We describe a construction of the Tutte polynomial for both matroids and $q$-matroids based on an appropriate partition of the underlying support lattice into intervals that correspond to prime-free minors, which we call a Tutte partition. We show that such partitions in the matroid case include the class of partitions arising in Crapo's definition of the Tutte polynomial, while not representing a direct $q$-analogue of such partitions. We propose axioms of $q$-Tutte-Grothendiek invariance and show that this yields a $q$-analogue of Tutte-Grothendiek invariance. We establish the connection between the rank polynomial and the Tutte polynomial, showing that one can be obtained from the other by convolution.
On distinguishing digraphs by its quasisymmetric B-polynomial
The $B$-polynomial defined by J. Awan and O. Bernardi is a generalization of Tutte Polynomial to digraphs. In this paper, we solve an open question raised by J. Awan and O. Bernardi regarding the expansion of $B$-polynomial in elementary symmetric polynomials. We show that the quasisymmetric generalization of the $B$-polynomial distinguishes a class of oriented proper caterpillars and the class of oriented paths. We present a recurrence relation for the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial involving the deletion of a source or a sink. As a consequence, we prove that a class of digraph $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable if and only if the class $\mathcal{D}^{\vee}$ obtained by taking directed join of $K_1$ with each digraph in $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable, which concludes that the digraph analogue of Stanley's Tree conjecture holds for a large class of acyclic digraphs. We further study the symmetric properties of the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial and its relation with certain digraphs.

In this work, we introduce the harmonic generalization of the $m$-tuple weight enumerators of codes over finite Frobenius rings. A harmonic version of the MacWilliams-type identity for $m$-tuple weight enumerators of codes over finite Frobenius ring is also given. Moreover, we define the demi-matroid analogue of well-known polynomials from matroid theory, namely Tutte polynomials and coboundary polynomials, and associate them with a harmonic function. We also prove the Greene-type identity relating these polynomials to the harmonic $m$-tuple weight enumerators of codes over finite Frobenius rings. As an application of this Greene-type identity, we provide a simple combinatorial proof of the MacWilliams-type identity for harmonic $m$-tuple weight enumerators over finite Frobenius rings. Finally, we provide the structure of the relative invariant spaces containing the harmonic $m$-tuple weight enumerators of self-dual codes over finite fields.

Graph invariants are a useful tool in graph theory. Not only do they encode useful information about the graphs to which they are associated, but complete invariants can be used to distinguish between non-isomorphic graphs. Polynomial invariants for graphs such as the well-known Tutte polynomial have been studied for several years, and recently there has been interest to also define such invariants for phylogenetic networks, a special type of graph that arises in the area of evolutionary biology. Recently Liu gave a complete invariant for (phylogenetic) trees. However, the polynomial invariants defined thus far for phylogenetic networks that are not trees require vertex labels and either contain a large number of variables, or they have exponentially many terms in the number of reticulations. This can make it difficult to compute these polynomials and to use them to analyse unlabelled networks. In this paper, we shall show how to circumvent some of these difficulties for rooted cactuses and cactuses. As well as being important in other areas such as operations research, rooted cactuses contain some common classes of phylogenetic networks such phylogenetic trees and level-1 networks. More specifically, we define a polynomial $F$ that is a complete invariant for the class of rooted cactuses without vertices of indegree 1 and outdegree 1 that has 5 variables, and a polynomial $Q$ that is a complete invariant for the class of rooted cactuses that has 6 variables \vince{whose degree can be bounded linearly in terms of the size of the rooted cactus}. We also explain how to extend the $Q$ polynomial to define a complete invariant for leaf-labelled rooted cactuses as well as (unrooted) cactuses.
Activity from matroids to rooted trees and beyond
The interior and exterior activities of bases of a matroid are well-known notions that for instance permit one to define the Tutte polynomial. Recently, we have discovered correspondences between the regions of gainic hyperplane arrangements and coloredlabeled rooted trees. Here we define a general activity theory that applies in particular to no-broken circuit (NBC) sets and labeled colored trees. The special case of activity \textsf{0} was our motivating case. As a consequence, in a gainic hyperplane arrangement the number of bounded regions is equal to the number of the corresponding colored labeled rooted trees of activity \textsf{0}.
Randomized Approximation Schemes for the Tutte Polynomial and Random Clustering in Subdense and Superdense Graphs
Extending the work of Alon, Frieze abnd Welsh, we show that there are randomized polynomial time approximation schemes for computing the Tutte polynomial in subdense graphs with an minimal node degree of $Ω\left ( \frac{n}{\sqrt{\log n}}\right )$ . The same holds for the partition function $Z$ in the random cluster model with uniform edge probabilities and for the associated distribution $λ(A),\: A \subseteq E$ whenever the underlying graph $G=(V,E)$ is $c\cdot\frac{n}{\sqrt{\log (n)}}$-subdense. In the superdense case with node degrees $n-o(n)$, we show that the Tutte polynomial $T_G(x,y)$ is asymptotically equal to $Q=(x-1)(y-1)$. Moreover, we briefly discuss the problem of approximating $Z$ in the case of $(α, β)$-power law graphs.

We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

We use the geometry of the stellahedral toric variety to study matroids. We identify the valuative group of matroids with the cohomology ring of the stellahedral toric variety, and show that valuative, homological, and numerical equivalence relations for matroids coincide. We establish a new log-concavity result for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, answering a question of Wagner and Shapiro-Smirnov-Vaintrob on Postnikov-Shapiro algebras, and calculate the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of matroid Schubert cells. The central construction is the "augmented tautological classes of matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles on the stellahedral toric variety.

The Tutte polynomial is a well-studied invariant of matroids. The polymatroid Tutte polynomial $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,y)$, introduced by Bernardi et al., is an extension of the classical Tutte polynomial from matroids to polymatroids $P$. In this paper, we first prove that $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,t)$ and $\mathcal{J}_{P}(t,y)$ are interpolating for any fixed real number $t\geq 1$, and then we study the coefficients of high-order terms in $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,1)$ and $\mathcal{J}_{P}(1,y)$. These results generalize results on interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs.

Kochol (2021) gave a new expansion formula for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid using the notion of \emph{compatible sets}, and asked how this expansion relates to the internal-external activities formula. Here, we provide an answer, which is obtained as a special case of a generalized version of the expansion formula to Las Vergnas's trivariate Tutte polynomials of matroid perspectives. The same generalization to matroid perspectives and bijection with activities have been independently proven by Kochol (2022 and 2023) in parallel with this work, but using different methods. Kochol proves both results recursively using the contraction-deletion relations, whereas we give a more direct proof of the bijection and use that to deduce the compatible sets expansion formula from Las Vergnas's activities expansion.

In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of a graph satisfy an inequality. In this short article we show that the conjecture generalized to matroids holds for the large class of all split matroids by exploiting the structure of their lattice of cyclic flats. This class of matroids strictly contains all paving and copaving matroids.
Tutte polynomials for regular oriented matroids

The Tutte polynomial is a fundamental invariant of graphs and matroids. In this article, we define a generalization of the Tutte polynomial to oriented graphs and regular oriented matroids. To any regular oriented matroid $N$, we associate a polynomial invariant $A_N(q,y,z)$, which we call the A-polynomial. The A-polynomial has the following interesting properties among many others:
1. a specialization of $A_N$ gives the Tutte polynomial of the unoriented matroid underlying $N$,
2. when the oriented matroid $N$ corresponds to an unoriented matroid (that is, when the elements of the ground set come in pairs with opposite orientations), the $A$-polynomial is equivalent to the Tutte polynomial of this unoriented matroid (up to a change of variables),
3. the A-polynomial $A_N$ detects, among other things, whether $N$ is acyclic and whether $N$ is totally cyclic.
We explore various properties and specializations of the A-polynomial. We show that some of the known properties or the Tutte polynomial of matroids can be extended to the A-polynomial of regular oriented matroids. For instance, we show that a specialization of $A_N$ counts all the acyclic orientations obtained by reorienting some elements of $N$, according to the number of reoriented elements.
Matroid schemes and geometric posets
The intersection data of a hyperplane arrangement is described by a geometric lattice, or equivalently a simple matroid. There is a rich interplay between this combinatorial structure and the topology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we characterize the combinatorial structure underlying an abelian arrangement (such as a toric or elliptic arrangement) by defining a class of geometric posets and a generalization of matroids called matroid schemes. The intersection data of an abelian arrangement is encoded in a geometric poset, and we prove that a geometric poset is equivalent to a simple matroid scheme. We lay foundations for the theory of matroid schemes, discussing rank, flats, and independence. We also extend the definition of the Tutte polynomial to this setting and prove that it satisfies a deletion-contraction recurrence.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of the weighted (harmonic) chromatic polynomials of graphs and discuss some of its properties. We also present the notion of the weighted (harmonic) Tutte--Grothendieck polynomials of graphs and give a generalization of the recipe theorem between the harmonic Tutte--Grothendieck polynomials graphs and the harmonic Tutte polynomials of matroids. Moreover, we give some constructions of the weighted (harmonic) Tutte--Grothendieck invariants for graphs and the weighted (harmonic) Tutte invariants for matroids. Finally, we give a remark on the categorification of the harmonic chromatic polynomials of graphs and harmonic Tutte polynomials of matroids.

T. Kálmán (A version of Tutte's polynomial for hypergraphs, Adv. Math. 244 (2013) 823-873.) introduced the interior and exterior polynomials which are generalizations of the Tutte polynomial $T(x,y)$ on plane points $(1/x,1)$ and $(1,1/y)$ to hypergraphs. The two polynomials are defined under a fixed ordering of hyperedges, and are proved to be independent of the ordering using techniques of polytopes. In this paper, similar to the Tutte's original proof we provide a direct and elementary proof for the well-definedness of the interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs.
On coefficients of the interior and exterior polynomials
The interior polynomial and the exterior polynomial are generalizations of valuations on $(1/ξ,1)$ and $(1,1/η)$ of the Tutte polynomial $T_G(x,y)$ of graphs to hypergraphs, respectively. The pair of hypergraphs induced by a connected bipartite graph are abstract duals and are proved to have the same interior polynomial, but may have different exterior polynomials. The top of the HOMFLY polynomial of a special alternating link coincides with the interior polynomial of the pair of hypergraphs induced by the Seifert graph of the link. Let $G=(V\cup E, \varepsilon)$ be a connected bipartite graph. In this paper, we mainly study the coefficients of the interior and exterior polynomials. We prove that the interior polynomial of a connected bipartite graph is interpolating. We strengthen the known result on the degree of the interior polynomial for connected bipartite graphs with 2-vertex cuts in $V$ or $E$. We prove that interior polynomials for a family of balanced bipartite graphs are monic and the interior polynomial of any connected bipartite graph can be written as a linear combination of interior polynomials of connected balanced bipartite graphs. The exterior polynomial of a hypergraph is also proved to be interpolating. It is known that the coefficient of the linear term of the interior polynomial is the nullity of the bipartite graph, we obtain a `dual' result on the coefficient of the linear term of the exterior polynomial: if $G-e$ is connected for each $e\in E$, then the coefficient of the linear term of the exterior polynomial is $|V|-1$. Interior and exterior polynomials for some families of bipartite graphs are computed.
Short proof of a theorem of Brylawski on the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial

In this short note we show that a system $M=(E,r)$ with a ground set $E$ of size $m$ and (rank) function $r: 2^E\to \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ satisfying $r(S)\leq \min(r(E),|S|)$ for every set $S\subseteq E$, the Tutte polynomial $$T_M(x,y):=\sum_{S\subseteq E}(x-1)^{r(E)-r(S)}(y-1)^{|S|-r(S)},$$ written as $T_M(x,y)=\sum_{i,j}t_{ij}x^iy^j$, satisfies that for any integer $h \geq 0$, we have $$\sum_{i=0}^h\sum_{j=0}^{h-i}\binom{h-i}{j}(-1)^jt_{ij}=(-1)^{m-r}\binom{h-r}{h-m},$$ where $r=r(E)$, and we use the convention that when $h<m$, the binomial coefficient $\binom{h-r}{h-m}$ is interpreted as $0$. This generalizes a theorem of Brylawski on matroid rank functions and $h<m$, and a theorem of Gordon for $h\leq m$ with the same assumptions on the rank function. The proof presented here is significantly shorter than the previous ones. We only use the fact that the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ simplifies to $(x-1)^{r(E)}y^{|E|}$ along the hyperbola $(x-1)(y-1)=1$.

Let $T(G;X,Y)$ be the Tutte polynomial for graphs. We study the sequence $t_{a,b}(n) = T(K_n;a,b)$ where $a,b$ are non-negative integers, and show that for every $μ\in \N$ the sequence $t_{a,b}(n)$ is ultimately periodic modulo $μ$ provided $a \neq 1 \modμ$ and $b \neq 1 \modμ$. This result is related to a conjecture by A. Mani and R. Stones from 2016. The theorem is a consequence of a more general theorem which holds for a wide class of graph polynomials definable in Monadic Second Order Logic and some of its extensions, such as the the independence polynomial, the clique polynomial, etc. We also show similar results for the various substitution instances of the bivariate matching polynomial and the trivariate edge elimination polynomial $ξ(G;X,Y,Z)$ introduced by I. Averbouch, B. Godlin and the second author in 2008. All our results depend on the Specker-Blatter Theorem from 1981, which studies modular recurrence relations of combinatorial sequences which count the number of labeled graphs.

This paper revisits the notion of a spanning hypertree of a hypermap introduced by one of its authors and shows that it allows to shed new light on a very diverse set of recent results. The tour of a map along one of its spanning trees used by Bernardi may be generalized to hypermaps and we show that it is equivalent to a dual tour described by Cori and Mach\`ı. We give a bijection between the spanning hypertrees of the reciprocal of the plane graph with $2$ vertices and $n$ parallel edges and the meanders of order $n$ and a bijection of the same kind between semimeanders of order $n$ and spanning hypertrees of the reciprocal of a plane graph with a single vertex and $n/2$ nested edges. We introduce hyperdeletions and hypercontractions in a hypermap which allow to count the spanning hypertrees of a hypermap recursively, and create a link with the computation of the Tutte polynomial of a graph. Having a particular interest in hypermaps which are reciprocals of maps, we generalize the reduction map introduced by Franz and Earnshaw to enumerate meanders to a reduction map that allows the enumeration of the spanning hypertrees of such hypermaps.
