Dessins, their delta-matroids and partial duals
Given a map $\mathcal M$ on a connected and closed orientable surface, the delta-matroid of $\mathcal M$ is a combinatorial object associated to $\mathcal M$ which captures some topological information of the embedding. We explore how delta-matroids associated to dessins d'enfants behave under the action of the absolute Galois group. Twists of delta-matroids are considered as well; they correspond to the recently introduced operation of partial duality of maps. Furthermore, we prove that every map has a partial dual defined over its field of moduli. A relationship between dessins, partial duals and tropical curves arising from the cartography groups of dessins is observed as well.
Fixed-energy harmonic functions

We study the map from conductances to edge energies for harmonic functions on finite graphs with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that for any compatible acyclic orientation and choice of energies there is a unique choice of conductances such that the associated harmonic function realizes those orientations and energies. We call the associated function enharmonic. For rational energies and boundary data the Galois group of ${\mathbb Q}^{tr}$ (the totally real algebraic numbers) over ${\mathbb Q}$ permutes the enharmonic functions, acting on the set of compatible acyclic orientations. A consequence is the non-tileability of certain polygons by rational-area rectangles.
For planar graphs there is an enharmonic conjugate function, together these form the real and imaginary parts of a "fixed energy" analytic function. In the planar scaling limit for ${\mathbb Z}^2$ (and the fixed south/west orientation), these functions satisfy a nonlinear analog of the Cauchy-Riemann equations, namely \begin{eqnarray*}u_xv_y &=& 1\\u_yv_x&=&-1.\end{eqnarray*} We give an analog of the Riemann mapping theorem for these functions, as well as a variational approach to finding solutions in both the discrete and continuous settings.
On non-conjugate Coxeter elements in well-generated reflection groups

Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer's regular elements of arbitrary order.

We investigate double transitivity of Galois groups in the classical Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. We show that all Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2- and 3-planes have doubly transitive Galois groups, as do all Schubert problems involving only special Schubert conditions. We use these results to give a new proof that Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2-planes have Galois groups that contain the alternating group. We also investigate the Galois group of every Schubert problem on Gr(4,8), finding that each Galois group either contains the alternating group or is an imprimitive permutation group and therefore fails to be doubly transitive. These imprimitive examples show that our results are the best possible general results on double transitivity of Schubert problems.
Galois groups of Schubert problems of lines are at least alternating

We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. This constitutes the largest family of enumerative problems whose Galois groups have been largely determined. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, our result follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, a combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use the Weyl integral formula to obtain an integral formula for these Kostka numbers. This rewrites the inequality as an integral, which we estimate to establish the inequality.

We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, this follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, an easy combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use that these Kostka numbers appear in tensor product decompositions of sl_2(C)-modules. Interpreting the tensor product as the action of certain commuting Toeplitz matrices and using a spectral analysis and Fourier series rewrites the inequality as the positivity of an integral. We establish the inequality by estimating this integral.

Let $K$ be a field whose absolute Galois group is finitely generated. If $K$ neither finite nor of characteristic 2, then every hyperelliptic curve over $K$ with all of its Weierstrass points defined over $K$ has infinitely many $K$-points. If, in addition, $K$ is not locally finite, then every elliptic curve over $K$ with all of its 2-torsion rational has infinite rank over $K$. These and similar results are deduced from the Hales-Jewett theorem.
Balanced $0,1$-words and the Galois group of $(x+1)^n-λx^p$
We study the number of $0,1$-words where the fraction of 0 is "almost" fixed for any initial subword. It turns out that this study use and reveal the structure of the Galois group (the monodromy group) of the polynomials $(x+1)^n-λx^p$. ($p$ is not necessary a prime here.)

The multivariate Tutte polynomial $\hat Z_M$ of a matroid $M$ is a generalization of the standard two-variable version, obtained by assigning a separate variable $v_e$ to each element $e$ of the ground set $E$. It encodes the full structure of $M$. Let $\bv = \{v_e\}_{e\in E}$, let $K$ be an arbitrary field, and suppose $M$ is connected. We show that $\hat Z_M$ is irreducible over $K(\bv)$, and give three self-contained proofs that the Galois group of $\hat Z_M$ over $K(\bv)$ is the symmetric group of degree $n$, where $n$ is the rank of $M$. An immediate consequence of this result is that the Galois group of the multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid is a direct product of symmetric groups. Finally, we conjecture a similar result for the standard Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid.

A generalised Paley map is a Cayley map for the additive group of a finite field F, with a subgroup S=-S of the multiplicative group as generating set, cyclically ordered by powers of a generator of S. We characterise these as the orientably regular maps with orientation-preserving automorphism group acting primitively and faithfully on the vertices; allowing a non-faithful primitive action yields certain cyclic coverings of these maps. We determine the fields of definition and the orbits of the absolute Galois group on these maps, and we show that if (q-1)/(p-1) divides |S|, where |F|=q=p^e with p prime, then these maps are the only orientably regular embeddings of their underlying graphs; in particular this applies to the Paley graphs, where |S|=(q-1)/2 is even.

We show that for each d>0 the d-dimensional Hamming graph H(d,q) has an orientably regular surface embedding if and only if q is a prime power p^e. If q>2 there are up to isomorphism φ(q-1)/e such maps, all constructed as Cayley maps for a d-dimensional vector space over the field of order q. We show that for each such pair d, q the corresponding Belyi pairs are conjugate under the action of the absolute Galois group, and we determine their minimal field of definition. We also classify the orientably regular embedding of merged Hamming graphs for q>3.
Distance Configurations of Points in a Plane with a Galois group that is not Soluble
We have conjectured that the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals when the graph is 3-connected. We prove that this conjecture follows from the following simpler conjecture: the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals if the graph does not contain a proper subgraph which is itself a Laman graph.
