The extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality

A classical result of Kahn and Saks states that given any partially ordered set with two distinguished elements, the number of linear extensions in which the ranks of the distinguished elements differ by $k$ is log-concave as a function of $k$. The log-concave sequences that can arise in this manner prove to exhibit a much richer structure, however, than is evident from log-concavity alone. The main result of this paper is a complete characterization of the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality: we obtain a detailed combinatorial understanding of where and what kind of geometric progressions can appear in these log-concave sequences. This settles a partial conjecture of Chan-Pak-Panova, while the analysis uncovers new extremals that were not previously conjectured. The proof relies on a much more general geometric mechanism -- a hard Lefschetz theorem for nef classes that was obtained in the setting of convex polytopes by Shenfeld and Van Handel -- which forms a model for the investigation of such structures in other combinatorial problems.

Duchamp--Hivert--Thibon introduced the construction of a right $H_n(0)$-module, denoted as $M_P$, for any partial order $P$ on the set $[n]$. This module is defined by specifying a suitable action of $H_n(0)$ on the set of linear extensions of $P$. In this paper, we refer to this module as the poset module associated with $P$. Firstly, we show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ has a Hopf algebra structure that is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, where $\mathscr{P}(n)$ is the full subcategory of $\textbf{mod-}H_n(0)$ whose objects are direct sums of finitely many isomorphic copies of poset modules and $G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ is the Grothendieck group of $\mathscr{P}(n)$. We also demonstrate how (anti-)automorphism twists interact with these modules, the induction product and restrictions. Secondly, we investigate the (type 1) quasisymmetric power sum expansion of some quasi-analogues $Y_α$ of Schur functions, where $α$ is a composition. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the $P$-partition generating functions of specific posets, which allows us to utilize the result established by Liu--Weselcouch. Additionally, we provide a new algorithm for obtaining these posets. Using these findings, for the dual immaculate function and the extended Schur function, we express the coefficients appearing in the quasisymmetric power sum expansions in terms of border strip tableaux.
Computational complexity of counting coincidences

Can you decide if there is a coincidence in the numbers counting two different combinatorial objects? For example, can you decide if two regions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have the same number of domino tilings? There are two versions of the problem, with $2\times 1 \times 1$ and $2\times 2 \times 1$ boxes. We prove that in both cases the coincidence problem is not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level. While the conclusions are the same, the proofs are notably different and generalize in different directions.
We proceed to explore the coincidence problem for counting independent sets and matchings in graphs, matroid bases, order ideals and linear extensions in posets, permutation patterns, and the Kronecker coefficients. We also make a number of conjectures for counting other combinatorial objects such as plane triangulations, contingency tables, standard Young tableaux, reduced factorizations and the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients.
The Cactus Group Property for Ordinal Sums of Disjoint Unions of Chains
We study the action of Bender-Knuth involutions on linear extensions of posets and identify LE-cactus posets, i.e. those for which the cactus relations hold. It was conjectured in \cite{chiang2023bender} that d-complete posets are LE-cactus. Among the non-d-complete posets that are LE-cactus, one notable family is ordinal sums of antichains. In this paper, we characterize the LE-cactus posets in a more general family, namely ordinal sums of disjoint unions of chains.

We prove a weak version of the cross--product conjecture: ${F}(k+1,\ell) {F}(k,\ell+1) \geq (\frac12+\varepsilon) {F}(k,\ell) {F}(k+1,\ell+1)$, where ${F}(k,\ell)$ is the number of linear extensions for which the values at fixed elements $x,y,z$ are $k$ and $\ell$ apart, respectively, and where $\varepsilon>0$ depends on the poset. We also prove the converse inequality and disprove the {generalized cross--product conjecture}. The proofs use geometric inequalities for mixed volumes and combinatorics of words.
Vertex-shellings of Euclidean Oriented Matroids
A Euclidean oriented matroid program yields a partial ordering of the cocircuits of its cocircuit graph. We show that every linear extension of that ordering yields a topological sweep and induces a recursive atom-ordering (a shelling of the cocircuits) of the tope cell of the feasible region. We extend that sweep and obtain also a vertex-shelling of the whole oriented matroid and finally describe some connections to the notion of stackable zontopal tilings and to a counterexample of a conjecture of A. Mandel.
Posets of width two and skew Young diagrams
Let $P$ be a finite poset of width two, i.e., with no three-element antichain. We associate with $P$ a skew Young diagram $Υ(P)$ and discuss some of the properties of the map $Υ$. In particular, if we regard $Υ(P)$ as a poset in a standard way, then the linear extensions of $P$ are in bijection with the order ideals of $Υ(P)$.
Characterisation of the big Ramsey degrees of the generic partial order

As a result of 33 intercontinental Zoom calls, we characterise big Ramsey degrees of the generic partial order. This is an infinitary extension of the well known fact that finite partial orders endowed with linear extensions form a Ramsey class (this result was announced by Nešetřil and Rödl in 1984 with first published proof by Paoli, Trotter and Walker in 1985). Towards this, we refine earlier upper bounds obtained by Hubička based on a new connection of big Ramsey degrees to the Carlson-Simpson theorem and we also introduce a new technique of giving lower bounds using an iterated application of the upper-bound theorem.

We study the permutation group $\mathcal{BK}_P$ generated by Bender-Knuth moves on linear extensions of a poset $P$, an analog of the Berenstein-Kirillov group on column-strict tableaux. We explore the group relations, with an emphasis on identifying posets $P$ for which the cactus relations hold in $\mathcal{BK}_P$. We also examine $\mathcal{BK}_P$ as a subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{\mathcal{L}(P)}$ on the set of linear extensions of $P$ with the focus on analyzing posets $P$ for which $\mathcal{BK}_P = \mathfrak{S}_{\mathcal{L}(P)}$.
Hopf-algebraic structures on mixed graphs
We introduce two coproducts on mixed graphs (that is to say graphs with both oriented and unoriented edges), the first one by separation of the vertices into two parts, and the second one given by contraction and extractions of subgraphs. We show that, with the disjoint union product, this gives a double bialgebra, that is to say that the first coproduct makes it a Hopf algebra in the category of right comodules over the second coproduct. This structure implies the existence of a unique polynomial invariant on mixed graphs compatible with the product and both coproducts: we prove that it is the (strong) chromatic polynomial of Beck, Bogart and Pham.Using the action of the monoid of characters, we relate it to the weak chromatic polynomial, as well to Ehrhart polynomials and to a polynomial invariants related to linear extensions. As applications, we give an algebraic proof of the link between the values of the strong chromatic polynomial at negative values and acyclic orientations (a result due to Beck, Blado, Crawford, Jean-Louis and Young) and obtain a combinatorial description of the antipode of the Hopf algebra of mixed graphs.

Motivated by the Lam--Pylyavskyy inequalities for Schur functions, we give a far reaching multivariate generalization of Fishburn's correlation inequality for the number of linear extensions of posets. We then give a multivariate generalization of the Daykin--Daykin--Paterson inequality proving log-concavity of the order polynomial of a poset. We also prove a multivariate $P$-partition version of the cross-product inequality by Brightwell--Felsner--Trotter. The proofs are based on a multivariate generalization of the Ahlswede--Daykin inequality.

We prove that linear extensions of the Bruhat order of a matroid are shelling orders and that the barycentric subdivision of a matroid is a Coxeter matroid, viewing barycentric subdivisions as subsets of a parabolic quotient of a symmetric group. A similar result holds for order ideals in minuscule quotients of symmetric groups and in their barycentric subdivisions. Moreover, we apply promotion and evacuation for labeled graphs of Malvenuto and Reutenauer to dual graphs of simplicial complexes, providing promotion and evacuation of shelling orders.

We employ the combinatorial atlas technology to prove new correlation inequalities for the number of linear extensions of finite posets. These include the approximate independence of probabilities and expectations of values of random linear extensions, closely related to Stanley's inequality. We also give applications to the numbers of standard Young tableaux and to Euler numbers.
The extremals of Stanley's inequalities for partially ordered sets

Stanley's inequalities for partially ordered sets establish important log-concavity relations for sequences of linear extensions counts. Their extremals however, i.e., the equality cases of these inequalities, were until now poorly understood with even conjectures lacking. In this work, we solve this problem by providing a complete characterization of the extremals of Stanley's inequalities. Our proof is based on building a new ``dictionary" between the combinatorics of partially ordered sets and the geometry of convex polytopes, which captures their extremal structures.
Maximal chain descent orders
This paper introduces a partial order on the maximal chains of any finite bounded poset $P$ which has a CL-labeling $λ$. We call this the maximal chain descent order induced by $λ$, denoted $P_λ(2)$. As a first example, letting $P$ be the Boolean lattice and $λ$ its standard EL-labeling gives $P_λ(2)$ isomorphic to the weak order of type A. We discuss in depth other seemingly well-structured examples: the max-min EL-labeling of the partition lattice gives maximal chain descent order isomorphic to a partial order on certain labeled trees, and particular cases of the linear extension EL-labelings of finite distributive lattices produce maximal chain descent orders isomorphic to partial orders on standard Young tableaux. We observe that the order relations which one might expect to be the cover relations, those given by the "polygon moves" whose transitive closure defines the maximal chain descent order, are not always cover relations. Several examples illustrate this fact. Nonetheless, we characterize the EL-labelings for which every polygon move gives a cover relation, and we prove many well known EL-labelings do have the expected cover relations. One motivation for $P_λ(2)$ is that its linear extensions give all of the shellings of the order complex of $P$ whose restriction maps are defined by the descents with respect to $λ$. This yields strictly more shellings of $P$ than the lexicographic ones induced by $λ$. Thus, the maximal chain descent order $P_λ(2)$ might be thought of as encoding the structure of the set of shellings induced by $λ$.
Queue Layouts of Two-Dimensional Posets

The queue number of a poset is the queue number of its cover graph when the vertex order is a linear extension of the poset. Heath and Pemmaraju conjectured that every poset of width $w$ has queue number at most $w$. The conjecture has been confirmed for posets of width $w=2$ and for planar posets with $0$ and $1$. In contrast, the conjecture has been refused by a family of general (non-planar) posets of width $w>2$.
In this paper, we study queue layouts of two-dimensional posets. First, we construct a two-dimensional poset of width $w > 2$ with queue number $2(w - 1)$, thereby disproving the conjecture for two-dimensional posets. Second, we show an upper bound of $w(w+1)/2$ on the queue number of such posets, thus improving the previously best-known bound of $(w-1)^2+1$ for every $w > 3$.
On Promotion and Quasi-tangled Labelings of Posets

In 2022, Defant and Kravitz introduced extended promotion (denoted $\partial$), a map that acts on the set of labelings of a poset. Extended promotion is a generalization of Schützenberger's promotion operator, a well-studied map that permutes the set of linear extensions of a poset. It is known that if $L$ is a labeling of an $n$-element poset $P$, then $\partial^{n-1}(L)$ is a linear extension. This allows us to regard $\partial$ as a sorting operator on the set of all labelings of $P$, where we think of the linear extensions of $P$ as the labelings which have been sorted. The labelings requiring $n-1$ applications of $\partial$ to be sorted are called tangled; the labelings requiring $n-2$ applications are called quasi-tangled. In addition to computing the sizes of the fibers of promotion for rooted tree posets, we count the quasi-tangled labelings of a relatively large class of posets called inflated rooted trees with deflated leaves. Given an $n$-element poset with a unique minimal element with the property that the minimal element has exactly one parent, it follows from the aforementioned enumeration that this poset has $2(n-1)!-(n-2)!$ quasi-tangled labelings. Using similar methods, we outline an algorithmic approach to enumerating the labelings requiring $n-k-1$ applications to be sorted for any fixed $k\in\{1,\ldots,n-2\}$. We also make partial progress towards proving a conjecture of Defant and Kravitz on the maximum possible number of tangled labelings of an $n$-element poset.
Linearizing Partial Search Orders

In recent years, questions about the construction of special orderings of a given graph search were studied by several authors. On the one hand, the so called end-vertex problem introduced by Corneil et al. in 2010 asks for search orderings ending in a special vertex. On the other hand, the problem of finding orderings that induce a given search tree was introduced already in the 1980s by Hagerup and received new attention most recently by Beisegel et al. Here, we introduce a generalization of some of these problems by studying the question whether there is a search ordering that is a linear extension of a given partial order on a graph's vertex set. We show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time on chordal bipartite graphs for LBFS, which also implies the first polynomial-time algorithms for the end-vertex problem and two search tree problems for this combination of graph class and search. Furthermore, we present polynomial-time algorithms for LBFS and MCS on split graphs which generalize known results for the end-vertex and search tree problems.

We explore inequalities on linear extensions of posets and make them effective in different ways. First, we study the Björner--Wachs inequality and generalize it to inequalities on order polynomials and their $q$-analogues via direct injections and FKG inequalities. Second, we give an injective proof of the Sidorenko inequality with computational complexity significance, namely that the difference is in $\#P$. Third, we generalize the Sidorenko inequality to posets with small chain intersections and give complexity theoretic applications.
Log-concave poset inequalities

We study combinatorial inequalities for various classes of set systems: matroids, polymatroids, poset antimatroids, and interval greedoids. We prove log-concavity inequalities for counting certain weighted feasible words, which generalize and extend several previous results establishing Mason conjectures for the numbers of independent sets of matroids. Notably, we prove matching equality conditions for both earlier inequalities and our extensions.
In contrast with much of the previous work, our proofs are combinatorial and employ nothing but linear algebra. We use the language formulation of greedoids which allows a linear algebraic setup, which in turn can be analyzed recursively. The underlying non-commutative nature of matrices associated with greedoids allows us to proceed beyond polymatroids and prove the equality conditions. As further application of our tools, we rederive both Stanley's inequality on the number of certain linear extensions, and its equality conditions, which we then also extend to the weighted case.
