Stochastically Evolving Graphs via Edit Semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate a randomly evolving process of subgraphs in an underlying host graph using the spectral theory of semigroups related to the Tsetlin library and hyperplane arrangements. Starting with some initial subgraph, at each iteration, we apply a randomly selected edit to the current subgraph. Such edits vary in nature from simple edits consisting of adding or deleting an edge, or compound edits which can affect several edges at once. This evolving process generates a random walk on the set of all possible subgraphs of the host graph. We show that the eigenvalues of this random walk can be naturally indexed by subsets of edges of the host graph. We also provide, in the case of simple edits, a closed-form formula for the eigenvectors of the transition probability matrix and a sharp bound for the rate of convergence of this random walk. We consider extensions to the case of compound edits; examples of this model include the previously studied Moran forest model and a dynamic random intersection graph model. Evolving graphs arise in a variety of fields ranging from deep learning and graph neural networks to epidemic modeling and social networks. Our random evolving process serves as a general stochastic model for sampling random subgraphs from a given graph.

Reconstrucion of oriented matroids from Varchenko-Gelfand algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The algebra of $R$-valued functions on the set of chambers of a real hyperplane arrangement is called the Varchenko-Gelfand (VG) algebra. This algebra carries a natural filtration by the degree with respect to Heaviside functions, giving rise to the associated graded VG algebra. When the coefficient ring $R$ is an integral domain of characteristic $2$, the graded VG algebra is known to be isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra. In this paper, we study VG algebras over coefficient rings of characteristic different from $2$, and investigate to what extent VG algebras determine the underlying oriented matroid structures. Our main results concern hyperplane arrangements that are generic in codimension $2$. For such arrangements, if $R$ is an integral domain of characteristic not equal to $2$, then the oriented matroid can be recovered from both the filtered and the graded VG algebras. As a byproduct, we prove that, unlike the complexification, the cohomology ring of the complement of a $3$-plexification of a real arrangement is not determined by the intersection lattice. We also formulate an algorithm that is expected to reconstruct oriented matroids from VG algebras in the case of general arrangements.

Addition theorems for Ziegler pairs of hyperplane arrangements
Inspired by Terao's freeness conjecture, we examine Ziegler pairs, which are pairs of hyperplane arrangements that share the same underlying matroid but have different modules of logarithmic derivations. In this paper, we present a general construction that yields the first known families of Ziegler pairs in arbitrary dimension and size, starting from examples in the complex projective plane.

Exponents of $2$-multiarrangements and Wakefield--Yuzvinsky matrices
In the theory of hyperplane arrangements, M. Wakefield and S. Yuzvinsky utilized a square matrix in their research on the exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements. Using such a matrix, they showed that the exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements are as close as possible in general position for any fixed balanced multiplicity. In this article, we introduce a matrix similar to that of Wakefield and Yuzvinsky and explore its further application to the exponents. In fact, exponents of $2$-dimensional multiarrangements are calculated by verifying whether the corresponding matrices have full rank. As the main result, we introduce a new class of $2$-dimensional arrangements with an explicit sequence of multiplicities for which the exponents are closest. We also provide an alternative proof for some known results on exponents.
Characteristic quasi-polynomials of deletions of Shi arrangements of type C and type D
Characteristic quasi-polynomials enumerate the number of points in the complement of hyperplane arrangements modulo positive integers. In this paper, we compute the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the restrictions of the Shi arrangements of type C and type D by one given hyperplane, respectively. The case of type C is established by extending the method developed in our previous work on type B (\cite{HN2024}), while the case of type D is deduced through a direct connection with the results on type B. As a corollary, we determine whether period collapse occurs in the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the deletions of the Shi arrangements of type C and type D.

The $K(π, 1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups
In this summary paper, we present the key ideas behind the recent proof of the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups, which states that complements of locally finite affine hyperplane arrangements with real equations and stable under orthogonal reflections are aspherical. We survey three facets of the argument: the combinatorics of noncrossing partition posets associated with Coxeter groups; the appearance of dual Artin groups and the question of their isomorphism with standard Artin groups; the topological models and their interplay in the proof.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions for signed graphs
In 1995, Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, which specializes to its chromatic polynomial, and which has been the focus of intense research. In 2017, Shareshian, Wachs, and Ellzey defined a refinement of this function for a directed graph, that appears to be in $QSym$, the algebra of quasisymmetric functions, which is of great interest in algebraic combinatorics. Our goal is to extend this work to signed graphs, taking into account the perspective of the hyperplane arrangement associated with a signed graph, developed by Zaslavsky. We introduce the signed chromatic quasisymmetric invariant, and obtain structural properties. As a consequence, we define and study $SQSym$, the algebra of signed quasisymmetric functions.
Hamiltonian Cycles in Simplicial and Supersolvable Hyperplane Arrangements
Motivated by the Gray code interpretation of Hamiltonian cycles in Cayley graphs, we investigate the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in tope graphs of hyperplane arrangements, with a focus on simplicial, reflection, and supersolvable arrangements. We confirm Hamiltonicity for all 3-dimensional simplicial arrangements listed in the Grünbaum--Cuntz catalogue. Extending earlier results by Conway, Sloane, and Wilks, we prove that all restrictions of finite reflection arrangements, including all Weyl groupoids and crystallographic arrangements, admit Hamiltonian cycles. Finally, we further establish that all supersolvable hyperplane arrangements and supersolvable oriented matroids have Hamiltonian cycles, offering a constructive proof based on their inductive structure.

The characteristic quasi-polynomials of hyperplane arrangements with actions of finite groups
In this paper, we introduce an equivariant version of the characteristic quasi-polynomials as the permutation characters on the complement of mod $q$ hyperplane arrangements. We prove that the permutation character is a quasi-polynomial in $q$, and show that it can be expressed by the sum of the induced characters of an equivariant version of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. Furthermore, we consider the case of the Coxeter arrangements, and compute in detail for type $A_\ell$.
Notes on the cohomology of partial Hessenberg varieties
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of full flag varieties. This family contains well-known varieties such as Springer fibers, Peterson varieties, and permutohedral varieties. It was introduced by De Mari-Procesi-Shayman in 1992 and has been actively studied in this decade. In particular, unexpected relations to hyperplane arrangements and the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in graph theory have been discovered. Hessenberg varieties can be defined in partial flag varieties. In this paper, we study their cohomology by relating them to the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties in the full flag varieties.
Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. VII. Supersolvable hyperplane arrangements

For an arrangement $\mathcal{H}$ of hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ through the origin, a region is a connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\mathcal{H}$. The graph of regions $G(\mathcal{H})$ has a vertex for every region, and an edge between any two vertices whose corresponding regions are separated by a single hyperplane from $\mathcal{H}$. We aim to compute a Hamiltonian path or cycle in the graph $G(\mathcal{H})$, i.e., a path or cycle that visits every vertex (=region) exactly once. Our first main result is that if $\mathcal{H}$ is a supersolvable arrangement, then the graph of regions $G(\mathcal{H})$ has a Hamiltonian cycle. More generally, we consider quotients of lattice congruences of the poset of regions $P(\mathcal{H},R_0)$, obtained by orienting the graph $G(\mathcal{H})$ away from a particular base region $R_0$. Our second main result is that if $\mathcal{H}$ is supersolvable and $R_0$ is a canonical base region, then for any lattice congruence $\equiv$ on $P(\mathcal{H},R_0)=:L$, the cover graph of the quotient lattice $L/\equiv$ has a Hamiltonian path. Strata of toric hyperplane arrangements, zonotope lattice points, and the Bondal-Thomsen collection
We show that strata of oriented toric hyperplane arrangements are in bijection with a collection of lattice points in a zonotope. Moreover, we relate the dimension of the stratum and the dimension of the minimal face of the zonotope containing the corresponding lattice point. We discuss how this correspondence is related to toric varieties and the Bondal-Thomsen generators of their derived categories.
Salvetti complexes for conditional oriented matroids
We give a new proof of the fact that the complement of the complexification of a real hyperplane arrangement is homotopy equivalent to the Salvetti complex of the associated oriented matroid. Our proof involves no choices, is relatively easy to visualize, and generalizes to the setting of conditional oriented matroids.

Adjoints of Polytopes: Determinantal Representations and Smoothness
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we study determinantal representations of adjoint hypersurfaces of polytopes. We prove that adjoint polynomials of all polygons can be represented as determinants of tridiagonal symmetric matrices of linear forms with the matrix size being equal to the degree of the adjoint. We prove a sufficient combinatorial condition for a surface in the projective three-space to have a determinantal representation and use it to show that adjoints of all three-dimensional polytopes with at most eight facets and a simple facet hyperplane arrangement admit a determinantal representation. This includes all such polytopes with a smooth adjoint. We demonstrate that, starting from four dimensions, adjoint hypersurfaces may not admit linear determinantal representations. Along the way we prove that, starting from three dimensions, adjoint hypersurfaces are typically singular, in contrast to the two-dimensional case. We also consider a special case of interest to physics, the ABHY associahedron. We construct a determinantal representation of its universal adjoint in three dimensions and show that in higher dimensions a similarly structured representation does not exist.

Arithmetic non-very generic arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
A discriminantal hyperplane arrangement B(n,k,A) is constructed from a given (generic) hyperplane arrangement A, which is classified as either very generic or non-very generic depending on the combinatorial structure of B(n,k,A). In particular, A is considered non-very generic if the intersection lattice of B(n,k,A) contains at least one non-very generic intersection -- that is, an intersection that fails to satisfy a specific rank condition established by Athanasiadis in [1]. In this paper, we present arithmetic criteria characterizing non-very generic intersections in discriminantal arrangements and we complete and correct a previous result by Libgober and the third author concerning rank-two intersections in such arrangements.
Moduli Theory of the $r$-Braid Arrangement
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe a family of hyperplane arrangements depending on a positive integer parameter $r$, which we refer to as the $r$-braid arrangements, and which can be viewed as a generalization of the classical braid arrangement. The wonderful compactification of the braid arrangement (with respect to its minimal building set) is well-known to yield the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and, in this work, we generalize this result, constructing a moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}^r_{n}$ of certain genus-zero curves with an order-$r$ involution that we identify with the corresponding wonderful compactification of the $r$-braid arrangement. The resulting space is a variant of the previously studied moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^r_n$ [arXiv:2104.06526], related via a change of weights on the markings.

A decomposition of Grassmannian associated with a hyperplane arrangement
The Grassmannian, which is the manifold of all $k$-dimensional subspaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, was decomposed through three equivalent methods connecting combinatorial geometries, Schubert cells and convex polyhedra by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova. Recently, Liang, Wang and Zhao discovered a novel decomposition of the Grassmannian via an essential hyperplane arrangement, which generalizes the first two methods. However, their work was confined to essential hyperplane arrangements. Motivated by their research, we extend their results to a general hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, and demonstrate that the $\mathcal{A}$-matroid, the $\mathcal{A}$-adjoint and the refined $\mathcal{A}$-Schubert decompositions of the Grassmannian are consistent. As a byproduct, we provide a classification for $k$-restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ related to all $k$-subspaces through two equivalent methods: the $\mathcal{A}$-matroid decomposition and the $\mathcal{A}$-adjoint decomposition.

Preorders on maximal chains: hyperplane arrangements, Cambrian lattices, and maximal green sequences
We study preorders on (equivalence classes of) maximal chains in the general context of polygonal lattices endowed with suitably nice edge labellings. We show that, given a quotient of polygonal lattices, such edge labellings descend to the quotient, and that there is an induced order-preserving surjective map on the preordered sets of equivalence classes of maximal chains. Under a natural condition ensuring that the domain is a poset, the map is a contraction of preordered sets. We apply this to lattices of regions of simplicial hyperplane arrangements, where the preorders are partial orders, in particular to finite Coxeter arrangements. For the latter, each choice of Coxeter element gives us a different partial order on the set of equivalence classes of maximal chains; these generalise certain reoriented higher Bruhat orders in dimension two. The maps of posets of maximal chains induced by Cambrian congruences generalise the map of Kapranov and Voevodsky from the higher Bruhat orders to the higher Stasheff--Tamari orders in dimension two. While the fibres of this map are known not always to be intervals, our results show that they are always connected. We show that, in the case of Cambrian lattices, the induced maps on maximal chains have nice descriptions in terms of orientations of rank-two root subsystems, in a way which resembles taking the stable objects of a Rudakov stability condition. We finally consider the algebraic realisation of the weak order and Cambrian lattices via torsion-free classes of preprojective and path algebras, relating the posets of maximal chains to our earlier work on maximal green sequences.

Characteristic polynomials of semimatroids and their connections to matroids, hyperplane arrangements and graph colorings
We primarily investigate the properties of characteristic polynomials of semimatroids. In particular, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients, generalizing the Whitney's Broken Circuit Theorem. We also prove that the unsigned coefficients of the characteristic polynomial form a unimodal and log-concave sequence, extending the Rota-Heron-Welsh Conjecture to semimatroids. Furthermore, we present convolution identities for the multiplicative characteristic and Tutte polynomials of semimatroids using the Möbius conjugation. Finally, motivated by Kochol's work, we introduce assigning matroids to establish connections among semimatroids, hyperplane arrangements, and graph colorings, with a particular focus on their characteristic polynomials.

Interpreting the (signed) chromatic polynomial coefficients via hyperplane arrangements
A recent result of Lofano and Paolini expresses the characteristic polynomial of a real hyperplane arrangement in terms of a projection statistic on the regions of the arrangement. We use this result to give an alternative proof for Greene and Zaslavsky's interpretation for the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a graph and further generalize this interpretation to signed graphs. We also show that this projection statistic has a nice combinatorial interpretation in the case of the braid arrangement, which generalizes to graphical arrangements of natural unit interval graphs.
