Counting self-conjugate (s,s+1,s+2)-core partitions
We are concerned with counting self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partitions. A Motzkin path of length $n$ is a path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$ which stays above the $x$-axis and consists of the up $U=(1,1)$, down $D=(1,-1)$, and flat $F=(1,0)$ steps. We say that a Motzkin path of length $n$ is symmetric if its reflection about the line $x=n/2$ is itself. In this paper, we show that the number of self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-cores is equal to the number of symmetric Motzkin paths of length $s$, and give a closed formula for this number.

Consecutive patterns in restricted permutations and involutions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Combinatorics (June 5, 2019) dmtcs:5175 • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that the set $\mathbf I_n$ of involutions of the symmetric group $\mathbf S_n$ corresponds bijectively - by the Foata map $F$ - to the set of $n$-permutations that avoid the two vincular patterns $\underline{123},$ $\underline{132}.$ We consider a bijection $Γ$ from the set $\mathbf S_n$ to the set of histoires de Laguerre, namely, bicolored Motzkin paths with labelled steps, and study its properties when restricted to $\mathbf S_n(1\underline{23},1\underline{32}).$ In particular, we show that the set $\mathbf S_n(\underline{123},{132})$ of permutations that avoids the consecutive pattern $\underline{123}$ and the classical pattern $132$ corresponds via $Γ$ to the set of Motzkin paths, while its image under $F$ is the set of restricted involutions $\mathbf I_n(3412).$ We exploit these results to determine the joint distribution of the statistics des and inv over $\mathbf S_n(\underline{123},{132})$ and over $\mathbf I_n(3412).$ Moreover, we determine the distribution in these two sets of every consecutive pattern of length three. To this aim, we use a modified version of the well-known Goulden-Jacson cluster method.

A new encoding of permutations by Laguerre histories
We construct a bijection from permutations to some weighted Motzkin paths known as Laguerre histories. As one application of our bijection, a neat $q$-$γ$-positivity expansion of the $(\inv,\exc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials is obtained.
On two subclasses of Motzkin paths and their relation to ternary trees
Two subclasses of Motzkin paths, S-Motzkin and T-Motzkin paths, are introduced. We provide bijections between S-Motzkin paths and ternary trees, S-Motzkin paths and non-crossing trees, and T-Motzkin paths and ordered pairs of ternary trees. Symbolic equations for both paths, and thus generating functions for the paths, are provided. Using these, various parameters involving the two paths are analyzed.

A bijection between ternary trees and a subclass of Motzkin paths
A bijection between ternary trees with $n$ nodes and a subclass of Motzkin paths of length $3n$ is given. This bijection can then be generalized to $t$-ary trees.

Refined enumerations of alternating sign triangles
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article introduces and investigates a refinement of alternating sign trapezoids by means of Catalan objects and Motzkin paths. Alternating sign trapezoids are a generalisation of alternating sign triangles, which were recently introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and Fischer. We show that the number of alternating sign trapezoids associated with a Catalan object (resp. Motzkin path) is a polynomial function in the length of the shorter base of the trapezoid. We also study the rational roots of the polynomials and formulate several conjectures and derive some partial results. Lastly, we deduce a constant term identity for the refined counting of alternating sign trapezoids.

Vertically constrained Motzkin-like paths inspired by bobbin lace
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by a new mathematical model for bobbin lace, this paper considers finite lattice paths formed from the set of step vectors $\mathfrak{A}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$ with the restriction that vertical steps $(\uparrow, \downarrow)$ cannot be consecutive. The set $\mathfrak{A}$ is the union of the well known Motzkin step vectors $\mathfrak{M}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow\}$ with the vertical steps $\{\uparrow, \downarrow\}$. An explicit bijection $φ$ between the exhaustive set of vertically constrained paths formed from $\mathfrak{A}$ and a bisection of the paths generated by $\mathfrak{M}$ is presented. In a similar manner, paths with the step vectors $\mathfrak{B}=$$\{\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$, the union of Dyck step vectors and constrained vertical steps, are examined. We show, using the same $φ$ mapping, that there is a bijection between vertically constrained $\mathfrak{B}$ paths and the subset of Motzkin paths avoiding horizontal steps at even indices. Generating functions are derived to enumerate these vertically constrained, partially directed paths when restricted to the half and quarter-plane. Finally, we extend Schröder and Delannoy step sets in a similar manner and find a bijection between these paths and a subset of Schröder paths that are smooth (do not change direction) at a regular horizontal interval.
Enumeration of Łukasiewicz paths modulo some patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any pattern $α$ of length at most two, we enumerate equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths of length $n\geq 0$ where two paths are equivalent whenever the occurrence positions of $α$ are identical on these paths. As a byproduct, we give a constructive bijection between Motzkin paths and some equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths.

A partial order on Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tamari lattice, defined on Catalan objects such as binary trees and Dyck paths, is a well-studied poset in combinatorics. It is thus natural to try to extend it to other families of lattice paths. In this article, we fathom such a possibility by defining and studying an analogy of the Tamari lattice on Motzkin paths. While our generalization is not a lattice, each of its connected components is isomorphic to an interval in the classical Tamari lattice. With this structural result, we proceed to the enumeration of components and intervals in the poset of Motzkin paths we defined. We also extend the structural and enumerative results to Schröder paths. We conclude by a discussion on the relation between our work and that of Baril and Pallo (2014).
From Dyck paths to standard Young tableaux
Published in Ann. Comb. 24 (2020), no. 1, 69-93 • View Publication • BIB
We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.

The Waldspurger Transform of Permutations and Alternating Sign Matrices
In 2005 J.L. Waldspurger proved the following theorem: given a finite real reflection group $W$, the closed positive root cone is tiled by the images of the open weight cone under the action of the linear transformations $id-w$. Shortly thereafter E. Meinrencken extended the result to affine Weyl groups. P.V. Bibikov and V.S. Zhgoon then gave a uniform proof for a discrete reflection group acting on a simply-connected space of constant curvature. In this paper we show that the Waldspurger and Meinrenken theorems of type A give a new perspective on the combinatorics of the symmetric group. In particular, for each permutation matrix $w \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ we define a non-negative integer matrix $\mathbf{WT}(w)$, called the Waldspurger transform of $w$. The definition of the matrix $\mathbf{WT}(w)$ is purely combinatorial but its columns are the images of the fundamental weights under the action of $id-w$, expressed in simple root coordinates. The possible columns of $\mathbf{WT}(w)$ (which we call UM vectors) are in bijection with many interesting structures including: unimodal Motzkin paths, abelian ideals in nilradical of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n(\mathbb{C})$, Young diagrams with maximum hook length $n$, and integer points inside a certain polytope. We show that the sum of the entries of $\mathbf{WT}(w)$ is equal to half the entropy of the corresponding permutation $w$, which is known to equal the rank of $w$ in the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order. Inspired by this, we extend the Waldpurger transform $\mathbf{WT}(M)$ to alternating sign matrices $M$ and give an intrinsic characterization of the image. This provides a geometric realization of Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order (a.k.a. the lattice of alternating sign matrices).

A bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bargraphs are a special class of convex polyominoes. They can be identified with lattice paths with unit steps north, east, and south that start at the origin, end on the $x$-axis, and stay strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs, which are used to represent histograms and to model polymers in statistical physics, have been enumerated in the literature by semiperimeter and by several other statistics, using different methods such as the wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer, and a bijection with certain Motzkin paths. In this paper we describe an unusual bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths, and study how some statistics are mapped by the bijection. As a consequence, we obtain a new interpretation of Catalan numbers, as counting bargraphs where the semiperimeter minus the number of peaks is fixed.

Continued fractions for permutation statistics
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (June 25, 2018) dmtcs:3225 • View Publication • BIB
We explore a bijection between permutations and colored Motzkin paths that has been used in different forms by Foata and Zeilberger, Biane, and Corteel. By giving a visual representation of this bijection in terms of so-called cycle diagrams, we find simple translations of some statistics on permutations (and subsets of permutations) into statistics on colored Motzkin paths, which are amenable to the use of continued fractions. We obtain new enumeration formulas for subsets of permutations with respect to fixed points, excedances, double excedances, cycles, and inversions. In particular, we prove that cyclic permutations whose excedances are increasing are counted by the Bell numbers.

Statistics on bargraphs viewed as cornerless Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
A bargraph is a self-avoiding lattice path with steps $U=(0,1)$, $H=(1,0)$ and $D=(0,-1)$ that starts at the origin and ends on the $x$-axis, and stays strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs have been studied as a special class of convex polyominoes, and enumerated using the so-called wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer. In this paper we note that there is a trivial bijection between bargraphs and Motzkin paths without peaks or valleys. This allows us to use the recursive structure of Motzkin paths to enumerate bargraphs with respect to several statistics, finding simpler derivations of known results and obtaining many new ones. We also count symmetric bargraphs and alternating bargraphs. In some cases we construct statistic-preserving bijections between different combinatorial objects, proving some identities that we encounter along the way.

Identities involving weighted Catalan, Schroder and Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate the weighted Catalan, Motzkin and Schröder numbers together with the corresponding weighted paths. The relation between these numbers is illustrated by three equations, which also lead to some known and new interesting identities. To show these three equations, we provide combinatorial proofs. One byproduct is to find a bijection between two sets of Catalan paths: one consisting of those with $k$ valleys, and the other consisting of $k$ $\mathbf{N}$ steps in even positions.
On computing the total displacement number via weighted Motzkin paths
Published in 27th International Workshop on Combinatorial Algorithms, IWOCA'16, 423-434, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
Counting the number of permutations of a given total displacement is equivalent to counting weighted Motzkin paths of a given area (Guay-Paquet and Petersen, 2014). The former combinatorial problem is still open. In this work, we show that this connection allows to construct efficient algorithms for counting and for sampling such permutations. These algorithms provide a tool to better understand the original combinatorial problem. A by-product of our approach is a different way of counting based on certain building sequences for Motzkin paths, which may be of independent interest.

Area-width scaling in generalised Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a generalised version of Motzkin paths, where horizontal steps have length $\ell$, with $\ell$ being a fixed positive integer. We first give the general functional equation for the area-length generating function of this model. Using a heuristic ansatz, we derive the area-length scaling behaviour in terms of a scaling function in one variable for the special cases of Dyck, (standard) Motzkin and Schröder paths, before generalising our approach to arbitrary $\ell$. We then derive an expression for the generating function of Schröder paths and analyse the scaling behaviour of this function rigorously in the vicinity of the tri-critical point of the model by applying the method of steepest descents for the case of two coalescing saddle points. Our results show that for Dyck and Schröder paths, the heuristic scaling ansatz reproduces the rigorous results.
Restricted growth function patterns and statistics

A restricted growth function (RGF) of length n is a sequence w = w_1 w_2 ... w_n of positive integers such that w_1 = 1 and w_i is at most 1 + max{w_1,..., w_{i-1}} for i at least 2. RGFs are of interest because they are in natural bijection with set partitions of {1, 2, ..., n}. RGF w avoids RGF v if there is no subword of w which standardizes to v. We study the generating functions sum_{w in R_n(v)} q^{st(w)} where R_n(v) is the set of RGFs of length n which avoid v and st(w) is any of the four fundamental statistics on RGFs defined by Wachs and White. These generating functions exhibit interesting connections with integer partitions and two-colored Motzkin paths, as well as noncrossing and nonnesting set partitions.

A half-normal distribution scheme for generating functions and the unexpected behavior of Motzkin paths
We present an extension of a theorem by Michael Drmota and Michèle Soria [Images and Preimages in Random Mappings, 1997] that can be used to identify the limiting distribution for a class of combinatorial schemata. This is achieved by determining analytical and algebraic properties of the associated bivariate generating function. We give sufficient conditions implying a half-normal limiting distribution, extending the known conditions leading to either a Rayleigh, a Gaussian, or a convolution of the last two distributions. We conclude with three natural appearances of such a limiting distribution in the domain of Motzkin paths.

The Pascal Rhombus and the Generalized Grand Motzkin Paths
In the present article, we find a closed expression for the entries of the Pascal rhombus. Moreover, we show a relation between the entries of the Pascal rhombus and a family of generalized grand Motzkin paths.
