Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures.

The complex orthogonal and symplectic groups both act on the complete flag variety with finitely many orbits. We study two families of polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong representing the $K$-theory classes of the closures of these orbits. Our polynomials are analogous to the Grothendieck polynomials representing $K$-classes of Schubert varieties, and we show that like Grothendieck polynomials, they are uniquely characterized among all polynomials representing the relevant classes by a certain stability property. We show that the same polynomials represent the equivariant $K$-classes of symmetric and skew-symmetric analogues of Knutson and Miller's matrix Schubert varieties. We derive explicit expressions for these polynomials in special cases, including a Pfaffian formula relying on a more general degeneracy locus formula of Anderson. Finally, we show that taking an appropriate limit of our representatives recovers the $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse.
Smoothness of Schubert varieties indexed by involutions in finite simply laced types
We prove that in finite, simply laced types, every Schubert variety indexed by an involution which is not the longest element of some parabolic subgroup is singular.
Palindromic intervals in Bruhat order and hyperplane arrangements
An element $w$ of the Weyl group is called rationally smooth if the corresponding Schubert variety is rationally smooth. This happens exactly when the lower interval $[id,w]$ in the Bruhat order is palindromic. For each element $w$ of the Weyl group, we construct a certain hyperplane arrangement. After analyzing the palindromic intervals inside the maximal quotients, we use this result to show that the generating function for regions of the arrangement coincides with the Poincaré polynomial of the corresponding Schubert variety if and only if the Schubert variety is rationally smooth.

We study the combinatorics of Gröbner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Plücker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterization of toric ideals among these degenerations in terms of the combinatorics of matching fields, permutations, and semi-standard tableaux.
Local properties of Schubert Varieties in the Symplectic Grassmannian via a bounded RSK correspondence
In a paper by Ghorpade and Raghavan, they provide an explicit combinatorial description of the Hilbert function of the tangent cone at any point on a Schubert variety in the symplectic Grassmannian, by giving a certain "degree-preserving" bijection between a set of monomials defined by an initial ideal and a "standard monomial basis". We prove here that this bijection is in fact a bounded RSK correspondence.
Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.
Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties.
We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

In this article we explain how the coordinate ring of each (open) Schubert variety in the Grassmannian can be identified with a cluster algebra, whose combinatorial structure is encoded using (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This result generalizes a theorem of Scott (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian, and proves a folklore conjecture for Schubert varieties that has been believed by experts since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until Müller-Speyer explicitly conjectured it (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of Leclerc (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety can be identified with cluster algebras. Our proof also uses a construction of Karpman (Karpman 2016) to build plabic graphs associated to reduced expressions. We additionally generalize our result to the setting of skew Schubert varieties; the latter result uses generalized plabic graphs, i.e. plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.
Combinatorics of cluster structures in Schubert varieties
We give an explicit combinatorial description of cluster structures in Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian in terms of (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This description is a natural generalization of the description given by (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian and has been believed by experts essentially since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety admit cluster structures. We also adapt a construction of (Karpman 2016) to build cluster seeds associated to reduced expressions. Further, we explicitly describe cluster structures in skew Schubert varieties using plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.

We study the double Grothendieck polynomials of Kirillov--Naruse for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. These functions are explicitly written as sums of Pfaffian and are identified with the stable limits of the fundamental classes of Schubert varieties in the torus equivariant connective K-theory of these isotropic Grassmannians. We also provide a combinatorial description of the ring formally spanned by double Grothendieck polynomials.

Let $L$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_N$ which acts by left multiplication on a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. We say that $X(w)$ is a spherical Schubert variety if $X(w)$ is a spherical variety for the action of $L$. In earlier work we provide a combinatorial description of the decomposition of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ into irreducible $L$-modules for the induced action of $L$. In this work we classify those decompositions into irreducible $L$-modules that are multiplicity-free. This is then applied towards giving a complete classification of the spherical Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian.

A positroid variety is an intersection of cyclically rotated Grassmannian Schubert varieties. Each graded piece of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety is the intersection of cyclically rotated (rectangular) Demazure modules, which we call the cyclic Demazure module. In this note, we show that the cyclic Demazure module has a canonical basis, and define the cyclic Demazure crystal.
Automorphisms on the ring of symmetric functions and stable and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials
The dual stable Grothendieck polynomials $g_λ$ and their sums $\sum_{μ\subsetλ} g_μ$ (which represent $K$-homology classes of boundary ideal sheaves and structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannians) have the same product structure constants. In this paper we first explain that the ring automorphism $g_λ\mapsto\sum_{μ\subsetλ} g_μ$ on the ring of symmetric functions is described as the operator $F^\perp$, the adjoint of the multiplication $(F\cdot)$, by a "group-like" element $F=\sum_{i} h_i$ where $h_i$ is the complete symmetric function. Next we give a generalization: starting with another "group-like" elements $\sum_{i} t^i h_i$, we obtain a deformation with a parameter $t$ of the ring automorphism above, as well as identities involving stable and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials.
Degenerate Schubert Varieties in Type A
We introduce rectangular elements in the symmetric group. In the framework of PBW degenerations, we show that in type A the degenerate Schubert variety associated to a rectangular element is indeed a Schubert variety in a partial flag variety of the same type with larger rank. Moreover, the degenerate Demazure module associated to a rectangular element is isomorphic to the Demazure module for this particular Schubert variety of larger rank. This generalizes previous results by Cerulli Irelli, Lanini and Littelmann for the PBW degenerate flag variety.

The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A_{n-1}$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and well studied. In this paper we introduce the notion of a generic torus orbit in the Schubert variety $X_w$ $(w\in \mathfrak{S}_n)$ and study its closure $Y_w$. We identify the maximal cone in the fan of $Y_w$ corresponding to a fixed point $uB$ $(u\le w)$, associate a graph $Γ_w(u)$ to each $u\le w$, and show that $Y_w$ is smooth at $uB$ if and only if $Γ_w(u)$ is a forest. We also introduce a polynomial $A_w(t)$ for each $w$, which agrees with the Eulerian polynomial when $w$ is the longest element of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and show that the Poincaré polynomial of $Y_w$ agrees with $A_w(t^2)$ when $Y_w$ is smooth.

This paper explores the possible use of Schubert cells and Schubert varieties in finite geometry, particularly in regard to the question of whether these objects might be a source of understanding of ovoids or provide new examples. The main result provides a characterization of those Schubert cells for finite Chevalley groups which have the first property (thinness) of ovoids. More importantly, perhaps this short paper can help to bridge the modern language barrier between finite geometry and representation theory. For this purpose, this paper includes very brief surveys of the powerful lattice theory point of view from finite geometry and the powerful method of indexing points of flag varieties by Chevalley generators from representation theory.

It is well known that many geometric properties of Schubert varieties of type $A$ can be interpreted combinatorially. Given two permutations $w,x\in S_n$ we give a combinatorial consequence of the property that the smooth locus of the Schubert variety $X_w$ contains the Schubert cell $Y_x$. This is a necessary ingredient for the interpretation of recent representation-theoretic results of the author with Mínguez in terms of identities of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Prism tableaux for alternating sign matrix varieties
A prism tableau is a set of reverse semistandard tableaux, each positioned within an ambient grid. Prism tableaux were introduced to provide a formula for the Schubert polynomials of A. Lascoux and M.P. Schützenberger. This formula directly generalizes the well known expression for Schur polynomials as a sum over semistandard tableaux. Alternating sign matrix varieties generalize the matrix Schubert varieties of W. Fulton. We use prism tableaux to give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety.
