Fractional partitions and conjectures of Chern-Fu-Tang and Heim-Neuhauser

Many papers have studied inequalities for partition functions. Recently, a number of papers have considered mixtures between additive and multiplicative behavior in such inequalities. In particular, Chern-Fu-Tang and Heim-Neuhauser gave conjectures on inequalities for coefficients of powers of the generating partition function. These conjectures were posed in the context of colored partitions and the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula. Here, we study the precise size of differences of products of two such coefficients. This allows us to prove the Chern-Fu-Tang conjecture and to show the Heim-Neuhauser conjecture in a certain range. The explicit error terms provided will also be useful in the future study of partition inequalities. These are laid out in a user-friendly way for the researcher in combinatorics interested in such analytic questions.
Generalization of five q-series identities of Ramanujan and unexplored weighted partition identities

Ramanujan recorded five interesting q-series identities in a section that is not as systematically arranged as the other chapters of his second notebook. These five identities do not seem to have acquired enough attention. Recently, Dixit and the third author found a one-variable generalization of one of the aforementioned five identities. From their generalized identity, they were able to derive the last three of these q-series identities, but didn't establish the first two. In the present article, we derive a one-variable generalization of the main identity of Dixit and the third author from which we successfully deduce all the five q-series identities of Ramanujan. In addition to this, we also establish a few interesting weighted partition identities from our generalized identity. In the mid 1980's, Bressoud and Subbarao found an interesting identity connecting the generalized divisor function with a weighted partition function, which they proved by means of a purely combinatorial argument. Quite surprisingly, we found an analytic proof for a generalization of the identity of Bressoud and Subbarao, starting from the fourth identity of the aforementioned five q-series identities of Ramanujan.

We prove that the isomonodromic tau function on a torus with Fuchsian singularities and generic monodromies in $GL(N,\mathbb{C})$ can be written in terms of a Fredholm determinant of Cauchy-Plemelj operators. We further show that the minor expansion of this Fredholm determinant is described by a series labeled by charged partitions. As an example, we show that in the case of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ this combinatorial expression takes the form of a dual Nekrasov-Okounkov partition function, or equivalently of a free fermion conformal block on the torus. Based on these results, we also propose a definition of the tau function of the Riemann-Hilbert problem on a torus with generic jump on the A-cycle.
Correlation Decay and the Absence of Zeros Property of Partition Functions

Absence of (complex) zeros property is at the heart of the interpolation method developed by Barvinok \cite{barvinok2017combinatorics} for designing deterministic approximation algorithms for various graph counting and computing partition functions problems. Earlier methods for solving the same problem include the one based on the correlation decay property. Remarkably, the classes of graphs for which the two methods apply sometimes coincide or nearly coincide. In this paper we show that this is more than just a coincidence. We establish that if the interpolation method is valid for a family of graphs satisfying the self-reducibility property, then this family exhibits a form of correlation decay property which is asymptotic Strong Spatial Mixing (SSM) at distances $ω(\log n)$, where $n$ is the number of nodes of the graph. This applies in particular to amenable graphs, such as graphs which are finite subsets of lattices.
Our proof is based on a certain graph polynomial representation of the associated partition function. This representation is at the heart of the design of the polynomial time algorithms underlying the interpolation method itself. We conjecture that our result holds for all, and not just amenable graphs.
Belief Propagation on the random $k$-SAT model

Corroborating a prediction from statistical physics, we prove that the Belief Propagation message passing algorithm approximates the partition function of the random $k$-SAT model well for all clause/variable densities and all inverse temperatures for which a modest absence of long-range correlations condition is satisfied. This condition is known as "replica symmetry" in physics language. From this result we deduce that a replica symmetry breaking phase transition occurs in the random $k$-SAT model at low temperature for clause/variable densities below but close to the satisfiability threshold.
The generalized Frobenius problem via restricted partition functions

Given relatively prime positive integers, $a_1,\ldots,a_n$, the Frobenius number is the largest integer with no representations of the form $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n$ with nonnegative integers $x_i$. This classical value has recently been generalized: given a nonnegative integer $k$, what is the largest integer with at most $k$ such representations? Other classical values can be generalized too: for example, how many nonnegative integers are representable in at most $k$ ways? For sufficiently large $k$, we give formulas for these values by understanding the level sets of the restricted partition function (the function $f(t)$ giving the number of representations of $t$). Furthermore, we give the full asymptotics of all of these values, as well as reprove formulas for some special cases (such as the $n=2$ case and a certain extremal family from the literature). Finally, we obtain the first two leading terms of the restricted partition function as a so-called quasi-polynomial.
Topological Recursion for the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots

We prove that topological recursion applied to the spectral curve of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots reproduces the n-point functions of a particular partition function called the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. This generalizes and refines the results of Brini-Eynard-Marino and Borot-Eynard-Orantin.
We also discuss how the statement of spectral curve topological recursion in this case fits into the program of Alexandrov-Chapuy-Eynard-Harnad of establishing the topological recursion for general weighted double Hurwitz numbers partition functions (a.k.a. KP tau-functions of hypergeometric type).
Parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients

We investigate the parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, extensively examining the case of $m$-regular partitions. Our theorems concern the density of their odd values, in particular establishing lacunarity modulo 2 for specified coefficients; self-similarities modulo 2; and infinite families of congruences in arithmetic progressions. For all $m \leq 28$, we either establish new results of these types where none were known, extend previous ones, or conjecture that such results are impossible.
All of our work is consistent with a new, overarching conjecture that we present for arbitrary eta-quotients, greatly extending Parkin-Shanks' classical conjecture for the partition function. We pose several other open questions throughout the paper, and conclude by suggesting a list of specific research directions for future investigations in this area.
Symmetric polynomials associated with numerical semigroups
We study a new kind of symmetric polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m) of degree n in m real variables, which have arisen in the theory of numerical semigroups. We establish their basic properties and find their representation through the power sums E_k=\sum_{j=1}^m x_j^k. We observe a visual similarity between normalized polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m)/χ_m, where χ_m=\prod_{j=1}^m x_j, and a polynomial part of a partition function W(s,{d_1,...,d_m}), which gives a number of partitions of s\ge 0 into m positive integers d_j, and put forward a conjecture about their relationship.
Quantum stabilizer codes, lattices, and CFTs

There is a rich connection between classical error-correcting codes, Euclidean lattices, and chiral conformal field theories. Here we show that quantum error-correcting codes, those of the stabilizer type, are related to Lorentzian lattices and non-chiral CFTs. More specifically, real self-dual stabilizer codes can be associated with even self-dual Lorentzian lattices, and thus define Narain CFTs. We dub the resulting theories code CFTs and study their properties. T-duality transformations of a code CFT, at the level of the underlying code, reduce to code equivalences. By means of such equivalences, any stabilizer code can be reduced to a graph code. We can therefore represent code CFTs by graphs. We study code CFTs with small central charge $c=n\leq 12$, and find many interesting examples. Among them is a non-chiral $E_8$ theory, which is based on the root lattice of $E_8$ understood as an even self-dual Lorentzian lattice. By analyzing all graphs with $n\leq 8$ nodes we find many pairs and triples of physically distinct isospectral theories. We also construct numerous modular invariant functions satisfying all the basic properties expected of the CFT partition function, yet which are not partition functions of any known CFTs. We consider the ensemble average over all code theories, calculate the corresponding partition function, and discuss its possible holographic interpretation. The paper is written in a self-contained manner, and includes an extensive pedagogical introduction and many explicit examples.
Forest expansion of two-body partition functions for sparse interaction graphs

We study tree approximations to classical two-body partition functions on sparse and loopy graphs via the Brydges-Kennedy-Abdessalam-Rivasseau forest expansion. We show that for sparse graphs (with large cycles), the partition function above a certain temperature $T^*$ can be approximated by a graph polynomial expansion over forests of the interaction graph. Within this "forest phase", we show that the approximation can be written in terms of a reference tree $\mathcal T$ on the interaction graph, with corrections due to cycles. From this point of view, this implies that high-temperature models are easy to solve on sparse graphs, as one can evaluate the partition function using belief propagation. We also show that there exists a high- and low-temperature regime, in which $\mathcal T$ can be obtained via a maximal spanning tree algorithm on a (given) weighted graph. We study the algebra of these corrections and provide first- and second-order approximation to the tree Ansatz, and give explicit examples for the first-order approximation.

We derive a new explicit formula in terms of sums over graphs for the $n$-point correlation functions of general formal weighted double Hurwitz numbers coming from the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type (also known as Orlov-Scherbin partition functions). Notably, we use the change of variables suggested by the associated spectral curve, and our formula turns out to be a polynomial expression in a certain small set of formal functions defined on the spectral curve.
On partition polynomials and partition functions
In this paper we revisit the work of E.T. Bell concerning partition polynomials in order to introduce the reciprocal partition polynomials. We give their explicit formulas and apply the result to compute closed formulae for some well-known partition functions.
Refined Cauchy identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions

Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter equation.
We rewrite our Izergin-Korepin type determinant in a different form which includes one of the sets of variables in a completely symmetric way. This determinantal identity might be of independent interest, and also allows to directly link the spin Hall-Littlewood rational functions with (the Hall-Littlewood particular case of) the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In a different direction, a Schur expansion of our Izergin-Korepin type determinant yields a deformation of Schur symmetric polynomials.
In the spin-$\frac12$ specialization, our refined Cauchy identity leads to a summation identity for eigenfunctions of the ASEP (Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), a celebrated stochastic interacting particle system in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. This produces explicit integral formulas for certain multitime probabilities in ASEP.
A Bijection Between Two Different Classes of Partitions Enumerated by $p_ν(n)$
In this paper, we give a purely bijective proof that two different partition classes that are both combinatorial interpretations of the partition function $p_ν(n)$, a partition function related to the third order mock theta function $ν(q)$, are equinumerous. In doing so, we give a partial solution to a combinatorial problem proposed in a paper by Andrews.
New partition function recurrences
We present Euler-type recurrence relations for some partition functions. Some of our results provide new recurrences for the number of unrestricted partitions of $n$, denote by $p(n)$. Others establish recurrences for partition functions not yet considered.

We construct an integrable colored six-vertex model whose partition function is a double Grothendieck polynomial. This gives an integrable systems interpretation of bumpless pipe dreams and recent results of Weigandt [arXiv:2003.07342] relating double Grothendieck polynomias with bumpless pipe dreams. For vexillary permutations, we then construct a new model that we call the semidual version model. We use our semidual model and the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai to given a new proof that double Grothendieck polynomials for vexillary permutations are equal to flagged factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Taking the stable limit of double Grothendieck polynomials, we obtain a new proof that the stable limit is a factorial Grothendieck polynomial as defined by McNamara. The states of our semidual model naturally correspond to families of nonintersecting lattice paths, where we can then use the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma to give a determinant formula for double Schubert polynomials corresponding to vexillary permutations.
Frozen Pipes: Lattice Models for Grothendieck Polynomials

We introduce families of two-parameter multivariate polynomials indexed by pairs of partitions $v,w$ -- biaxial double $(β,q)$-Grothendieck polynomials -- which specialize at $q=0$ and $v=1$ to double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials from torus-equivariant connective K-theory. Initially defined recursively via divided difference operators, our main result is that these new polynomials arise as partition functions of solvable lattice models. Moreover, the associated quantum group of the solvable model for polynomials in $n$ pairs of variables is a Drinfeld twist of the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1})$ $R$-matrix. By leveraging the resulting Yang-Baxter equations of the lattice model, we show that these polynomials simultaneously generalize double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials and dual double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials for arbitrary permutations. We then use properties of the model and Yang-Baxter equations to reprove Fomin-Kirillov's Cauchy identity for $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, generalize it to a new Cauchy identity for biaxial double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, and prove a new branching rule for double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

We study four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory in the presence of surface and point-like defects (blowups) and propose an identity relating partition functions at different values of $Ω$-deformation parameters $({\varepsilon}_{1}, {\varepsilon}_{2})$. As a consequence, we obtain the formula conjectured in 2012 by O$.$Gamayun, N$.$Iorgov, and O$.$Lysovyy, relating the tau-function $τ_{PVI}$ to $c=1$ conformal blocks of Liouville theory and propose its generalization for the case of Garnier-Schlesinger system. To this end we clarify the notion of the quasiclassical tau-function $τ_{PVI}$ of Painlevé VI and its generalizations. We also make some remarks about the sphere partition functions, the boundary operator product expansion in the ${\mathcal{N}}=(4,4)$ sigma models related to four dimensional ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ theories on toric manifolds, discuss crossed instantons on conifolds, elucidate some aspects of the BPZ/KZ correspondence, and applications to quantization.

We provide the exact solution of several variants of simple models of the zipping transition of two bound polymers, such as occurs in DNA/RNA, in two and three dimensions using pairs of directed lattice paths. In three dimensions the solutions are written in terms of complete elliptic integrals. We analyse the phase transition associated with each model giving the scaling of the partition function. We also extend the models to include a pulling force between one end of the pair of paths, which competes with the attractive monomer-monomer interactions between the polymers.
