Chern Classes of Toric Variety Bundles
In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Khovanskii--Monin on the Chern classes of toric variety bundles. The main result is a formula for the total Chern class of the tangent bundle of a toric variety bundle in terms of the total Chern class of the base and the total Chern class of the toric fibre. The result serves as a simultaneous generalization of the description of the total Chern class of a projectivized vector bundle and of the formula for the total Chern class of a toric variety in terms of the Chern classes of the toric divisors. We also establish a topological version of this statement for stably complex quasitoric manifolds. As an immediate application, we obtain a formula for the total Chern class of a toroidal horospherical variety in terms of the Chern classes of the generalized flag variety and the total Chern class of the toric fibre, as well as a new proof of Masuda's formula for equivariant Chern classes. This paper is written with a view towards finding polytopal models for various numeric invariants of spherical varieties.

Upper cluster structure on Kac--Moody Richardson varieties
We show coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. We further show the coordinate rings of (generalized) open Richardson varieties on the twisted product of flag varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. This includes, as special cases, reduced double Bruhat cells, Bott-Samelson varieties, braid varieties. Our results generalize various results by Casals--Gorsky--Gorsky--Le--Shen--Simental and Galashin--Lam--Sherman-Bennett--Speyer in finite types.

Changing Bases with Pipe Dream Combinatorics
Lascoux and Schützenberger introduced Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials to study the cohomology and K-theory of the complete flag variety. We present explicit combinatorial rules for expressing Grothendieck polynomials in the basis of Schubert polynomials, and vice versa, using the bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. A key advantage of BPDs is that they are naturally back stable, which allows us to give a combinatorial formula for expanding back stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of back stable Schubert polynomials. We also provide pipe dream interpretations for the rules originally given by Lenart (Grothendieck to Schubert) and Lascoux (Schubert to Grothendieck), which were previously formulated in terms of binary triangular arrays. We give new proofs of these results, relying on Knutson's co-transition recurrences. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for expanding Grothendieck polynomials into Schubert polynomials using chains in Bruhat order. The key connection between the pipe dream and BPD change of basis formulas is the canonical bijection of Gao and Huang. We show that co-permutations are preserved by this map.
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.
Relativistic Toda lattice and equivariant $K$-homology of affine Grassmannian

We investigate the phenomenon known as ``quantum equals affine'' in the setting of $T$-equivariant quantum $K$-theory of the flag variety $G/B$, as established by Kato for any semisimple algebraic group $G$. In particular, we focus on the $K$-Peterson isomorphism between the $T$-equivariant quantum $K$-ring $QK_T(SL_n(\mathbb{C})/B)$ and the $T$-equivariant $K$-homology ring $K_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_{SL_n})$ of the affine Grassmannian, after suitable localizations on both sides. Building on an earlier work by Ikeda, Iwao, and Maeno, we present an explicit algebraic realization of the $K$-Peterson map via a rational substitution that sends the generators of the quantum $K$-theory ring to explicit rational expressions in the fundamental generators of $K_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_{SL_n})$, thereby matching the Schubert bases on both sides. Our approach builds on recent developments in the theory of $QK_T(SL_n(\mathbb{C})/B)$ by Maeno, Naito, and Sagaki, as well as the theory of $K$-theoretic double $k$-Schur functions introduced by Ikeda, Shimozono, and Yamaguchi. This concrete formulation provides new insight into the combinatorial structure of the $K$-Peterson isomorphism in the equivariant setting. As an application, we establish a factorization formula for the $K$-theoretic double $k$-Schur function associated with the maximal $k$-irreducible $k$-bounded partition.
Equivariant quasisymmetry and noncrossing partitions
We introduce a definition of ``equivariant quasisymmetry'' for polynomials in two sets of variables. Using this definition we define quasisymmetric generalizations of the theory of double Schur and double Schubert polynomials that we call double fundamental polynomials and double forest polynomials, where the subset of ``noncrossing partitions'' plays the role of $S_n$. In subsequent work we will show this combinatorics is governed by a new geometric construction we call the ``quasisymmetric flag variety'' which plays the same role for equivariant quasisymmetry as the usual flag variety plays in the classical story.
Toda-Type Presentations for the Quantum K Theory of Partial Flag Varieties
Published in SIGMA 21 (2025), 098, 26 pages • View Publication • BIB
We prove a determinantal, Toda-type, presentation for the equivariant K theory of a partial flag variety ${\rm Fl}(r_1, \dots, r_k;n)$. The proof relies on pushing forward the Toda presentation obtained by Maeno, Naito and Sagaki for the complete flag variety ${\rm Fl}(n)$, via Kato's ${\rm K}_T({\rm pt})$-algebra homomorphism from the quantum K ring of ${\rm Fl}(n)$ to that of ${\rm Fl}(r_1, \dots, r_k;n)$. Starting instead from the Whitney presentation for ${\rm Fl}(n)$, we show that the same pushforward technique gives a recursive formula for polynomial representatives of quantum K Schubert classes in any partial flag variety which do not depend on quantum parameters. In an appendix, we include another proof of the Toda presentation for the equivariant quantum K ring of ${\rm Fl}(n)$, following Anderson, Chen, and Tseng, which is based on the fact that the ${\rm K}$-theoretic $J$-function is an eigenfunction of the finite difference Toda Hamiltonians.
Shellability of the quotient order on lattice path matroids
The concept of a matroid quotient has connections to fundamental questions in the geometry of flag varieties. In previous work, Benedetti and Knauer characterized quotients in the class of lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of a simple combinatorial condition. As a consequence, they showed that the quotient order on LPMs yields a graded poset whose rank polynomial relates to a refinement of the Catalan numbers. In this work we show that this poset admits an EL-labeling, implying that the order complex is shellable and hence enjoys several combinatorial and topological properties. We use this to establish bounds on the Möbius function of the poset, interpreting falling chains in the EL-labeling in terms of properties of underlying permutations. Furthermore, we show that this EL-labeling is in fact a Whitney labeling, in the sense of the recent notion introduced by González D'León and Hallam.

Brewing Fubini-Bruhat Orders
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire Issue 91B Article [91B.45], 2024 • Search Publication
The Bruhat order on permutations arises out of the study of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians and flag varieties, which have been important for over 100 years. The purpose of this paper is to study variations on this theme related to subvarieties of the spanning line configurations $X_{n,k}$ as defined by Pawlowski and Rhoades. These subvarieties are indexed by Fubini words, or equivalently by ordered set partitions. Three natural partial orders arise in this context; we refer to them as the decaf, medium roast, and espresso orders. The decaf order is a generalization of the weak order on permutations defined by covering relations using simple transpositions. The medium roast order is a generalization of the (strong) Bruhat order defined by the closure relationship on the subvarieties. The espresso order is the transitive closure of a relation based on intersecting subvarieties. Many properties of Schubert varieties and Bruhat order extend to one or more of the three Fubini-Bruhat orders. We examine some of the many possibilities in this work.
Splicing skew shaped positroids
Skew shaped positroids (or skew shaped positroid varieties) are certain Richardson varieties in the flag variety that admit a realization as explicit subvarieties of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$. They are parametrized by a pair of Young diagrams $μ\subseteq λ$ fitting inside a $k \times (n-k)$-rectangle. For every $a = 1, \dots, n-k$, we define an explicit open set $U_a$ inside the skew shaped positroid $S^{\circ}_{λ/μ}$, and show that $U_a$ is isomorphic to the product of two smaller skew shaped positroids. Moreover, $U_a$ admits a natural cluster structure and the aforementioned isomorphism is quasi-cluster in the sense of Fraser. Our methods depend on realizing the skew shaped positroid as an explicit braid variety, and generalize the work of the first and third authors for open positroid cells in the Grassmannian.
Cell closures for two-row Springer fibers via noncrossing matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Springer fibers are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by nilpotent matrices that are important in geometric representation theory and whose geometry encodes deep combinatorics. Two-row Springer fibers, which correspond to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks, also arise in knot theory, in part because their components are indexed by noncrossing matchings. Springer fibers are paved by affines by intersection with appropriately-chosen Schubert cells. In the two-row case, we provide an elementary description of these Springer Schubert cells in terms of standard noncrossing matchings and describe closure relations explicitly. To do this, we define an operation called cutting arcs in a matching, which successively unnests arcs while ``remembering" the arc originally on top. We then prove that the boundary of the Springer Schubert cell corresponding to a matching consists of the affine subsets of cells corresponding to all ways of cutting arcs in that matching.

Algebra and geometry of ASM weak order
Much of modern Schubert calculus is centered on Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety and on their classes in its integral cohomology ring. Under the Borel isomorphism, these classes are represented by distinguished polynomials called Schubert polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger. Knutson and Miller showed that Schubert polynomials are multidegrees of matrix Schubert varieties, affine varieties introduced by Fulton, which are closely related to Schubert varieties. Many roads to studying Schubert polynomials pass through unions and intersections of matrix Schubert varieties. The third author showed that the natural indexing objects of arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties are alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Every ASM variety is expressible as a union of matrix Schubert varieties. Many fundamental algebro-geometric invariants (e.g., codimension, degree, and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity) are well understood combinatorially for matrix Schubert varieties, substantially via the combinatorics of strong Bruhat order on $S_n$. The extension of strong order to ASM(n), the set of $n \times n$ ASMs, has so far not borne as much algebro-geometric fruit for ASM varieties. Hamaker and Reiner proposed an extension of weak Bruhat order from $S_n$ to ASM(n), which they studied from a combinatorial perspective. In the present paper, we place this work on algebro-geometric footing. We use weak order on ASMs to give a characterization of codimension of ASM varieties. We also show that weak order operators commute with K-theoretic divided difference operators and that they satisfy the same derivative formula that facilitated the first general combinatorial computation of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties. Finally, we build from these results to generalizations that apply to arbitrary unions of matrix Schubert varieties.
Littlewood--Richardson rules from quivers for two-step flag varieties
Let $\bigwedge_1$ and $\bigwedge_2$ be two symmetric function algebras in independent sets of variables. We define vector space bases of $\bigwedge_1 \otimes_\mathbb{Z} \bigwedge_2$ coming from certain quivers, with vertex sets indexed by pairs of partitions. We use these vector space bases to give a positive tableau formula for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for the product of Schubert polynomials with certain Schur polynomials in two-step flag varieties, in the spirit of the Remmel-Whitney rule for the product of two Schur polynomials in Grassmannians. This in particular covers the cases considered by the Pieri rule.

Orbits on a product of two flags and a line and the Bruhat Order, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=GL(n)$ be the $n\times n$ complex general linear group and let $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ be its flag variety. The standard Borel subgroup $B$ of upper triangular matrices acts on the product $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ with finitely many orbits. In this paper, we study the $B$-orbits on the subvarieties $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathcal{O}_{i}$, where $\mathcal{O}_{i}$ is the $B$-orbit on $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ containing the line through the origin in the direction of the $i$-th standard basis vector of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. For each $i=1,\dots, n$, we construct a bijection between $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{O}_{i}$ and certain pairs of Schubert cells in $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{B}_{n}$. We also show that this bijection can be used to understand the Richardson-Springer monoid action on such $B$-orbits in terms of the classical monoid action of the symmetric group on itself. We also develop combinatorial models of these orbits and use these models to compute exponential generating functions for the sequences $\{|B\backslash(\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathcal{O}_{i})|\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\{|B\backslash (\mathcal{B}_{n}\times \mathbb{P}^{n-1})|\}_{n\geq 1}$. In the sequel to this paper, we use the results of this paper to construct a correspondence between $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ and a collection of $B$-orbits on the flag variety $\mathcal{B}_{n+1}$ of $GL(n+1)$ and show that this correspondence respects closures relations and preserves monoid actions. As a consequence both closure relations and monoid actions for all $B$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}\times\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ can be understood via the Bruhat order by using our results in [CE].

Quantum integrable model for the quantum cohomology/K-theory of flag varieties and the double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials
A GL$(n)$ quantum integrable system generalizing the asymmetric five vertex spin chain is shown to encode the ring relations of the equivariant quantum cohomology and equivariant quantum K-theory ring of flag varieties. We also show that the Bethe ansatz states of this system generate the double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 19, October 2025, rnaf305 • View Publication • BIB
The open projected Richardson varieties form a stratification for the partial flag variety $G/P$. We compare the Segre--MacPherson classes of open projected Richardson varieties with those of the corresponding affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. In the case of the Grassmannian $G/P=\operatorname{Gr}_k(\mathbb{C}^n)$, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as open positroid varieties. We obtain symmetric functions that represent the Segre--MacPherson classes of these open positroid varieties, constructed explicitly in terms of pipe dreams for affine permutations.

Tableau formula for vexillary double Edelman--Greene coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lam, Lee and Shimozono recently introduced backstable double Grothendieck polynomials to represent $K$-theory classes of the infinite flag variety. They used them to define double $β$-Stanley symmetric functions, which expand into double stable Grothendieck functions with polynomial coefficients called double $β$-Edelman--Greene coefficients. Anderson proved these coefficients are $β$-Graham positive. For vexillary permutations, this is equivalent to a statement for skew flagged double $β$-Grothendieck functions. Working in this setting, we give a tableau formula for vexillary double $β$-Edelman--Greene coefficients that is manifestly $β$-Graham positive. Our formula demonstrates a finer notion of positivity than was previously known.

On some Grothendieck expansions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The complete flag variety admits a natural action by both the orthogonal group and the symplectic group. Wyser and Yong defined orthogonal Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and symplectic Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as the $K$-theory classes of the corresponding orbit closures. There is an explicit formula to expand $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as a nonnegative sum of Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_w$, which represent the $K$-theory classes of Schubert varieties. Although the constructions of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ and $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ are similar, finding the $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ or even computing $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ is much harder. If $z$ is vexillary then $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ has a nonnegative $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion, but the associated coefficients are mostly unknown. This paper derives several new formulas for $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and its $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion when $z$ is vexillary. Among other applications, we prove that the latter expansion has a nontrivial stability property.

A conjecture on descents, inversions and the weak order
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we discuss the notion of partition of elements in an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$: a partition of an element $w$ is a subset $\mathcal P\subseteq W$ such that the left inversion set of $w$ is the disjoint union of the left inversion set of the elements in $\mathcal P$. Partitions of elements of $W$ arises in the study of the Belkale-Kumar product on the cohomology $H^*(X,\mathbb Z)$, where $X$ is the complete flag variety of any complex semi-simple algebraic group. Partitions of elements in the symmetric group $\mathcal S_n$ are also related to the {\em Babington-Smith model} in algebraic statistics or to the simplicial faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone. We state the conjecture that the number of right descents of $w$ is the sum of the number of right descents of the elements of $\mathcal P$ and prove that this conjecture holds in the cases of symmetric groups (type $A$) and hyperoctahedral groups (type $B$).

On the Classification of Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
We generalize the classification of isomorphism classes of Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties G/B to a class of partial flag varieties G/P. In particular, we classify all Schubert varieties in G/P where P is a minimal parabolic subgroup and all Schubert surfaces. We also obtain several pairs of isomorphisms of Schubert varieties from folding the root system. This allows us to find an upper bound of the cardinality of isomorphism classes of Schubert three-folds.
