The distribution of height and diameter in random non-plane binary trees
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms, vol. 41, pp. 215--252, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
This study is dedicated to precise distributional analyses of the height of non-plane unlabelled binary trees ("Otter trees"), when trees of a given size are taken with equal likelihood. The height of a rooted tree of size $n$ is proved to admit a limiting theta distribution, both in a central and local sense, as well as obey moderate as well as large deviations estimates. The approximations obtained for height also yield the limiting distribution of the diameter of unrooted trees. The proofs rely on a precise analysis, in the complex plane and near singularities, of generating functions associated with trees of bounded height.

Path ideals of rooted trees and their graded Betti numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a rooted tree and let $t$ be a positive integer. We study algebraic invariants and properties of the path ideal generated by monomial corresponding to paths of length $(t-1)$ in $Γ$. In particular, we give a recursive formula to compute the graded Betti numbers, a general bound for the regularity, an explicit computation of the linear strand, and we characterize when this path ideal has a linear resolution.

Factorizations of cycles and multi-noded rooted trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study factorizations of cycles. The main result is that under certain condition, the number of ways to factor a $d$-cycle into a product of cycles of prescribed lengths is $d^{r-2}.$ To prove our result, we first define a new class of combinatorial objects, multi-noded rooted trees, which generalize rooted trees. We find the cardinality of this new class which with proper parameters is exactly $d^{r-2}.$ The main part of this paper is the proof that there is a bijection from factorizations of a $d$-cycle to multi-noded rooted trees via factorization graphs. This implies the desired formula. The factorization problem we consider has its origin in geometry, and is related to the study of a special family of Hurwitz numbers: pure-cycle Hurwitz numbers. Via the standard translation of Hurwitz numbers into group theory, our main result is equivalent to the following: when the genus is $0$ and one of the ramification indices is $d,$ the degree of the covers, the pure-cycle Hurwitz number is $d^{r-3},$ where $r$ is the number of branch points.

Pre-Lie algebras and Incidence Categories of Colored Rooted Trees
The incidence category $\C_{\F}$ of a family $\F$ of colored posets closed under disjoint unions and the operation of taking convex sub-posets was introduced by the author in \cite{Sz}, where the Ringel-Hall algebra $\H_{\F}$ of $\C_{\F}$ was also defined. We show that if the Hasse diagrams underlying $\F$ are rooted trees, then the subspace $\n_{\F}$ of primitive elements of $\H_{\F}$ carries a pre-Lie structure, defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and with positive structure constants. We give several examples of $\n_{\F}$, including the nilpotent subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, $L \mathfrak{gl}_n$, and several others.

Ordered forests, permutations and iterated integrals

We construct an explicit Hopf algebra isomorphism from the algebra of heap-ordered trees to that of quasi-symmetric functions, generated by formal permutations, which is a lift of the natural projection of the Connes-Kreimer algebra of decorated rooted trees onto the shuffle algebra. This isomorphism gives a universal way of lifting measure-indexed characters of the Connes-Kreimer algebra into measure-indexed characters of the shuffle algebra, already introduced in \cite{Unterberger} in the framework of rough path theory as the so-called Fourier normal ordering algorithm.

The Shape of Unlabeled Rooted Random Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the number of nodes in the levels of unlabelled rooted random trees and show that the stochastic process given by the properly scaled level sizes weakly converges to the local time of a standard Brownian excursion. Furthermore we compute the average and the distribution of the height of such trees. These results extend existing results for conditioned Galton-Watson trees and forests to the case of unlabelled rooted trees and show that they behave in this respect essentially like a conditioned Galton-Watson process.
Partition functions of the Ising model on some self-similar Schreier graphs
Published in Progress in Probability: Random Walks, Boundaries and Spectra (D.Lenz, F. Sobieczky and W. Woess editors), 64 (2011), 277-304, Springer Basel • Search Publication
We study partition functions and thermodynamic limits for the Ising model on three families of finite graphs converging to infinite self-similar graphs. They are provided by three well-known groups realized as automorphism groups of regular rooted trees: the first Grigorchuk's group of intermediate growth; the iterated monodromy group of the complex polynomial $z^2-1$ known as the Basilica group; and the Hanoi Towers group $H^{(3)}$ closely related to the Sierpinsky gasket.

A sharp analysis of the mixing time for random walk on rooted trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define an analog of Plancherel measure for the set of rooted unlabeled trees on n vertices, and a Markov chain which has this measure as its stationary distribution. Using the combinatorics of commutation relations, we show that order n^2 steps are necessary and suffice for convergence to the stationary distribution.

Tree Orbits under Permutation Group Action: Algorithm, Enumeration and Application to Viral Assembly
This paper uses combinatorics and group theory to answer questions about the assembly of icosahedral viral shells. Although the geometric structure of the capsid (shell) is fairly well understood in terms of its constituent subunits, the assembly process is not. For the purpose of this paper, the capsid is modeled by a polyhedron whose facets represent the monomers. The assembly process is modeled by a rooted tree, the leaves representing the facets of the polyhedron, the root representing the assembled polyhedron, and the internal vertices representing intermediate stages of assembly (subsets of facets). Besides its virological motivation, the enumeration of orbits of trees under the action of a finite group is of independent mathematical interest. If $G$ is a finite group acting on a finite set $X$, then there is a natural induced action of $G$ on the set $\mathcal{T}_X$ of trees whose leaves are bijectively labeled by the elements of $X$. If $G$ acts simply on $X$, then $|X| := |X_n| = n \cdot |G|$, where $n$ is the number of $G$-orbits in $X$. The basic combinatorial results in this paper are (1) a formula for the number of orbits of each size in the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{T}_{X_n}$, for every $n$, and (2) a simple algorithm to find the stabilizer of a tree $τ\in \mathcal{T}_X$ in $G$ that runs in linear time and does not need memory in addition to its input tree.

d-Complete Posets Generalize Young Diagrams for the Jeu de Taquin Property
The jeu de taquin process produced a standard Young tableau from a skew standard Young tableau by shifting its entries to the northwest. We generalize this process to posets: certain partial numberings of any poset are shifted upward. A poset is said to have the jeu de taquin property if the numberings resulting from this process do not depend upon certain choices made during the process. Young diagrams are the posets which underlie standard Young tableaux. These posets have the jeu de taquin property. d-Complete posets are posets which satisfy certain local structual conditions. They are mutual generalizations of Young diagrams, shifted Young diagrams, and rooted trees. We prove that all d-complete posets have the jeu de taquin property. The proof shows that each d-complete poset actually has the stronger "simultaneous" property; this may lead to an algebraic understanding of the main result. A partial converse is stated: "Non-overlapping" simultaneous posets are d-complete.

Strong approximation in random towers of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The term "strong approximation" is used to describe phenomena where an arithmetic group as well as all of its Zariski dense subgroups have a large image in the congruence quotients. We exhibit analogues of such phenomena in a probabilistic, rather than arithmetic, setting. Let T be the binary rooted tree, Aut(T) its automorphism group. To a given m-tuple a = {a_1,a_2,...,a_m} in Aut(T), we associate a tower of 2m-regular Schreier graphs ...X_n-->X_{n-1}-->...-->X_0. The vertices of X_n are the n^{th} level of the tree and two such are connected by an edge if a generator takes one to the other. When {a_i} are independent Haar-random elements of Aut(T) we retrieve the standard model for iterated random 2-lifts studied, for example by Bilu-Linial. If w={w_1,w_2,...,w_l} are words in the free group F_m, the random substitutions w(a) := {w_1(a),...,w_l(a)} give rise to new models for random towers of 2l-regular graphs: ...Y_n-->Y_{n-1}-->...-->Y_0. With the above notation, the following hold almost surely, for every non cyclic subgroup D in F_m: (i) the graphs $Y_n$ have a bounded number of connected components, (ii) these connected components form a family of expander graphs, (iii) the closure of D has positive Hausdorff dimension as a subgroup of the (metric) group Aut(T).

Koszul duality for monoids and the operad of enriched rooted trees
We introduce here the notion of Koszul duality for monoids in the monoidal category of species with respect to the ordinary product. To each Koszul monoid we associate a class of Koszul algebras in the sense of Priddy, by taking the corresponding analytic functor. The operad $\mathscr{A}_M$ of rooted trees enriched with a monoid $M$ was introduced by the author many years ago. One special case of that is the operad of ordinary rooted trees, called in the recent literature the permutative non associative operad. We prove here that $\mathscr{A}_M$ is Koszul if and only if the corresponding monoid $M$ is Koszul. In this way we obtain a wide family of Koszul operads, extending a recent result of Chapoton and Livernet, and providing an interesting link between Koszul duality for associative algebras and Koszul duality for operads.

Rooted trees and symmetric functions: Zhao's homomorphism and the commutative hexagon

Recent work on perturbative quantum field theory has led to much study of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. Its (graded) dual, the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of rooted trees, had already been studied by algebraists. L. Foissy introduced a noncommutative version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra, which turns out to be self-dual. Using some homomorphisms defined by the author and W. Zhao, we describe a commutative diagram that relates the aforementioned Hopf algebras to each other and to the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasi-symmetric functions.

The number of elements in the mutation class of a quiver of type $D_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the number of quivers in the mutation class of a quiver of Dynkin type $D_n$ is given by $\sum_{d|n} φ(n/d)\binom{2d}{d}/(2n)$ for $n \geq 5$. To obtain this formula, we give a correspondence between the quivers in the mutation class and certain rooted trees.

Bonato and Tardif conjectured that the number of isomorphism classes of trees mutually embeddable with a given tree T is either 1 or infinite. We prove the analogue of their conjecture for rooted trees. We also discuss the original conjecture for locally finite trees and state some new conjectures.

Two interacting Hopf algebras of trees
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 47 (2011) 282-308 • View Publication • BIB
Hopf algebra structures on rooted trees are by now a well-studied object, especially in the context of combinatorics. In this work we consider a Hopf algebra H by introducing a coproduct on a (commutative) algebra of rooted forests, considering each tree of the forest (which must contain at least one edge) as a Feynman-like graph without loops. The primitive part of the graded dual is endowed with a pre-Lie product defined in terms of insertion of a tree inside another. We establish a surprising link between the Hopf algebra H obtained this way and the well-known Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees by means of a natural H-bicomodule structure on the latter. This enables us to recover recent results in the field of numerical methods for differential equations due to Chartier, Hairer and Vilmart as well as Murua.

A bijective enumeration of labeled trees with given indegree sequence
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 118(1), 115-128, 2011 • View Publication • BIB
For a labeled tree on the vertex set $\set{1,2,\ldots,n}$, the local direction of each edge $(i\,j)$ is from $i$ to $j$ if $i<j$. For a rooted tree, there is also a natural global direction of edges towards the root. The number of edges pointing to a vertex is called its indegree. Thus the local (resp. global) indegree sequence $λ= 1^{e_1}2^{e_2} \ldots$ of a tree on the vertex set $\set{1,2,\ldots,n}$ is a partition of $n-1$. We construct a bijection from (unrooted) trees to rooted trees such that the local indegree sequence of a (unrooted) tree equals the global indegree sequence of the corresponding rooted tree. Combining with a Prüfer-like code for rooted labeled trees, we obtain a bijective proof of a recent conjecture by Cotterill and also solve two open problems proposed by Du and Yin. We also prove a $q$-multisum binomial coefficient identity which confirms another conjecture of Cotterill in a very special case.

(Non)Commutative Hopf algebras of trees and (quasi)symmetric functions

The Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees, its dual, and the Foissy Hopf algebra of of planar rooted trees are related to each other and to the well-known Hopf algebras of symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions via a pair of commutative diagrams. We show how this point of view can simplify computations in the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra and its dual, particularly for combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations.
