The $\s$-Eulerian polynomials have only real roots

We study the roots of generalized Eulerian polynomials via a novel approach. We interpret Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of a statistic over inversion sequences. Inversion sequences (also known as Lehmer codes or subexcedant functions) were recently generalized by Savage and Schuster, to arbitrary sequences $\s$ of positive integers, which they called $\s$-inversion sequences.
Our object of study is the generating polynomial of the {\em ascent} statistic over the set of $\s$-inversion sequences of length $n$. Since this ascent statistic over inversion sequences is equidistributed with the descent statistic over permutations we call this generalized polynomial the \emph{$\s$-Eulerian polynomial}. The main result of this paper is that, for any sequence $\s$ of positive integers, the $\s$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots.
This result is first shown to generalize many existing results about the real-rootedness of various Eulerian polynomials. We then show that it can be used to settle a conjecture of Brenti, that Eulerian polynomials for all finite Coxeter groups have only real roots. It is then extended to several $q$-analogs. We also show that the MacMahon--Carlitz $q$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots whenever $q$ is a positive real number confirming a conjecture of Chow and Gessel. The same holds true for the $(\des,\finv)$-generating polynomials and also for the $(\des,\fmaj)$-generating polynomials for the hyperoctahedral group and the wreath product groups, confirming further conjectures of Chow and Gessel, and Chow and Mansour, respectively.

In this paper we produce a generating function for the number of hyperelliptic curves (up to translation) on a polarized Abelian surfaces using the crepant resolution conjecture and the Yau-Zaslow formula. We present a formula to compute these in terms of MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions, and prove that they are quasi-modular forms.
Computing with rational symmetric functions and applications to invariant theory and PI-algebras
Let the formal power series f in d variables with coefficients in an arbitrary field be a symmetric function decomposed as a series of Schur functions, and let f be a rational function whose denominator is a product of binomials of the form (1 - monomial). We use a classical combinatorial method of Elliott of 1903 further developed in the Partition Analysis of MacMahon in 1916 to compute the generating function of the multiplicities (i.e., the coefficients) of the Schur functions in the expression of f. It is a rational function with denominator of a similar form as f. We apply the method to several problems on symmetric algebras, as well as problems in classical invariant theory, algebras with polynomial identities, and noncommutative invariant theory.

Following the method of combinatorial telescoping for alternating sums given by Chen, Hou and Mu, we present a combinatorial telescoping approach to partition identities on sums of positive terms. By giving a classification of the combinatorial objects corresponding to a sum of positive terms, we establish bijections that lead a telescoping relation. We illustrate this idea by giving a combinatorial telescoping relation for a classical identity of MacMahon. Recently, Andrews posed a problem of finding a combinatorial proof of an identity on the q-little Jacobi polynomials which was derived based on a recurrence relation. We find a combinatorial classification of certain triples of partitions and a sequence of bijections. By the method of cancelation, we see that there exists an involution for a recurrence relation that implies the identity of Andrews.
On the asymptotics of higher-dimensional partitions

We conjecture that the asymptotic behavior of the numbers of solid (three-dimensional) partitions is identical to the asymptotics of the three-dimensional MacMahon numbers. Evidence is provided by an exact enumeration of solid partitions of all integers <=68 whose numbers are reproduced with surprising accuracy using the asymptotic formula (with one free parameter) and better accuracy on increasing the number of free parameters. We also conjecture that similar behavior holds for higher-dimensional partitions and provide some preliminary evidence for four and five-dimensional partitions.

In a series of papers, George Andrews and various coauthors successfully revitalized seemingly forgotten, powerful machinery based on MacMahon's $Ω$ operator to systematically compute generating functions $\sum_{\la \in P} z_1^{\la_1}...z_n^{\la_n}$ for some set $P$ of integer partitions $\la = (\la_1,..., \la_n)$. Our goal is to geometrically prove and extend many of the Andrews et al theorems, by realizing a given family of partitions as the set of integer lattice points in a certain polyhedron.

We investigate a relationship between MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. This determines a recurrence relation to compute these functions, as well as proving a conjecture of MacMahon about their general form by relating them to quasi-modular forms. These functions arise as solutions to a curve-counting problem on Abelian surfaces.

We construct the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the homogeneous space (Cartan domain) D_4=SO(4,2)/(SO(4)\times SO(2)) of the conformal group SO(4,2) (locally isomorphic to SU(2,2)) in 1+3 dimensions. The manifold D_4 can be mapped one-to-one onto the future tube domain C^4_+ of the complex Minkowski space through a Cayley transformation, where other kind of (electromagnetic) wavelets have already been proposed in the literature. We study the unitary irreducible representations of the conformal group on the Hilbert spaces L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ) and L^2_h(C^4_+,d\tildeν_λ) of square integrable holomorphic functions with scale dimension λand continuous mass spectrum, prove the isomorphism (equivariance) between both Hilbert spaces, admissibility and tight-frame conditions, provide reconstruction formulas and orthonormal basis of homogeneous polynomials and discuss symmetry properties and the Euclidean limit of the proposed conformal wavelets. For that purpose, we firstly state and prove a λ-extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem (SMT), which turns out to be a useful mathematical tool for us, particularly as a generating function for the unitary-representation functions of the conformal group and for the derivation of the reproducing (Bergman) kernel of L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ). SMT is related to MacMahon's Master Theorem (MMT) and an extension of both in terms of Louck's SU(N) solid harmonics is also provided for completeness. Convergence conditions are also studied.

We prove an analogue of the MacMahon Master Theorem for the right quantum superalgebras. In particular, we obtain a new and simple proof of this theorem for the right quantum algebras. In the super case the theorem is then used to construct higher order Sugawara operators for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ in an explicit form. The operators are elements of a completed universal enveloping algebra of $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ at the critical level. They occur as the coefficients in the expansion of a noncommutative Berezinian and as the traces of powers of generator matrices. The same construction yields higher Hamiltonians for the Gaudin model associated with the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. We also use the Sugawara operators to produce algebraically independent generators of the algebra of singular vectors of any generic Verma module at the critical level over the affine Lie superalgebra.
A Bijective Proof of a Major Index Theorem of Garsia and Gessel

In this paper we provide a bijective proof of a theorem of Garsia and Gessel describing the generating function of the major index over the set of all permutations of [n]={1,...,n} which are shuffles of given disjoint ordered sequences whose union is [n]. Two special cases are singled out: If the single element j is inserted into any permutation P of the remaining elements of [n], then the theorem states that inserting j into P increases the major index of P by some element of {0,1,...,n-1}, the increase determined uniquely by the index of insertion. We provide a direct proof of this fact using an algorithm which calculates the increase at each index; this in turn leads to a bijective proof of MacMahon's 1916 result on the equidistribution of major index and inversion number over S_n. Using this special case we prove the general case of the theorem by establishing a bijection between shuffles of ordered sequences and a certain set of partitions. In the second special case of interest, Garsia and Gessel's theorem provides a proof of the equidistribution of major index and inversion number over inverse descent classes, a result first proved bijectively by Foata and Schutzenberger in 1978. We provide, based on the method of our first proof, another bijective proof of this result.
q-Distributions on boxed plane partitions

We introduce elliptic weights of boxed plane partitions and prove that they give rise to a generalization of MacMahon's product formula for the number of plane partitions in a box. We then focus on the most general positive degenerations of these weights that are related to orthogonal polynomials; they form three two-dimensional families. For distributions from these families we prove two types of results.
First, we construct explicit Markov chains that preserve these distributions. In particular, this leads to a relatively simple exact sampling algorithm.
Second, we consider a limit when all dimensions of the box grow and plane partitions become large, and prove that the local correlations converge to those of ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. For fixed proportions of the box, the slopes of the limiting Gibbs measures (that can also be viewed as slopes of tangent planes to the hypothetical limit shape) are encoded by a single quadratic polynomial.

We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which specialize to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising $q$-analog of a classical formula of Euler for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. This $q$-analog computes the joint distribution of excedance number and major index, the only of the four important Euler-Mahonian distributions that had not yet been computed. Our study of the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions also yields results that include the descent statistic and refine results of Gessel and Reutenauer. We also obtain $q$-analogs, $(q,p)$-analogs and quasisymmetric function analogs of classical results on the symmetry and unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts including MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes, Stanley's work on chromatic symmetric functions, and the work of the authors on the homology of a certain poset introduced by Björner and Welker.

MacMahon's classic generating function of random plane partitions, which is related to Schur polynomials, was recently extended by Vuletic to a generating function of weighted plane partitions that is related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials, S(t), and further to one related to Macdonald polynomials, S(t,q).
Using Jing's 1-parameter deformation of charged free fermions, we obtain a Fock space derivation of the Hall-Littlewood extension. Confining the plane partitions to a finite s-by-s square base, we show that the resulting generating function, S_{s-by-s}(t), is an evaluation of a tau-function of KP.
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and poset topology
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which have the property of specializing to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising $q$-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts such as in MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, in work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes and in Stanley's work on symmetric chromatic polynomials. Here we present yet another occurence in connection with the homology of a poset introduced by Björner and Welker.

We study statistics on ordered set partitions whose generating functions are related to $p,q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. The main purpose of this paper is to provide bijective proofs of all the conjectures of \stein (Arxiv:math.CO/0605670). Our basic idea is to encode ordered partitions by a kind of path diagrams and explore the rich combinatorial properties of the latter structure. We also give a partition version of MacMahon's theorem on the equidistribution of the statistics inversion number and major index on words.

We generalize the generating formula for plane partitions known as MacMahon's formula as well as its analog for strict plane partitions. We give a 2-parameter generalization of these formulas related to Macdonald's symmetric functions. The formula is especially simple in the Hall-Littlewood case. We also give a bijective proof of the analog of MacMahon's formula for strict plane partitions.
