Universal characters twisted by roots of unity
Published in Algebr. Comb. 6 (2023), no. 6, 1653-1676 • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Littlewood gives a factorisation for the Schur function at a set of variables "twisted" by a primitive $t$-th root of unity, characterised by the core and quotient of the indexing partition. While somewhat neglected, it has proved to be an important tool in the character theory of the symmetric group, the cyclic sieving phenomenon, plethysms of symmetric functions and more. Recently, similar factorisations for the characters of the groups $\mathrm{O}(2n,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$ were obtained by Ayyer and Kumari. We lift these results to the level of universal characters, which has the benefit of making the proofs simpler and the structure of the factorisations more transparent. Our approach also allows for universal character extensions of some factorisations of a different nature originally discovered by Ciucu and Krattenthaler, and generalised by Ayyer and Behrend.

Positivity of Sylow branching coefficients of symmetric groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we investigate the positivity of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups when $p = 3$. In particular, we complete the discussion begun by Giannelli and the author in arXiv:1712.02642 (J. Algebra) and developed in arXiv:1909.09446 (J. London Math. Soc.) concerning the case of odd primes.
Sym-Noetherianity for powers of GL-varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Much recent literature concerns finiteness properties of infinite-dimensional algebraic varieties equipped with an action of the infinite symmetric group, or of the infinite general linear group. In this paper, we study a common generalisation in which the product of both groups acts on infinite-dimensional spaces, and we show that these spaces are topologically Noetherian with respect to this action.

The one-sided cycle shuffles in the symmetric group algebra
Published in Shortened version in: Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 7 (2024) no. 2, pp. 275-326 • View Publication • BIB
We study a family of shuffling operators on the symmetric group $S_n$, which includes the top-to-random shuffle. The general shuffling scheme consists of removing one card at a time from the deck (according to some probability distribution) and re-inserting it at a (uniformly) random position further below. Rewritten in terms of the group algebra $\mathbb{R}[S_n]$, our shuffle corresponds to right multiplication by a linear combination of the elements \[t_i:=\text{cyc}_{i}+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1}+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1,i+2}+\cdots+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1,\ldots,n}\in \mathbb{R}[S_n]\] for all $i\in\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ (where $\text{cyc}_{j_1,j_2,\ldots,j_p}$ stands for a $p$-cycle). We compute the eigenvalues of these shuffling operators and of all their linear combinations. In particular, we show that the eigenvalues of right multiplication by a linear combination $λ_1t_1+λ_2t_2+\cdots+λ_nt_n$ are the numbers $λ_1m_{I,1}+λ_2m_{I,2}+\cdots+λ_nm_{I,n}$, where $I$ ranges over the subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n-1\}$ that contain no two consecutive integers; here $m_{I,i}$ are certain integers. We compute the multiplicities of these eigenvalues and show that if they are all distinct, the shuffling operator is diagonalizable. To this purpose, we show that the operators of right multiplication by $t_1,t_2,\ldots,t_n$ on $\mathbb{R}[S_n]$ are simultaneously triangularizable (via a combinatorially defined basis). The results stated here over $\mathbb{R}$ for convenience are actually stated and proved over an arbitrary commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$. We finish by describing a strong stationary time for the random-to-below shuffle, which is the shuffle in which the card that moves below is selected uniformly at random, and we give the waiting time for this event to happen.
Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. V. Acyclic orientations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1993, Savage, Squire, and West described an inductive construction for generating every acyclic orientation of a chordal graph exactly once, flipping one arc at a time. We provide two generalizations of this result. Firstly, we describe Gray codes for acyclic orientations of hypergraphs that satisfy a simple ordering condition, which generalizes the notion of perfect elimination order of graphs. This unifies the Savage-Squire-West construction with a recent algorithm for generating elimination trees of chordal graphs. Secondly, we consider quotients of lattices of acyclic orientations of chordal graphs, and we provide a Gray code for them, addressing a question raised by Pilaud. This also generalizes a recent algorithm for generating lattice congruences of the weak order on the symmetric group. Our algorithms are derived from the Hartung-Hoang-Mütze-Williams combinatorial generation framework, and they yield simple algorithms for computing Hamilton paths and cycles on large classes of polytopes, including chordal nestohedra and quotientopes. In particular, we derive an efficient implementation of the Savage-Squire-West construction. Along the way, we give an overview of old and recent results about the polyhedral and order-theoretic aspects of acyclic orientations of graphs and hypergraphs.

Positivity properties for spherical functions of maximal Young subgroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_k \times S_{n-k}$ be a maximal Young subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We introduce a basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ for the coset space $S_n/S_k \times S_{n-k}$ that is naturally parametrized by the set of standard Young tableaux with $n$ boxes, at most two rows, and at most $k$ boxes in the second row. The basis ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$ has positivity properties that resemble those of a root system, and there is a composition series of the coset space in which each term is spanned by the basis elements that it contains. We prove that the spherical functions of the associated Gelfand pair are nonnegative linear combinations of the ${\mathcal B}_{n,k}$.

Integer Representations of the Generalized Symmetric Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we construct a mixed-base number system over the generalized symmetric group $G(m,1,n)$, which is a complex reflection group with a root system of type $B_n^{(m)}$. We also establish one-to-one correspondence between all positive integers in the set $\{1,\cdots,m^nn!\}$ and the elements of $G(m,1,n)$ by constructing the subexceedant function in relation to this group. In addition, we provide a new enumeration system for $G(m,1,n)$ by defining the inversion statistic on $G(m,1,n)$. Finally, we prove that the \textit{flag-major index} is equi-distributed with this inversion statistic on $G(m,1,n)$. Therefore, the flag-major index is Mahonian on $G(m,1,n)$ with respect to the length function $L$.

Symmetric polynomials over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that two vectors with coordinates in the finite $q$-element field of characteristic $p$ belong to the same orbit under the natural action of the symmetric group if each of the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $p^k,2p^k,\dots,(q-1)p^k$, $k=0,1,2,\dots$ has the same value on them. This separating set of polynomial invariants for the natural permutation representation of the symmetric group is not far from being minimal when $q=p$ and the dimension is large compared to $p$. A relatively small separating set of multisymmetric polynomials over the field of $q$ elements is derived.

A Uniform Sampling Procedure for Abstract Triangulations of Surfaces
Published in This paper will be published in the proceedings of the SIAM Symposium on Algorithm Engineering and Experiments (ALENEX) 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We present a procedure to sample uniformly from the set of combinatorial isomorphism types of balanced triangulations of surfaces - also known as graph-encoded surfaces. For a given number $n$, the sample is a weighted set of graph-encoded surfaces with $2n$ triangles. The sampling procedure relies on connections between graph-encoded surfaces and permutations, and basic properties of the symmetric group. We implement our method and present a number of experimental findings based on the analysis of $138$ million runs of our sampling procedure, producing graph-encoded surfaces with up to $280$ triangles. Namely, we determine that, for $n$ fixed, the empirical mean genus $\bar{g}(n)$ of our sample is very close to $\bar{g}(n) = \frac{n-1}{2} - (16.98n -110.61)^{1/4}$. Moreover, we present experimental evidence that the associated genus distribution more and more concentrates on a vanishing portion of all possible genera as $n$ tends to infinity. Finally, we observe from our data that the mean number of non-trivial symmetries of a uniformly chosen graph encoding of a surface decays to zero at a rate super-exponential in $n$.

Kronecker coefficients from algebras of bi-partite ribbon graphs
Published in Eur. Phys. J. Spec. Top. (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Bi-partite ribbon graphs arise in organising the large $N$ expansion of correlators in random matrix models and in the enumeration of observables in random tensor models. There is an algebra $\mathcal{K}(n)$, with basis given by bi-partite ribbon graphs with $n$ edges, which is useful in the applications to matrix and tensor models. The algebra $\mathcal{K}(n)$ is closely related to symmetric group algebras and has a matrix-block decomposition related to Clebsch-Gordan multiplicities, also known as Kronecker coefficients, for symmetric group representations. Quantum mechanical models which use $\mathcal{K}(n)$ as Hilbert spaces can be used to give combinatorial algorithms for computing the Kronecker coefficients.
Sliding Block Puzzles with a Twist: On Segerman's 15+4 Puzzle
Published • View Publication • BIB
Segerman's 15+4 puzzle is a hinged version of the classic 15-puzzle, in which the tiles rotate as they slide around. In 1974, Wilson classified the groups of solutions to sliding block puzzles. We generalize Wilson's result to puzzles like the 15+4 puzzle, where the tiles can rotate, and the sets of solutions are subgroups of the generalized symmetric groups. Aside from two exceptional cases, we see that the group of solutions to such a puzzle is always either the entire generalized symmetric group or one of two special subgroups of index two.

On the proportion of elements of prime order in finite symmetric groups
We give a short proof for an explicit upper bound on the proportion of permutations of a given prime order $p$, acting on a finite set of given size $n$, which is sharp for certain $n$ and $p$. Namely, we prove that if $n\equiv k\pmod{p}$ with $0\leq k\leq p-1$, then this proportion is at most $(p\cdot k!)^{-1}$ with equality if and only if $p\leq n<2n$.

Conjectures on the reduced Kronecker coefficients
We formulate a series of conjectures on the stable tensor product of irreducible representations of symmetric groups, which are closely related to the reduced Kronecker coefficients. These conjectures are certain generalizations of Okounkov's conjecture on the log-concavity of the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and the Schur log-concavity theorem of Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy. We prove our conjectures in some special cases and discuss some implications of these conjectures.

The sequence reconstruction problem for permutations with the Hamming distance
Published • View Publication • BIB
V. Levenshtein first proposed the sequence reconstruction problem in 2001. This problem studies the model where the same sequence from some set is transmitted over multiple channels, and the decoder receives the different outputs. Assume that the transmitted sequence is at distance $d$ from some code and there are at most $r$ errors in every channel. Then the sequence reconstruction problem is to find the minimum number of channels required to recover exactly the transmitted sequence that has to be greater than the maximum intersection between two metric balls of radius $r$, where the distance between their centers is at least $d$. In this paper, we study the sequence reconstruction problem of permutations under the Hamming distance. In this model we define a Cayley graph over the symmetric group, study its properties and find the exact value of the largest intersection of its two metric balls for $d=2r$. Moreover, we give a lower bound on the largest intersection of two metric balls for $d=2r-1$.

Asymptotics for real monotone double Hurwitz numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent years, monotone double Hurwitz numbers were introduced as a naturally combinatorial modification of double Hurwitz numbers. Monotone double Hurwitz numbers share many structural properties with their classical counterparts, such as piecewise polynomaility, while the quantitative properties of these two numbers are quite different. We consider real analogues of monotone double Hurwitz numbers and study the asymptotics for these real analogues. The key ingredient is an interpretation of real tropical covers with arbitrary splittings as factorizations in the symmetric group which generalizes the result from Guay-Paquet, Markwig, and Rau (Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN, 2016(1):258-293, 2016). By using the above interpretation, we consider three types of real analogues of monotone double Hurwitz numbers: real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to simple splittings, relative to arbitrary splittings and real mixed double Hurwitz numbers. Under certain conditions, we find lower bounds for these real analogues, and obtain logarithmic asymptotics for real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to arbitrary splittings and real mixed double Hurwitz numbers. In particular, under given conditions real mixed double Hurwitz numbers are logarithmically equivalent to complex double Hurwitz numbers. We construct a family of real tropical covers and use them to show that real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to simple splittings are logarithmically equivalent to monotone double Hurwitz numbers with specific conditions. This is consistent with the logarithmic equivalence of real double Hurwitz numbers and complex double Hurwitz numbers.

Bijection between trees in Stanley character formula and factorizations of a cycle
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 31 (1) (2024), #P1.23 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley and Féray gave a formula for the irreducible character of the symmetric group related to a multi-rectangular Young diagram. This formula shows that the character is a polynomial in the multi-rectangular coordinates and gives an explicit combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients in terms of counting certain decorated maps (i.e., graphs drawn on surfaces). In the current paper we concentrate on the coefficients of the top-degree monomials in the Stanley character polynomial, which corresponds to counting certain decorated plane trees. We give an explicit bijection between such trees and minimal factorizations of a cycle.

Twisted Hurwitz numbers: Tropical and polynomial structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hurwitz numbers count covers of curves satisfying fixed ramification data. Via monodromy representation, this counting problem can be transformed to a problem of counting factorizations in the symmetric group. This and other beautiful connections make Hurwitz numbers a longstanding active research topic. In recent work Chapuy and Dolęga, a new enumerative invariant called b-Hurwitz number was introduced, which enumerates non-orientable branched coverings. For b=1, we obtain twisted Hurwitz numbers which were linked to surgery theory in work of Burman and Fesler and admit a representation as factorisations in the symmetric group. In this paper, we derive a tropical interperetation of twisted Hurwitz numbers in terms of tropical covers and study their polynomial structure.

Equivalence classes of dessins d'enfants with two vertices
Let $N$ be a positive integer. For any positive integer $L\leq N$ and any positive divisor $r$ of $N$, we enumerate the equivalence classes of dessins d'enfants with $N$ edges, $L$ faces and two vertices whose automorphism groups are cyclic of order $r$. Further, for any non-negative integer $h$, we enumerate the equivalence classes of dessins with $N$ edges, $h$ faces of degree $2$ with $h\leq N$, and two vertices, whose automorphism groups are cyclic of order $r$. Our arguments are essentially based upon a natural one-to-one correspondence of the equivalence classes of all dessins with $N$ edges to the equivalence classes of all pairs of permutations with components generating transitive subgroups of the symmetric group of degree $N$.

Transitivity in finite general linear groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the notion of a transitive subgroup of a permutation group $G$ extends naturally to subsets of $G$. We consider subsets of the general linear group $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ acting transitively on flag-like structures, which are common generalisations of $t$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and bases of $t$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. We give structural characterisations of transitive subsets of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ using the character theory of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ and interprete such subsets as designs in the conjugacy class association scheme of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$. In particular we generalise a theorem of Perin on subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ acting transitively on $t$-dimensional subspaces. We survey transitive subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$, showing that there is no subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ with $1<t<n$ acting transitively on $t$-dimensional subspaces unless it contains $\operatorname{SL}(n,q)$ or is one of two exceptional groups. On the other hand, for all fixed $t$, we show that there exist nontrivial subsets of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ that are transitive on linearly independent $t$-tuples of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, which also shows the existence of nontrivial subsets of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ that are transitive on more general flag-like structures. We establish connections with orthogonal polynomials, namely the Al-Salam-Carlitz polynomials, and generalise a result by Rudvalis and Shinoda on the distribution of the number of fixed points of the elements in $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$. Many of our results can be interpreted as $q$-analogs of corresponding results for the symmetric group.

Multiple Partition Structures and Harmonic Functions on Branching Graphs
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 153 (2024), Paper No.102617,49 pp • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study multiple partition structures which are sequences of probability measures on families of Young diagrams subjected to a consistency condition. The multiple partition structures are generalizations of Kingman's partition structures, and are motivated by a problem of population genetics. They are related to harmonic functions and coherent systems of probability measures on a certain branching graph. The vertices of this graph are multiple Young diagrams (or multiple partitions), and the edges depend on the Jack parameter. Our main result establishes a bijective correspondence between the set of harmonic functions on the graph and probability measures on the generalized Thoma set. The correspondence is determined by a canonical integral representation of harmonic functions. As a consequence we obtain a representation theorem for multiple partition structures. We give an example of a multiple partition structure which is expected to be relevant for a model of population genetics for the genetic variation of a sample of gametes from a large population. Namely, we construct a probability measure on the wreath product of a finite group with the symmetric group. The constructed probability measure defines a multiple partition structure which is a generalization of the Ewens partition structure studied by Kingman. We show that this multiple partition structure can be represented in terms of a multiple analogue of the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution called the multiple Poisson-Dirichlet distribution in the paper.
