Lorea [11] and later Frank et al. [8] generalized graphic matroids to hypergraphic matroids. In [8], the authors introduced hypertrees as a generalization of spanning trees and proved a form of the theorem of Tutte [18] and Nash-Williams [14]. In [3, 15, 17], the authors explored the modulus of the family of spanning trees in graphs and of the family of bases of matroids, and provided connections to the notions of strength and fractional arboricity. They also established Fulkerson duality for these families. In this paper, we extend these results to hypertrees, and show that the modulus of hypertrees uncovers a hierarchical structure within arbitrary hypergraphs.
Counting plane arrangements via oriented matroids

Planes are familiar mathematical objects which lie at the subtle boundary between continuous geometry and discrete combinatorics. A plane is geometrical, certainly, but the ways that two planes can interact break cleanly into discrete sets: the planes can intersect or not. Here we review how oriented matroids can be used to try to capture the combinatorial aspect, giving a way to encode with finite sets all the ways that $n$ planes can interact. We mention how the one-to-one correspondence breaks down in 2 dimensions for 9 lines, and in 3D for 8 planes. We include illustrations of all the types of plane arrangements using $n=4$ and 5.
Representability of Flag Matroids
We provide a new axiom system for flag matroids, characterize representability of uniform flag matroids, and give forbidden minor characterizations of full flag matroids that are representable over $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$.

For a lattice polytope $P$, the rank of $P$ is defined by $F-(\dim P+1)$, where $F$ is the number of facets of $P$. In this paper, we study matroid polytopes with small rank. More precisely, we characterize matroid independence polytopes and graphic matroid base polytopes with rank at most three. Furthermore, using this characterization, we investigate their relationships with order polytopes, stable set polytopes, and edge polytopes.
Piecewise-exponential functions and Ehrhart fans

This paper studies rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions on rational fans. Motivated by lattice-point counting in polytopes, we introduce a special class of unimodular fans called Ehrhart fans, whose rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions admit a canonical linear functional that behaves like a lattice-point count. In particular, we verify that all complete unimodular fans are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional agrees with lattice-point counting in corresponding polytopes, which can otherwise be interpreted as holomorphic Euler characteristics of vector bundles on smooth toric varieties. We also prove that all Bergman fans of matroids are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional in this case agrees with the Euler characteristic of matroids, introduced recently by Larson, Li, Payne, and Proudfoot. A key property that we prove about the Ehrharticity of fans is that it only depends on the support of the fan, not on the fan structure, thus providing a uniform framework for studying K-rings and Euler characteristics of complete fans and Bergman fans simultaneously.
Hereditary classes of graphs and matroids with finitely many exclusions
A class $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs closed under taking induced subgraphs is called hereditary. We denote by $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{add}$ the class of graphs at most one edge addition away from $\mathcal{G}$, and by $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{epex}$ the class of graphs at most one edge deletion away. We previously showed that if $\mathcal{G}$ has finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then so does the hereditary class $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{epex}$. In this paper, we prove the corresponding result for $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{add}$. Consequently, we show that the class of graphs within a fixed number of vertex deletions, edge deletions, and edge additions from $\mathcal{G}$ also has finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs provided that $\mathcal{G}$ does. We also present the binary and ternary matroid analogue of this result.
Additionally, if $\mathcal{G}$ is closed under complementation, the forbidden induced subgraphs of $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{add}$ and $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{epex}$ are complements of each other. We provide explicit lists of the forbidden induced subgraphs for $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{add}$, and consequently for $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{epex}$, when $\mathcal{G}$ is the class of split graphs, cographs, or threshold graphs. Following Gyárfás's framework, we introduce $(p,q)$-edge split graphs, analogous to his $(p,q)$-split graphs, and prove they have finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs.
Valuative Invariants of Catalan Matroids

We decompose the indicator function of each $(a, b)$-Catalan matroid polytope as a weighted sum of indicator function of matroid polytopes that correspond to direct sums of uniform matroids. Catalan matroids lie in the interior of the convex hull of direct sums of uniform matroids in the polytope of all matroids introduced by Ferroni and Fink. Moreover, we describe combinatorially the coefficients of the convex combination of direct sums of uniform matroid corresponding to an $(a,b)$-Catalan matroid. In particular, this allows us to derive explicit formulas for arbitrary valuative invariants of $(a, b)$-Catalan matroids. Among other applications, we prove that $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids are Ehrhart positive, and we find formulas for the Kazhdan--Lusztig invariants of these matroids.
The complexity of matroid homomorphism reconfiguration

We consider a reconfiguration version of the homomorphism problem ${\rm Hom}_\mathbb{M}(N)$ for binary matroids $N$. This reconfiguration problem, ${\rm Recol}_\mathbb{M}(N)$, asks, for two homomorphisms $φ$ and $ψ$ of a matroid $M$ to $N$, if there is a path of homomorphism from $φ$ to $ψ$ such that consecutive homomorphism in the path differ on a single cocircuit of $N$. We show that this problem is trivial in the case that $N$ dismantles to the graphic matroid $M(K_2)$, and that the problem is ${\rm PSPACE}$-complete when $N$ is the graphic matroid $M(K_3)$, $M(K_4)$, or any graphic matroid containing $M(K_5)$.
Skew shapes, Ehrhart positivity and beyond

A classical result by Kreweras (1965) allows one to compute the number of plane partitions of a given skew shape and bounded parts as certain determinants. We prove that these determinants expand as polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. This result can be reformulated in terms of order polynomials of cell posets of skew shapes, and explains important positivity phenomena about the Ehrhart polynomials of shard polytopes, matroids, and order polytopes. Among other applications, we generalize a positivity statement from Schubert calculus by Fomin and Kirillov (1997) from straight shapes to skew shapes. We show that all shard polytopes are Ehrhart positive and, stronger, that all fence posets, including the zig-zag poset, and all circular fence posets have order polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. We discuss a general method for proving positivity which reduces to showing positivity of the linear terms of the order polynomials. We propose positivity conjectures on other relevant classes of posets.

Consider a finite field $\mathbb F_q$, $q=p^d$, where $p$ is an odd number. Let $M=(E,r)$ be a regular matroid; denote by ${\mathcal B}$ the family of its bases, $\bar s(M;α)=\sum_{B\in {\mathcal B}}\prod_{e\not\in B} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$, $α_e\neq 0$. Let a subset $A\equiv A(α)$ in $E$ have the maximal cardinality and satisfy the condition $\bar s(M|A;α)\neq 0$, while ${r^*}(α)=|A|-r(E)$. Let us represent the value of the characteristic polynomial of the matroid $M$ at the point $q$ as the linear combination of Legendre symbols with respect to $\bar s(M|A;α)$, whose coefficients are modulo equal to $1/q^{r^*(α)/2}$. This representation generalizes the formula for a flow polynomial of a graph which was obtained by us earlier. The latter formula is an analog of the so-called $α$-representation of vacuum Feynman amplitudes in the case of a finite field, which has inspired the Kontsevich conjecture (1997). The $α$-representation technique is also applicable for expressing the number of Tait colorings for a cubic biconnected planar graph in terms of principal minors of the matrix of faces of this graph.
Symmetric Tensor Matroids, Dual Rigidity Matroids, and the Maximality Conjecture
Inspired by a recent result of Brakensiek et al. that symmetric tensor matroids and rigidity matroids are linked by matroid duality, we define abstract symmetric tensor matroids as a dual concept to abstract rigidity matroids and establish their basic properties. We then exploit this duality to obtain an alternative characterisation of the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity on $K_n$ for $n-d\leq 6$ to that given by Grasseger et al. Our results imply that Graver's maximality conjecture holds for these matroids. We also consider the related family of $K_{1,t+1}$-matroids on $K_n$ and show that this family has a unique maximal element only when $t\leq 3$. This implies that the family of second quasi symmetric powers of the uniform matroid $U_{t,n}$ does not have a unique maximal matroid if $t\geq 4$ and $n$ is sufficiently large.
A theory of $q$-transversals
Given an indexed family ${\cal A} = (A_1, A_2, \dotsc, A_n)$ of subsets of some given set $S$, a \emph{transversal} is a set of distinct elements $x_1, x_2, \dotsc, x_n$ with each $x_i \in A_i$. Transversals have been studied since 1935 and have many attractive properties, with a deep connection to matroids. A $q$-analog is formed by replacing the notion of a set by the notion of a vector space, with a corresponding replacement of other concepts. In this paper we define a $q$-analog of the theory of transversals, and show that many of the main properties of ordinary transversals are shared by this analog.
Kinematic Stratifications

We study stratifications of regions in the space of symmetric matrices. Their points are Mandelstam matrices for momentum vectors in particle physics. Kinematic strata in these regions are indexed by signs and rank two matroids. Matroid strata of Lorentzian quadratic forms arise when all signs are non-negative. We characterize the posets of strata, for massless and massive particles, with and without momentum conservation.
Multi-parametric matroids -- Applications to interdiction and weight set decomposition
In this article, we investigate the multi-parametric matroid problem. The weights of the elements of the matroid's ground set depend linearly on an arbitrary but fixed number of parameters, each of which is taken from a real interval. The goal is to compute a minimum weight basis for each possible combination of the parameters. For this problem, we propose an algorithm that requires a polynomial number of independence tests and discuss two useful applications. First, the algorithm can be applied to solve a multi-parametric version of a special matroid interdiction problem, and second, it can be utilized to compute the weight set decomposition of the multi-objective (graphic) matroid problem. For the latter, we asymptotically improve the current state-of-the-art algorithm by a factor that is almost proportional to the number of edges of the graphic matroid.
On the one-dimensional extensions of $q$-matroids
In this paper we introduce a $q$-analogue of the single-element extensions of matroids for $q$-matroids, which we call one-dimensional extensions. To enumerate such extensions, we define a $q$-analogue of modular cuts and define a certain function which we call a modular cut selector. It assigns each newly appearing one-dimensional subspace to a modular cut. By using these notion, we prove the one-to-one correspondence between the one-dimensional extensions and the modular cut selectors. Furthermore, we define the canonnical representatives of the isomorphic class of the $q$-matroids, which enable us to enumerate non-isomorphic $q$-matroids without the paiwise isomorphism testing. As an application, we develop a classification algorithm for $q$-matroids, and classify all the $q$-matroids on ground spaces over $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$ of dimension $4$ and $5$ respectively. We also determine some $5$-dimensional $q$-matroids related to the $q$-Fano plane, which is the $q$-analogue of the Fano plane, over $\mathbb{F}_2$.
On the coefficients of Tutte polynomials with one variable at 1
Denote the Tutte polynomial of a graph $G$ and a matroid $M$ by $T_G(x,y)$ and $T_M(x,y)$ respectively. $T_G(x,1)$ and $T_G(1,y)$ were generalized to hypergraphs and further extended to integer polymatroids by Kálmán \cite{Kalman} in 2013, called interior and exterior polynomials respectively. Let $G$ be a $(k+1)$-edge connected graph of order $n$ and size $m$, and let $g=m-n+1$. Guan et al. (2023) \cite{Guan} obtained the coefficients of $T_G(1,y)$: \[[y^j]T_G(1,y)=\binom{m-j-1}{n-2} \text{ for } g-k\leq j\leq g,\] which was deduced from coefficients of the exterior polynomial of polymatroids. Recently, Chen and Guo (2025) \cite{Chen} further obtained \[[y^j]T_G(1,y)=\binom{m-j-1}{n-2}-\sum_{i=k+1}^{g-j}\binom{m-j-i-1}{n-2}|\mathcal{EC}_i(G)|\] for $g-3(k+1)/2< j\leq g$, where $\mathcal{EC}_i(G)$ denotes the set of all minimal edge cuts with $i$ edges. In this paper, for any matroid $M=(X,rk)$ we first obtain \[[y^j]T_M(1,y)=\sum_{t=j}^{|X|-r}(-1)^{t-j}\binom{t}{j}σ_{r+t}(M),\] where $σ_{r+t}(M)$ denotes the number of spanning sets with $r+t$ elements in $M$ and $r=rk(M)$. Moveover, the expression of $[x^i]T_M(x,1)$ is obtained immediately from the duality of the Tutte polynomial. As applications of our results, we generalize the two aforementioned results on graphs to the setting of matroids. This not only resolves two open problems posed by Chen and Guo in \cite{Chen} but also provides a purely combinatorial proof that is significantly simpler than their original proofs.
On the $k$-volume rigidity of a simplicial complex in $\mathbb{R}^d$

We define a generic rigidity matroid for $k$-volumes of a simplicial complex in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and prove that for $2\leq k \leq d-1$ it has the same rank as the classical generic $d$-rigidity matroid on the same vertex set (namely, the case $k=1$). This is in contrast with the $k=d$ case, previously studied by Lubetzky and Peled, which presents a different behavior. We conjecture a characterization for the bases of this matroid in terms of $d$-rigidity of the $1$-skeleton of the complex and a combinatorial Hall condition on incidences of edges in $k$-faces.
Canonical forms of oriented matroids

Positive geometries are semialgebraic sets equipped with a canonical differential form whose residues mirror the boundary structure of the geometry. Every full-dimensional projective polytope is a positive geometry. Motivated by the canonical forms of polytopes, we construct a canonical form for any tope of an oriented matroid, inside the Orlik--Solomon algebra of the underlying matroid. Using these canonical forms, we construct bases for the Orlik--Solomon algebra of a matroid, and for the Aomoto cohomology. These bases of canonical forms are a foundational input in the theory of matroid amplitudes introduced by the second author.
The polytope of all matroids

It is possible to write the indicator function of any matroid polytope as an integer combination of indicator functions of Schubert matroid polytopes. In this way, every matroid on $n$ elements of rank $r$ can be thought of as a lattice point in the space having a coordinate for each Schubert matroid on $n$ elements of rank $r$.
We study the convex hull of all these lattice points, with particular focus on the vertices, which come from the matroids we call extremal matroids. We show that several famous classes of matroids arise as faces of the polytopes, and in many cases we determine the dimension of this face explicitly. As an application, we show that there exist valuative invariants that attain non-negative values at all representable matroids, but fail to be non-negative in general.
Around the Merino--Welsh conjecture: improving Jackson's inequality
The Merino-Welsh conjecture states that for a graph $G$ without loops and bridges we have $$\max(T_G(2,0),T_G(0,2))\geq T_G(1,1).$$ Later Jackson proved that for any matroid $M$ without loop and coloop we have $$T_M(3,0)T_M(0,3)\geq T_M(1,1)^2.$$ The value $3$ in this statement was improved to $2.9242$ by Beke, Csáji, Csikvári and Pituk. In this paper, we further improve on this result by showing that $$T_M(2.355,0)T_M(0,2.355)\geq T_M(1,1)^2.$$ We also prove that the Merino--Welsh conjecture is true for matroids $M$, where all circuits of $M$ and its dual $M^*$ have length between $\ell$ and $(\ell-2)^4$ for some $\ell\geq 6$.
