Enumeration of minimal transversals of hypergraphs of bounded VC-dimension
We consider the problem of enumerating all minimal transversals (also called minimal hitting sets) of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$. An equivalent formulation of this problem known as the \emph{transversal hypergraph} problem (or \emph{hypergraph dualization} problem) is to decide, given two hypergraphs, whether one corresponds to the set of minimal transversals of the other. The existence of a polynomial time algorithm to solve this problem is a long standing open question. In \cite{fredman_complexity_1996}, the authors present the first sub-exponential algorithm to solve the transversal hypergraph problem which runs in quasi-polynomial time, making it unlikely that the problem is (co)NP-complete.
In this paper, we show that when one of the two hypergraphs is of bounded VC-dimension, the transversal hypergraph problem can be solved in polynomial time, or equivalently that if $\mathcal{H}$ is a hypergraph of bounded VC-dimension, then there exists an incremental polynomial time algorithm to enumerate its minimal transversals. This result generalizes most of the previously known polynomial cases in the literature since they almost all consider classes of hypergraphs of bounded VC-dimension. As a consequence, the hypergraph transversal problem is solvable in polynomial time for any class of hypergraphs closed under partial subhypergraphs. We also show that the proposed algorithm runs in quasi-polynomial time in general hypergraphs and runs in polynomial time if the conformality of the hypergraph is bounded, which is one of the few known polynomial cases where the VC-dimension is unbounded.
Enumeration of maps with tight boundaries and the Zhukovsky transformation

We consider maps with tight boundaries, i.e. maps whose boundaries have minimal length in their homotopy class, and discuss the properties of their generating functions $T^{(g)}_{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n}$ for fixed genus $g$ and prescribed boundary lengths $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n$, with a control on the degrees of inner faces. We find that these series appear as coefficients in the expansion of $ω^{(g)}_n(z_1,\ldots,z_n)$, a fundamental quantity in the Eynard-Orantin theory of topological recursion, thereby providing a combinatorial interpretation of the Zhukovsky transformation used in this context. This interpretation results from the so-called trumpet decomposition of maps with arbitrary boundaries. In the planar bipartite case, we obtain a fully explicit formula for $T^{(0)}_{2\ell_1,\ldots,2\ell_n}$ from the Collet-Fusy formula. We also find recursion relations satisfied by $T^{(g)}_{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n}$, which consist in adding an extra tight boundary, keeping the genus $g$ fixed. Building on a result of Norbury and Scott, we show that $T^{(g)}_{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n}$ is equal to a parity-dependent quasi-polynomial in $\ell_1^2,\ldots,\ell_n^2$ times a simple power of the basic generating function $R$. In passing, we provide a bijective derivation in the case $(g,n)=(0,3)$, generalizing a recent construction of ours to the non bipartite case.
Characteristic quasi-polynomials of deletions of Shi arrangements of type B and their period collapse
Characteristic quasi-polynomials are the enumerative functions counting the number of elements in the complement of hyperplane arrangements modulo positive integers. A notable phenomenon in this context is period collapse, where the quasi-polynomial reduces to a polynomial or has a smaller period than the lcm period. In this paper, we compute the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the restriction of the Shi arrangement of type B by one given hyperplane. As a corollary, we completely determine whether period collapse occurs in the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the deletion of the Shi arrangement of type B. This implies the solution for the conjecture posed by Higashitani, Tran and Yoshinaga in this case.

A three-path-configuration is a graph consisting of three pairwise internally-disjoint paths the union of every two of which is an induced cycle of length at least four. A graph is 3PC-free if no induced subgraph of it is a three-path-configuration. We prove that 3PC-free graphs have poly-logarithmic tree-independence number. More explicitly, we show that there exists a constant $c$ such that every $n$-vertex 3PC-free graph graph has a tree decomposition in which every bag has stability number at most $c (\log n)^2$. This implies that the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem, as well as several other natural algorithmic problems, that are known to be NP-hard in general, can be solved in quasi-polynomial time if the input graph is 3PC-free.

Answering a question of Gamarnik and Smedira, we give a polynomial time algorithm that approximately computes the volume of a truncation of a relaxation of the independent set polytope, improving on their quasi-polynomial time algorithm. Our algorithm is obtained by viewing the volume as an evaluation of a graph polynomial and we approximate this evaluation using Barvinok's interpolation method.

Given an irreducible root system, the Worpitzky-compatible subsets are defined by a geometric property of the alcoves inside the fundamental parallelepiped of the root system. This concept is motivated and mainly understood through a lattice point counting formula concerning the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In this paper, we show that the Worpitzky-compatibility has a simple combinatorial characterization in terms of roots. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete characterization by means of Worpitzky-compatibility for the freeness of the arrangements interpolating between the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. This is a completion of the earlier result by Yoshinaga in 2010 which was done for simply-laced root systems.
Sums of Weighted Lattice Points of Polytopes
We study the problem of counting lattice points of a polytope that are weighted by an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a family of parametric polytopes. As applications one can compute integrals and maximum values of such quasi-polynomials, as well as obtain new identities in representation theory. These topics have been of great interest to Michèle Vergne since the late 1980's. Our new contribution is a result that transforms weighted sums into unweighted sums, even when the weights are very general quasipolynomials. In some cases it leads to faster integration over a polytope. We can create new algebraic identities and conjectures in algebraic combinatorics and number theory.
Integrating High-Dimensional Functions Deterministically
We design a Quasi-Polynomial time deterministic approximation algorithm for computing the integral of a multi-dimensional separable function, supported by some underlying hyper-graph structure, appropriately defined. Equivalently, our integral is the partition function of a graphical model with continuous potentials. While randomized algorithms for high-dimensional integration are widely known, deterministic counterparts generally do not exist. We use the correlation decay method applied to the Riemann sum of the function to produce our algorithm. For our method to work, we require that the domain is bounded and the hyper-edge potentials are positive and bounded on the domain. We further assume that upper and lower bounds on the potentials separated by a multiplicative factor of $1 + O(1/Δ^2)$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. When $Δ= 3$, our method works provided the upper and lower bounds are separated by a factor of at most $1.0479$. To the best of our knowledge, our algorithm is the first deterministic algorithm for high-dimensional integration of a continuous function, apart from the case of trivial product form distributions.
Efficient Equidistribution of Nilsequences
We give improved bounds for the equidistribution of (multiparameter) nilsequences subject to any degree filtration. The bounds we obtain are single exponential in dimension, improving on double exponential bounds of Green and Tao. To obtain these bounds, we overcome "induction of dimension'' which is ubiquitous throughout higher order Fourier analysis.
The improved equidistribution theory is a crucial ingredient in the quasi-polynomial $U^4[N]$ inverse theorem of the author and its extension to the quasi-polynomial $U^{s + 1}[N]$ inverse theorem in joint work with Sah and Sawhney. These results lead to further applications in combinatorial number theory such as bounds for linear equations in the primes which save an arbitrary power of logarithm, which match the bounds Vinogradov obtained for the odd Goldbach conjecture.
Computing the Volume of a Restricted Independent Set Polytope Deterministically
We construct a quasi-polynomial time deterministic approximation algorithm for computing the volume of an independent set polytope with restrictions. Randomized polynomial time approximation algorithms for computing the volume of a convex body have been known now for several decades, but the corresponding deterministic counterparts are not available, and our algorithm is the first of this kind. The class of polytopes for which our algorithm applies arises as linear programming relaxation of the independent set problem with the additional restriction that each variable takes value in the interval $[0,1-α]$ for some $α<1/2$. (We note that the $α\ge 1/2$ case is trivial).
We use the correlation decay method for this problem applied to its appropriate and natural discretization. The method works provided $α> 1/2-O(1/Δ^2)$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. When $Δ=3$ (the sparsest non-trivial case), our method works provided $0.488<α<0.5$. Interestingly, the interpolation method, which is based on analyzing complex roots of the associated partition functions, fails even in the trivial case when the underlying graph is a singleton.
An algebraic combinatorial approach to Sylvester's denumerant

For a positive integer sequence $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1, \dots, a_{N+1})$, Sylvester's denumerant $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ counts the number of nonnegative integer solutions to $\sum_{i=1}^{N+1} a_i x_i = t$ for a nonnegative integer $t$. It has been extensively studied and a well-known result asserts that $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $t$ of degree $N$. A milestone is Baldoni et al.'s polynomial algorithm in 2015 for computing the top $k$ coefficients when $k$ is fixed. Their development uses heavily lattice point counting theory in computational geometry. In this paper, we explain their work in the context of algebraic combinatorics and simplify their computation. Our work is based on constant term method, Barvinok's unimodular cone decomposition, and recent results on fast computation of generalized Todd polynomials. We develop the algorithm \texttt{CT-Knapsack}, together with an implementation in \texttt{Maple}. Our algorithm avoids plenty of repeated computations and is hence faster.
Ehrhart theory on periodic graphs II: Stratified Ehrhart ring theory

We investigate the "stratified Ehrhart ring theory" for periodic graphs, which gives an algorithm for determining the growth sequences of periodic graphs. The growth sequence $(s_{Γ, x_0, i})_{i \ge 0}$ is defined for a graph $Γ$ and its fixed vertex $x_0$, where $s_{Γ, x_0, i}$ is defined as the number of vertices of $Γ$ at distance $i$ from $x_0$. Although the sequences $(s_{Γ, x_0, i})_{i \ge 0}$ for periodic graphs are known to be of quasi-polynomial type, their determination had not been established, even in dimension two. Our theory and algorithm can be applied to arbitrary periodic graphs of any dimension. As an application of the algorithm, we determine the growth sequences in several new examples.

Following a theorem of David R. Hayes, we give a geometric interpretation of the special value at $s=0$ of certain $1$-cocycle on $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ previously introduced by the author. This work yields three main results: an explicit formula for our cocycle at $s=0$, a generalization and a new proof of Hayes' theorem, and an elegant summation formula for the $0$th coefficient of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of certain triangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
A New and Faster Representation for Counting Integer Points in Parametric Polyhedra

In this paper, we consider the counting function $E_P(y) = |P_{y} \cap Z^{n_x}|$ for a parametric polyhedron $P_{y} = \{x \in R^{n_x} \colon A x \leq b + B y\}$, where $y \in R^{n_y}$. We give a new representation of $E_P(y)$, called a \emph{piece-wise step-polynomial with periodic coefficients}, which is a generalization of piece-wise step-polynomials and integer/rational Ehrhart's quasi-polynomials. It gives the fastest way to calculate $E_P(y)$ in certain scenarios. The most important cases are the following:
1) We show that, for the parametric polyhedron $P_y$ defined by a standard-form system $A x = y,\, x \geq 0$ with a fixed number of equalities, the function $E_P(y)$ can be represented by a polynomial-time computable function. In turn, such a representation of $E_P(y)$ can be constructed by an $poly\bigl(n, \|A\|_{\infty}\bigr)$-time algorithm;
2) Assuming again that the number of equalities is fixed, we show that integer/rational Ehrhart's quasi-polynomials of a polytope can be computed by FPT-algorithms, parameterized by sub-determinants of $A$ or its elements;
3) Our representation of $E_P$ is more efficient than other known approaches, if $A$ has bounded elements, especially if it is sparse in addition.
Additionally, we provide a discussion about possible applications in the area of compiler optimization. In some "natural" assumptions on a program code, our approach has the fastest complexity bounds.

Let the costs $C(i,j)$ for an instance of the Asymmetric Traveling Salesperson Problem (ATSP) be independent copies of a non-negative random variable $C$ from a class of distributions that include the uniform $[0,1]$ distribution and the exponential mean 1 distribution with mean 1. We describe an algorithm that solves ATSP exactly in time $e^{\log^{2+o(1)}n}$, w.h.p.
Limiting Moments of Autocorrelation Demerit Factors of Binary Sequences
Various problems in engineering and natural science demand binary sequences that do not resemble translates of themselves, that is, the sequences must have small aperiodic autocorrelation at every nonzero shift. If $f$ is a sequence, then the demerit factor of $f$ is the sum of the squared magnitudes of the autocorrelations at all nonzero shifts for the sequence obtained by normalizing $f$ to unit Euclidean norm. The demerit factor is the reciprocal of Golay's merit factor, and low demerit factor indicates low self-similarity of a sequence under translation. We endow the $2^\ell$ binary sequences of length $\ell$ with uniform probability measure and consider the distribution of their demerit factors. Earlier works used combinatorial techniques to find exact formulas for the mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis of the distribution as a function of $\ell$. These revealed that for $\ell \geq 4$, the $p$th central moment of this distribution is strictly positive for every $p \geq 2$. This article shows that for every $p$, the $p$th central moment is $\ell^{-2 p}$ times a quasi-polynomial function of $\ell$ with rational coefficients. It also shows that, in the limit as $\ell$ tends to infinity, the $p$th standardized moment is the same as that of the standard normal distribution.
External columns and chambers of vector partition functions

The vector partition function $p_A$ associated to a $d \times n$ matrix $A$ with integer entries is the function $\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{N}$ defined by $\mathbf{b} \to \#\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{N}^n : A\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{b}\}$. It is known that vector partition functions are piecewise quasi-polynomials whose domains of quasi-polynomiality are maximal cones (chambers) of a fan called the chamber complex of $A$.
In this article we introduce \emph{external columns} and \emph{external chambers} of vector partition functions. Our main result is that (up to a saturation condition) the quasi-polynomial associated to a chamber containing external columns arises from a vector partition function with $k$ fewer equations and variables. In the case that the chamber is external -- that is, when the number of external columns in a chamber is as large as possible without being trivial -- the quasi-polynomial arises from a coin exchange problem. By exploiting this we are able to obtain a determinantal formula, characterize when the quasi-polynomial is polynomial, and show that in this case it is actually given by a negative binomial coefficient. We then apply these results to the enumeration of loopless multigraphs satisfying some degree conditions. Finally, we suggest a generalization to a result of Baldoni and Vergne for polynomials arising from chambers that we call \emph{semi-external chambers}.

Given a rational polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, the numerical function counting lattice points in the integral dilations of $P$ is known to become a quasi-polynomial, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}_P$ of $P$. In this paper we study the following problem: Given a rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, is there a nice way to know Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of translated polytopes $P+ \mathbf v$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$? We provide a way to compute such Ehrhart quasi-polynomials using a certain toric arrangement and lattice point counting functions of translated cones of $P$. This method allows us to visualize how constituent polynomials of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ change in the torus $\mathbb R^d/\mathbb Z^d$. We also prove that information of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$ determines the rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ up to translations by integer vectors, and characterize all rational $d$-polytopes $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ such that $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ is symmetric for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$.
Efficient equidistribution of periodic nilsequences and applications
This is a companion paper to arXiv:2312.10772. We deduce an equidistribution theorem for periodic nilsequences and use this theorem to give two applications in arithmetic combinatorics. The first application is quasi-polynomial bounds for a certain complexity one polynomial progression, improving the iterated logarithm bound previusly obtained. The second application is a proof of the quasi-polynomial $U^4[N]$ inverse theorem. In work with Sah and Sawhney, we obtain improved bounds for sets lacking nontrivial $5$-term arithmetic progressions.

The purpose of this paper is to extend the scope of the Ehrhart theory to periodic graphs. We give sufficient conditions for the growth sequences of periodic graphs to be a quasi-polynomial and to satisfy the reciprocity laws. Furthermore, we apply our theory to determine the growth series in several new examples.
