The Euler characteristic, $q$-matroids, and a Möbius function

We first give two new proofs of an old result that the reduced Euler characteristic of a matroid complex is equal to the Möbius number of the lattice of cycles of the matroid up to the sign. The purpose has been to find a model to establish an analogous result for the case of $q$-matroids and we find a relation between the Euler characteristic of the simplicial chain complex associated to a $q$-matroid complex and the lattice of $q$-cycles of the $q$-matroid. We use this formula to find the complete homology over $\mathbb{Z}$ of this shellable simplicial complex. We give a characterization of nonzero Euler characteristic for such order complexes. Finally, based on these results we remark why singular homology of a $q$-matroid equipped with order topology may not be effective to describe the $q$-cycles unlike the classical case of matroids.
Random complexes with free involution
We introduce a new model for random simplicial complexes which with high probability generates a complex that has a simply-connected double cover. Hence we develop a model for random simplicial complexes with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. We establish results about the typical asymptotic topology of these complexes. As a consequence we give bounds for the dimension $d$ such that $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant maps from the double cover to $\mathbb{R}^d$ have zeros with high probability, thus establishing a random Borsuk--Ulam theorem. We apply this to derive a structural result for pairs of non-adjacent cliques in Erdős--Rényi random graphs.

We use simplicial complexes to model simple games as well as weighted voting games where certain coalitions are considered impossible. Topological characterizations of various ideas from simple games are provided, as are the expressions for Banzhaf and Shapley-Shubik power indices for weighted games. We calculate the indices in several examples of weighted voting games with unfeasible coalitions, including the U.S. Electoral College and the Parliament of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
On Equivariant flag $f$-vectors for balanced relative simplicial complexes
We study the equivariant flag $f$-vector and equivariant flag $h$-vector of a balanced relative simplicial complex with respect to a group action. When the complex satisfies Serre's condition $(S_{\ell}),$ we show that the equivariant flag $h$-vector, the equivariant $h$-vector, and the equivariant $f$-vector satisfy several inequalities.
We apply these results to the study of $P$-partitions of double posets, and weak colorings of mixed graphs.

Consider a random geometric 2-dimensional simplicial complex $X$ sampled as follows: first, sample $n$ vectors $\boldsymbol{u_1},\ldots,\boldsymbol{u_n}$ uniformly at random on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$; then, for each triple $i,j,k \in [n]$, add $\{i,j,k\}$ and all of its subsets to $X$ if and only if $\langle{\boldsymbol{u_i},\boldsymbol{u_j}}\rangle \ge τ, \langle{\boldsymbol{u_i},\boldsymbol{u_k}}\rangle \ge τ$, and $\langle \boldsymbol{u_j}, \boldsymbol{u_k}\rangle \ge τ$. We prove that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists a choice of $d = Θ(\log n)$ and $τ= τ(\varepsilon,d)$ so that with high probability, $X$ is a high-dimensional expander of average degree $n^\varepsilon$ in which each $1$-link has spectral gap bounded away from $\frac{1}{2}$.
To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a natural distribution over $2$-dimensional expanders of arbitrarily small polynomial average degree and spectral link expansion better than $\frac{1}{2}$. All previously known constructions are algebraic. This distribution also furnishes an example of simplicial complexes for which the trickle-down theorem is nearly tight.
En route, we prove general bounds on the spectral expansion of random induced subgraphs of arbitrary vertex transitive graphs, which may be of independent interest. For example, one consequence is an almost-sharp bound on the second eigenvalue of random $n$-vertex geometric graphs on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, which was previously unknown for most $n,d$ pairs.

Given an ascending chain $(I_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ of $\Sym$-invariant squarefree monomial ideals, we study the corresponding chain of Alexander duals $(I_n^\vee)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. Using a novel combinatorial tool, which we call \emph{avoidance up to symmetry}, we provide an explicit description of the minimal generating set up to symmetry in terms of the original generators. Combining this result with methods from discrete geometry, this enables us to show that the number of orbit generators of $I_n^\vee$ is given by a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$. The same is true for the number of orbit generators of minimal degree, this degree being a linear function in $n$ eventually. The former result implies that the number of $\Sym$-orbits of primary components of $I_n$ grows polynomially in $n$ for large $n$. As another application, we show that, for each $i\geq 0$, the number of $i$-dimensional faces of the associated Stanley-Reisner complexes of $I_n$ is also given by a polynomial in $n$ for large $n$.

Inspired by work of Fröberg (1990), and Eagon and Reiner (1998), we define the \emph{total $k$-cut complex} of a graph $G$ to be the simplicial complex whose facets are the complements of independent sets of size $k$ in $G$. We study the homotopy types and combinatorial properties of total cut complexes for various families of graphs, including chordal graphs, cycles, bipartite graphs, the prism $K_n \times K_2$, and grid graphs, using techniques from algebraic topology and discrete Morse theory.
Exceptional sequences in semidistributive lattices and the poset topology of wide subcategories

Let $Λ$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $K$. We describe how Buan and Marsh's $τ$-exceptional sequences can be used to give a "brick labeling" of a certain poset of wide subcategories of finitely-generated $Λ$-modules. When $Λ$ is representation-directed, we prove that there exists a total order on the set of bricks which makes this into an EL-labeling. Motivated by the connection between classical exceptional sequences and noncrossing partitions, we then turn our attention towards the study of (well-separated) completely semidistributive lattices. Such lattices come equipped with a bijection between their completely join-irreducible and completely meet-irreducible elements, known as rowmotion or simply the "$κ$-map". Generalizing known results for finite semidistributive lattices, we show that the $κ$-map determines exactly when a set of completely join-irreducible elements forms a "canonical join representation". A consequence is that the corresponding "canonical join complex" is a flag simplicial complex, as has been shown for finite semidistributive lattices and lattices of torsion classes of finite-dimensional algebras. Finally, in the case of lattices of torsion classes of finite-dimensional algebras, we demonstrate how Jasso's $τ$-tilting reduction can be encoded using the $κ$-map. We use this to define $κ^d$-exceptional sequences for finite semidistributive lattices. These are distinguished sequences of completely join-irreducible elements which we prove specialize to $τ$-exceptional sequences in the algebra setting.
Shotgun Assembly of Linial-Meshulam Model

In a recent paper [6], J. Gaudio and E. Mossel studied the shotgun assembly of the Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal G(n,p_n)$ with $p_n=n^{-α}$, and showed that the graph is reconstructable form its $1$-neighbourhoods if $0<α< 1/3$ and not reconstructable from its $1$-neighbourhoods if $1/2 <α<1$. In this article, we generalise the notion of reconstruction of graphs to the reconstruction of simplicial complexes. We show that the Linial-Meshulam model $Y_{d}(n,p_n)$ on $n$ vertices with $p_n=n^{-α}$ is reconstructable from its $1$-neighbourhoods when $0< α< 1/3$ and is not reconstructable form its $1$-neighbourhoods when $1/2 < α< 1$.

Given a polytopal complex $X$, we examine the topological complement of its $k$-skeleton. We construct a long exact sequence relating the homologies of the skeleton complements and links of faces in $X$, and using this long exact sequence, we obtain characterisations of Cohen-Macaulay and Leray complexes, stacked balls, and neighbourly spheres in terms of their skeleton complements. We also apply these results to CAT(0) cubical complexes, and find new similarities between such a complex and an associated simplicial complex, the crossing complex.

Let $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, a graded algebra $S=R/I$ satisfies $N_{k,p}$ if $I$ is generated in degree $k$, and the graded minimal resolution is linear the first $p$ steps, and the $k$-index of $S$ is the largest $p$ such that $S$ satisfies $N_{k,p}$. Eisenbud and Goto have shown that for any graded ring $R/I$, then $R/I_{\geq k}$, where $I_{\geq k}=I\cap M^k$ and $M=(x_1,\dots,x_n)$, has a $k$-linear resolution (satisfies $N_{k,p}$ for all $p$) if $k\gg0$. For a squarefree monomial ideal $I$, we are here interested in the ideal $I_k$ which is the squarefree part of $I_{\geq k}$. The ideal $I$ is, via Stanley-Reisner correspondence, associated to a simplicial complex $Δ_I$. In this case, all Betti numbers of $R/I_k$ for $k>\min\{\text{deg}(u)\mid u\in I\}$, which of course is a much finer invariant than the index, can be determined from the Betti diagram of $R/I$ and the $f$-vector of $Δ_I$. We compare our results with the corresponding statements for $I_{\ge k}$. (Here $I$ is an arbitrary graded ideal.) In this case we show that the Betti numbers of $R/I_{\ge k}$ can be determined from the Betti numbers of $R/I$ and the Hilbert series of $R/I_{\ge k}$.
The homology of random simplicial complexes in the multi-parameter upper model

We study random simplicial complexes in the multi-parameter upper model. In this model simplices of various dimensions are taken randomly and independently, and our random simplicial complex $Y$ is then taken to be the minimal simplicial complex containing this collection of simplices.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the homology of $Y$ as the number of vertices goes to $\infty$. We observe the following phenomenon asymptotically almost surely. The given probabilities with which the simplices are taken determine a range of dimensions $\ell \leq k \leq \ell'$ with $\ell' \leq 2\ell +1$, outside of which the homology of $Y$ vanishes. Within this range, the homologies diminish drastically from dimension to dimension. In particular, the homology in the critical dimension $\ell$ is significantly the largest.
Perfect Matching Complexes of Honeycomb Graphs

The {\em perfect matching complex} of a graph is the simplicial complex on the edge set of the graph with facets corresponding to perfect matchings of the graph. This paper studies the perfect matching complexes, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{k \times m\times n})$, of honeycomb graphs. For $k = 1$, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{1\times m\times n})$ is contractible unless $n\ge m=2$, in which case it is homotopy equivalent to the $(n-1)$-sphere. Also, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{2\times 2\times 2})$ is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of two 3-spheres. The proofs use discrete Morse theory.
Triangulations of simplicial complexes and theta polynomials

An enumerative theory of triangulations of simplicial complexes has been developed by Stanley. A key role in his theory is played by the local $h$-polynomial of a triangulation of a simplex. This paper develops a parallel theory, in which the role of the local $h$-polynomial is played by a simpler invariant, namely the theta polynomial. This allows one to deduce unimodality and gamma-positivity properties of $h$-polynomials of triangulations of simplicial complexes from corresponding properties of theta polynomials, which are studied here in some detail. To mention one concrete application, the $h$-polynomial of the antiprism triangulation of any simplicial homology sphere is shown to be gamma-positive, thus confirming Gal's conjecture in a new special case.
Persistent Homology, Matroids and Cobordisms
The homological information about a filtered simplicial complex over the poset of positive real numbers is often presented by a barcode which depicts the evolution of the associated Betti numbers. However, there is a wonderfully complex combinatorics associated with the homology classes of a filtered complex, and one can do more than just counting them over the index poset. Here, we show that this combinatorial information can be encoded by filtered matroids, or even better, by rooted forests. We also show that these rooted forests can be realized as cobordisms.
On basic double G-links of squarefree monomial ideals

Nagel and Römer introduced the class of weakly vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, which include matroid, shifted, and Gorenstein complexes as well as vertex decomposable complexes. They proved that the Stanley-Reisner ideal of every weakly vertex decomposable simplicial complex is Gorenstein linked to an ideal of indeterminates via a sequence of basic double G-links. In this paper, we explore basic double G-links between squarefree monomial ideals beyond the weakly vertex decomposable setting.
Our first contribution is a structural result about certain basic double G-links which involve an edge ideal. Specifically, suppose $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of a graph $G$. When $I(G)$ is a basic double G-link of a monomial ideal $B$ on an arbitrary homogeneous ideal $A$, we give a generating set for $B$ in terms of $G$ and show that this basic double G-link must be of degree $1$. Our second focus is on examples from the literature of simplicial complexes known to be Cohen-Macaulay but not weakly vertex decomposable. We show that these examples are not basic double links of any other squarefree monomial ideals.

We introduce two simplicial complexes, the noncrossing matching complex and the noncrossing bipartite complex. Both complexes are intimately related to the bubble lattice introduced in our earlier article "Bubble Lattices I: Structure" (arXiv:2202.02874). We study these complexes from both an enumerative and a geometric point of view. In particular, we prove that these complexes are shellable and give explicit formulas for certain refined face numbers. Lastly, we conjecture an intriguing connection of these refined face numbers to the so-called M-triangle of the shuffle lattice.
Minimal resolutions of lattice ideals

A canonical minimal free resolution of an arbitrary co-artinian lattice ideal over the polynomial ring is constructed over any field whose characteristic is 0 or any but finitely many positive primes. The differential has a closed-form combinatorial description as a sum over lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of weights that come from sequences of faces in simplicial complexes indexed by lattice points. Over a field of any characteristic, a non-canonical but simpler resolution is constructed by selecting choices of higher-dimensional analogues of spanning trees along lattice paths. These constructions generalize sylvan resolutions for monomial ideals by lifting them equivariantly to lattice modules.
Simplex links in determinantal hypertrees

We deduce a structurally inductive description of the determinantal probability measure associated with Kalai's celebrated enumeration result for higher--dimensional spanning trees of the $n-1$--simplex. As a consequence, we derive the marginal distributions of the simplex links in such random trees. Along the way, we also characterize the higher--dimensional spanning trees of every other simplicial cone in terms of the higher--dimensional rooted forests of the underlying simplicial complex. We also apply these new results to random topology, the spectral analysis of random graphs, and the theory of high dimensional expanders. One particularly interesting corollary of these results is that the fundamental group of a union of $o(\log n)$ determinantal 2--trees has Kazhdan's property (T) with high probability.
An Improved Trickle-Down Theorem for Partite Complexes
We prove a strengthening of the trickle down theorem for partite complexes. Given a $(d+1)$-partite $d$-dimensional simplicial complex, we show that if "on average" the links of faces of co-dimension 2 are $\frac{1-δ}{d}$-(one-sided) spectral expanders, then the link of any face of co-dimension $k$ is an $O(\frac{1-δ}{kδ})$-(one-sided) spectral expander, for all $3\leq k\leq d+1$. For an application, using our theorem as a black-box, we show that links of faces of co-dimension $k$ in recent constructions of bounded degree high dimensional expanders have spectral expansion at most $O(1/k)$ fraction of the spectral expansion of the links of the worst faces of co-dimension $2$.
