Translational tilings of the integers with long periods
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that A is a finite set of integers of diameter D. Suppose also that the set of integers B is such that A+B is a tiling of the integers, that is each integer is uniquely expressible as a+b, with a in A, b in B. It is well known that B must be a periodic set in this case. Here we study the relationship between the diameter D of A and the least period T of B. We show that T is at most C exp(C \sqrt D \log D \sqrt{\log\log D}) and that we can have T at least quadratic in D.

Quasirandom Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chung and Graham define quasirandom subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ to be those with any one of a large collection of equivalent random-like properties. We weaken their definition and call a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ $ε$-balanced if its discrepancy on each interval is bounded by $εn$. A quasirandom permutation, then, is one which maps each interval to a highly balanced set. In the spirit of previous studies of quasirandomness, we exhibit several random-like properties which are equivalent to this one, including the property of containing (approximately) the expected number of subsequences of each order-type. We provide a few applications of these results, present a construction for a family of strongly quasirandom permutations, and prove that this construction is essentially optimal, using a result of W. Schmidt on the discrepancy of sequences of real numbers.

Abelian ideals in a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra
Published in Inventiones mathematicae 156 (2004), 175-221 • View Publication • BIB
Let g be a complex simple Lie algebra and b a fixed Borel subalgebra of g. We shall describe the abelian ideals of b in a uniform way, that is, independent of the classification of complex simple Lie algebras.

Cumulants in noncommutative probability I. Noncommutative Exchangeability Systems
Published in Math. Z. 248 (2004), 67--100 • View Publication • BIB
Cumulants linearize convolution of measures. We use a formula of Good to define noncommutative cumulants in a very general setting. It turns out that the essential property needed is exchangeability of random variables. Roughly speaking the formula says that cumulants are moments of a certain ``discrete Fourier transform'' of a random variable. This provides a simple unified method to understand the known examples of cumulants, like classical, free cumulants and various q-cumulants.

Cumulants in Noncommutative Probability Theory III. Creation- and annihilation operators on Fock spaces
Published in Infin. Dimens. Anal. Quantum Probab. Relat. Top. 8 (2005), no. 3, 407-437 • View Publication • BIB
Fock space constructions give rise to natural exchangeable families and are thus well suited for cumulant calculations. In this paper we develop some general formulas and compute cumulants for generalized Toeplitz operators, notably for q-Fock spaces, previously considered by M. Anshelevich and A. Nica, and Fock spaces for characters of the infinite symmetric group, which where constructed by Bozejko and Guta. An expression for cumulants in terms of the cycle-cover polynomials of certain directed graphs is obtained in this case.

Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra and long positive roots
Published in Intern. Math.Res. Notices (2003), no.35., 1889-1913 • Search Publication
Let $\b$ be a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra $\g$ and let $\Ab$ denote the set of all Abelian ideals of $\b$. We consider $\Ab$ as poset with respect to inclusion, the zero ideal being the unique minimal element of $\Ab$. It was shown in my paper with G.Roehrle (Adv. Math. v.159 (2001)) that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the maximal Abelian ideals and the long simple roots of $\g$. But the very existence of it was demonstrated in a case-by-case fashion. Here a conceptual explanation for that empirical observation is given. The main results are: 1) there is a natural mapping $τ$ from the set of all nontrivial Abelian ideals to the set of long positive roots; 2) If $I$ is a maximal Abelian ideal, then $τ(I)$ is a long simple root. Restricting $τ$ to the set of maximal Abelian ideals yields the above-mentioned correspondence; 3) Each fibre of $τ$ is a poset in its own right, and we prove that this fibre has a unique maximal and a unique minimal element. 4) An explicit description of the minimal and the maximal ideal corresponding to a long root is given.

Z-measures on partitions and their scaling limits
Published in European J. Combin. 26 (2005), no. 6, 795--834 • View Publication • BIB
We study certain probability measures on partitions of n=1,2,..., originated in representation theory, and demonstrate their connections with random matrix theory and multivariate hypergeometric functions. Our measures depend on three parameters including an analog of the beta parameter in random matrix models. Under an appropriate limit transition as n goes to infinity, our measures converge to certain limit measures, which are of the same nature as one-dimensional log-gas with arbitrary beta>0. The first main result says that averages of products of ``characteristic polynomials'' with respect to the limit measures are given by the multivariate hypergeometric functions of type (2,0). The second main result is a computation of the limit correlation functions for the even values of beta.

Cohomology of symplectic reductions of generic coadjoint orbits
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 132 (2004), no. 10, 3069--3074 • View Publication • BIB
Let mathcal{O}_lambda be a generic coadjoint orbit of a compact semi-simple Lie group K. Weight varieties are the symplectic reductions of mathcal{O}_lambda by the maximal torus T in K. We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to compute the cohomology ring of these varieties. Our formula relies on a Schubert basis of the equivariant cohomology of \mathcal{O}_lambda and it makes explicit the dependence on λand a parameter in Lie(T)^*.

We prove a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex local system. This result is compared with other vanishing theorems, and used to study Milnor fibers of line arrangements, and hypersurface arrangements.

g-elements of matroid complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let K be the face ring of the independence complex of a matroid. We show that if T is a generic linear system of parameters, then K/T satisfies a weak form of the Hard Lefschetz Theorem. As a result, the first half of the h-vector of the complex satisfies inequalities similar to the g-theorem for simplicial polytopes.

Poisson-Kingman partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents some general formulas for random partitions of a finite set derived by Kingman's model of random sampling from an interval partition generated by subintervals whose lengths are the points of a Poisson point process. These lengths can be also interpreted as the jumps of a subordinator, that is an increasing process with stationary independent increments. Examples include the two-parameter family of Poisson-Dirichlet models derived from the Poisson process of jumps of a stable subordinator. Applications are made to the random partition generated by the lengths of excursions of a Brownian motion or Brownian bridge conditioned on its local time at zero.

The maximal spectral radius of a digraph with (m+1)^2 - s edges
Published in Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, vol 10 (2003), pp 179-189 • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the spectral radius of a digraph with k edges is \le \sqrt{k}, and that this inequality is strict except when k is a perfect square. For k=m^2 + \ell, \ell fixed, m large, Friedland showed that the optimal digraph is obtained from the complete digraph on m vertices by adding one extra vertex, and a corresponding loop, and then connecting it to the first \lfloor \ell/2\rfloor vertices by pairs of directed edges (this is for odd \ell, for even \ell we add one extra edge to the new vertex). Using a combinatorial reciprocity theorem by Gessel, and a classification by Backelin on the digraphs on s edges having a maximal number of walks of length two, we obtain the following result: for fixed 0< s \neq 4, k=(m+1)^2 - s, m large, the maximal spectral radius of a digraph with k edges is obtained by the digraph which is constructed from the complete digraph on m+1 vertices by removing the loop at the last vertex together with \lfloor s/2 \rfloor pairs of directed edges that connect to the last vertex (if s is even, remove an extra edge connecting to the last vertex).

Tiling transitive tournaments and their blow-ups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $TT_k$ denote the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. Let $TT(h,k)$ denote the graph obtained from $TT_k$ by replacing each vertex with an independent set of size $h \geq 1$. The following result is proved: Let $c_2=1/2$, $c_3=5/6$ and $c_k=1-2^{-k-\log k}$ for $k \geq 4$. For every $ε> 0$ there exists $N=N(ε,h,k)$ such that for every undirected graph $G$ with $n > N$ vertices and with $δ(G) \geq c_kn$, every orientation of $G$ contains vertex disjoint copies of $TT(h,k)$ that cover all but at most $εn$ vertices. In the cases $k=2$ and $k=3$ the result is asymptotically tight. For $k \geq 4$, $c_k$ cannot be improved to less than $1-2^{-0.5k(1+o(1))}$.

Families of trees decompose the random graph in any arbitrary way
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F=\{H_1,...,H_k\}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ with $m$ edges is called {\em totally $F$-decomposable} if for {\em every} linear combination of the form $α_1 e(H_1) + ... + α_k e(H_k) = m$ where each $α_i$ is a nonnegative integer, there is a coloring of the edges of $G$ with $α_1+...+α_k$ colors such that exactly $α_i$ color classes induce each a copy of $H_i$, for $i=1,...,k$. We prove that if $F$ is any fixed family of trees then $\log n/n$ is a sharp threshold function for the property that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is totally $F$-decomposable. In particular, if $H$ is a tree, then $\log n/n$ is a sharp threshold function for the property that $G(n,p)$ contains $\lfloor e(G)/e(H) \rfloor$ edge-disjoint copies of $H$.

Limits of Voronoi Diagrams
In this thesis we study sets of points in the plane and their Voronoi diagrams, in particular when the points coincide. We bring together two ways of studying point sets that have received a lot of attention in recent years: Voronoi diagrams and compactifications of configuration spaces. We study moving and colliding points and this enables us to introduce `limit Voronoi diagrams'. We define several compactifications by considering geometric properties of pairs and triples of points. In this way we are able to define a smooth, real version of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show how to define Voronoi diagrams on elements of these compactifications and describe the connection with the limit Voronoi diagrams.

A Limit Theorem for Shifted Schur Measures
Published in Duke Mathematical Journal 123 (2004), 171-208. • View Publication • BIB
To each partition $λ$ with distinct parts we assign the probability $Q_λ(x) P_λ(y)/Z$ where $Q_λ$ and $P_λ$ are the Schur $Q$-functions and $Z$ is a normalization constant. This measure, which we call the shifted Schur measure, is analogous to the much-studied Schur measure. For the specialization of the first $m$ coordinates of $x$ and the first $n$ coordinates of $y$ equal to $α$ ($0<α<1$) and the rest equal to zero, we derive a limit law for $λ_1$ as $m,n\ra\infty$ with $τ=m/n$ fixed. For the Schur measure the $α$-specialization limit law was derived by Johansson. Our main result implies that the two limit laws are identical.

Decomposition theorem for invertible substitutions on three-letter alphabet
Published • View Publication • BIB
We shall characterize the structure of invertible substitutions on three-letter alphabet. We show that any invertible substitution, after some cyclic operation, can be written as a finite product of permutations and Fibonacci's substitution. As a consequence, a matrix (of order 3 and with non-negative integral coefficients) is the matrix of an invertible substitution if and only if it is a finite product of non-negative elementary matrices.
