The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets.
As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling.
Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.
Improving the Florentine algorithms: recovering algorithms for Motzkin and Schröder paths
We present random sampling procedures for Motzkin and Schröder paths, following previous work on Dyck paths. Our algorithms follow the anticipated rejection method of the Florentine algorithms (Barcucci et al. 1994+), but introduce a recovery idea to greatly reduce the probability of rejection. They use an optimal amount of randomness and achieve a better time complexity than the Florentine algorithms.

The Tamari lattice, defined on Catalan objects such as binary trees and Dyck paths, is a well-studied poset in combinatorics. It is thus natural to try to extend it to other families of lattice paths. In this article, we fathom such a possibility by defining and studying an analogy of the Tamari lattice on Motzkin paths. While our generalization is not a lattice, each of its connected components is isomorphic to an interval in the classical Tamari lattice. With this structural result, we proceed to the enumeration of components and intervals in the poset of Motzkin paths we defined. We also extend the structural and enumerative results to Schröder paths. We conclude by a discussion on the relation between our work and that of Baril and Pallo (2014).
Parallelogram polyominoes, partially labelled Dyck paths, and the Delta conjecture (FULL VERSION)
We introduce area, bounce and dinv statistics on decorated parallelogram polyominoes, and prove that some of their q,t-enumerators match $\langle Δ_{h_m} e_{n+1},s_{k+1,1^{n-k}}\rangle$, extending in this way the work in (Aval et al. 2014). Also, we provide a bijective connection between decorated parallelogram polyominoes and decorated labelled Dyck paths, which allows us to prove the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient $\langle Δ_{e_{m+n-k-1}}'e_{m+n},h_m h_n\rangle$ predicted by the Delta conjecture in (Haglund et al. 2015). Finally, we define a statistic pmaj on partially labelled Dyck paths, which provides another conjectural combinatorial interpretation of $Δ_{h_{\ell}}Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$, cf. (Haglund et al. 2015).

For integers $n, m$ with $n \geq 1$ and $0 \leq m \leq n$, an $(n,m)$-Dyck path is a lattice path in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}$ using up steps $(0,1)$ and down steps $(1,0)$ that goes from the origin $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,n)$ and contains exactly $m$ up steps below the line $y=x$. The classical Chung-Feller theorem says that the total number of $(n,m)$-Dyck path is independent of $m$ and is equal to the $n$-th Catalan number $C_n=\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$. For any integer $k$ with $1 \leq k \leq n$, let $p_{n,m,k}$ be the total number of $(n,m)$-Dyck paths with $k$ peaks. Ma and Yeh proved that $p_{n,m,k}$=$p_{n,n-m,n-k}$ for $0 \leq m \leq n$, and $p_{n,m,k}+p_{n,m,n-k}=p_{n,m+1,k}+p_{n,m+1,n-k}$ for $1 \leq m \leq n-2$. In this paper we give bijective proofs of these two results. Using our bijections, we also get refined enumeration results on the numbers $p_{n,m,k}$ and $p_{n,m,k}+p_{n,m,n-k}$ according to the starting and ending steps.

List colouring of graphs and generalized Dyck paths

The Catalan numbers occur in various counting problems in combinatorics. This paper reveals a connection between the Catalan numbers and list colouring of graphs. Assume $G$ is a graph and $f:V(G) \to N$ is a mapping. For a nonnegative integer $m$, let $f^{(m)}$ be the extension of $f$ to the graph $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ for which $f^{(m)}(v)=|V(G)|$ for each vertex $v$ of $\overline{K_m}$. Let $m_c(G,f)$ be the minimum $m$ such that $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ is not $f^{(m)}$-choosable and $m_p(G,f)$ be the minimum $m$ such that $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ is not $f^{(m)}$-paintable.
We study the parameter $m_c(K_n, f)$ and $m_p(K_n,f)$ for arbitrary mappings $f$.
For $\vec{x}=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)$, an $\vec{x}$-dominated path ending at $(a, b)$ is a monotonic path $P$ of the $a \times b$ grid from $(0,0)$ to $(a,b)$ such that each vertex $(i,j)$ on $P$ satisfies $i \le x_{j+1}$.
Let $ψ(\vec{x})$ be the number of $\vec{x}$-dominated paths ending at $(x_n,n)$. By this definition, the Catalan number $C_n$ equals $ ψ((0,1, \ldots, n-1)) $. This paper proves that if $G=K_n$ has vertices $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n$ and $f(v_1) \le f(v_2) \le \ldots \le f(v_n)$, then $m_c(G,f)=m_p(G,f)=ψ(\vec{x}(f))$, where $\vec{x}(f)=(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)$ and $x_i=f(v_i)-i$ for $i=1, 2,\ldots, n$. Therefore, if $f(v_i)=n$, then $m_c(K_n, f)=m_p(K_n, f)$ equals the Catalan number $C_n$.
Arctic Curves in path models from the Tangent Method

Recently, Colomo and Sportiello introduced a powerful method, known as the \emph{Tangent Method}, for computing the arctic curve in statistical models which have a (non- or weakly-) intersecting lattice path formulation. We apply the Tangent Method to compute arctic curves in various models: the domino tiling of the Aztec diamond for which we recover the celebrated arctic circle; a model of Dyck paths equivalent to the rhombus tiling of a half-hexagon for which we find an arctic half-ellipse; another rhombus tiling model with an arctic parabola; the vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices, where we find the same arctic curve as for unconstrained alternating sign matrices. The latter case involves lattice paths that are non-intersecting but that are allowed to have osculating contact points, for which the Tangent Method was argued to still apply. For each problem we estimate the large size asymptotics of a certain one-point function using LU decomposition of the corresponding Gessel-Viennot matrices, and a reformulation of the result amenable to asymptotic analysis.
Reverse plane partitions of skew staircase shapes and $q$-Euler numbers

Recently, Naruse discovered a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogs of Naruse's hook length formula over semistandard Young tableaux (SSYTs) and reverse plane partitions (RPPs). As an application of their formula, they expressed certain $q$-Euler numbers, which are generating functions for SSYTs and RPPs of a zigzag border strip, in terms of weighted Dyck paths. They found a determinantal formula for the generating function for SSYTs of a skew staircase shape and proposed two conjectures related to RPPs of the same shape. One conjecture is a determinantal formula for the number of \emph{pleasant diagrams} in terms of Schröder paths and the other conjecture is a determinantal formula for the generating function for RPPs of a skew staircase shape in terms of $q$-Euler numbers.
In this paper, we show that the results of Morales, Pak and Panova on the $q$-Euler numbers can be derived from previously known results due to Prodinger by manipulating continued fractions. These $q$-Euler numbers are naturally expressed as generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{maj}. It has been proved by Huber and Yee that these $q$-Euler numbers are generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{inv}. By modifying Foata's bijection we construct a bijection on alternating permutations which sends the statistics involving \emph{maj} to the statistic involving \emph{inv}. We also prove the aforementioned two conjectures of Morales, Pak and Panova.
Decorated Dyck paths, the Delta conjecture, and a new q,t-square
We discuss the combinatorics of the decorated Dyck paths appearing in the Delta conjecture framework of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015) and Zabrocki (2016), by introducing two new statistics, bounce and bounce'. We then provide plethystic formulae for their q,t-enumerators, by proving in this way a decorated version of Haglund's q,t-Schroeder theorem, answering a question in Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015). In particular we provide both an algebraic and a combinatorial explanation of a symmetry conjectured in Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015) and Zabrocki (2016). Finally, we show a link between these results and the q,t-square theorem of Can and Loehr (2006) (conjectured by Loehr and Warrington (2007)), getting a new q,t-square, whose specialization at t=1/q is identical to the classical one, and hinting to a broader phenomenon of this type.
Double deficiencies of Dyck paths via the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection
We prove a recent conjecture by René Marczinzik involving certain statistics on Dyck paths that originate in the representation theory of Nakayama algebras of a linearly oriented quiver. We do so by analysing the effect of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection between Dyck paths and 321-avoiding permutations on these statistics, which was suggested by the result of a query issued to the online database FindStat.

We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.
The set of alternating sign matrices which are determined by their X-ray is a member of the Catalan family
We exhibit a bijection between Dyck paths and alternating sign matrices which are determined by their antidiagonal sums.
Rank Two Non-Commutative Laurent Phenomenon and Pseudo-Positivity

We study polynomial generalizations of the Kontsevich automorphisms acting on the skew-field of formal rational expressions in two non-commuting variables. Our main result is the Laurentness and pseudo-positivity of iterations of these automorphisms. The resulting expressions are described combinatorially using a generalization of the combinatorics of compatible pairs in a maximal Dyck path developed by Lee, Li, and Zelevinsky. By specializing to quasi-commuting variables we obtain pseudo-positive expressions for rank 2 quantum generalized cluster variables. In the binomial case when all internal exchange coefficients are zero, this quantum specialization provides a positive combinatorial construction of counting polynomials for Grassmannians of submodules in exceptional representations of valued quivers with two vertices.

In queuing theory, it is usual to have some models with a "reset" of the queue. In terms of lattice paths, it is like having the possibility of jumping from any altitude to zero. These objects have the interesting feature that they do not have the same intuitive probabilistic behaviour as classical Dyck paths (the typical properties of which are strongly related to Brownian motion theory), and this article quantifies some relations between these two types of paths. We give a bijection with some other lattice paths and a link with a continued fraction expansion. Furthermore, we prove several formulae for related combinatorial structures conjectured in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. Thanks to the kernel method and via analytic combinatorics, we provide the enumeration and limit laws of these "lattice paths with catastrophes" for any finite set of jumps. We end with an algorithm to generate such lattice paths uniformly at random.
Positroids Induced by Rational Dyck Paths
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects in one-to-one correspondence with the set of positroids. Here we characterize some of these families for the positroids we produce, namely Grassmann necklaces, decorated permutations, Le-diagrams, and move-equivalence classes of plabic graphs. Finally, we describe the matroid polytope of a given rational Dyck positroid.
LLT polynomials, chromatic quasisymmetric functions and graphs with cycles

We use a Dyck path model for unit-interval graphs to study the chromatic quasisymmetric functions introduced by Shareshian and Wachs, as well as vertical strip --- in particular, unicellular LLT polynomials.
We show that there are parallel phenomena regarding $e$-positivity of these two families of polynomials. In particular, we give several examples where the LLT polynomials behave like a "mirror image" of the chromatic quasisymmetric counterpart.
The Dyck path model is also extended to circular arc digraphs to obtain larger families of polynomials. This circular extensions of LLT polynomials has not been studied before. A lot of the combinatorics regarding unit interval graphs carries over to this more general setting, and we prove several statements regarding the $e$-coefficients of chromatic quasisymmetric functions and LLT polynomials.
In particular, we believe that certain $e$-positivity conjectures hold in all these families above. Furthermore, we study vertical-strip LLT polynomials, for which there is no natural chromatic quasisymmetric counterpart. These polynomials are essentially modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and are therefore of special interest.
In this more general framework, we are able to give a natural combinatorial interpretation for the $e$-coefficients for the line graph and the cycle graph, in both the chromatic and the LLT setting.
Cores with distinct parts and bigraded Fibonacci numbers

The notion of $(a,b)$-cores is closely related to rational $(a,b)$ Dyck paths due to Anderson's bijection, and thus the number of $(a,a+1)$-cores is given by the Catalan number $C_a$. Recent research shows that $(a,a+1)$ cores with distinct parts are enumerated by another important sequence- Fibonacci numbers $F_a$. In this paper, we consider the abacus description of $(a,b)$-cores to introduce the natural grading and generalize this result to $(a,as+1)$-cores. We also use the bijection with Dyck paths to count the number of $(2k-1,2k+1)$-cores with distinct parts. We give a second grading to Fibonacci numbers, induced by bigraded Catalan sequence $C_{a,b} (q,t)$.
A bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths

Bargraphs are a special class of convex polyominoes. They can be identified with lattice paths with unit steps north, east, and south that start at the origin, end on the $x$-axis, and stay strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs, which are used to represent histograms and to model polymers in statistical physics, have been enumerated in the literature by semiperimeter and by several other statistics, using different methods such as the wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer, and a bijection with certain Motzkin paths.
In this paper we describe an unusual bijection between bargraphs and Dyck paths, and study how some statistics are mapped by the bijection. As a consequence, we obtain a new interpretation of Catalan numbers, as counting bargraphs where the semiperimeter minus the number of peaks is fixed.

A Mahonian d-function is a Mahonian statistic that can be expressed as a linear combination of vincular pattern statistics of length at most d. Babson and Steingrimsson classified all Mahonian 3-functions up to trivial bijections and identified many of them with well-known Mahonian statistics in the literature. We prove a host of Mahonian 3-function equidistributions over pattern avoiding sets of permutations. Tools used include block decomposition, Dyck paths and generating functions.
