On Erdős Chains in the Plane
Let $P$ be a finite point set in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with the set of distance $n$-chains defined as $$ Δ_n(P)=\{(|p_1-p_2|,|p_2-p_3|,\ldots,|p_n-p_{n+1}|):p_i \in P\}.$$ We show that for $2\leq n=O_{|P|}(1)$ we have $$|Δ_n(P)|\gtrsim \frac{|P|^{n}}{\log^{\frac{13}{2}(n-1)}|P|}.$$ Our argument uses the energy construction of Elekes and a general version of Rudnev's rich-line bound implicit in Rudnev's recent hinge paper which allows one to iterate efficiently on highly intersecting nested subsets of Guth-Katz lines. Let $G$ is a simple connected graph on $m=O(1)$ vertices with $m\geq 2$. Define the graph-distance set $Δ_G(P)$ as $$ Δ_G(P) = \{ (|p_{i}-p_{j}|)_{\{i,j\}\in E(G)} : p_i,p_j \in P\}.$$ Combining with results of Guth and Katz and Rudnev with the above, if $G$ has a Hamiltonian path we have $$ |Δ_G(P)| \gtrsim \frac{|P|^{m-1}}{\text{polylog}|P|}. $$ \end{abstract}

The diameter of the uniform spanning tree of dense graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the diameter of a uniformly drawn spanning tree of a simple connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimal degree linear in $n$ is typically of order $\sqrt{n}$. A byproduct of our proof, which is of independent interest, is that on such graphs the Cheeger constant and the spectral gap are comparable.
Radio number of Hamming graphs of diameter 3
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $G$ a simple, connected graph, a vertex labeling $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$ is called a $\textit{radio labeling of}$ $G$ if it satisfies $|f(u)-f(v)|\geq \operatorname{diam}(G) + 1 - d(u,v)$ for all distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$. The $\textit{radio number}$ of $G$ is the minimal span over all radio labelings of $G$. If a bijective radio labeling onto $\{1,2,...,|V(G)|\}$ exists, $G$ is called a $\textit{radio graceful graph}$. We determine the radio number of all diameter $3$ Hamming graphs and show that an infinite subset of them is radio graceful.

A proof of a conjecture on the distance spectral radius and maximum transmission of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph, and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. Suppose that $D_{\max}(G)$ and $λ_1(G)$ are the maximum row sum and the spectral radius of $D(G)$, respectively. In this paper, we give a lower bound for $D_{\max}(G)-λ_1(G)$, and characterize the extremal graphs attaining the bound. As a corollary, we solve a conjecture posed by Liu, Shu and Xue.

On the $A_α$-spectra of some join graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple, connected graph and let $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of $G$. If $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of the vertex degrees of $G$, then for every real $α\in [0,1]$, the matrix $A_α(G)$ is defined as $$A_α(G) = αD(G) + (1- α) A(G).$$ The eigenvalues of the matrix $A_α(G)$ form the $A_α$-spectrum of $G$. Let $G_1 \dot{\vee} G_2$, $G_1 \underline{\vee} G_2$, $G_1 \langle \textrm{v} \rangle G_2$ and $G_1 \langle \textrm{e} \rangle G_2$ denote the subdivision-vertex join, subdivision-edge join, $R$-vertex join and $R$-edge join of two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, respectively. In this paper, we compute the $A_α$-spectra of $G_1 \dot{\vee} G_2$, $G_1 \underline{\vee} G_2$, $G_1 \langle \textrm{v} \rangle G_2$ and $G_1 \langle \textrm{e} \rangle G_2$ for a regular graph $G_1$ and an arbitrary graph $G_2$ in terms of their $A_α$-eigenvalues. As an application of these results, we construct infinitely many pairs of $A_α$-cospectral graphs.

Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two simple connected graphs. The invariant \textit{coronal} of graph is used in order to determine the $α$-eigenvalues of four different types of graph equations that are $G_1 \circ G_2, G_1\lozenge G_1$ and the other two`s are $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 \circleddash G_2$ which are obtained using the $R$-graph of $G_1$. As an application we construct infinitely many pairs of non-isomorphic $α$-Isospectral graph.
Homological invariants of Cameron--Walker graphs

Let $G$ be a finite simple connected graph on $[n]$ and $R = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. The edge ideal of $G$ is the ideal $I(G)$ of $R$ which is generated by those monomials $x_ix_j$ for which $\{i, j\}$ is an edge of $G$. In the present paper, the possible tuples $(n, {\rm depth} (R/I(G)), {\rm reg} (R/I(G)), \dim R/I(G), {\rm deg} \ h(R/I(G)))$, where ${\rm deg} \ h(R/I(G))$ is the degree of the $h$-polynomial of $R/I(G)$, arising from Cameron--Walker graphs on $[n]$ will be completely determined.

Cops and an Insightful Robber
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 295 (2021) 112-119 • View Publication • BIB
The 'Cheating Robot' version of Cops and Robbers is played on a finite, simple, connected graph. The players move in the same time period. However, before moving, the robot observes to which vertices the cops are moving and it is fast enough to complete its move in the time period. The cops also know that the robot will use this information. More cops are required to capture a robot than to capture a robber. Indeed, the minimum degree is a lower bound on the number of cops required to capture a robot. Only on a tree is one cop guaranteed to capture a robot, although two cops are sufficient to capture both a robber and a robot on outerplanar graphs. In graphs where retracts are involved, we show how cop strategies against a robber can be modified to capture a robot. This approach gives exact numbers for hypercubes, and $k$-dimensional grids in general.
On $α$-adjacency energy of graphs and Zagreb index

Let $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix and $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the vertex degrees of a simple connected graph $G$. Nikiforov defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ of the convex combinations of $D(G)$ and $A(G)$ as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, for $0\leq α\leq 1$. If $ ρ_{1}\geq ρ_{2}\geq \dots \geq ρ_{n}$ are the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ (which we call $α$-adjacency eigenvalues of $G$), the $ α$-adjacency energy of $G$ is defined as $E^{A_α}(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left|ρ_i-\frac{2αm}{n}\right|$, where $n$ is the order and $m$ is the size of $G$. We obtain the upper and lower bounds for $E^{A_α}(G) $ in terms of order $n$, size $m$ and Zagreb index $Zg(G)$ associated to the structure of $G$. Further, we characterize the extremal graphs attaining these bounds.

Distance matrix correlation spectrum of graphs
Let $G$ be a simple, connected graph, $\mathcal{D}(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$, and $Tr(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$. The distance Laplacian matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ are defined by $\mathcal{L}(G) = Tr(G)-\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(G) = Tr(G)+\mathcal{D}(G)$, respectively. The eigenvalues of $\mathcal{D}(G)$, $\mathcal{L}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(G)$ is called the $\mathcal{D}-$spectrum, $\mathcal{L}-$spectrum and $\mathcal{Q}-$spectrum, respectively. The generalized distance matrix of $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{D}_α(G)=αTr(G)+(1-α)\mathcal{D}(G),~0\leqα\leq1$, and the generalized distance spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{D}_α(G)$. In this paper, we give a complete description of the $\mathcal{D}-$spectrum, $\mathcal{L}-$spectrum and $\mathcal{Q}-$spectrum of some graphs obtained by operations. In addition, we present some new upper and lower bounds on the generalized distance spectral radius of $G$ and of its line graph $L(G)$, based on other graph-theoretic parameters, and characterize the extremal graphs. Finally, we study the generalized distance spectrum of some composite graphs.

A Spectral Approach to the Shortest Path Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple, connected graph. One is often interested in a short path between two vertices $u,v$. We propose a spectral algorithm: construct the function $φ:V \rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$ $$ φ= \arg\min_{f:V \rightarrow \mathbb{R} \atop f(u) = 0, f \not\equiv 0} \frac{\sum_{(w_1, w_2) \in E}{(f(w_1)-f(w_2))^2}}{\sum_{w \in V}{f(w)^2}}.$$ $φ$ can also be understood as the smallest eigenvector of the Laplacian Matrix $L=D-A$ after the $u-$th row and column have been removed. We start in the point $v$ and construct a path from $v$ to $u$: at each step, we move to the neighbor for which $φ$ is the smallest. This algorithm provably terminates and results in a short path from $v$ to $u$, often the shortest. The efficiency of this method is due to a discrete analogue of a phenomenon in Partial Differential Equations that is not well understood. We prove optimality for trees and discuss a number of open questions.
Proof of the Core Conjecture of Hilton and Zhao
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$. We call $G$ \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor |V(G)|/2\rfloor$. The \emph{core} of $G$, denoted $G_Δ$, is the subgraph of $G$ induced by its vertices of degree $Δ$. A classic result of Vizing shows that $χ'(G)$, the chromatic index of $G$, is either $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. It is NP-complete to determine the chromatic index for a general graph. However, if $G$ is overfull then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$. Hilton and Zhao in 1996 conjectured that if $G$ is a simple connected graph with $Δ\ge 3$ and $Δ(G_Δ)\le 2$, then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ if and only if $G$ is overfull or $G=P^*$, where $P^*$ is obtained from the Petersen graph by deleting a vertex. This conjecture, if true, implies an easy approach for calculating $χ'(G)$ for graphs $G$ satisfying the conditions. The progress on the conjecture has been slow: it was only confirmed for $Δ=3,4$, respectively, in 2003 and 2017. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for all $Δ\ge 4$.

Maximum Zagreb Indices Among All p-Quasi k-Cyclic Graphs
A simple connected graph G is called a p-quasi k-cyclic graph, if there exists a subset S of vertices such that |S|=p, G-S is k-cyclic and there is no a subset S` of V(G) such that |S`|<|S| and G-S` is k-cyclic. The aim of this paper is to characterize graph with maximum values of Zagreb indices among all p-quasi k-cyclic graph of order k>=3.

On spectral spread of generalized distance matrix of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a simple connected graph $G$, let $D(G)$, $Tr(G)$, $D^{L}(G)$ and $D^{Q}(G)$, respectively be the distance matrix, the diagonal matrix of the vertex transmissions, distance Laplacian matrix and the distance signless Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$. The convex linear combinations $D_α(G)$ of $Tr(G)$ and $D(G)$ is defined as $D_α(G)=αTr(G)+(1-α)D(G)$, $0\leq α\leq 1$. As $D_{0}(G)=D(G), ~~~ 2D_{\frac{1}{2}}(G)=D^{Q}(G), ~~~ D_{1}(G)=Tr(G)$ and $D_α(G)-D_β(G)=(α-β)D^{L}(G)$, this matrix reduces to merging the distance spectral, distance Laplacian spectral and distance signless Laplacian spectral theories. Let $\partial_{1}(G)\geq \partial_{2}(G)\geq \dots \geq \partial_{n}(G)$ be the eigenvalues of $D_α(G)$ and let $D_αS(G)=\partial_{1}(G)-\partial_{n}(G)$ be the generalized distance spectral spread of the graph $G$. In this paper, we obtain some bounds for the generalized distance spectral spread $D_α(G)$. We also obtain relation between the generalized distance spectral spread $D_α(G)$ and the distance spectral spread $S_{D}(G)$. Further, we obtain the lower bounds for $D_αS(G)$ of bipartite graphs involving different graph parameters and we characterize the extremal graphs for some cases. We also obtain lower bounds for $D_αS(G)$ in terms of clique number and independence number of the graph $G$ and characterize the extremal graphs for some cases.
Trees whose even-degree vertices induce a path are antimagic
Published in Discuss. Math. Graph T. 42 (2022) 959-966 • View Publication • BIB
An antimagic labeling a connected graph $G$ is a bijection from the set of edges $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\dots,|E(G)|\}$ such that all vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where the vertex sum at vertex $v$ is the sum of the labels assigned to edges incident to $v$. A graph is called antimagic if it has an antimagic labeling. In 1990, Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every simple connected graph other than $K_2$ is antimagic; however, the conjecture remains open, even for trees. In this note we prove that trees whose vertices of even degree induce a path are antimagic, extending a result given by Liang, Wong, and Zhu [Discrete Math. 331 (2014) 9--14].

Hamiltonian chromatic number of block graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications, 21(3), 353-369, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$. A hamiltonian coloring $c$ of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors (non-negative integers) to the vertices of $G$ such that $D(u, v)$ + $|c(u) - c(v)|$ $\geq$ $n - 1$ for every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, where $D(u, v)$ denotes the detour distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ which is the length of the longest path between $u$ and $v$. The value \emph{hc(c)} of a hamiltonian coloring $c$ is the maximum color assigned to a vertex of $G$. The hamiltonian chromatic number, denoted by $hc(G)$, is min\{$hc(c)$\} taken over all hamiltonian coloring $c$ of $G$. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition to achieve a lower bound for the hamiltonian chromatic number of block graphs given in [Theorem 1,On Hamiltonian Colorings of Block graphs, In: Kaykobad, M., Petrechi, R., (eds.) WALCOM: Algorithms and Computation, LNCS: 9627, 28-39, 2016]. We present an algorithm for optimal hamiltonian coloring of a special class of block graphs, namely $SDB(p/2)$ block graphs. We characterize level-wise regular block graphs and extended star of blocks achieving this lower bound.

A characterization of distance matrices of weighted cubic graphs and Peterson graphs
Given a positive-weighted simple connected graph with $m$ vertices, labelled by the numbers $1,\ldots,m$, we can construct an $m \times m$ matrix whose entry $(i,j)$, for any $i,j\in\{1,\dots,m\}$, is the minimal weight of a path between $i$ and $j$, where the weight of a path is the sum of the weights of its edges. Such a matrix is called the distance matrix of the weighted graph. There is wide literature about distance matrices of weighted graphs. In this paper we characterize distance matrices of positive-weighted $n$-hypercube graphs. Moreover we show that a connected bipartite $n$-regular graph with order $2^n$ is not necessarily the $n$-hypercube graph. Finally we give a characterization of distance matrices of positive-weighted Petersen graphs.

Caterpillars are Antimagic
Published in Mediterr. J. Math. (2021) 18:39 • View Publication • BIB
An antimagic labeling of a graph $G$ is an injection from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\dots,|E(G)|\}$ such that all vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where the vertex sum at vertex $u$ is the sum of the labels assigned to edges incident to $u$. A graph is called antimagic when it has an antimagic labeling. Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every simple connected graph other than $K_2$ is antimagic and the conjecture remains open even for trees. Here we prove that caterpillars are antimagic by means of an $O(n \log n)$ algorithm.
Short note on Randić energy
In this paper, we consider the Randić energy $RE$ of simple connected graphs. We provide upper bounds for $RE$ in terms of the number of vertices and the nullity of the graph. We present families of graphs that satisfy the Conjecture proposed by Gutman, Furtula and Bozkurt \cite{Gutman1} about the maximal RE. For example, we show that starlikes of odd order satisfy the conjecture.
