The Lattice of Cyclic Flats of a Matroid
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2008 • View Publication • BIB
A flat of a matroid is cyclic if it is a union of circuits. The cyclic flats of a matroid form a lattice under inclusion. We study these lattices and explore matroids from the perspective of cyclic flats. In particular, we show that every lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a lattice Z of sets and a function r on Z to be the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid and the restriction of the corresponding rank function to Z. We define cyclic width and show that this concept gives rise to minor-closed, dual-closed classes of matroids, two of which contain only transversal matroids.

Reduction of Rota's basis conjecture to a problem on three bases
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rota's basis conjecture, open since 1989, states that if B_1, B_2, ..., B_n are n bases of a vector space of rank n, then there is an nxn grid of vectors such that the vectors in the ith row are precisely the elements of B_i and such that every column is also a basis. It is shown that Rota's basis conjecture follows from a similar conjecture that involves only three bases instead of n bases: If M is a matroid of rank n that is a disjoint union of 3 bases, and I_1, ..., I_n are disjoint independent sets with |I_i| <= 3, then there exists an nx3 grid G that contains each element of M exactly once, with the elements of I_i appearing in row i, such that the three columns of G are bases of M.

Kalai orientations on matroid polytopes
Let P a polytope and let G(P) be the graph of P. Following Gil Kalai, we say that an acyclic orientation O of G(P) is good if, for every non-empty face F of P, the induced graph G(F) has exactly one sink. Gil Kalai gave a simple way to tell a simple polytope from the good orientations of its graph. This article is a broader study of ``good orientations'' (of the graphs) on matroid polytopes.

Maximal Sidon Sets and Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let X be a subset of an abelian group and a_1,...,a_h,a'_1,...,a'_h a sequence of 2h elements of X such that a_1 + ... + a_h = a'_1 + ... + a'_h. The set X is a Sidon set of order h if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., h. For k \leq h, the set X is a generalized Sidon set of order (h,k), if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., k. It is proved that if X is a generalized Sidon set of order (2h-1,h-1), then the maximal Sidon sets of order h contained in X have the same cardinality. Moreover, X is a matroid where the independent subsets of X are the Sidon sets of order h.

The multivariate Tutte polynomial (alias Potts model) for graphs and matroids
Published in Published in "Surveys in Combinatorics, 2005", edited by Bridget S. Webb (Cambridge University Press, 2005), pp. 173-226 • View Publication • BIB
The multivariate Tutte polynomial (known to physicists as the Potts-model partition function) can be defined on an arbitrary finite graph G, or more generally on an arbitrary matroid M, and encodes much important combinatorial information about the graph (indeed, in the matroid case it encodes the full structure of the matroid). It contains as a special case the familiar two-variable Tutte polynomial -- and therefore also its one-variable specializations such as the chromatic polynomial, the flow polynomial and the reliability polynomial -- but is considerably more flexible. I begin by giving an introduction to all these problems, stressing the advantages of working with the multivariate version. I then discuss some questions concerning the complex zeros of the multivariate Tutte polynomial, along with their physical interpretations in statistical mechanics (in connection with the Yang--Lee approach to phase transitions) and electrical circuit theory. Along the way I mention numerous open problems. This survey is intended to be understandable to mathematicians with no prior knowledge of physics.

Rigidity theory for matroids
Published in Comment. Math. Helv. 82 (2007), 197-233 • View Publication • BIB
Combinatorial rigidity theory seeks to describe the rigidity or flexibility of bar-joint frameworks in R^d in terms of the structure of the underlying graph G. The goal of this article is to broaden the foundations of combinatorial rigidity theory by replacing G with an arbitrary representable matroid M. The ideas of rigidity independence and parallel independence, as well as Laman's and Recski's combinatorial characterizations of 2-dimensional rigidity for graphs, can naturally be extended to this winder setting. As we explain, many of these fundamental concepts really depend only on the matroid associated with G (or its Tutte polynomial) and have little to do with the special nature of graphic matroids or the field R. Our main result is a "nesting theorem" relating the various kinds of independence. Immediate corollaries include generalizations of Laman's Theorem, as well as the equality of 2-rigidity and 2-parallel independence. A key tool in our study is the space of photos of M, a natural algebraic variety whose irreducibility is closely related to the notions of rigidity independence and parallel independence. The number of points on this variety, when working over a finite field, turns out to be an interesting Tutte polynomial evaluation.

Alcoved Polytopes I
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to study alcoved polytopes, which are polytopes arising from affine Coxeter arrangements. This class of convex polytopes includes many classical polytopes, for example, the hypersimplices. We compare two constructions of triangulations of hypersimplices due to Stanley and Sturmfels and explain them in terms of alcoved polytopes. We study triangulations of alcoved polytopes, the adjacency graphs of these triangulations, and give a combinatorial formula for volumes of these polytopes. In particular, we study a class of matroid polytopes, which we call the multi-hypersimplices.

Concerning the shape of a geometric lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known conjecture states that the Whitney numbers of the second kind of a geometric lattice (simple matroid) are logarithmically concave. We show this conjecture to be equivalent to proving an upper bound on the number of new copoints in the free erection of the associated simple matroid M. A bound on the number of these new copoints is given in terms of the copoints and colines of M. Also, the points-lines-planes conjecture is shown to be equivalent to a problem concerning the number subgraphs of a certain bipartite graph whose vertices are the points and lines of a geometric lattice.

The Tchebyshev transforms of the first and second kind
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, Volume 14, Number 2 (2010), 211-244 • View Publication • BIB
We give an in-depth study of the Tchebyshev transforms of the first and second kind of a poset, recently discovered by Hetyei. The Tchebyshev transform (of the first kind) preserves desirable combinatorial properties, including Eulerianess (due to Hetyei) and EL-shellability. It is also a linear transformation on flag vectors. When restricted to Eulerian posets, it corresponds to the Billera, Ehrenborg and Readdy omega map of oriented matroids. One consequence is that nonnegativity of the cd-index is maintained. The Tchebyshev transform of the second kind is a Hopf algebra endomorphism on the space of quasisymmetric functions QSym. It coincides with Stembridge's peak enumerator for Eulerian posets, but differs for general posets. The complete spectrum is determined, generalizing work of Billera, Hsiao and van Willigenburg. The type B quasisymmetric function of a poset is introduced. Like Ehrenborg's classical quasisymmetric function of a poset, this map is a comodule morphism with respect to the quasisymmetric functions QSym. Similarities among the omega map, Ehrenborg's r-signed Birkhoff transform, and the Tchebyshev transforms motivate a general study of chain maps. One such occurrence, the chain map of the second kind, is a Hopf algebra endomorphism on the quasisymmetric functions QSym and is an instance of Aguiar, Bergeron and Sottile's result on the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras. In contrast, the chain map of the first kind is both an algebra map and a comodule endomorphism on the type B quasisymmetric functions BQSym.

The number of matroids on a finite set
In this paper we highlight some enumerative results concerning matroids of low rank and prove the tail-ends of various sequences involving the number of matroids on a finite set to be log-convex. We give a recursion for a new, slightly improved, lower bound on the number of rank-$r$ matroids on $n$ elements when $n=2^m-1$. We also prove an adjacent result showing the point-lines-planes conjecture to be true if and only if it is true for a special subcollection of matroids. Two new tables are also presented, giving the number of paving matroids on at most eight elements.

Intersection cohomology of hypertoric varieties
Published in Journal of Algebraic Geometry 16 (2007), 39-63 • View Publication • BIB
A hypertoric variety is a quaternionic analogue of a toric variety. Just as the topology of toric varieties is closely related to the combinatorics of polytopes, the topology of hypertoric varieties interacts richly with the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements and matroids. Using finite field methods, we obtain combinatorial descriptions of the Betti numbers of hypertoric varieties, both for ordinary cohomology in the smooth case and intersection cohomology in the singular case. We also introduce a conjectural ring structure on the intersection cohomology of a hypertoric variety.

Matroid polytopes, nested sets and Bergman fans
The tropical variety defined by linear equations with constant coefficients is the Bergman fan of the corresponding matroid. Building on a self-contained introduction to matroid polytopes, we present a geometric construction of the Bergman fan, and we discuss its relationship with the simplicial complex of nested sets in the lattice of flats. The Bergman complex is triangulated by the nested set complex, and the two complexes coincide if and only if every connected flat remains connected after contracting along any subflat. This sharpens a result of Ardila-Klivans who showed that the Bergman complex is triangulated by the order complex of the lattice of flats. The nested sets specify the De Concini-Procesi compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, while the Bergman fan specifies the tropical compactification. These two compactifications are almost equal, and we highlight the subtle differences.

Multi-Path Matroids
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2007 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the minor-closed, dual-closed class of multi-path matroids. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for computing the Tutte polynomial of a multi-path matroid, we describe their basis activities, and we prove some basic structural properties. Key elements of this work are two complementary perspectives we develop for these matroids: on the one hand, multi-path matroids are transversal matroids that have special types of presentations; on the other hand, the bases of multi-path matroids can be viewed as sets of lattice paths in certain planar diagrams.

A Broken Circuit Ring
Given a matroid M represented by a linear subspace L in n-space (equivalently by an arrangement of n hyperplanes in L), we define a graded ring R(L) which degenerates to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex for any choice of ordering of the ground set. In particular, R(L) is Cohen-Macaulay, and may be used to compute the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M. We give a geometric interpretation of Spec R(L), as well as a stratification indexed by the flats of M.

Representations of matroids and free resolutions for multigraded modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let K be a field, let R=K[x_1,..., x_m] be a polynomial ring with the standard Z^m-grading (multigrading), let L be a Noetherian multigraded R-module, and let F: E --> G be a finite free multigraded presentation of L over R. Given a choice S of a multihomogeneous basis of E, we construct an explicit canonical finite free multigraded resolution T(F, S) of the R-module L. In the case of monomial ideals our construction recovers the Taylor resolution. A main ingredient of our work is a new linear algebra construction of independent interest, which produces from a representation f over K of a matroid M a canonical finite complex of finite dimensional K-vector spaces T(f) that is a resolution of Ker(f). We also show that the length of T(f) and the dimensions of its components are combinatorial invariants of the matroid M, and are independent of the representation map f.

A unique factorization theorem for matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorial, algebraic and geometric properties of the free product operation on matroids. After giving cryptomorphic definitions of free product in terms of independent sets, bases, circuits, closure, flats and rank function, we show that free product, which is a noncommutative operation, is associative and respects matroid duality. The free product of matroids $M$ and $N$ is maximal with respect to the weak order among matroids having $M$ as a submatroid, with complementary contraction equal to $N$. Any minor of the free product of $M$ and $N$ is a free product of a repeated truncation of the corresponding minor of $M$ with a repeated Higgs lift of the corresponding minor of $N$. We characterize, in terms of their cyclic flats, matroids that are irreducible with respect to free product, and prove that the factorization of a matroid into a free product of irreducibles is unique up to isomorphism. We use these results to determine, for K a field of characteristic zero, the structure of the minor coalgebra $\cal C$ of a family of matroids $\cal M$ that is closed under formation of minors and free products: namely, $\cal C$ is cofree, cogenerated by the set of irreducible matroids belonging to $\cal M$.

The Free product of Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a noncommutative binary operation on matroids, called free product. We show that this operation respects matroid duality, and has the property that, given only the cardinalities, an ordered pair of matroids may be recovered, up to isomorphism, from its free product. We use these results to give a short proof of Welsh's 1969 conjecture, which provides a progressive lower bound for the number of isomorphism classes of matroids on an n-element set.

A free subalgebra of the algebra of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is an initial inquiry into the structure of the Hopf algebra of matroids with restriction-contraction coproduct. Using a family of matroids introduced by Crapo in 1965, we show that the subalgebra generated by a single point and a single loop in the dual of this Hopf algebra is free.

Lower bounds for h-vectors of k-CM, independence and broken circuit complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a number of lower bounds for the h-vectors of k-CM, broken circuit and independence complexes. These lead to bounds on the coefficients of the characteristic and reliability polynomials of matroids. The main techniques are the use of series and parallel constructions on matroids and the short simplicial h-vector for pure complexes.

Remarks on one combinatorial application of the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities
In 1981, Stanley applied the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities to prove a logarithmic concavity theorem for regular matroids. Using ideas from electrical network theory we prove a generalization of this for the wider class of matroids with the ``half-plane property''. Then we explore a nest of inequalities for weighted basis-generating polynomials that are related to these ideas. As a first result from this investigation we find that every matroid of rank three or corank three satisfies a condition only slightly weaker than the conclusion of Stanley's theorem.
