Snow Leopard Permutations and Their Even and Odd Threads
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (June 1, 2016) dmtcs:1279 • View Publication • BIB
Caffrey, Egge, Michel, Rubin and Ver Steegh recently introduced snow leopard permutations, which are the anti-Baxter permutations that are compatible with the doubly alternating Baxter permutations. Among other things, they showed that these permutations preserve parity, and that the number of snow leopard permutations of length $2n-1$ is the Catalan number $C_n$. In this paper we investigate the permutations that the snow leopard permutations induce on their even and odd entries; we call these the even threads and the odd threads, respectively. We give recursive bijections between these permutations and certain families of Catalan paths. We characterize the odd (resp. even) threads which form the other half of a snow leopard permutation whose even (resp. odd) thread is layered in terms of pattern avoidance, and we give a constructive bijection between the set of permutations of length $n$ which are both even threads and odd threads and the set of peakless Motzkin paths of length $n+1$.

A generalized Goulden-Jackson cluster method and lattice path enumeration
Published in Discrete Math. 341(2): 358-379, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for obtaining generating functions for counting words in a free monoid by occurrences of a set of subwords. We introduce a generalization of the cluster method for monoid networks, which generalize the combinatorial framework of free monoids. As a sample application of the generalized cluster method, we compute bivariate and multivariate generating functions counting Motzkin paths---both with height bounded and unbounded---by statistics corresponding to the number of occurrences of various subwords, yielding both closed-form and continued fraction formulae.

A solvable non-directed model of polymer adsorption
Published • View Publication • BIB
Prudent walks are self-avoiding walks which cannot step towards an already occupied vertex. We introduce a new model of adsorbing prudent walks on the square lattice, which start on an impenetrable surface and accrue a fugacity $a$ with each step along the surface. These are different to other exactly solved models of polymer adsorption, like Dyck paths, Motzkin paths and partially-directed walks, in that they are not trivially directed - they are able to step in all lattice directions. We calculate the generating functions, free energies and surface densities for this model and observe a first-order adsorption transition at the critical value of the surface interaction.

Some results on Dyck paths and Motzkin paths
We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of Dyck paths and some operations on them. We determine a formula for the cardinality of those equivalence classes and use this information to obtain a combinatorial formula for the number of Dyck and Motzkin paths of a fixed length.

A bijection between certain quarter plane walks and Motzkin paths
This short note gives a bijection between quarter plane walks using the steps $\{\rightarrow, \searrow, \downarrow, \leftarrow, \nwarrow, \uparrow\}$ and bicoloured Motzkin paths.
Cross-bifix-free sets via Motzkin paths generation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cross-bifix-free sets are sets of words such that no prefix of any word is a sufix of any other word. In this paper, we introduce a general constructive method for the sets of cross-bifix-free q-ary words of fixed length. It enables us to determine a cross-bifix-free words subset which has the property to be non-expandable.

Enumerations of humps and peaks in $(k,a)$-paths and $(n,m)$-Dyck paths via bijective proofs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Mansour and Shattuck studied $(k,a)$-paths and gave formulas that relate the total number of humps (peaks) in all $(k,a)$-paths to the number of super $(k,a)$-paths. These results generalize earlier results of Regev on Dyck paths and Motzkin paths. Their proofs are based on generating functions and they asked for bijective proofs for their results. In this paper we first give bijective proofs of Mansour and Shattuck's results, then we extend our study to $(n,m)$-Dyck paths. We give a bijection that relates the total number of peaks in all $(n,m)$-Dyck paths to certain free $(n,m)$-paths when $n$ and $m$ are coprime. From this bijection we get the number of $(n,m)$-Dyck paths with exactly $j$ peaks, which is a generalization of the well-known result that the number Dyck paths of order $n$ with exactly $j$ peaks is the Narayana number $\frac{1}{k}{n-1\choose k-1}{n\choose k-1}$.

The generating function for total displacement
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a 1977 paper, Diaconis and Graham studied what Knuth calls the total displacement of a permutation $w$, which is the sum of the distances $|w(i)-i|$. In recent work of the first author and Tenner, this statistic appears as twice the type $A_{n-1}$ version of a statistic for Coxeter groups called the depth of $w$. There are various enumerative results for this statistic in the work of Diaconis and Graham, codified as exercises in Knuth's textbook, and some other results in the work of Petersen and Tenner. However, no formula for the generating function of this statistic appears in the literature. Knuth comments that "the generating function for total displacement does not appear to have a simple form." In this paper, we translate the problem of computing the distribution of total displacement into a problem of counting weighted Motzkin paths. In this way, standard techniques allow us to express the generating function for total displacement as a continued fraction.

On the Number of Walks in a Triangular Domain
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider walks on a triangular domain that is a subset of the triangular lattice. We then specialise this by dividing the lattice into two directed sublattices with different weights. Our central result is an explicit formula for the generating function of walks starting at a fixed point in this domain and ending anywhere within the domain. Intriguingly, the specialisation of this formula to walks starting in a fixed corner of the triangle shows that these are equinumerous to two-coloured Motzkin paths, and two-coloured three-candidate Ballot paths, in a strip of finite height.

Relative locations of subwords in free operated semigroups and Motzkin words
Published in Frontier Math 10 (2015) 1243-1261 • View Publication • BIB
Bracketed words are basic structures both in mathematics (such as Rota-Baxter algebras) and mathematical physics (such as rooted trees) where the locations of the substructures are important. In this paper we give the classification of the relative locations of two bracketed subwords of a bracketed word in an operated semigroup into the separated, nested and intersecting cases. We achieve this by establishing a correspondence between relative locations of bracketed words and those of words by applying the concept of Motzkin words which are the algebraic forms of Motzkin paths.

Enumeration of $k$-Fibonacci Paths using Infinite Weighted Automata
Published in International Journal of Mathematical Combinatorics, 2, 20-35, 2014 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce a new family of generalized colored Motzkin paths, where horizontal steps are colored by means of $F_{k,l}$ colors, where $F_{k,l}$ is the $l$th $k$-Fibonacci number. We study the enumeration of this family according to the length. For this, we use infinite weighted automata.
Applications in Enumerative Combinatorics of Infinite Weighted Automata and Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we studied infinite weighted automata and a general methodology to solve a wide variety of classical lattice path counting problems in an uniform way. This counting problems are related to Dyck paths, Motzkin paths and some generalizations. These methodology uses weighted automata, equations of ordinary generating functions and continued fractions. It is a variation of the one proposed by J. Rutten.

Minors of a Class of Riordan Arrays Related to Weighted Partial Motzkin Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
A partial Motzkin path is a path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, k)$ in the $XOY$-plane that does not go below the $X$-axis and consists of up steps $U=(1, 1)$, down steps $D=(1, -1)$ and horizontal steps $H=(1, 0)$. A weighted partial Motzkin path is a partial Motzkin path with the weight assignment that all up steps and down steps are weighted by 1, the horizontal steps are endowed with a weight $x$ if they are lying on $X$-axis, and endowed with a weight $y$ if they are not lying on $X$-axis. Denote by $M_{n,k}(x, y)$ to be the weight function of all weighted partial Motzkin paths from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, k)$, and $\mathcal{M}=(M_{n,k}(x,y))_{n\geq k\geq 0}$ to be the infinite lower triangular matrices. In this paper, we consider the sums of minors of second order of the matrix $\mathcal{M}$, and obtain a lot of interesting determinant identities related to $\mathcal{M}$, which are proved by bijections using weighted partial Motzkin paths. When the weight parameters $(x, y)$ are specialized, several new identities are obtained related to some classical sequences involving Catalan numbers. Besides, in the alternating cases we also give some new explicit formulas for Catalan numbers.
Standard Young Tableaux and Colored Motzkin Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we propose a notion of colored Motzkin paths and establish a bijection between the $n$-cell standard Young tableaux (SYT) of bounded height and the colored Motzkin paths of length $n$. This result not only gives a lattice path interpretation of the standard Young tableaux but also reveals an unexpected intrinsic relation between the set of SYTs with at most $2d+1$ rows and the set of SYTs with at most 2d rows.

The Distribution of Heights of Discrete Excursions
We compute the limiting distribution of height of a random discrete excursion with step sets consisting of one positive step 1 and arbitrary finite set of non-positive integers. The limit law is the supremum of a Brownian excursion. This is well-known for Dyck and Motzkin paths. We apply a representation of the length and height generating function in terms of certain Schur polynomials put forward in a 2008 paper by Bousquet-Melout which leads to a form of the moment generating functions amenable to a Mellin transform analysis.
Combinatorial bijections from hatted avoiding permutations in $S_n(132)$ to generalized Dyck and Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new concept of permutation avoidance pattern called hatted pattern, which is a natural generalization of the barred pattern. We show the growth rate of the class of permutations avoiding a hatted pattern in comparison to barred pattern. We prove that Dyck paths with no peak at height $p$, Dyck paths with no $ud... du$ and Motzkin paths are counted by hatted pattern avoiding permutations in $\s_n(132)$ by showing explicit bijections. As a result, a new direct bijection between Motzkin paths and permutations in $\s_n(132)$ without two consecutive adjacent numbers is given. These permutations are also represented on the Motzkin generating tree based on the Enumerative Combinatorial Object (ECO) method.

Constructing combinatorial operads from monoids
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, 229--240, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operad obtained from the additive monoid. These involve various familiar combinatorial objects: parking functions, packed words, planar rooted trees, generalized Dyck paths, Schröder trees, Motzkin paths, integer compositions, directed animals, etc. We also retrieve some known operads: the magmatic operad, the commutative associative operad, and the diassociative operad.

Moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials

New formulas for the nth moment of the Askey-Wilson polynomials are given. These are derived using analytic techniques, and by considering three combinatorial models for the moments: Motzkin paths, matchings, and staircase tableaux. A related positivity theorem is given and another one is conjectured.

Crossings and nestings in colored set partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20 (2013), no. 4, Research Paper 6 • View Publication • BIB
Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the sizes of the largest crossings and nestings in colored set partitions likewise have a symmetric joint distribution, we consider several related enumeration problems. We prove that $r$-colored set partitions with no crossing arcs of the same color are in bijection with certain paths in $\NN^r$, generalizing the correspondence between noncrossing (uncolored) set partitions and 2-Motzkin paths. Combining this with recent work of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna affords a proof that the sequence counting noncrossing 2-colored set partitions is P-recursive. We also discuss how our methods extend to several variations of colored set partitions with analogous notions of crossings and nestings.

Zeilberger's Holonomic Ansatz for Pfaffians
Published • View Publication • BIB
A variation of Zeilberger's holonomic ansatz for symbolic determinant evaluations is proposed which is tailored to deal with Pfaffians. The method is also applicable to determinants of skew-symmetric matrices, for which the original approach does not work. As Zeilberger's approach is based on the Laplace expansion (cofactor expansion) of the determinant, we derive our approach from the cofactor expansion of the Pfaffian. To demonstrate the power of our method, we prove, using computer algebra algorithms, some conjectures proposed in the paper "Pfaffian decomposition and a Pfaffian analogue of q-Catalan Hankel determinants" by Ishikawa, Tagawa, and Zeng. A minor summation formula related to partitions and Motzkin paths follows as a corollary.
