Mathematics of Plott choice functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to a study of mathematical structures arising from choice functions satisfying the path independence property (Plott functions). We broaden the notion of a choice function by allowing of empty choice. This enables us to define a lattice structure on the set of Plott functions. Moreover, this lattice is functorially dependent on its base. We introduce a natural convex structure on the set of linear orders (or words) and show that Plott functions are in one-to-one correspondence with convex subsets in this set of linear orders. That correspondence is compatible with both lattice structures. Keywords: Convex geometries, shuffle, linear orders, lattices, direct image, path independence, convex structure

Supersolvable LL-lattices of binary trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Some posets of binary leaf-labeled trees are shown to be supersolvable lattices and explicit EL-labelings are given. Their characteristic polynomials are computed, recovering their known factorization in a different way.

A random tiling model for two dimensional electrostatics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider triangular holes on the hexagonal lattice and we study their interaction when the rest of the lattice is covered by dimers. More precisely, we analyze the joint correlation of these triangular holes in a ``sea'' of dimers. We determine the asymptotics of the joint correlation (for large separations between the holes) in the case when one of the holes has side 1, all remaining holes have side 2, and the holes are distributed symmetrically with respect to a symmetry axis. Our result has a striking physical interpretation. If we regard the holes as electrical charges, with charge equal to the difference between the number of down-pointing and up-pointing unit triangles in a hole, the logarithm of the joint correlation behaves exactly like the electrostatic potential energy of this two-dimensional electrostatic system: it is obtained by a Superposition Principle from the interaction of all pairs, and the pair interactions are according to Coulomb's law.
Determinantal Construction of Orthogonal Polynomials Associated with Root Systems
Published in Compositio Math, 140/2, 255--273 (2004) • View Publication • BIB
We consider semisimple triangular operators acting in the symmetric component of the group algebra over the weight lattice of a root system. We present a determinantal formula for the eigenbasis of such triangular operators. This determinantal formula gives rise to an explicit construction of the Macdonald polynomials and of the Heckman-Opdam generalized Jacobi polynomials.

Dimers on two-dimensional lattices
Published in Int. Jour. Mod. Phys. B 20, 5357-5371 (2006). • View Publication • BIB
We consider close-packed dimers, or perfect matchings, on two-dimensional regular lattices. We review known results and derive new expressions for the free energy, entropy, and the molecular freedom of dimers for a number of lattices including the simple-quartic (4^4), honeycomb (6^3), triangular (3^6), kagome (3.6.3.6), 3-12 (3.12^2) and its dual [3.12^2], and 4-8 (4.8^2) and its dual Union Jack [4.8^2] Archimedean tilings. The occurrence and nature of phase transitions are also analyzed and discussed.
Domino tilings and related models: space of configurations of domains with holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We first prove that the set of domino tilings of a fixed finite figure is a distributive lattice, even in the case when the figure has holes. We then give a geometrical interpretation of the order given by this lattice, using (not necessarily local) transformations called {\em flips}. This study allows us to formulate an exhaustive generation algorithm and a uniform random sampling algorithm. We finally extend these results to other types of tilings (calisson tilings, tilings with bicolored Wang tiles).

Free hyperplane arrangements associated to labeled rooted trees
Each labeled rooted tree is associated with a hyperplane arrangement, which is free with exponents given by the depths of the vertices of this tree. The intersection lattices of these arrangements are described through posets of forests. These posets are used to define coalgebras, whose dual algebras are shown to have a simple presentation by generators and relations.

An optimal algorithm to generate tilings
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article builds on Thurston's height functions. His tiling algorithm is reinterpreted using lattice theory and then generalized in order to generate any tiling of a hole-free region. Combined with a natural encoding of tilings by words, this allows the generation of a linear extension of the lattice of the tilings.

The six-dimensional Delaunay polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a lattice $L$, a full dimensional polytope $P$ is called a {\em Delaunay polytope} if the set of its vertices is $S\cap L$ with $S$ being an {\em empty sphere} of the lattice. Extending our previous work \cite{DD-hyp} on the {\em hypermetric cone} $HYP_7$, we classify the six-dimensional Delaunay polytopes according to their {\em combinatorial type}. The list of 6241 combinatorial types is obtained by a study of the set of faces of the polyhedral cone $HYP_7$.

The excedances and descents of bi-increasing permutations
Starting from some considerations we make about the relations between certain difference statistics and the classical permutation statistics we study permutations whose inversion number and excedance difference coincide. It turns out that these (so-called bi-increasing) permutations are just the 321-avoiding ones. The paper investigates their excedance and descent structure. In particular, we find some nice combinatorial interpretations for the distribution coefficients of the number of excedances and descents, respectively, and their difference analogues over the bi-increasing permutations in terms of parallelogram polyominoes and 2-Motzkin paths. This yields a connection between restricted permutations, parallelogram polyominoes, and lattice paths that reveals the relations between several well-known bijections given for these objects (e.g. by Delest-Viennot, Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Francon-Viennot, and Foata-Zeilberger). As an application, we enumerate skew diagrams according to their rank and give a simple combinatorial proof for a result concerning the symmetry of the joint distribution of the number of excedances and inversions, respectively, over the symmetric group.

An Upper Bound for the Number of Planar Lattice Triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove an exponential upper bound for the number $f(m,n)$ of all maximal triangulations of the $m\times n$ grid: \[ f(m,n) < 2^{3mn}. \] In particular, this improves a result of S. Yu. Orevkov (1999).

Combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography
Published in In: Quasicrystals - Structure and Physical Properties, ed. H.-R. Trebin (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2003), pp. 160-171 • Search Publication
Several combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography are reviewed with special emphasis on a unified approach, valid for both crystals and quasicrystals. In particular, we consider planar sublattices, similarity sublattices, coincidence sublattices, their module counterparts, and central and averaged shelling. The corresponding counting functions are encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, with explicit results for the triangular lattice and the twelvefold symmetric shield tiling. Other combinatorial properties are briefly summarised.

Walks confined in a quadrant are not always D-finite
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider planar lattice walks that start from a prescribed position, take their steps in a given finite subset of Z^2, and always stay in the quadrant x >= 0, y >= 0. We first give a criterion which guarantees that the length generating function of these walks is D-finite, that is, satisfies a linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients. This criterion applies, among others, to the ordinary square lattice walks. Then, we prove that walks that start from (1,1), take their steps in {(2,-1), (-1,2)} and stay in the first quadrant have a non-D-finite generating function. Our proof relies on a functional equation satisfied by this generating function, and on elementary complex analysis.

The cd-index of the Boolean lattice
We study some properties of the {\bf cd}-index of the Boolean lattice. They are extremely similar to the properties of the {\ab}-index, or equivalently, the flag $h$-vector of the Boolean lattice and hence may be viewed as their {\bf cd}-analogues. We define a different algebra structure on the polynomial algebra $k < \cv, \dv>$ and give a derivation on this algebra. It is of significance for the Boolean lattice and forms our main tool. Using similar methods, we also prove some results for the {\bf cd}-index of the cubical lattice. We show that the Dehn-Sommerville relations for the flag $f$-vector of an Eulerian poset are equivalent to certain simple identities that exist in our algebra.

Counting Lattice Triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the problem to count, or, more modestly, to estimate the number f(m,n) of unimodular triangulations of the planar grid of size $m\times n$. Among other tools, we employ recursions that allow one to compute the (huge) number of triangulations for small m and rather large n by dynamic programming; we show that this computation can be done in polynomial time if m is fixed, and present computational results from our implementation of this approach. We also present new upper and lower bounds for large m and n, and we report about results obtained from a computer simulation of the random walk that is generated by flips.

Lattice path matroids: enumerative aspects and Tutte polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2003 • View Publication • BIB
Fix two lattice paths P and Q from (0,0) to (m,r) that use East and North steps with P never going above Q. We show that the lattice paths that go from (0,0) to (m,r) and that remain in the region bounded by P and Q can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call a lattice path matroid. We consider a variety of enumerative aspects of these matroids and we study three important matroid invariants, namely the Tutte polynomial and, for special types of lattice path matroids, the characteristic polynomial and the beta invariant. In particular, we show that the Tutte polynomial is the generating function for two basic lattice path statistics and we show that certain sequences of lattice path matroids give rise to sequences of Tutte polynomials for which there are relatively simple generating functions. We show that Tutte polynomials of lattice path matroids can be computed in polynomial time. Also, we obtain a new result about lattice paths from an analysis of the beta invariant of certain lattice path matroids.

Short rational generating functions for lattice point problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for any fixed d the generating function of the projection of the set of integer points in a rational d-dimensional polytope can be computed in polynomial time. As a corollary, we deduce that various interesting sets of lattice points, notably integer semigroups and (minimal) Hilbert bases of rational cones, have short rational generating functions provided certain parameters (the dimension and the number of generators) are fixed. It follows then that many computational problems for such sets (for example, finding the number of positive integers not representable as a non-negative integer combination of given coprime positive integers a_1 ... a_d admit polynomial time algorithms. We also discuss a related problem of computing the Hilbert series of a ring generated by monomials.

Poset Edge-Labellings and Left Modularity
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 27 (1) (2006), 101-113 • View Publication • BIB
It is known that a graded lattice of rank n is supersolvable if and only if it has an EL-labelling where the labels along any maximal chain are exactly the numbers 1,2,...,n without repetition. These labellings are called S_n EL-labellings, and having such a labelling is also equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. In the case of an ungraded lattice, there is a natural extension of S_n EL-labellings, called interpolating labellings. We show that admitting an interpolating labelling is again equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. Furthermore, we work in the setting of a general bounded poset as all the above results generalize to this case. We conclude by applying our results to show that the lattice of non-straddling partitions, which is not graded in general, has a maximal chain of left modular elements.

The degree distribution in bipartite planar maps: applications to the Ising model
We characterize the generating function of bipartite planar maps counted according to the degree distribution of their black and white vertices. This result is applied to the solution of the hard particle and Ising models on random planar lattices. We thus recover and extend some results previously obtained by means of matrix integrals. Proofs are purely combinatorial and rely on the idea that planar maps are conjugacy classes of trees. In particular, these trees explain why the solutions of the Ising and hard particle models on maps of bounded degree are always algebraic.

Higher Lawrence configurations
Published in J. Combin. Theory, Ser. A. 103:1 (2003), 151-164. • View Publication • BIB
Any configuration of lattice vectors gives rise to a hierarchy of higher-dimensional configurations which generalize the Lawrence construction in geometric combinatorics. We prove finiteness results for the Markov bases, Graver bases and face posets of these configurations, and we discuss applications to the statistical theory of log-linear models.
