Extremal bounds for pattern avoidance in multidimensional 0-1 matrices
Published in Discrete Mathematics 348 (2025) 114303 published online • View Publication • BIB
A 0-1 matrix $M$ contains another 0-1 matrix $P$ if some submatrix of $M$ can be turned into $P$ by changing any number of $1$-entries to $0$-entries. $M$ is $\mathcal{P}$-saturated where $\mathcal{P}$ is a family of 0-1 matrices if $M$ avoids every element of $\mathcal{P}$ and changing any $0$-entry of $M$ to a $1$-entry introduces a copy of some element of $\mathcal{P}$. The extremal function $\operatorname{ex}(n,\mathcal{P})$ and saturation function $\operatorname{sat}(n,\mathcal{P})$ are the maximum and minimum possible weight of an $n\times n$ $\mathcal{P}$-saturated 0-1 matrix, respectively, and the semisaturation function $\operatorname{ssat}(n,P)$ is the minimum possible weight of an $n\times n$ $\mathcal{P}$-semisaturated 0-1 matrix $M$, i.e., changing any $0$-entry in $M$ to a $1$-entry introduces a new copy of some element of $\mathcal{P}$. We give upper bounds on parameters of minimally non-$O(n^{d-1})$ $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices, generalized from minimally nonlinear 0-1 matrices in two dimensions, and we show the existence of infinitely many minimally non-$O(n^{d-1})$ $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices with all dimensions of length greater than $1$. For any positive integers $k,d$ and integer $r\in[0,d-1]$, we construct a family of $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices with both extremal function and saturation function exactly $kn^r$ for sufficiently large $n$. We show that no family of $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices has saturation function strictly between $O(1)$ and $Θ(n)$ and we construct a family of $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices with bounded saturation function and extremal function $Ω(n^{d-ε})$ for any $ε>0$. Up to a constant multiplicative factor, we fully settle the problem of characterizing the semisaturation function of families of $d$-dimensional 0-1 matrices, which we prove to always be $Θ(n^r)$ for some integer $r\in[0,d-1]$.

Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. VI. Binary trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we propose a notion of pattern avoidance in binary trees that generalizes the avoidance of contiguous tree patterns studied by Rowland and non-contiguous tree patterns studied by Dairyko, Pudwell, Tyner, and Wynn. Specifically, we propose algorithms for generating different classes of binary trees that are characterized by avoiding one or more of these generalized patterns. This is achieved by applying the recent Hartung-Hoang-Mütze-Williams generation framework, by encoding binary trees via permutations. In particular, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between tree patterns and certain mesh permutation patterns. We also conduct a systematic investigation of all tree patterns on at most 5 vertices, and we establish bijections between pattern-avoiding binary trees and other combinatorial objects, in particular pattern-avoiding lattice paths and set partitions.
Pattern-avoiding stabilized-interval-free permutations
Published in Discrete Math. 348, no. 3, 2025, 114329 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study pattern avoidance for stabilized-interval-free (SIF) permutations. These permutations are contained in the set of indecomposable permutations and in the set of derangements. We enumerate pattern-avoiding SIF permutations for classical and pairs of patterns of size 3. In particular, for the patterns 123 and 231, we rely on combinatorial arguments and the fixed-point distribution of general permutations avoiding these patterns. We briefly discuss 123-avoiding permutations with two fixed points and offer a conjecture for their enumeration by the distance between their fixed points. For the pattern 231, we also give a direct argument that uses a bijection to ordered forests.

Modified ascent sequences and Bell numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2011, Duncan and Steingrímsson conjectured that modified ascent sequences avoiding any of the patterns 212, 1212, 2132, 2213, 2231 and 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers. Furthermore, the distribution of the number of ascents is the reverse of the distribution of blocks on set partitions. We solve the conjecture for all the patterns except 2321. We describe the corresponding sets of Fishburn permutations by pattern avoidance, and leave some open questions for future work.

Dyck paths, binary words, and Grassmannian permutations avoiding an increasing pattern
Published • View Publication • BIB
A permutation is called Grassmannian if it has at most one descent. The study of pattern avoidance in such permutations was initiated by Gil and Tomasko in 2021. We continue this work by studying Grassmannian permutations that avoid an increasing pattern. In particular, we count the Grassmannian permutations of size $m$ avoiding the identity permutation of size $k$, thus solving a conjecture made by Weiner. We also refine our counts to special classes such as odd Grassmannian permutations and Grassmannian involutions. We prove most of our results by relating Grassmannian permutations to Dyck paths and binary words.

A natural bijection for contiguous pattern avoidance in words
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 347 (3), 2024 • View Publication • BIB
Two words $p$ and $q$ are avoided by the same number of length-$n$ words, for all $n$, precisely when $p$ and $q$ have the same set of border lengths. Previous proofs of this theorem use generating functions but do not provide an explicit bijection. We give a bijective proof for all pairs $p, q$ that have the same set of proper borders, establishing a natural bijection from the set of words avoiding $p$ to the set of words avoiding $q$.

$(p,q,t)$-Catalan continued fractions, gamma expansions and pattern avoidances
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type A by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the corresponding expansions could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(321)$ by various descent statistics. Moreover, we introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type B by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the Taylor coefficients and their $γ$-coefficients could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(3124, 4123, 3142, 4132)$ by various descent statistics. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of bijections from permutation patterns to labeled Motzkin paths and modified Foata-Strehl action.

Tight Lower Bound for Pattern Avoidance Schur-Positivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a set of permutations (patterns) $Π$ in $S_k$, consider the set of all permutations in $S_n$ that avoid all patterns in $Π$. An important problem in current algebraic combinatorics is to find pattern sets $Π$ such that the corresponding quasi-symmetric function is symmetric for all $n$. Recently, Bloom and Sagan proved that for any $k \ge 4$, the size of such $Π$ must be at least $3$ unless $Π\subseteq \{[1, 2, \dots, k],\; [k, \dots, 1]\}$, and asked for a general lower bound. We prove that the minimal size of such $Π$ is exactly $k - 1$. The proof applies a new generalization of a theorem of Bose from extremal combinatorics. This generalization is proved using the multilinear polynomial approach of Alon, Babai and Suzuki to the extension by Ray-Chaudhuri and Wilson to Bose's theorem.

Burstein's permutation conjecture, Hong and Li's inversion sequence conjecture, and restricted Eulerian distributions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Hong and Li launched a systematic study of length-four pattern avoidance in inversion sequences, and in particular, they conjectured that the number of $0021$-avoiding inversion sequences can be enumerated by the OEIS entry A218225. Meanwhile, Burstein suggested that the same sequence might also count three sets of pattern restricted permutations. The objective of this paper is not only a confirmation of Hong and Li's conjecture and Burstein's first conjecture, but also two more delicate generating function identities with the $\mathsf{ides}$ statistic concerned in the restricted permutation case, and the $\mathsf{asc}$ statistic concerned in the restricted inversion sequence case, which yield a new equidistribution result.

Pattern Avoidance in Parking Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we view parking functions viewed as labeled Dyck paths in order to study a notion of pattern avoidance first introduced by Remmel and Qiu. In particular we enumerate the parking functions avoiding any set of two or more patterns of length 3, and we obtain a number of well-known combinatorial sequences as a result. Along the way, we find bijections between specific sets of pattern-avoiding parking functions and a number of combinatorial objects such as partitions of polygons and trees with certain restrictions.

On $d$-permutations and Pattern Avoidance Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Multidimensional permutations, or $d$-permutations, are represented by their diagrams on $[n]^d$ such that there exists exactly one point per hyperplane $x_i$ that satisfies $x_i= j$ for $i \in [d]$ and $j \in [n]$. Bonichon and Morel previously enumerated $3$-permutations avoiding small patterns, and we extend their results by first proving four conjectures, which exhaustively enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding any two fixed patterns of size $3$. We further provide a enumerative result relating $3$-permutation avoidance classes with their respective recurrence relations. In particular, we show a recurrence relation for $3$-permutations avoiding the patterns $132$ and $213$, which contributes a new sequence to the OEIS database. We then extend our results to completely enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding three patterns of size $3$.

Pattern-avoiding even and odd Grassmannian permutations
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 86 (2023), 187-205 • Search Publication
In this paper, we investigate pattern avoidance of parity restricted (even or odd) Grassmannian permutations for patterns of sizes 3 and 4. We use a combination of direct counting and bijective techniques to provide recurrence relations, closed formulas, and generating functions for their corresponding enumerating sequences. In addition, we establish some connections to Dyck paths, directed multigraphs, weak compositions, and certain integer partitions.

Criteria for smoothness of Positroid varieties via pattern avoidance, Johnson graphs, and spirographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer, and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. This allows us to give two formulas for counting the number of smooth positroids along with two $q$-analogs. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

On automorphisms of undirected Bruhat graphs
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, Volume 303 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The (directed) Bruhat graph $\hatΓ(u,v)$ has the elements of the Bruhat interval $[u,v]$ as vertices, with directed edges given by multiplication by a reflection. Famously, $\hatΓ(e,v)$ is regular if and only if the Schubert variety $X_v$ is smooth, and this condition on $v$ is characterized by pattern avoidance. In this work, we classify when the undirected Bruhat graph $Γ(e,v)$ is vertex-transitive; surprisingly this class of permutations is also characterized by pattern avoidance and sits nicely between the classes of smooth permutations and self-dual permutations. This leads us to a general investigation of automorphisms of $Γ(u,v)$ in the course of which we show that special matchings, which originally appeared in the theory Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, can be characterized as certain $Γ(u,v)$-automorphisms which are conjecturally sufficient to generate the orbit of $e$ under $Aut(Γ(e,v))$.

Baxter $d$-permutations and other pattern avoiding classes
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 25: Article 22.8.3, 2022 • Search Publication
A permutation of size $n$ can be identified to its diagram in which there is exactly one point per row and column in the grid $[n]^2$. In this paper we consider multidimensional permutations (or $d$-permutations), which are identified to their diagrams on the grid $[n]^d$ in which there is exactly one point per hyperplane $x_i=j$ for $i\in[d]$ and $j\in[n]$. We first investigate exhaustively all small pattern avoiding classes. We provide some bijection to enumerate some of these classes and we propose some conjectures for others. We then give a generalization of well-studied Baxter permutations into this multidimensional setting. In addition, we provide a vincular pattern avoidance characterization of Baxter $d$-permutations.
Combinatorial Exploration: An algorithmic framework for enumeration
Published • View Publication • BIB
Combinatorial Exploration is a new domain-agnostic algorithmic framework to automatically and rigorously study the structure of combinatorial objects and derive their counting sequences and generating functions. We describe how it works and provide an open-source Python implementation. As a prerequisite, we build up a new theoretical foundation for combinatorial decomposition strategies and combinatorial specifications. We then apply Combinatorial Exploration to the domain of permutation patterns, to great effect. We rederive hundreds of results in the literature in a uniform manner and prove many new ones. These results can be found in a new public database, the Permutation Pattern Avoidance Library (PermPAL) at https://permpal.com. Finally, we give three additional proofs-of-concept, showing examples of how Combinatorial Exploration can prove results in the domains of alternating sign matrices, polyominoes, and set partitions.
Degenerations and multiplicity-free formulas for products of $ψ$ and $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider products of $ψ$ classes and products of $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$. For each product, we construct a flat family of subschemes of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ whose general fiber is a complete intersection representing the product, and whose special fiber is a generically reduced union of boundary strata. Our construction is built up inductively as a sequence of one-parameter degenerations, using an explicit parametrized collection of hyperplane sections. Combinatorially, our construction expresses each product as a positive, multiplicity-free sum of classes of boundary strata. These are given by a combinatorial algorithm on trees we call 'slide labeling'. As a corollary, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the $κ$ classes in terms of boundary strata. For degree-$n$ products of $ω$ classes, the special fiber is a finite reduced union of (boundary) points, and its cardinality is one of the multidegrees of the corresponding embedding $Ω_n: \overline{M}_{0,n+3}\to \mathbb{P}^1\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$. In the case of the product $ω_1\cdots ω_n$, these points exhibit a connection to permutation pattern avoidance. Finally, we show that in certain cases, a prior interpretation of the multidegrees via tournaments can also be obtained by degenerations.
