Weighted locally gentle quivers and Cartan matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the class of weighted locally gentle quivers. This naturally extends the class of gentle quivers and gentle algebras, which have been intensively studied in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, to a wider class of potentially infinite-dimensional algebras. Weights on the arrows of these quivers lead to gradings on the corresponding algebras. For the natural grading by path lengths, any locally gentle algebra is a Koszul algebra. Our main result is a general combinatorial formula for the determinant of the weighted Cartan matrix of a weighted locally gentle quiver. This determinant is invariant under graded derived equivalences of the corresponding algebras. We show that this weighted Cartan determinant is a rational function which is completely determined by the combinatorics of the quiver, more precisely by the number and the weight of certain oriented cycles. This leads to combinatorial invariants of the graded derived categories of graded locally gentle algebras.

BGP-reflection functors and cluster combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define Bernstein-Gelfand-Ponomarev reflection functors in the cluster categories of hereditary algebras. They are triangle equivalences which provide a natural quiver realization of the "truncated simple reflections" on the set of almost positive roots $Φ_{\ge -1}$ associated to a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra. Combining with the tilting theory in cluster categories developed in [4], we give a unified interpretation via quiver representations for the generalized associahedra associated to the root systems of all Dynkin types (a simply-laced or non-simply-laced). This confirms the conjecture 9.1 in [4] in all Dynkin types.

A Mid-point Theorem for the U type shape of functions
Published in Bulletin of Informatics & Cybernetics (2013), Volume 45, no.8, pp: 37-44 • View Publication • BIB
A mid-point theorem is proved in an elementary way for the U type shape of functions that arise out of exponential quadratic functions. These results are inspired from epidemic patterns and growth over a time period. Key words: natural numbers mapping, mean value theorem.

Colourings of the Cartesian Product of Graphs and Multiplicative Sidon Sets
Published in Combinatorica 29.4:449-466, 2009 • Search Publication
Let $F$ be a family of connected bipartite graphs, each with at least three vertices. A proper vertex colouring of a graph $G$ with no bichromatic subgraph in $F$ is $\F$-free. The $F$-free chromatic number $χ(G,F)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colours in an $F$-free colouring of $G$. For appropriate choices of $F$, several well-known types of colourings fit into this framework, including acyclic colourings, star colourings, and distance-2 colourings. This paper studies $F$-free colourings of the cartesian product of graphs. Let $H$ be the cartesian product of the graphs $G_1,G_2,...,G_d$. Our main result establishes an upper bound on the $F$-free chromatic number of $H$ in terms of the maximum $F$-free chromatic number of the $G_i$ and the following number-theoretic concept. A set $S$ of natural numbers is $k$-multiplicative Sidon if $ax=by$ implies $a=b$ and $x=y$ whenever $x,y\in S$ and $1\leq a,b\leq k$. Suppose that $χ(G_i,F)\leq k$ and $S$ is a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set of cardinality $d$. We prove that $χ(H,F) \leq 1+2k\cdot\max S$. We then prove that the maximum density of a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set is $Θ(1/\log k)$. It follows that $χ(H,F) \leq O(dk\log k)$. We illustrate the method with numerous examples, some of which generalise or improve upon existing results in the literature.

Hopf algebras and dendriform structures arising from parking functions
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae 193 (2007), 189-241 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3. These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco. Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.
Planar coincidences for N-fold symmetry
Published in J. Math. Phys. 37 (1996) 1029-1058 • View Publication • BIB
The coincidence problem for planar patterns with $N$-fold symmetry is considered. For the N-fold symmetric module with $N<46$, all isometries of the plane are classified that result in coincidences of finite index. This is done by reformulating the problem in terms of algebraic number fields and using prime factorization. The more complicated case $N \ge 46$ is briefly discussed and N=46 is described explicitly. The results of the coincidence problem also solve the problem of colour lattices in two dimensions and its natural generalization to colour modules.

Combinatorics of normal sequences of braids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many natural counting problems arise in connection with the normal form of braids--and seem to have never been considered so far. Here we solve some of them by analysing the normality condition in terms of the associated permutations, their descents and the corresponding partitions. A number of different induction schemes appear in that framework.

A sharp diameter bound for unipotent groups of classical type over Z/pZ
Published • View Publication • BIB
The unipotent subgroup of a finite group of Lie type over a prime field Z/pZ comes equipped with a natural set of generators; the properties of the Cayley graph associated to this set of generators have been much studied. In the present paper, we show that the diameter of this Cayley graph is bounded above and below by constant multiples of np + n^2 log p, where n is the rank of the associated Lie group. This generalizes a result of the first author, which treated the case of SL_n(Z/pZ). (Keywords: diameter, Cayley graph, finite groups of Lie type. AMS classification: 20G40, 05C25)

Parking functions and triangulation of the associahedron

We show that a minimal triangulation of the associahedron (Stasheff polytope) of dimension n is made of (n+1)^{n-1} simplices. We construct a natural bijection with the set of parking functions from a new interpretation of parking functions in terms of shuffles.

On bounds for some graph invariants
Published in Boletin de la Sociedad Matematica Mexicana (3) Vol. 16 (2010) 73-94 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a graph without isolated vertices and let $α(G)$ be its stability number and $τ(G)$ its covering number. The {\it $α_{v}$-cover} number of a graph, denoted by $α_{v}(G)$, is the maximum natural number $m$ such that every vertex of $G$ belongs to a maximal independent set with at least $m$ vertices. In the first part of this paper we prove that $α(G)\leq τ(G)[1+α(G)-α_{v}(G)]$. We also discuss some conjectures analogous to this theorem. In the second part we give a lower bound for the number of edges of a graph $G$ as a function of the stability number $α(G)$, the covering number $τ(G)$ and the number of connected components $c(G)$ of $G$. Namely, let $α$ and $τ$ be two natural numbers and let $$ Γ(α,τ)= \min{\sum_{i=1}^α\bin{z_i}{2} | z_1+...+z_α= α+τ{and} z_i \geq 0 \forall i=1,..., α}. $$ Then if $G$ is any graph, we have: $$ |E(G)| \geq α(G)-c(G)+ Γ(α(G), τ(G)). $$

Stationary or static space-times and Young tableaux
Published in J.Phys.Conf.Ser.30:152-162,2006 • View Publication • BIB
Algebraic curvature tensors possess generators which can be formed from symmetric or alternating tensors S, A or tensors θwith an irreducible (2,1)-symmetry. In differential geometry examples of curvature formulas are known which contain generators on the basis of S or A realized by differentiable tensor fields in a natural way. We show that certain curvature formulas for stationary or static space-times contain such differentiable realizations of generators based on θ. The tensor θis connected with the timelike Killing vector field of the space-time. θlies in a special symmetry class from the infinite family of irreducible (2,1)-symmetry classes. We determine characteristics of this class. In particular, this class allows a maximal reduction of the length of the curvature formulas. We use a projection formalism by Vladimirov, Young symmetrizers and Littlewood-Richardson products. Computer calculations were carried out by means of the packages Ricci and PERMS.

Schreier Sets in Ramsey Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that Ramsey theory, a domain presently conceived to guarantee the existence of large homogeneous sets for partitions on k-tuples of words (for every natural number k) over a finite alphabet, can be extended to one for partitions on Schreier-type sets of words (of every countable ordinal). Indeed, we establish an extension of the partition theorem of Carlson about words and of the (more general) partition theorem of Furstenberg-Katznelson about combinatorial subspaces of the set of words (generating from k-tuples of words for any fixed natural number k) into a partition theorem about combinatorial subspaces (generating from Schreier-type sets of words of order any fixed countable ordinal). Furthermore, as a result we obtain a strengthening of Carlson's infinitary Nash-Williams type (and Ellentuck type) partition theorem about infinite sequences of variable words into a theorem, in which an infinite sequence of variable words and a binary partition of all the finite sequences of words, one of whose components is, in addition, a tree, are assumed, concluding that all the Schreier-type finite reductions of an infinite reduction of the given sequence have a behavior determined by the Cantor-Bendixson ordinal index of the tree-component of the partition, falling in the tree-component above that index and in its complement below it.

Prefab posets` Whitney numbers
Published in Bull. Soc. Sci. Lett. Lodz, vol 60, (2005). 25-33 • Search Publication
We introduce a natural partial order in structurally natural finite subsets the cobweb prefabs sets recently constructed by the present author. Whitney numbers of the second kind of the corresponding subposet which constitute Stirling-like numbers` triangular array are then calculated and the explicit formula for them is provided. Next - in the second construction - we endow the set sums of prefabiants with such an another partial order that their their bell like numbers include fibonacci triad sequences introduced recently by the present author in order to extend famous relation between binomial newton coefficients and fibonacci numbers onto the infinity of their relatives among which there are also the fibonacci triad sequences and binomial-like coefficients (incidence coefficients included).

On Obtaining a Minimally-Valued Derangement in a Symmetric Cost Matrix
Let M be an n X n symmetric cost matrix. Assume that D is a derangement of edges in M, i.e., a set of point-disjoint cycles containing all of the n points of M.The modified Floyd-Warshall algorithm applied to ((D')^-1)A^- (where A is an asymmetric cost matrix containing D', a derangement)yielded a solution to the Assignment Problem in O((n^2)logn) running time. Here, applying a variation of the modified F-W algorithm to D^-1)M^-, we may possibly obtain a smaller-valued derangement than D consisting of entries in M. A minimally-valued derangement would be of great value as a good and natural lower bound for an optimal tour in M.

The Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and quasisymmetric functions in non-commutative variables are free and cofree
Published in J. of Algebra and its Applications (8)(2009), No 4, 581--600 • View Publication • BIB
We uncover the structure of the space of symmetric functions in non-commutative variables by showing that the underlined Hopf algebra is both free and co-free. We also introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in non-commutative variables and define the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of this space and show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree. In the process of looking for bases which generate the space we define orders on the set partitions and set compositions which allow us to define bases which have simple and natural rules for the product of basis elements.

Truncated Groebner fans and lattice ideals
We outline a generalization of the Groebner fan of a homogeneous ideal with maximal cells parametrizing truncated Groebner bases. This "truncated" Groebner fan is usually much smaller than the full Groebner fan and offers the natural framework for conversion between truncated Groebner bases. The generic Groebner walk generalizes naturally to this setting by using the Buchberger algorithm with truncation on facets. We specialize to the setting of lattice ideals. Here facets along the generic walk are given by unique (facet) binomials. This along with the representation of binomials as integer vectors give an especially simple version of the generic Groebner walk. Computational experience with the special Aardal-Lenstra integer programming knapsack problems is reported.
The Mathieu group $M_{12}$ and its pseudogroup extension $M_{13}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a construction of the Mathieu group $M_{12}$ using a game reminiscent of Loyd's ``15-puzzle''. The elements of $M_{12}$ are realized as permutations on~12 of the~13 points of the finite projective plane of order~3. There is a natural extension to a ``pseudogroup'' $M_{13}$ acting on all~13 points, which exhibits a limited form of sextuple transitivity. Another corollary of the construction is a metric, akin to that induced by a Cayley graph, on both $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$. We develop these results, and extend them to the double covers and automorphism groups of $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$, using the ternary Golay code and $12 \x 12$ Hadamard matrices. In addition, we use experimental data on the quasi-Cayley metric to gain some insight into the structure of these groups and pseudogroups.

On a Duality between Metrics and $Σ$-Proximities
Published in Automation and Remote Control 59 (1998) 608--612 • Search Publication
: In studies of discrete structures, functions are frequently used that express proximity, but are not metrics. We consider a class of such functions that is characterized by a normalization condition and an inequality that plays the same role as the triangle inequality does for metrics. We show that the introduced functions, named $Σ$-proximities, are in a definite sense dual to metrics: there exists a natural one-to-one correspondence between metrics and $Σ$-proximities defined on the same finite set; in contrast to metrics, $Σ$-proximities measure {\it comparative} proximity; the closer the objects, the greater the $Σ$-proximity; diagonal entries of the $Σ$-proximity matrix characterize the ``centrality'' of elements. The results are extended to arbitrary infinite sets.
