiver and by minimal cuts of the corresponding quiver with potential.

Cohomology of cluster varieties. I. Locally acyclic case
Published in Alg. Number Th. 16 (2022) 179-230 • View Publication • BIB
We initiate a systematic study of the cohomology of cluster varieties. We introduce the Louise property for cluster algebras that holds for all acyclic cluster algebras, and for most cluster algebras arising from marked surfaces. For cluster varieties satisfying the Louise property and of full rank, we show that the cohomology satisfies the curious Lefschetz property of Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas, and that the mixed Hodge structure is split over the rationals. We give a complete description of the highest weight part of the mixed Hodge structure of these cluster varieties, and develop the notion of a standard differential form on a cluster variety. We show that the point counts of these cluster varieties over finite fields can be expressed in terms of Dirichlet characters. Under an additional integrality hypothesis, the point counts are shown to be polynomials in the order of the finite field.

New Combinatorial Formulas for Cluster Monomials of Type A Quivers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lots of research focuses on the combinatorics behind various bases of cluster algebras. This paper studies the natural basis of a type A cluster algebra, which consists of all cluster monomials. We introduce a new kind of combinatorial formulas for the cluster monomials in terms of the so-called globally compatible collections. We give bijective proofs of these formulas by comparing with the well-known combinatorial models of the T-paths and of the perfect matchings in a snake diagram. For cluster variables of a type A cluster algebra, we give a bijection that relates our new formula with the theta functions constructed by Gross, Hacking, Keel and Kontsevich.
