Multiset and Mixed Metric Dimension for Starphene and Zigzag-Edge Coronoid
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph. A vertex $a$ is said to recognize (resolve) two different elements $b_{1}$ and $b_{2}$ from $V(Γ)\cup E(Γ)$ if $d(a, b_{1})\neq d(a, b_{2}\}$. A subset of distinct ordered vertices $U_{M}\subseteq V(Γ)$ is said to be a mixed metric generator for $Γ$ if each pair of distinct elements from $V\cup E$ are recognized by some element of $U_{M}$. The mixed metric generator with a minimum number of elements is called a mixed metric basis of $Γ$. Then, the cardinality of this mixed metric basis for $Γ$ is called the mixed metric dimension of $Γ$, denoted by $mdim(Γ)$. The concept of studying chemical structures using graph theory terminologies is both appealing and practical. It enables researchers to more precisely and easily examines various chemical topologies and networks. In this paper, we consider two well known chemical structures; starphene $SP_{a,b,c}$ and six-sided hollow coronoid $HC_{a,b,c}$ and respectively compute their multiset dimension and mixed metric dimension.

A chain theorem for sequentially $3$-rank-connected graphs with respect to vertex-minors
Published in European J. Combin., 113:103761, October 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Tutte (1961) proved the chain theorem for simple $3$-connected graphs with respect to minors, which states that every simple $3$-connected graph $G$ has a simple $3$-connected minor with one edge fewer than $G$, unless $G$ is a wheel graph. Bouchet (1987) proved an analog for prime graphs with respect to vertex-minors. We present a chain theorem for higher connectivity with respect to vertex-minors, showing that every sequentially $3$-rank-connected graph $G$ has a sequentially $3$-rank-connected vertex-minor with one vertex fewer than $G$, unless $|V(G)|\leq 12$.

The biharmonic index of connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and $d_{B}^2(u,v)$ be the biharmonic distance between two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The biharmonic index $BH(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $$BH(G)=\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{u\in V(G)}\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)}d_{B}^2(u,v)=n\sum\limits_{i=2}^{n}\frac{1}{λ_i^2(G)},$$ where $λ_i(G)$ is the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of $G$ with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we provide the mathematical relationships between the biharmonic index and some classic topological indices: the first Zagreb index, the forgotten topological index and the Kirchhoff index. In addition, the extremal value on the biharmonic index for trees and firefly graphs of fixed order are given. Finally, some graph operations on the biharmonic index are presented.

RNA Number of Some Parity Signed Generalized Petersen Graphs
A signed graph $Σ=(G,σ)$ is said to be parity signed if there exists a bijection $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{1,2,...,|V(G)|\}$ such that $σ(uv)=+$ if and only if $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ are of same parity, where $uv$ is an edge of $G$. The rna number of a graph $G$, denoted $σ^{-}(G)$, is the minimum number of negative edges among all possible parity signed graphs over $G$. The rna number is also equal to the minimum cut size that has nearly equal sides. In this paper, for generalized Petersen graph $P(n,k)$, we prove that $3 \leq σ^{-}(P(n,k)) \leq n$ and these bounds are sharp. The exact value of $σ^{-}(P(n,k))$ is determined for $k=1,2$. Some famous generalized Petersen graphs namely, Petersen graph $P(5,2)$, Durer graph $P(6,2)$, Mobius-Kantor graph $P(8,3)$, Dodecahedron $P(10,2)$, Desargues graph $P(10,3)$ and Nauru graph $P(12,5)$ are also treated. We show that the minimum order of a $(4n-1)$-regular graph having rna number one is bounded above by $12n-2$. The sharpness of this upper bound is also shown for $n=1$. We also show that the minimum order of a $(4n+1)$-regular graph having rna number one is $8n+6$. Finally, for any simple connected graph of order $n$, we propose an $O(2^n + n^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor})$ time algorithm for computing its rna number.

Even factors in edge-chromatic-critical graphs with a small number of divalent vertices
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 38, 104 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
A finite simple connected graph $G$ with maximum degree $k$ is $k$-critical if it has chromatic index $χ'(G)=k+1$ and $χ'(G-e)=k$ for every edge $e\in E(G)$. Bej and the first author raised the question whether every $k$-critical graph has an even factor. We prove that every $k$-critical graph with at most $2k-6$ vertices of degree 2 has an even factor.

On the distance spectrum of minimal cages and associated distance biregular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $(k,g)$-cage is a $k$-regular simple graph of girth $g$ with minimum possible number of vertices. In this paper, $(k,g)$-cages which are Moore graphs are referred as minimal $(k,g)$-cages. A simple connected graph is called distance regular(DR) if all its vertices have the same intersection array. A bipartite graph is called distance biregular(DBR) if all the vertices of the same partite set admit the same intersection array. It is known that minimal $(k,g)$-cages are DR graphs and their subdivisions are DBR graphs. In this paper, for minimal $(k,g)$-cages we give a formula for distance spectral radius in terms of $k$ and $g$, and also determine polynomials of degree $[\frac{g}{2}]$, which is the diameter of the graph. This polynomial gives all distance eigenvalues when the variable is substituted by adjacency eigenvalues. We show that a minimal $(k,g)$-cage of diameter $d$ has $d+1$ distinct distance eigenvalues, and this partially answers a problem posed in [5]. We prove that every DBR graph is a $2$-partitioned transmission regular graph and then give a formula for its distance spectral radius. By this formula we obtain the distance spectral radius of subdivision of minimal $(k,g)$-cages. Finally we determine the full distance spectrum of subdivision of some minimal $(k,g)$-cages.

The Terwilliger algebra of the halved cube
Let $D\geq 3$ denote an integer. For any $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ let $w(x)$ denote the Hamming weight of $x$. Let $X$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb F_2^D$ consisting of all $x\in \mathbb F_2^D$ with even $w(x)$. The $D$-dimensional halved cube $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ is a finite simple connected graph with vertex set $X$ and $x,y\in X$ are adjacent if and only if $w(x-y)=2$. Fix a vertex $x\in X$. The Terwilliger algebra $\mathcal T=\mathcal T(x)$ of $\frac{1}{2}H(D,2)$ with respect to $x$ is the subalgebra of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by the adjacency matrix $A$ and the dual adjacency matrix $A^*=A^*(x)$ where $A^*$ is a diagonal matrix with $$ A^*_{yy}=D-2w(x-y) \qquad \hbox{for all $y\in X$}. $$ In this paper we decompose the standard $\mathcal T$-module into a direct sum of irreducible $\mathcal T$-modules.

Unbounded Mixed Resolvability of Web Graph and Prism Related Graph
Let $\mathbb{E}(H)$ and $\mathbb{V}(H)$ denote the edge set and the vertex set of the simple connected graph $H$, respectively. The mixed metric dimension of the graph $H$ is the graph invariant, which is the mixture of two important graph parameters, the edge metric dimension and the metric dimension. In this article, we compute the mixed metric dimension for the two families of the plane graphs viz., the Web graph $\mathbb{W}_{n}$ and the Prism allied graph $\mathbb{D}_{n}^{t}$. We show that the mixed metric dimension is non-constant unbounded for these two families of the plane graph. Moreover, for the Web graph $\mathbb{W}_{n}$ and the Prism allied graph $\mathbb{D}_{n}^{t}$, we unveil that the mixed metric basis set $M_{G}^{m}$ is independent.
The Core Conjecture of Hilton and Zhao II: a Proof
A simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ is overfull if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor |V(G)|/2\rfloor$. The core of $G$, denoted $G_Δ$, is the subgraph of $G$ induced by its vertices of degree $Δ$. Clearly, the chromatic index of $G$ equals $Δ+1$ if $G$ is overfull. Conversely, Hilton and Zhao in 1996 conjectured that if $G$ is a simple connected graph with $Δ\ge 3$ and $Δ(G_Δ)\le 2$, then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ implies that $G$ is overfull or $G=P^*$, where $P^*$ is obtained from the Petersen graph by deleting a vertex. Cariolaro and Cariolaro settled the base case $Δ=3$ in 2003, and Cranston and Rabern proved the next case $Δ=4$ in 2019. In this paper, we give a proof of this conjecture for all $Δ\ge 4$.

Pseudo-multifan and Lollipop

A simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ is \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor |V(G)|/2\rfloor$. The \emph{core} of $G$, denoted $G_Δ$, is the subgraph of $G$ induced by its vertices of degree $Δ$. Clearly, the chromatic index of $G$ equals $Δ+1$ if $G$ is overfull. Conversely, Hilton and Zhao in 1996 conjectured that if $G$ is a simple connected graph with $Δ\ge 3$ and $Δ(G_Δ)\le 2$, then $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ implies that $G$ is overfull or $G=P^*$, where $P^*$ is obtained from the Petersen graph by deleting a vertex (Core Conjecture). The goal of this paper is to develop the concepts of ``pseudo-multifan'' and ``lollipop'' and study their properties in an edge colored graph. These concepts turn out to be powerful tools in edge coloring graphs with a small core degree.

A 1-Separation Formula for the Graph Kemeny Constant and Braess Edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kemeny's constant of a simple connected graph $G$ is the expected length of a random walk from $i$ to any given vertex $j \neq i$. We provide a simple method for computing Kemeny's constant for 1-separable via effective resistance methods from electrical network theory. Using this formula, we furnish a simple proof that the path graph on $n$ vertices maximizes Kemeny's constant for the class of undirected trees on $n$ vertices. Applying this method again, we simplify existing expressions for the Kemeny's constant of barbell graphs and demonstrate which barbell maximizes Kemeny's constant. This 1-separation identity further allows us to create sufficient conditions for the existence of Braess edges in 1-separable graphs. We generalize the notion of the Braess edge to Braess sets, collections of non-edges in a graph such that their addition to the base graph increases the Kemeny constant. We characterize Braess sets in graphs with any number of twin pendant vertices, generalizing work of Kirkland et.~al.~\cite{kirkland2016kemeny} and Ciardo \cite{ciardo2020braess}.
Metric and Edge Metric Dimension of Zigzag Edge Coronoid Fused with Starphene
Let $Γ=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph. $d(α,ε)=min\{d(α, w), d(α, d\}$ computes the distance between a vertex $α\in V(Γ)$ and an edge $ε=wd\in E(Γ)$. A single vertex $α$ is said to recognize (resolve) two different edges $ε_{1}$ and $ε_{2}$ from $E(Γ)$ if $d(α, ε_{2})\neq d(α, ε_{1}\}$. A subset of distinct ordered vertices $U_{E}\subseteq V(Γ)$ is said to be an edge metric generator for $Γ$ if every pair of distinct edges from $Γ$ are recognized by some element of $U_{E}$. An edge metric generator with a minimum number of elements in it, is called an edge metric basis for $Γ$. Then, the cardinality of this edge metric basis of $Γ$, is called the edge metric dimension of $Γ$, denoted by $edim(Γ)$. The concept of studying chemical structures using graph theory terminologies is both appealing and practical. It enables chemical researchers to more precisely and easily examine various chemical topologies and networks. In this article, we investigate a fascinating cluster of organic chemistry as a result of this motivation. We consider a zigzag edge coronoid fused with starphene and find its minimum vertex and edge metric generators.
Radio-k-Labeling of Cycles for Large k
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph. For any two vertices $u$ and $v$, let $d(u,v)$ denote the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$. A radio-$k$-labeling of $G$ for a fixed positive integer $k$ is a function $f$ which assigns to each vertex a non-negative integer label such that for every two vertices $u$ and $ v $ in $G$, $|f(u)-f(v)| \geq k - d(u,v) +1$. The span of $f$ is the difference between the largest and smallest labels of $f(V)$. The radio-$k$-number of a graph $G$, denoted by $rn_k(G)$, is the smallest span among all radio-$k$-labelings admitted by $G$. A cycle $C_n$ has diameter $d=\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$. In this paper, we combine a lower bound approach with cyclic group structure to determine the value of $ rn_k(C_n)$ for $k \geq n-3$. For $d \leq k < n-3$, we obtain the values of $rn_k(C_n)$ when $n$ and $k$ have the same parity, and prove partial results when $n$ and $k$ have different parities. Our results extend the known values of $rn_d (C_n)$ and $rn_{d+1} (C_n)$ shown by Liu and Zhu, and by Karst, Langowitz, Oehrlein and Troxell, respectively.
On normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs associated to finite cyclic groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a simple connected graph $ G $ of order $ n $, the normalized Laplacian is a square matrix of order $ n $, defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)= D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L(G)D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $ D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}} $ is the diagonal matrix whose $ i$-th diagonal entry is $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_{i}}} $. In this article, we find the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of the joined union of regular graphs in terms of the adjacency eigenvalues and the eigenvalues of quotient matrix associated with graph $ G $. For a finite group $\mathcal{G}$, the power graph $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{G})$ of a group $ \mathcal{G} $ is defined as the simple graph in which two distinct vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one is the power of other. As a consequence of the joined union of graphs, we investigate the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs of finite cyclic group $ \mathbb{Z}_{n}. $

Multivariate blowup-polynomials of graphs
In recent joint work (2021), we introduced a novel multivariate polynomial attached to every metric space - in particular, to every finite simple connected graph $G$ - and showed it has several attractive properties. First, it is multi-affine and real-stable (leading to a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid for each graph $G$). Second, the polynomial specializes to (a transform of) the characteristic polynomial $χ_{D_G}$ of the distance matrix $D_G$; as well as recovers the entire graph, where $χ_{D_G}$ cannot do so. Third, the polynomial encodes the determinants of a family of graphs formed from $G$, called the blowups of $G$. In this short note, we exhibit the applicability of these tools and techniques to other graph-matrices and their characteristic polynomials. As a particular case, we will see that the adjacency characteristic polynomial $χ_{A_G}$ is in fact the shadow of a richer multivariate blowup-polynomial, which is similarly multi-affine and real-stable. Moreover, this polynomial encodes not only the aforementioned three properties, but also yields additional information for specific families of graphs.

A Graph Decomposition motivated by the Geometry of Randomized Rounding
We introduce a graph decomposition which exists for all simple, connected graphs $G=(V,E)$. The decomposition $V = A \cup B \cup C$ is such that each vertex in $A$ has more neighbors in $B$ than in $A$ and vice versa. $C$ is `balanced': each $v \in C$ has the same number of neighbours in $A$ and $B$. These decompositions arise naturally from the behavior of an associated dynamical system (`Randomized Rounding') on $(\mathbb{S}^1)^{|V|}$. Connections to judicious partitions and the \textsc{MaxCut} problem (in particular the Burer-Monteiro-Zhang heuristic) are being discussed.
Quantitative characteristics of cycles and their relations with stretch and spanning tree congestion
The main goal of this article is to introduce new quantitative characteristics of cycles in finite simple connected graphs and to establish relations of these characteristics with the stretch and spanning tree congestion of graphs. The main new parameter is named the support number. We give a polynomial approximation algorithm for the support number with the aid of yet another characteristic we introduce, named the cycle width of the graph.

On the first three minimum Mostar indices of tree-like phenylenes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G =(V_{G}, E_{G})$ be a simple connected graph with its vertex set $V_{G}$ and edge set $E_{G}$. The Mostar index $Mo(G)$ was defined as $Mo(G)=\sum\limits_{e=uv\in E(G)}|n_{u}-n_{v}|$, where $n_{u}$ (resp., $n_{v}$) is the number of vertices whose distance to vertex $u$ (resp., $v$) is smaller than the distance to vertex $v$ (resp., $u$). In this study, we determine the first three minimum Mostar indices of tree-like phenylenes and characterize all the tree-like phenylenes attaining these values. At last, we give some numerical examples and discussion.

The distance energy of a simple connected graph $G$ is defined as the sum of absolute values of its distance eigenvalues. In this paper, we mainly give a positive answer to a conjecture of distance energy of clique trees proposed by Lin, Liu and Lu [H.~Q.~ Lin, R.~F.~Liu, X.~W.~Lu, The inertia and energy of the distance matrix of a connected graph, {\it Linear Algebra Appl.,} 467 (2015), 29-39.]

Counting Hamiltonian cycles in 2-tiled graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1930, Kuratowski showed that $K_{3,3}$ and $K_5$ are the only two minor-minimal non-planar graphs. Robertson and Seymour extended finiteness of the set of forbidden minors for any surface. Širáň and Kochol showed that there are infinitely many $k$-crossing-critical graphs for any $k\ge 2$, even if restricted to simple $3$-connected graphs. Recently, $2$-crossing-critical graphs have been completely characterized by Bokal, Oporowski, Richter, and Salazar. We present a simplified description of large 2-crossing-critical graphs and use this simplification to count Hamiltonian cycles in such graphs. We generalize this approach to an algorithm counting Hamiltonian cycles in all 2-tiled graphs, thus extending the results of Bodroža-Pantić, Kwong, Doroslovački, and Pantić for $n = 2$.
