Suppose G is a nilpotent, finite group. We show that if {a,b} is any 2-element generating set of G, then the corresponding Cayley digraph Cay(G;a,b) has a hamiltonian path. This implies there is a hamiltonian path in every connected Cayley graph on G that has valence at most 4.

Let B be a real hyperplane arrangement which is stable under the action of a Coxeter group W. Then B acts naturally on the set of chambers of B. We assume that B is disjoint from the Coxeter arrangement A=A(W) of W. In this paper, we show that the W-orbits of the set of chambers of B are in one-to-one correspondence with the chambers of C=A\cup B which are contained in an arbitrarily fixed chamber of A. From this fact, we find that the number of W-orbits of the set of chambers of B is given by the number of chambers of C divided by the order of W. We will also study the set of chambers of C which are contained in a chamber b of B. We prove that the cardinality of this set is equal to the order of the isotropy subgroup W_b of b. We illustrate these results with some examples, and solve an open problem in Kamiya, Takemura and Terao [Ranking patterns of unfolding models of codimension one, Adv. in Appl. Math. (2010)] by using our results.

We use Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of representations of the symmetric group to express Pfaffians with entries $(a_i-a_j) h_{i+j}$. In the case where the parameters $a_i$ are specialized to successive powers of $q$, and the $h_i$ are complete functions, we obtain the $q$-discriminant.

We study the distribution of the major index with sign on some parabolic quotients of the symmetric group, extending and generalizing simultaneously results Gessel-Simion and Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and on some special trees that we call rakes. We further consider and compute the distribution of the flag-major index on some parabolic quotients of wreath products and other related groups. All these distributions turn out to have very simple factorization formulas.
Some other algebraic properties of folded hypercubes
We construct explicity the automorphism group of the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ of dimension $n>3$, as a semidirect product of $N$ by $M$, where $N$ is isomorphic to the Abelian group $Z_2^n$, and $M$ is isomorphic to $Sym(n+1)$, the symmetric group of degree $n+1$, then we will show that the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ is a symmetric graph.

We show that a classical uniformly distributed phenomenon for an element and its inverse in ($\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^{*}$ also exists in $\textrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$. A $\textrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ analogy of the uniform distribution on modular hyperbolas has also been considered.
Languages invariant under more symmetries: overlapping factors versus palindromic richness

Factor complexity $\mathcal{C}$ and palindromic complexity $\mathcal{P}$ of infinite words with language closed under reversal are known to be related by the inequality $\mathcal{P}(n) + \mathcal{P}(n+1) \leq 2 + \mathcal{C}(n+1)-\mathcal{C}(n)$ for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$\,. Word for which the equality is attained for any $n$ is usually called rich in palindromes. In this article we study words whose languages are invariant under a finite group $G$ of symmetries. For such words we prove a stronger version of the above inequality. We introduce notion of $G$-palindromic richness and give several examples of $G$-rich words, including the Thue-Morse sequence as well.
On Primitive Words I: A New Algorithm
Let $F_k$ be the free group on $k$ generators, and let $H\le J\le \F_k$ be subgroups of finite rank. We present a new elementary algorithm to determine whether $H$ is a free factor of $J$. In particular, this algorithm can determine whether a given element $w\in F_k$ is primitive, i.e. whether it belongs to some basis of $F_k$.
Electrical networks and Lie theory

We introduce a new class of "electrical" Lie groups. These Lie groups, or more precisely their nonnegative parts, act on the space of planar electrical networks via combinatorial operations previously studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow. The corresponding electrical Lie algebras are obtained by deforming the Serre relations of a semisimple Lie algebra in a way suggested by the star-triangle transformation of electrical networks. Rather surprisingly, we show that the type A electrical Lie group is isomorphic to the symplectic group. The nonnegative part (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0} of the electrical Lie group is a rather precise analogue of the totally nonnegative subsemigroup (U_{n})_{\geq 0} of the unipotent subgroup of SL_{n}. We establish decomposition and parametrization results for (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0}, paralleling Lusztig's work in total nonnegativity, and work of Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and de Verdière-Gitler-Vertigan for networks. Finally, we suggest a generalization of electrical Lie algebras to all Dynkin types.
Diameters of random circulant graphs

The diameter of a graph measures the maximal distance between any pair of vertices. The diameters of many small-world networks, as well as a variety of other random graph models, grow logarithmically in the number of nodes. In contrast, the worst connected networks are cycles whose diameters increase linearly in the number of nodes. In the present study we consider an intermediate class of examples: Cayley graphs of cyclic groups, also known as circulant graphs or multi-loop networks. We show that the diameter of a random circulant 2k-regular graph with n vertices scales as n^{1/k}, and establish a limit theorem for the distribution of their diameters. We obtain analogous results for the distribution of the average distance and higher moments.
Random sum-free subsets of Abelian groups

We characterize the structure of maximum-size sum-free subsets of a random subset of an Abelian group $G$. In particular, we determine the threshold $p_c \approx \sqrt{\log n / n}$ above which, with high probability as $|G| \to \infty$, each such subset is contained in a maximum-size sum-free subset of $G$, whenever $q$ divides $|G|$ for some (fixed) prime $q$ with $q \equiv 2 \pmod 3$. Moreover, in the special case $G = \ZZ_{2n}$, we determine a sharp threshold for the above property. The proof uses recent 'transference' theorems of Conlon and Gowers, together with stability theorems for sum-free subsets of Abelian groups.

For positive integers p and q with 1/p + 1/q < 1/2, a tessellation of type {p,q} is a tessellation of the hyperbolic plane by regular p-gons with q p-gons meeting at each vertex. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition on the integers p and q is established to determine when a tessellation of type {p,q} can be realized as a tessellation of the hyperbolic plane by fundamental domains of some Fuchsian group. Specifically, a tessellation of type {p,q} is a tessellation by fundamental domains if and only if q has a prime divisor less than or equal to p.
The Shard Intersection Order on Permutations
The shard intersection order is a new lattice structure on a finite Coxeter group W which encodes the geometry of the reflection arrangement and the lattice theory of the weak order. In the case where W is the symmetric group, we characterize shard intersections as certain pre-orders which we call permutation pre-orders. We use this combinatorial characterization to determine properties of the shard intersection order. In particular, we give an EL-labeling.
Crystal frameworks, symmetry and affinely periodic flexes
Symmetry equations are obtained for the rigidity matrices associated with various forms of infinitesimal flexibility for an idealised bond-node crystal framework $\C$ in $\bR^d$. These equations are used to derive symmetry-adapted Maxwell-Calladine counting formulae for periodic self-stresses and affinely periodic infinitesimal mechanisms. The symmetry equations also lead to general Fowler-Guest formulae connecting the character lists of subrepresentations of the crystallographic space and point groups which are associated with bonds, nodes, stresses, flexes and rigid motions. A new derivation is also given for the Borcea-Streinu rigidity matrix and the correspondence between its nullspace and the space of affinely periodic infinitesimal flexes.

We introduce a probability distribution Q on the group of permutations of the set Z of integers. Distribution Q is a natural extension of the Mallows distribution on the finite symmetric group. A one-sided infinite counterpart of Q, supported by the group of permutations of the set N of natural numbers, was studied previously in our paper [Gnedin and Olshanski, Ann. Prob. 38 (2010), 2103-2135; arXiv:0907.3275]. We analyze various features of Q such as its symmetries, the support, and the marginal distributions.

This paper develops a harmonic Galois theory for finite graphs, thereby classifying harmonic branched $G$-covers of a fixed base $X$ in terms of homomorphisms from a suitable fundamental group of $X$ together with $G$-inertia structures on $X$. As applications, we show that finite embedding problems for graphs have proper solutions and prove a Grunwald-Wang type result stating that an arbitrary collection of fibers may be realized by a global cover.

On the Ramified Optimal Allocation Problem

This paper proposes an optimal allocation problem with ramified transport technology in a spatial economy. Ramified transportation is used to model the transport economy of scale in group transportation observed widely in both nature and efficiently designed transport systems of branching structures. The ramified allocation problem aims at finding an optimal allocation plan as well as an associated optimal allocation path to minimize overall cost of transporting commodity from factories to households. This problem differentiates itself from existing ramified transportation literature in that the distribution of production among factories is not fixed but endogenously determined as observed in many allocation practices. It's shown that due to the transport economy of scale in ramified transportation, each optimal allocation plan corresponds equivalently to an optimal assignment map from households to factories. This optimal assignment map provides a natural partition of both households and allocation paths. We develop methods of marginal transportation analysis and projectional analysis to study properties of optimal assignment maps. These properties are then related to the search for an optimal assignment map in the context of state matrix.
Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations".
Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions.
Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

This paper focuses on determining the volumes of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic groups, dihedral groups, groups of automorphisms of tree graphs, and Frobenius groups. We do this through the use of triangulations and the calculation of Ehrhart polynomials. We also present results on the theta body hierarchy of various permutation polytopes.
