Krull dimension and regularity of binomial edge ideals of block graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of block graphs by computing the two distinguished extremal Betti numbers of a new family of block graphs, called flower graphs. Moreover, we present a linear time algorithm to compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Krull dimension of binomial edge ideals of block graphs.

Regularity and Gröbner bases of the Rees algebra of edge ideals of bipartite graphs
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. The aim of this note is to investigate different aspects of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. We compute its regularity and the universal Gröbner basis of its defining equations; interestingly, both of them are described in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We apply these ideas to study the regularity of the powers of $I$. For any $s \ge \text{match}(G)+\lvert E(G) \rvert +1$ we prove that $\text{reg}(I^{s+1})=\text{reg}(I^s)+2$.

Regularity of Edge Ideals and Their Powers
We survey recent studies on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of edge ideals of graphs and their powers. Our focus is on bounds and exact values of $\text{reg} I(G)$ and the asymptotic linear function $\text{reg} I(G)^q$, for $q \geq 1,$ in terms of combinatorial data of the given graph $G.$
Footprint and minimum distance functions
Published in Commun. Korean Math. Soc. 33 (2018), No. 1, pp. 85--101 • Search Publication
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$, with a monomial order $\prec$, and let $I$ be an unmixed graded ideal of $S$. In this paper we study two functions associated to $I$: the minimum distance function $δ_I$ and the footprint function ${\rm fp}_I$. It is shown that $δ_I$ is positive and that ${\rm fp}_I$ is positive if the initial ideal of $I$ is unmixed. Then we show that if $I$ is radical and its associated primes are generated by linear forms, then $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing until it reaches the asymptotic value $1$. If $I$ is the edge ideal of a Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graph, we show that $δ_I(d)=1$ for $d$ greater than or equal to the regularity of $S/I$. For a graded ideal of dimension $\geq 1$, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give an exact sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function.

Powers of Ideals Associated to $(C_4, 2K_2)$-free Graphs
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 223 (2019), no. 7, 3071-3080 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a $(C_4, 2K_2)$-free graph with edge ideal $I(G)\subset \Bbbk[x_1,\dots , x_n]$. We show that $I(G)^s$ has linear resolution for every $s\geq 2$. Also, we show that every power of the vertex cover ideal of $G$ has linear quotients. As a result, we describe the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of $I(G)^{\vee}$ in terms of the maximum degree of $G$.

Comparing Powers of Edge Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a nontrivial homogeneous ideal $I\subseteq k[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_d]$, a problem of great recent interest has been the comparison of the $r$th ordinary power of $I$ and the $m$th symbolic power $I^{(m)}$. This comparison has been undertaken directly via an exploration of which exponents $m$ and $r$ guarantee the subset containment $I^{(m)}\subseteq I^r$ and asymptotically via a computation of the resurgence $ρ(I)$, a number for which any $m/r > ρ(I)$ guarantees $I^{(m)}\subseteq I^r$. Recently, a third quantity, the symbolic defect, was introduced; as $I^t\subseteq I^{(t)}$, the symbolic defect is the minimal number of generators required to add to $I^t$ in order to get $I^{(t)}$. We consider these various means of comparison when $I$ is the edge ideal of certain graphs by describing an ideal $J$ for which $I^{(t)} = I^t + J$. When $I$ is the edge ideal of an odd cycle, our description of the structure of $I^{(t)}$ yields solutions to both the direct and asymptotic containment questions, as well as a partial computation of the sequence of symbolic defects.

On $m$-Closed Graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 21, Issue 4 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
A graph is closed when its vertices have a labeling by $[n]$ such that the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to the lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > \cdots > x_n > y_1> \cdots > y_n$. In this paper, we generalize this notion and study the so called $m-$closed graphs. We find equivalent condition to $3-$closed property of an arbitrary tree $T$. Using it, we classify a class of $3-$closed trees. The primary decomposition of this class of graphs is also studied.

On the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal of closed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the equality of the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ and those of its initial ideal ${\rm in}(J_G)$ of a closed graph $G$. We prove that in some cases there is an unique extremal Betti number for ${\rm in}(J_G)$ and as a consequence there is an unique extremal Betti number for $J_G$ and these extremal Betti numbers are equal
Regularity of Powers of edge ideal of very well-covered graphs
Let $k\geq 3$ be an integer and $G$ be a very well-covered graph with ${\rm odd-girth}(G)\geq 2k+1$. Assume that $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$. We show that for every integer $s$ with $1\leq s\leq k-2$, we have ${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)=2s+ν(G)-1$, where $ν(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$.
Depth and regularity modulo a principal ideal
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.

Binomial edge ideals of regularity $3$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals, as well as their initial ideals, have regularity $3$. Consequently we characterize all graphs $G$ such that $J_G$ is extremal Gorenstein. Indeed, these characterizations are consequences of an explicit formula we obtain for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join product of two graphs. Finally, by using our regularity formula, we discuss some open problems in the literature. In particular we disprove a conjecture in \cite{CDI} on the regularity of weakly closed graphs.
Symbolic powers of monomial ideals and Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted digraphs
Published in in Singularities, Algebraic Geometry, Commutative Algebra, and Related Topics (G. M. Greuel, et.al. Eds), Springer, Cham, 2018, pp. 491--510 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds. It is shown that edge ideals of weighted acyclic tournaments are Cohen--Macaulay and satisfy Alexander duality

On the regularity of edge ideal of graphs
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$ and $I(G)$ denote the edge ideal of $G$. For every collection $\mathcal{H}$ of connected graphs with $K_2\in \mathcal{H}$, we introduce the notions of $\ind-match_{\mathcal{H}}(G)$ and $\min-match_{\mathcal{H}}(G)$. It will be proved that the inequalities $\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)\leq{\rm reg}(S/I(G))\leq\min-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ are true. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a Cohen--Macaulay graph with girth at least five, then ${\rm reg}(S/I(G))=\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$. Furthermore, we prove that if $G$ is a paw--free and doubly Cohen--Macaulay graph, then ${\rm reg}(S/I(G))=\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ if and only if every connected component of $G$ is either a complete graph or a $5$-cycle graph. Among other results, we show that for every doubly Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complex, the equality ${\rm reg}(\mathbb{K}[Δ])={\rm dim}(\mathbb{K}[Δ])$ holds.

Binomial edge ideals of bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify the bipartite graphs $G$ whose binomial edge ideal $J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. The connected components of such graphs can be obtained by gluing a finite number of basic blocks with two operations. In this context we prove the converse of a well-known result due to Hartshorne, showing that the Cohen-Macaulayness of these ideals is equivalent to the connectedness of their dual graphs. We study interesting properties also for non-bipartite graphs and in the unmixed case, constructing classes of bipartite graphs with $J_G$ unmixed and not Cohen-Macaulay.

Koszul binomial edge ideals of pairs of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Koszul property of a standard graded $K$-algebra $R$ defined by the binomial edge ideal of a pair of graphs $(G_1,G_2)$. We show that the following statements are equivalent: (i) $R$ is Koszul; (ii) the defining ideal $J_{G_1,G_2}$ of $R$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis; (iii) the graded maximal ideal of $R$ has linear quotients with respect to a suitable order of its generators

Some algebraic invariants of edge ideal of circulant graphs
Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$ and let $I(G)$ be its edge ideal in the ring $K[x_0,\ldots,x_{n-1}]$. Under the hypothesis that $n$ is prime we : 1) compute the regularity index of $R/I(G)$; 2) compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity when $R/I(G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay; 3) prove that the circulant graphs with $S=\{1,\ldots,s\}$ are sequentially $S_2$ . We end characterizing the Cohen-Macaulay circulant graphs of Krull dimension $2$ and computing their Cohen-Macaulay type and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.

On the binomial edge ideals of proper interval graphs
We prove several cases of the Betti number conjecture for the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ of a proper interval graph $G$ (also known as closed graph). Namely, we show that this conjecture is true for the linear strand of $J_G$, and true in general for any proper interval graph $G$ such that the regularity of $S/J_G$ equals two.

Generalized multiplicities of edge ideals
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, May (2018), Volume 47, Issue 3, pp. 441--472 • View Publication • BIB
We explore connections between the generalized multiplicities of square-free monomial ideals and the combinatorial structure of the underlying hypergraphs using methods of commutative algebra and polyhedral geometry. For instance, we show the $j$-multiplicity is multiplicative over the connected components of a hypergraph, and we explicitly relate the $j$-multiplicity of the edge ideal of a properly connected uniform hypergraph to the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of its special fiber ring. In addition, we provide general bounds for the generalized multiplicities of the edge ideals and compute these invariants for classes of uniform hypergraphs.
