A piecewise flat Finsler metric on a triangulated surface $M$ is a metric whose restriction to any triangle is a flat triangle in some Minkowski space with straight edges. One of the main purposes of this work is to study the properties of geodesics on a piecewise flat Finsler surface, especially when it meets a vertex. Using the edge-crossing equation, we define two classes of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces, namely, Landsberg type and Berwald type. We deduce an explicit condition for a geodesic to be extendable at a vertex, and define the curvature which measures the \textit{amount} of such extensions. The dependence of the curvature on an incoming or outgoing tangent direction corresponds to the feature of flag curvature in Finsler geometry. When the piecewise flat Finsler surface is of Landsberg type, the curvature is only relevant to the vertex, and we prove a combinatoric Gauss-Bonnet formula which generalizes both the Gauss-Bonnet formulas for piecewise flat Riemannian manifolds and for smooth Landsberg surfaces.

Principal circle bundle over a PL polyhedron can be triangulated and thus obtains combinatorics. The triangulation is assembled from triangulated circle bundles over simplices. To every triangulated circle bundle over a simplex we associate a necklace (in combinatorial sense). We express rational local formulas for all powers of first Chern class in the terms of mathematical expectations of parities of the associated necklaces. This rational parity is a combinatorial isomorphism invariant of triangulated circle bundle over simplex, measuring mixing by triangulation of the circular graphs over vertices of the simplex. The goal of this note is to sketch the logic of deduction these formulas from Kontsevitch's cyclic invariant connection form on metric polygons.

Mogami introduced in 1995 a large class of triangulated 3-dimensional pseudomanifolds, henceforth called "Mogami pseudomanifolds". He proved an exponential bound for the size of this class in terms of the number of tetrahedra. The question of whether all 3-balls are Mogami has remained open since, a positive answer would imply a much-desired exponential upper bound for the total number of 3-balls (and 3-spheres) with N tetrahedra.
Here we provide a negative answer: many 3-balls are not Mogami. On the way to this result, we characterize the Mogami property in terms of nuclei, in the sense of Collet-Eckmann-Younan: "The only three-dimensional Mogami nucleus is the tetrahedron".

A decorated surface S is an oriented surface with punctures and a finite set of marked points on the boundary, such that each boundary component has a marked point. We introduce ideal bipartite graphs on S. Each of them is related to a group G of type A, and gives rise to cluster coordinate systems on certain spaces of G-local systems on S. These coordinate systems generalize the ones assigned to ideal triangulations of S. A bipartite graph on S gives rise to a quiver with a canonical potential. The latter determines a triangulated 3d CY category with a cluster collection of spherical objects. Given an ideal bipartite graph on S, we define an extension of the mapping class group of S which acts by symmetries of the category. There is a family of open CY 3-folds over the universal Hitchin base, whose intermediate Jacobians describe the Hitchin system. We conjecture that the 3d CY category with cluster collection is equivalent to a full subcategory of the Fukaya category of a generic threefold of the family, equipped with a cluster collection of special Lagrangian spheres. For SL(2) a substantial part of the story is already known thanks to Bridgeland, Keller, Labardini-Fragoso, Nagao, Smith, and others. We hope that ideal bipartite graphs provide special examples of the Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke spectral networks.

Given an arbitrary non-zero simplicial cycle and a generic vector coloring of its vertices, there is a way to produce a graded Poincare duality algebra associated with these data. The procedure relies on the theory of volume polynomials and multi-fans. This construction includes many important examples, such as cohomology of toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, and Gorenstein algebras of triangulated homology manifolds, introduced by Novik and Swartz. In all these examples the dimensions of graded components of such duality algebras do not depend on the vector coloring. It was conjectured that the same holds for any simplicial cycle. We disprove this conjecture by showing that the colors of singular points of the cycle may affect the dimensions. However, the colors of smooth points are irrelevant. By using bistellar moves we show that the number of different dimension vectors arising on a given 3-dimensional pseudomanifold with isolated singularities is a topological invariant. This invariant is trivial on manifolds, but nontrivial in general.

In this article, we introduce a fixed parameter tractable algorithm for computing the Turaev-Viro invariants TV(4,q), using the dimension of the first homology group of the manifold as parameter.
This is, to our knowledge, the first parameterised algorithm in computational 3-manifold topology using a topological parameter. The computation of TV(4,q) is known to be #P-hard in general; using a topological parameter provides an algorithm polynomial in the size of the input triangulation for the extremely large family of 3-manifolds with first homology group of bounded rank.
Our algorithm is easy to implement and running times are comparable with running times to compute integral homology groups for standard libraries of triangulated 3-manifolds. The invariants we can compute this way are powerful: in combination with integral homology and using standard data sets we are able to roughly double the pairs of 3-manifolds we can distinguish.
We hope this qualifies TV(4,q) to be added to the short list of standard properties (such as orientability, connectedness, Betti numbers, etc.) that can be computed ad-hoc when first investigating an unknown triangulation.

The aim of this paper is to give analogs of the cluster expansion formula of Musiker and Schiffler for cluster algebras of type A with coefficients arising from boundary arcs of the corresponding triangulated polygon. Indeed, we give three cluster expansion formulas by perfect matchings of angles in triangulated polygon, by discrete subsets of arrows of the corresponding ice quiver and by minimal cuts of the corresponding quiver with potential.
Proving Tucker's Lemma with a Volume Argument

Sperner's lemma is a statement about labeled triangulations of a simplex. McLennan and Tourky (2007) provided a novel proof of Sperner's Lemma by examining volumes of simplices in a triangulation under time-linear simplex-linear deformation. We adapt a similar argument to prove Tucker's Lemma on a triangulated cross-polytope $P$. The McLennan-Tourky technique does not directly apply because this deformation may distort the volume of $P$. We remedy this by inscribing $P$ in its dual polytope, triangulating it, and considering how the volumes of deformed simplices behave.

Let $Δ$ be a triangulated homology ball whose boundary complex is $\partialΔ$. A result of Hochster asserts that the canonical module of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $Δ$, $\mathbb F[Δ]$, is isomorphic to the Stanley--Reisner module of the pair $(Δ, \partialΔ)$, $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$. This result implies that an Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$ is (up to a shift in grading) isomorphic to the Matlis dual of the corresponding Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ]$. We establish a generalization of this duality to all triangulations of connected orientable homology manifolds with boundary. We also provide an explicit algebraic interpretation of the $h"$-numbers of Buchsbaum complexes and use it to prove the monotonicity of $h"$-numbers for pairs of Buchsbaum complexes as well as the unimodality of $h"$-vectors of barycentric subdivisions of Buchsbaum polyhedral complexes. We close with applications to the algebraic manifold $g$-conjecture.

Using the combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex $K$, we give various upper and lower bounds for the Lusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$. We describe families of simplicial complexes and combinatorial operations which allow for a systematic description of the LS category. In particular, we characterise the LS category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$ over triangulated $d$-manifolds $K$ for $d\leq 2$, as well as higher dimension spheres built up via connected sum, join, and vertex doubling operations. %This characterisation is given in terms of the combinatorics of $K$, the cup product length of $H^*(\zk)$, as well as a certain Massey products. We show that the LS category closely relates to vanishing of Massey products in $H^*(\zk)$ and through this connection we describe first structural properties of Massey products in moment-angel manifolds. Some of further applications include calculations of the LS category and the description of conditions for vanishing of Massey products for moment-angle manifolds over fullerenes, Pogorelov polytopes and $k$-neighbourly complexes, which double as important examples of hyperbolic manifolds.

For a field $\mathbb{F}$, the notion of $\mathbb{F}$-tightness of simplicial complexes was introduced by Kühnel. Kühnel and Lutz conjectured that any $\mathbb{F}$-tight triangulation of a closed manifold is the most economic of all possible triangulations of the manifold. The boundary of a triangle is the only $\mathbb{F}$-tight triangulation of a closed 1-manifold. A triangulation of a closed 2-manifold is $\mathbb{F}$-tight if and only if it is $\mathbb{F}$-orientable and neighbourly. In this paper we prove that a triangulation of a closed 3-manifold is $\mathbb{F}$-tight if and only if it is $\mathbb{F}$-orientable, neighbourly and stacked. In consequence, the Kühnel-Lutz conjecture is valid in dimension $\leq 3$.
Mutations of simple-minded systems in Calabi-Yau categories generated by a spherical object
In this article, we give a definition and a classification of 'higher' simple-minded systems in triangulated categories generated by spherical objects with negative Calabi-Yau dimension. We also study mutations of this class of objects and that of 'higher' Hom-configurations and Riedtmann configurations. This gives an explicit analogue of the nice mutation theory exhibited in cluster-tilting theory.
A construction principle for tight and minimal triangulations of manifolds

Tight triangulations are exotic, but highly regular objects in combinatorial topology. A triangulation is tight if all its piecewise linear embeddings into a Euclidean space are as convex as allowed by the topology of the underlying manifold. Tight triangulations are conjectured to be strongly minimal, and proven to be so for dimensions $\leq 3$. However, in spite of substantial theoretical results about such triangulations, there are precious few examples. In fact, apart from dimension two, we do not know if there are infinitely many of them in any given dimension.
In this paper, we present a computer-friendly combinatorial scheme to obtain tight triangulations, and present new examples in dimensions three, four and five. Furthermore, we describe a family of tight triangulated $d$-manifolds, with $2^{d-1} \lfloor d / 2 \rfloor ! \lfloor (d-1) / 2 \rfloor !$ isomorphically distinct members for each dimension $d \geq 2$. While we still do not know if there are infinitely many tight triangulations in a fixed dimension $d > 2$, this result shows that there are abundantly many.

We investigate a type of distance between triangulations on finite type surfaces where one moves between triangulations by performing simultaneous flips. We consider triangulations up to homeomorphism and our main results are upper bounds on distance between triangulations that only depend on the topology of the surface.
2-complexes with large 2-girth

The 2-girth of a 2-dimensional simplicial complex $X$ is the minimum size of a non-zero 2-cycle in $H_2(X, \mathbb{Z}/2)$. We consider the maximum possible girth of a complex with $n$ vertices and $m$ 2-faces. If $m = n^{2 + α}$ for $α< 1/2$, then we show that the 2-girth is at most $4 n^{2 - 2 α}$ and we prove the existence of complexes with 2-girth at least $c_{α, ε} n^{2 - 2 α- ε}$. On the other hand, if $α> 1/2$, the 2-girth is at most $C_α$. So there is a phase transition as $α$ passes 1/2.
Our results depend on a new upper bound for the number of combinatorial types of triangulated surfaces with $v$ vertices and $f$ faces.

A simple graph is $3$-rigid if its generic bar-joint frameworks in $R^3$ are infinitesimally rigid. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the minimal $3$-rigidity of a simple graph which is obtained from the $1$-skeleton of a triangulated torus by the deletion of edges interior to a triangulated disc.
Well-Formed Separator Sequences, with an Application to Hypergraph Drawing
Given a hypergraph $H$, the Planar Support problem asks whether there is a planar graph $G$ on the same vertex set as $H$ such that each hyperedge induces a connected subgraph of $G$. Planar Support is motivated by applications in graph drawing and data visualization. We show that Planar Support is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the number of hyperedges in the input hypergraph and the outerplanarity number of the sought planar graph. To this end, we develop novel structural results for $r$-outerplanar triangulated disks, showing that they admit sequences of separators with structural properties enabling data reduction. This allows us to obtain a problem kernel for Planar Support, thus showing its fixed-parameter tractability.
The generic rigidity of triangulated spheres with blocks and holes

A simple graph G=(V,E) is 3-rigid if its generic bar-joint frameworks in R3 are infinitesimally rigid. Block and hole graphs are derived from triangulated spheres by the removal of edges and the addition of minimally rigid subgraphs, known as blocks, in some of the resulting holes. Combinatorial characterisations of minimal $3$-rigidity are obtained for these graphs in the case of a single block and finitely many holes or a single hole and finitely many blocks. These results confirm a conjecture of Whiteley from 1988 and special cases of a stronger conjecture of Finbow-Singh and Whiteley from 2013.
Triangulating planar graphs while keeping the pathwidth small

Any simple planar graph can be triangulated, i.e., we can add edges to it, without adding multi-edges, such that the result is planar and all faces are triangles. In this paper, we study the problem of triangulating a planar graph without increasing the pathwidth by much.
We show that if a planar graph has pathwidth $k$, then we can triangulate it so that the resulting graph has pathwidth $O(k)$ (where the factors are 1, 8 and 16 for 3-connected, 2-connected and arbitrary graphs). With similar techniques, we also show that any outer-planar graph of pathwidth $k$ can be turned into a maximal outer-planar graph of pathwidth at most $4k+4$. The previously best known result here was $16k+15$.
Color or cover
If all but two vertices of a triangulated sphere have degrees divisible by $k$, then the exceptional vertices are not adjacent. This theorem is proved for $k=2$ with the help of the coloring monodromy. For $k = 3, 4, 5$ colorings by the vertices of platonic solids have to be used. With a coloring monodromy one can associate a branched cover. This generalizes to a space of germs between two triangulated surfaces. We also discuss relations with Belyi surfaces and with cone-metrics of constant curvature.
