Lattice Models, Hamiltonian Operators, and Symmetric Functions
We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation.
The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models.
Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)
Relating three combinatorial formulas for type $A$ Whittaker functions
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in terms of certain fillings of Young diagrams, and is derived from, or is analogous to the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The third formula is in terms of the classical semistandard Young tableaux. We study the way in which each such formula is obtained from the previous one by combining terms $-$ a phenomenon called compression. No such results existed in the case of Whittaker functions.
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings

Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$.
In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model.
We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.
An insertion algorithm for multiplying Demazure characters by Schur polynomials
We introduce an insertion algorithm on Kohnert's combinatorial model for Demazure characters, generalizing Robinson--Schensted--Knuth insertion on tableaux. Our new insertion yields an explicit, nonnegative formula expressing the product of a Demazure character and a Schur polynomial as a sum of Schubert characters, partially resolving Polo's conjecture that the tensor product of Demazure modules admits a Schubert filtration.

We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided.
In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.

We prove a novel pair of Littlewood identities for Schur functions, recently conjectured by Lee, Rains and Warnaar in the Macdonald case, in which the sum is over partitions with empty 2-core. As a byproduct we obtain a new Littlewood identity in the spirit of Littlewood's original formulae.

Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question.
In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.
Inequality of a class of near-ribbon skew Schur Q-functions

While equality of skew Schur functions is well understood, the problem of determining when two skew Schur $Q$ functions are equal is still largely open. It has been studied in the case of ribbon shapes in 2008 by Barekat and van Willigenburg, and this paper approaches the problem for near-ribbon shapes, formed by adding one box to a ribbon skew shape. We particularly consider frayed ribbons, that is, the near-ribbons whose shifted skew shape is not an ordinary skew shape. We conjecture, with evidence, that all Schur $Q$ functions of frayed ribbon shape are distinct up to antipodal reflection. We prove this conjecture for several infinite families of frayed ribbons, using a new approach via the "lattice walks" version of the shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule discovered in 2018 by Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo.

The fusion ring for $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories is known to be isomorphic to a factor ring of the ring of symmetric polynomials presented by Schur polynomials. We introduce a deformation of this factor ring associated with eigenpolynomials for the elliptic Ruijsenaars difference operators. The corresponding Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are governed by a Pieri rule stemming from the eigenvalue equation. The orthogonality of the eigenbasis gives rise to an analog of the Verlinde formula. In the trigonometric limit, our construction recovers the refined $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring associated with the Macdonald polynomials.
Grothendieck to Lascoux expansions

We establish the conjecture of Reiner and Yong for an explicit combinatorial formula for the expansion of a Grothendieck polynomial into the basis of Lascoux polynomials. This expansion is a subtle refinement of its symmetric function version due to Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong, which gives the expansion of stable Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. Our expansion is the K-theoretic analogue of that of a Schubert polynomial into Demazure characters, whose symmetric analogue is the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function into Schur functions. Our expansions extend to flagged Grothendieck polynomials.
Schubert polynomials, the inhomogeneous TASEP, and evil-avoiding permutations

Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distribution was conjecturally linked to Schubert polynomials by Lam-Williams, and explicit formulas for steady state probabilities were subsequently given in terms of multiline queues by Ayyer-Linusson and Arita-Mallick. In the case of general $y_i$, Cantini showed that $n$ of the $n!$ states have probabilities proportional to products of double Schubert polynomials. In this paper we introduce the class of evil-avoiding permutations, which are the permutations avoiding the patterns $2413, 4132, 4213$ and $3214$. We show that there are $\frac{(2+\sqrt{2})^{n-1}+(2-\sqrt{2})^{n-1}}{2}$ evil-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and for each evil-avoiding permutation $w$, we give an explicit formula for the steady state probability $ψ_w$ as a product of double Schubert polynomials. We also show that the Schubert polynomials that arise in these formulas are flagged Schur functions, and give a bijection in this case between multiline queues and semistandard Young tableaux.
The relation between alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions: $n+3$ pairs of equivalent statistics

There is the same number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices (ASMs) as there is of descending plane partitions (DPPs) with parts no greater than $n$, but finding an explicit bijection is an open problem for about $40$ years now. So far, quadruples of statistics on ASMs and on DPPs that have the same joint distribution have been identified. We introduce extensions of ASMs and of DPPs along with $n+3$ statistics on each extension, and show that the two families of statistics have the same joint distribution. The ASM-DPP equinumerosity is obtained as an easy consequence by considering the $(-1)$-enumerations of these extended objects with respect to one pair of the $n+3$ pairs of statistics. One may speculate that the fact that these extensions might be necessary to have this significance increase in the number of statistics, as well as the involvement of signs when specializing to ASMs and DPPs may hint at the obstacles in finding an explicit bijection between ASMs and DPPs. One important tool for our proof is a multivariate generalization of the operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row that generalizes Schur functions.
Identity between Restricted Cauchy Sums for the $q$-Whittaker and Skew Schur Polynomials

The Cauchy identities play an important role in the theory of symmetric functions. It is known that Cauchy sums for the $q$-Whittaker and the skew Schur polynomials produce the same factorized expressions modulo a $q$-Pochhammer symbol. We consider the sums with restrictions on the length of the first rows for labels of both polynomials and prove an identity which relates them. The proof is based on techniques from integrable probability: we rewrite the identity in terms of two probability measures: the $q$-Whittaker measure and the periodic Schur measure. The relation follows by comparing their Fredholm determinant formulas.
Skew RSK dynamics: Greene invariants, affine crystals and applications to $q$-Whittaker polynomials

Iterating the skew RSK correspondence discovered by Sagan and Stanley in the late '80s, we define a deterministic dynamics on the space of pairs of skew Young tableaux $(P,Q)$. We find that this skew RSK dynamics displays conservation laws which, in the picture of Viennot's shadow line construction, identify generalizations of Greene invariants.
The introduction of a novel realization of $0$-th Kashiwara operators reveals that the skew RSK dynamics possesses symmetries induced by an affine bicrystal structure,
which, combined with connectedness properties of Demazure crystals, leads to its linearization.
Studying asymptotic evolution of the dynamics started from a pair of skew tableaux $(P,Q)$, we discover a new bijection $Υ: (P,Q) \mapsto (V,W; κ, ν)$. Here $(V,W)$ is a pair of
vertically strict tableaux, i.e., column strict filling of Young diagrams with no condition on rows, with shape prescribed by the Greene invariant, $κ$ is an array of non-negative weights and $ν$ is a partition.
An application of this construction is the first bijective proof of Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving $q$-Whittaker polynomials. New identities relating sums of $q$-Whittaker and Schur polynomials are also presented.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a unified method for dealing with various 0-Hecke modules constructed using tableaux so far. To do this, we assign a $0$-Hecke module to each left weak Bruhat interval, called a weak Bruhat interval module. We prove that every indecomposable summand of the $0$-Hecke modules categorifying dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, extended Schur functions, quasisymmetric Schur functions, and Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions is a weak Bruhat interval module. We further study embedding into the regular representation, induction product, restriction, and (anti-)involution twists of weak Bruhat interval modules.

Mason and Remmel introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions known as the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This basis is generated combinatorially by fillings of composition diagrams that are analogous to the row-strict tableaux that generate Schur functions. We introduce a modification known as Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions, which are generated by row-strict Young composition fillings. After discussing basic combinatorial properties of these functions, we define a skew Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function using the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and then prove this is equivalent to a combinatorial description. We also provide a decomposition of the skew Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions into a sum of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions and prove a multiplication rule for the product of a Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a Schur function.

We study the Pieri type formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions along with those for the Schur polynomials. To formulate these formulas, we introduce a new insertion rule for adding boxes in the Young tableaux and obtain the results for the hook type Schur multiple zeta functions. For the proof, we show {certain} extended Jacobi-Trudi formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions.
Schur functions in noncommuting variables

In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions.
We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.
Principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Schur polynomials are special cases of Schubert polynomials, which in turn are special cases of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. The principal specialization of Schur and Schubert polynomials has a long history, with Macdonald famously expressing the principal specialization of any Schubert polynomial in terms of reduced words. We study the principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl~modules. Our result yields an alternative proof of a conjecture of Stanley about the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials, originally proved by Weigandt.
The "Young" and "reverse" dichotomy of polynomials

A "flip-and-reversal" involution arising in the study of quasisymmetric Schur functions provides a passage between what we term "Young" and "reverse" variants of bases of polynomials or quasisymmetric functions. Building on this perspective, which has found recent application in the study of $q$-analogues of combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalizations of dual immaculate functions, we develop and explore Young analogues of well-known bases for polynomials. We prove several combinatorial formulas for the Young analogue of the key polynomials, show that they form the generating functions for left keys, and provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of Young key polynomials as traces on certain modules. We also give combinatorial formulas for the Young analogues of Schubert polynomials, including their crystal graph structure. We moreover determine the intersections of (reverse) bases and their Young counterparts, further clarifying their relationships to one another.
