The covered components polynomial: A new representation of the edge elimination polynomial
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 19 (2012), #50 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the definition of the edge elimination polynomial of a graph we define the covered components polynomial counting spanning subgraphs with respect to their number of components, edges and covered components. We prove a recurrence relation, which shows that both graph polynomials are substitution instances of each other. We give some properties of the covered components polynomial and some results concerning relations to other graph polynomials.

Kazhdan-Lusztig combinatorics in the moment graph setting
Published in Journal of Algebra 370 (2012), pg 152-170 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a question on the graded rank of the stalks of the canonical sheaf on a Bruhat graph, we lift some equalities concerning (parabolic) Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials to this moment graph setting. Our proofs hold also in positive characteristic, under some technical assumptions.

Chromatic polynomials of complements of bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bicliques are complements of bipartite graphs; as such each consists of two cliques joined by a number of edges. In this paper we study algebraic aspects of the chromatic polynomials of these graphs. We derive a formula for the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary biclique, and use this to give certain conditions under which two of the graphs have chromatic polynomials with the same splitting field. Finally, we use a subfamily of bicliques to prove the cubic case of the $α+n$ conjecture, by showing that for any cubic integer $α$, there is a natural number $n$ such that $α+n$ is a chromatic root.

A version of Tutte's polynomial for hypergraphs
Tutte's dichromate T(x,y) is a well known graph invariant. Using the original definition in terms of internal and external activities as our point of departure, we generalize the valuations T(x,1) and T(1,y) to hypergraphs. In the definition, we associate activities to hypertrees, which are generalizations of the indicator function of the edge set of a spanning tree. We prove that hypertrees form a lattice polytope which is the set of bases in a polymatroid. In fact, we extend our invariants to integer polymatroids as well. We also examine hypergraphs that can be represented by planar bipartite graphs, write their hypertree polytopes in the form of a determinant, and prove a duality property that leads to an extension of Tutte's Tree Trinity Theorem.

Factors of disconnected graphs and polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the uniqueness of factorisation of possibly disconnected finite graphs with respect to the Cartesian, the strong and the direct product. It is proved that if a graph has $n$ connected components, where $n$ is prime, or $n=1,4,8,9$, and satisfies some additional conditions, it factors uniquely under the given products. If, on the contrary, $n=6$ or 10, all cases of nonunique factorisation are described precisely.

On the theta number of powers of cycle graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a closed formula for Lovasz theta number of the powers of cycle graphs and of their complements, the circular complete graphs. As a consequence, we establish that the circular chromatic number of a circular perfect graph is computable in polynomial time. We also derive an asymptotic estimate for this theta number.

On the relation between quantum walks and zeta functions
Published in Quantum Information Processing, Vol.11, No.2, pp.341-349 (2012) • View Publication • BIB
We present an explicit formula for the characteristic polynomial of the transition matrix of the discrete-time quantum walk on a graph via the second weighted zeta function. As applications, we obtain new proofs for the results on spectra of the transition matrix and its positive support.

Binary Cumulant Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Algebraic statistics for binary random variables is concerned with highly structured algebraic varieties in the space of 2x2x...x2-tensors. We demonstrate the advantages of representing such varieties in the coordinate system of binary cumulants. Our primary focus lies on hidden subset models. Parametrizations and implicit equations in cumulants are derived for hyperdeterminants, for secant and tangential varieties of Segre varieties, and for certain context-specific independence models. Extending work of Rota and collaborators, we explore the polynomial inequalities satisfied by cumulants.
The Möbius function of the consecutive pattern poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
An occurrence of a consecutive permutation pattern $p$ in a permutation $π$ is a segment of consecutive letters of $π$ whose values appear in the same order of size as the letters in $p$. The set of all permutations forms a poset with respect to such pattern containment. We compute the Möbius function of intervals in this poset, providing what may be called a complete solution to the problem. For most intervals our results give an immediate answer to the question. In the remaining cases, we give a polynomial time algorithm to compute the Möbius function. In particular, we show that the Möbius function only takes the values -1, 0 and 1.
On Volumes of Permutation Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper focuses on determining the volumes of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic groups, dihedral groups, groups of automorphisms of tree graphs, and Frobenius groups. We do this through the use of triangulations and the calculation of Ehrhart polynomials. We also present results on the theta body hierarchy of various permutation polytopes.

Simple Proofs of Classical Theorems in Discrete Geometry via the Guth--Katz Polynomial Partitioning Technique
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Guth and Katz \cite{GK2} invented, as a step in their nearly complete solution of Erdős's distinct distances problem, a new method for partitioning finite point sets in $\R^d$, based on the Stone--Tukey polynomial ham-sandwich theorem. We apply this method to obtain new and simple proofs of two well known results: the Szemerédi--Trotter theorem on incidences of points and lines, and the existence of spanning trees with low crossing numbers. Since we consider these proofs particularly suitable for teaching, we aim at self-contained, expository treatment. We also mention some generalizations and extensions, such as the Pach--Sharir bound on the number of incidences with algebraic curves of bounded degree.

Block Companion Singer Cycles, Primitive Recursive Vector Sequences, and Coprime Polynomial Pairs over Finite Fields
Published in Finite Fields Appl. 17 (2011), no. 5, 461-472 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss a conjecture concerning the enumeration of nonsingular matrices over a finite field that are block companion and whose order is the maximum possible in the corresponding general linear group. A special case is proved using some recent results on the probability that a pair of polynomials with coefficients in a finite field is coprime. Connection with an older problem of Niederreiter about the number of splitting subspaces of a given dimension are outlined and an asymptotic version of the conjectural formula is established. Some applications to the enumeration of nonsingular Toeplitz matrices of a given size over a finite field are also discussed.

Note on cubature formulae and designs obtained from group orbits
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 64 (2012) 1359-1377 • View Publication • BIB
In 1960, Sobolev proved that for a finite reflection group G, a G-invariant cubature formula is of degree t if and only if it is exact for all G-invariant polynomials of degree at most t. In this paper, we find some observations on invariant cubature formulas and Euclidean designs in connection with the Sobolev theorem. First, we give an alternative proof of theorems by Xu (1998) on necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of cubature formulas with some strong symmetry. The new proof is shorter and simpler compared to the original one by Xu, and moreover gives a general interpretation of the analytically-written conditions of Xu's theorems. Second, we extend a theorem by Neumaier and Seidel (1988) on Euclidean designs to invariant Euclidean designs, and thereby classify tight Euclidean designs obtained from unions of the orbits of the corner vectors. This result generalizes a theorem of Bajnok (2007) which classifies tight Euclidean designs invariant under the Weyl group of type B to other finite reflection groups.

Spin Kostka polynomials
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 37(2013), 117-138 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a spin analogue of Kostka polynomials and show that these polynomials enjoy favorable properties parallel to the Kostka polynomials. Further connections of spin Kostka polynomials with representation theory are established.

On certain arithmetic properties of Stern polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove several theorems concerning arithmetic properties of Stern polynomials defined in the following way: $B_{0}(t)=0, B_{1}(t)=1, B_{2n}(t)=tB_{n}(t)$, and $B_{2n+1}(t)=B_{n}(t)+B_{n+1}(t)$. We study also the sequence $e(n)=\op{deg}_{t}B_{n}(t)$ and give various of its properties.

Arithmetic properties of the sequence of degrees of Stern polynomials and related results
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $B_{n}(t)$ be a $n$-th Stern polynomial and let $e(n)=\op{deg}B_{n}(t)$ be its degree. In this note we continue our study started in \cite{Ul} of the arithmetic properties of the sequence of Stern polynomials and the sequence $\{e(n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. We also study the sequence $d(n)=\op{ord}_{t=0}B_{n}(t)$. Among other things we prove that $d(n)=ν(n)$, where $ν(n)$ is the maximal power of 2 which dividies the number $n$. We also count the number of the solutions of the equations $e(m)=i$ and $e(m)-d(m)=i$ in the interval $[1,2^{n}]$. We also obtain an interesting closed expression for a certain sum involving Stern polynomials.

Ehrhart series for Connected Simple Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart ring of the edge polytope $\mathcal{P}_G$ for a connected simple graph $G$ is known to coincide with the edge ring of the same graph if $G$ satisfies the odd cycle condition. This paper gives for a graph which does not satisfy the condition, a generating set of the defining ideal of the Ehrhart ring of the edge polytope, described by combinatorial information of the graph. From this result, two factoring properties of the Ehrhart series are obtained; the first one factors out bipartite biconnected components, and the second one factors out a even cycle which shares only one edge with other part of the graph. As an application of the factoring properties, the root distribution of Ehrhart polynomials for bipartite polygon trees is determined.

A Markov chain on the symmetric group which is Schubert positive?
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a multivariate Markov chain on the symmetric group with remarkable enumerative properties. We conjecture that the stationary distribution of this Markov chain can be expressed in terms of positive sums of Schubert polynomials. This Markov chain is a multivariate generalization of a Markov chain introduced by the first author in the study of random affine Weyl group elements.

Some combinatorial aspects of quantum field theory
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B65g (2012) • Search Publication
In this short survey we present the appearance of some combinatorial notions in quantum field theory. We first focus on topological graph polynomials (the Tutte polynomial and its multivariate version) and their relation with the parametric representation of the commutative $Φ^4$ field theory. We then generalize this to ribbon graphs and present the relation of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial with the parametric representation of some $Φ^4$ field theory on the non-commutative Moyal space. We also review the rôle played by the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra as the combinatorial backbone of the renormalization process in field theories. We then show how this generalizes to the scalar $Φ^4$ field theory implemented on the non-commutative Moyal space. Finally, some perspectives for the further generalization of these tools to quantum gravity tensor models are briefly sketched.
Algebraic Decoding of Negacyclic Codes Over Z_4
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we investigate Berlekamp's negacyclic codes and discover that these codes, when considered over the integers modulo 4, do not suffer any of the restrictions on the minimum distance observed in Berlekamp's original papers. The codes considered here have minimim Lee distance at least 2t+1, where the generator polynomial of the code has roots z,z^3,...,z^{2t+1} for a primitive 2nth root of unity z in a Galois extension of Z4. No restriction on t is imposed. We present an algebraic decoding algorithm for this class of codes that corrects any error pattern of Lee weight at most t. Our treatment uses Grobner bases and the decoding complexity is quadratic in t.
