Mahonian Pairs

We introduce the notion of a Mahonian pair. Consider the set, P^*, of all words having the positive integers as alphabet. Given finite subsets S,T of P^*, we say that (S,T) is a Mahonian pair if the distribution of the major index, maj, over S is the same as the distribution of the inversion number, inv, over T. So the well-known fact that maj and inv are equidistributed over the symmetric group, S_n, can be expressed by saying that (S_n,S_n) is a Mahonian pair. We investigate various Mahonian pairs (S,T) with S different from T. Our principal tool is Foata's fundamental bijection f: P^* -> P^* since it has the property that maj w = inv f(w) for any word w. We consider various families of words associated with Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. We show that, when restricted to words in {1,2}^*, f transforms familiar statistics on words into natural statistics on integer partitions such as the size of the Durfee square. The Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the Catalan triangle, and various q-analogues also make an appearance. We generalize the definition of Mahonian pairs to infinite sets and use this as a tool to connect a partition bijection of Corteel-Savage-Venkatraman with the Greene-Kleitman decomposition of a Boolean algebra into symmetric chains. We close with comments about future work and open problems.

N-fold integer programming is a fundamental problem with a variety of natural applications in operations research and statistics. Moreover, it is universal and provides a new, variable-dimension, parametrization of all of integer programming. The fastest algorithm for $n$-fold integer programming predating the present article runs in time $O(n^{g(A)}L)$ with $L$ the binary length of the numerical part of the input and $g(A)$ the so-called Graver complexity of the bimatrix $A$ defining the system. In this article we provide a drastic improvement and establish an algorithm which runs in time $O(n^3 L)$ having cubic dependency on $n$ regardless of the bimatrix $A$. Our algorithm can be extended to separable convex piecewise affine objectives as well, and also to systems defined by bimatrices with variable entries. Moreover, it can be used to define a hierarchy of approximations for any integer programming problem.

We study the $\bG_a^M$ degenerations $\Fl^a_\la$ of the type $A$ flag varieties $\Fl_\la$. We describe these degenerations explicitly as subvarieties in the products of Grassmanians. We construct cell decompositions of $\Fl^a_\la$ and show that for complete flags the number of cells is equal to the normalized median Genocchi numbers $h_n$. This leads to a new combinatorial definition of the numbers $h_n$. We also compute the Poincar\' e polynomials of the complete degenerate flag varieties via a natural statistics on the set of Dellac's configurations, similar to the length statistics on the set of permutations. We thus obtain a natural $q$-version of the normalized median Genocchi numbers.

We demonstrate a natural bijection between a subclass of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) defined by a condition on the corresponding monotone triangle which we call the gapless condition and a subclass of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions defined by a similar condition on the corresponding fundamental domains or Magog triangles. We prove that, when restricted to permutations, this class of ASMs reduces to 312-avoiding permutations. This leads us to generalize pattern avoidance on permutations to a family of words associated to ASMs, which we call Gog words. We translate the gapless condition on monotone trangles into a pattern avoidance-like condition on Gog words associated. We estimate the number of gapless monotone triangles using a bijection with p-branchings.

We give a new fusion procedure for the Brauer algebra by showing that all primitive idempotents can be found by evaluating a rational function in several variables which has the form of a product of R-matrix type factors. In particular, this provides a new fusion procedure for the symmetric group involving an arbitrary parameter. The R-matrices are solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation associated with the classical Lie algebras g_N of types B, C and D. Moreover, we construct an evaluation homomorphism from a reflection equation algebra B(g_N) to U(g_N) and show that the fusion procedure provides an equivalence between natural tensor representations of B(g_N) with the corresponding evaluation modules.

We show how certain suitably modified N-modular diagrams of integer partitions provide a nice combinatorial interpretation for the general term of Zeilberger's KOH identity. This identity is the reformulation of O'Hara's famous proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian polynomial as a combinatorial identity. In particular, we determine, using different bijections, two main natural classes of modular diagrams of partitions with bounded parts and length, having the KOH terms as their generating functions. One of our results greatly extends recent theorems of J. Quinn et al., which presented striking applications to quantum physics.
Cyclic Sieving for torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n
Recently, a combinatorial model for torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n was introduced, and used to derive an explicit formula for their number. In this article we determine the number of torsion pairs that are invariant under b-fold application of Auslander-Reiten translation. It turns out that the set of torsion pairs together with Auslander-Reiten translation, and a natural q-analogue of the formula for the number of all torsion pairs exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

The Hopf algebra of word-quasi-symmetric functions ($\WQSym$), a noncommutative generalization of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions, can be endowed with an internal product that has several compatibility properties with the other operations on $\WQSym$. This extends constructions familiar and central in the theory of free Lie algebras, noncommutative symmetric functions and their various applications fields, and allows to interpret $\WQSym$ as a convolution algebra of linear endomorphisms of quasi-shuffle algebras. We then use this interpretation to study the fine structure of quasi-shuffle algebras (MZVs, free Rota-Baxter algebras...). In particular, we compute their Adams operations and prove the existence of generalized Eulerian idempotents, that is, of a canonical left-inverse to the natural surjection map to their indecomposables, allowing for the combinatorial construction of free polynomial generators for these algebras.
H-colouring bipartite graphs

For graphs $G$ and $H$, an {\em $H$-colouring} of $G$ (or {\em homomorphism} from $G$ to $H$) is a function from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves adjacency. $H$-colourings generalize such graph theory notions as proper colourings and independent sets.
For a given $H$, $k \in V(H)$ and $G$ we consider the proportion of vertices of $G$ that get mapped to $k$ in a uniformly chosen $H$-colouring of $G$. Our main result concerns this quantity when $G$ is regular and bipartite. We find numbers $0 \leq a^-(k) \leq a^+(k) \leq 1$ with the property that for all such $G$, with high probability the proportion is between $a^-(k)$ and $a^+(k)$, and we give examples where these extremes are achieved. For many $H$ we have $a^-(k) = a^+(k)$ for all $k$ and so in these cases we obtain a quite precise description of the almost sure appearance of a randomly chosen $H$-colouring.
As a corollary, we show that in a uniform proper $q$-colouring of a regular bipartite graph, if $q$ is even then with high probability every colour appears on a proportion close to $1/q$ of the vertices, while if $q$ is odd then with high probability every colour appears on at least a proportion close to $1/(q+1)$ of the vertices and at most a proportion close to $1/(q-1)$ of the vertices.
Our results generalize to natural models of weighted $H$-colourings, and also to bipartite graphs which are sufficiently close to regular. As an application of this latter extension we describe the typical structure of $H$-colourings of graphs which are obtained from $n$-regular bipartite graphs by percolation, and we show that $p=1/n$ is a threshold function across which the typical structure changes.
The approach is through entropy, and extends work of J. Kahn, who considered the size of a randomly chosen independent set of a regular bipartite graph.
H-coloring tori

For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a function from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves adjacency. $H$-colorings encode graph theory notions such as independent sets and proper colorings, and are a natural setting for the study of hard-constraint models in statistical physics.
We study the set of $H$-colorings of the even discrete torus ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$, the graph on vertex set ${0, ..., m-1}^d$ ($m$ even) with two strings adjacent if they differ by 1 (mod $m$) on one coordinate and agree on all others. This is a bipartite graph, with bipartition classes ${\mathcal E}$ and ${\mathcal O}$. In the case $m=2$ the even discrete torus is the discrete hypercube or Hamming cube $Q_d$, the usual nearest neighbor graph on ${0,1}^d$.
We obtain, for any $H$ and fixed $m$, a structural characterization of the space of $H$-colorings of ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$. We show that it may be partitioned into an exceptional subset of negligible size (as $d$ grows) and a collection of subsets indexed by certain pairs $(A,B) \in V(H)^2$, with each $H$-coloring in the subset indexed by $(A,B)$ having all but a vanishing proportion of vertices from ${\mathcal E}$ mapped to vertices from $A$, and all but a vanishing proportion of vertices from ${\mathcal O}$ mapped to vertices from $B$. This implies a long-range correlation phenomenon for uniformly chosen $H$-colorings of ${\mathbb Z}^d_m$ with $m$ fixed and $d$ growing.
Our proof proceeds through an analysis of the entropy of a uniformly chosen $H$-coloring, and extends an approach of Kahn, who had considered the special case of $m=2$ and $H$ a doubly infinite path. All our results generalize to a natural weighted model of $H$-colorings.
Demystifying a divisibility property of the Kostant partition function
We study a family of identities regarding a divisibility property of the Kostant partition function which first appeared in a paper of Baldoni and Vergne. To prove the identities, Baldoni and Vergne used techniques of residues and called the resulting divisibility property "mysterious." We prove these identities entirely combinatorially and provide a natural explanation of why the divisibility occurs. We also point out several ways to generalize the identities.

We study type $A$ nilpotent Hessenberg varieties equipped with a natural $S^1$-action using techniques introduced by Tymoczko, Harada-Tymoczko, and Bayegan-Harada, with a particular emphasis on a special class of nilpotent Springer varieties corresponding to the partition $λ= (n-2,2)$ for $n \geq 4$. First we define the adjacent-pair matrix corresponding to any filling of a Young diagram with $n$ boxes with the alphabet $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Using the adjacent-pair matrix we make more explicit and also extend some statements concerning highest forms of linear operators in previous work of Tymoczko. Second, for a nilpotent operator $N$ and Hessenberg function $h$, we construct an explicit bijection between the $S^1$-fixed points of the nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\Hess(N,h)$ and the set of $(h,λ_N)$-permissible fillings of the Young diagram $λ_N$. Third, we use poset pinball, the combinatorial game introduced by Harada and Tymoczko, to study the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type $A$ Springer varieties $\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)}$ associated to Young diagrams of shape $(n-2,2)$ for $n\geq 4$. Specifically, we use the dimension pair algorithm for Betti-acceptable pinball described by Bayegan and Harada to specify a subset of the equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety $\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)$ which maps to a module basis of $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$ under the projection $H^*_T(\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)) \to H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. Our pinball module basis is not poset-upper-triangular; this is the first concrete such example in the literature. A consequence of our proof is that there exists a simple and explicit change of basis which transforms our basis to a poset-upper-triangular module basis for $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. We close with open questions for future work.

We present the program Boundary, whose source files are available at http://people.sissa.it/~maggiolo/boundary/. Given two natural numbers g and n satisfying 2g+n-2>0, the program generates all genus g stable graphs with n unordered marked points. Each such graph determines the topological type of a nodal stable curve of arithmetic genus g with n unordered marked points. Our motivation comes from the fact that the boundary of the moduli space of stable genus g, n-pointed curves can be stratified by taking loci of curves of a fixed topological type.
Generalized compositions with a fixed number of parts
We investigate compositions of a positive integer with a fixed number of parts, when there are several types of each natural number. These compositions produce new relationships among binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and numbers of the Catalan triangle.
Generalized Compositions of Natural Numbers
We consider compositions of natural numbers when there are different types of each natural number. Several recursions as well as some closed formulas for the number of compositions is derived. We also find its relationships with some known classes of integers such as Fibonacci, Catalan, Pell, Pell-Lucas, and Jacobsthal numbers.

In this paper, we determine representatives for the mutation classes of skew-symmetrizable 3x3 matrices and associated graphs using a natural minimality condition, generalizing and strengthening results of Beineke-Brustle-Hille and Felikson-Shapiro-Tumarkin. Furthermore, we obtain a new numerical invariant for the mutation operation on skew-symmetrizable matrices of arbitrary size.
Dense locally testable codes cannot have constant rate and distance

A q-query locally testable code (LTC) is an error correcting code that can be tested by a randomized algorithm that reads at most q symbols from the given word. An important question is whether there exist LTCs that have the ccc-property: constant relative rate, constant relative distance, and that can be tested with a constant number of queries. Such codes are sometimes referred to as "asymptotically good".
We show that dense LTCs cannot be ccc. The density of a tester is roughly the average number of distinct local views in which a coordinate participates. An LTC is dense if it has a tester with density >> 1.
More precisely, we show that a 3-query locally testable code with a tester of density >> 1 cannot be ccc. Moreover, we show that a q-query locally testable code (q>3) with a tester of density >> n^{q-2} cannot be ccc. Our results hold when the tester has the following two properties: 1) "no weights": Every q-tuple of queries occurs with the same probability. 2) "last-one-fixed": In every `test' of the tester, the value to any q-1 of the symbols determines the value of the last symbol. (Linear codes have constraints of this type).
We also show that several natural ways to quantitatively improve our results would already resolve the general ccc-question, i.e. also for non-dense LTCs.

Tensor models are used nowadays for implementing a fundamental theory of quantum gravity. We define here a polynomial $\mathcal T$ encoding the supplementary topological information. This polynomial is a natural generalization of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial (used to characterize matrix graphs) and is different of the Gur\uau polynomial, (R. Gur\uau, "Topological Graph Polynomials in Colored Group Field Theory", Annales Henri Poincare {\bf 11}, 565-584 (2010)) defined for a particular class of tensor graphs, the colorable ones. The polynomial $\mathcal T$ is defined for both colorable and non-colorable graphs and it is proved to satisfy the contraction/deletion relation. A non-trivial example of a non-colorable graphs is analyzed.
