A general counting and sampling Lovász local lemma
Consider a constraint satisfaction problem $\mathbf{C}$ on finitely many independent random variables with dependency graph $G$. Let $p_a$ be the violation probability of a constraint $a\in \mathbf{C}$ and $N_G^2 (a)$ the set of constraints at distance one or two from $a$ in $G$. Suppose that, there exists $x\in (0,1)^{\mathbf{C}}$ such that, for a sufficiently small universal constant $c > 0$, and for all $a \in \mathbf{C}$, \[ p_a \leq c \cdot x_a \prod_{b\in N_G^2(a)}(1-x_b). \] Under the above analog of the asymmetric Lovász Local Lemma, we give an FPRAS for the probability that all constraints are satisfied, and an approximate sampler, running in polynomial expected time, for the product distribution conditioned on this event. The degree of the polynomial in the running time is independent of the domain sizes, constraint sizes, or degree of the dependency graph. Up to the choice of the constant $c$, our condition on $p_a$ matches known hardness results.
Our work builds on the method of Liu, Wang, Yin, Zhang, and Zhou, who obtained an FPRAS for the probability of satisfaction in the setting of the symmetric Lovász Local Lemma. Our sampling result is new even in this special case.
A deterministic $(1+\varepsilon)^n$ approximation for the permanent of a nonnegative matrix
For every fixed $0<\varepsilon\le1$, we give a deterministic strongly polynomial algorithm that, given a nonnegative matrix $A\in\mathbb{R}_{\ge0}^{n\times n}$, returns $Q$ satisfying $\operatorname{per} A\le Q\le(1+\varepsilon)^n\operatorname{per} A$.
Optimal girth-dependent bounds for the Bethe approximation of the permanent
For an $n\times n$ nonnegative matrix $A$, the Bethe permanent, which is computable in deterministic polynomial time, satisfies the tight universal comparison \[\operatorname{Bethe}(A) \leq \operatorname{per}(A) \leq 2^{n/2}\operatorname{Bethe}(A).\] The lower bound, due to Gurvits, is attained on forests. The upper bound, due to Anari and Rezaei, is attained by the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of $4$-cycles.
Confirming a conjecture of Anari, we provide an optimal girth-dependent refinement of the above comparison. More precisely, we show that if the bipartite support graph of $A$ has girth at least an even integer $g \geq 4$, then \[\operatorname{Bethe}(A) \leq \operatorname{per}(A) \leq 2^{2n/g}\operatorname{Bethe}(A).\] The upper bound is attained by the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of $g$-cycles.
On graphically local versions of metric embeddings
We consider the problem of graphically local metric embedding, i.e. embedding points from an arbitrary finite metric space into a target metric space while preserving, up to a small distortion, only a subset of the pairwise distances specified by a bounded degree graph $G$.
We provide a general reduction showing that, in many cases, this is no easier than embedding the points while approximately preserving all pairwise distances. As an illustration of our general reduction, we show that there exists a Euclidean metric space $X$ on $n$ points along with a graph $G = (X,E)$ of maximum degree $3$ such that any embedding of $X$ into $\ell_2^m$ which only preserves distances specified by $E$ up to a relative error of $(1+\varepsilon)$ must satisfy $m = Ω(\varepsilon^{-2}\log n)$.
Our lower bound matches the upper bound on the dimension coming from the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma for approximately preserving all pairwise distances; previously, such a lower bound was known only for the class of noncontracting embeddings [Schechtman-Shraibman, Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2009]. Moreover, the condition that the maximum degree of the graph is $3$ is best possible: for graphs $G$ of maximum degree $2$ (or more generally, treewidth at most $2$), any metric space embeds $G$-isometrically into any two-dimensional normed space.
On the maximum density of $r$-graphs in which every $(r+1)$-set spans $0$ or $2$ edges
In 1984, Frankl and Füredi asked for the maximum density of an $n$-vertex $r$-graph in which every $(r+1)$-set of vertices spans $0$ or $2$ edges. They gave a construction with asymptotic density $2^{1-r}$. We significantly improve this bound by constructing such $r$-graphs with density $Ω(r^{-3})$, thereby improving the dependence on $r$ from exponential to polynomial. We also obtain lower bounds for the more general problem in which every $(r+1)$-set spans an even number of edges from $\{0,2,\ldots,2k\}$.
The size of the spanning-tree spectrum of simple graphs
For a graph $G$, let $τ(G)$ denote the number of spanning trees. We show that for every fixed $0 < c < 1/4$, the number of distinct values of $τ(G)$, as $G$ ranges over simple graphs on $n$ vertices, is at least $\exp(c n \log n)$ for all sufficiently large $n$. This is optimal up to the choice of the constant $c$ and resolves a conjecture of Chan-Kontorovich-Pak regarding a problem of Sedláček from the late 1960s.
Thinned Quantile Shares are Universally Feasible
Quantile shares, introduced by Babichenko, Feldman, Holzman, and Narayan [STOC 2024], offer an ordinal, self-maximizing, and interpretable benchmark for fair division of indivisible goods, but their universal feasibility is known only conditional on the rainbow Erdős matching conjecture (EMC). Specifically, Babichenko et al. showed that assuming the rainbow EMC in the near-perfect matching regime, the $(1/2e)$-quantile share is universally feasible. In contrast, a simple argument shows that the $q$-quantile share can be infeasible for any $q > 1/e$. We introduce a one-parameter refinement of quantile shares, the $c$-thinned quantile share, obtained by thinning the inclusion probability in the random benchmark bundle by a factor of $c$ for a fixed constant $c\in(0,1]$. Our main result is that there exists a universal constant $c >0$ for which the $c$-thinned $e^{-c}$-quantile share is unconditionally universally feasible; this is best possible in the sense that for any $c \in (0,1]$, the $c$-thinned $q$-quantile share can be infeasible for any $q > e^{-c}$. Prior to this work, the only nontrivial share known to be universally feasible was Feige's residual maximin share. The thinning viewpoint also lets us remove the factor-two loss in the conditional result for the original quantile share: assuming the rainbow EMC, the $(1/e)$-quantile share is universally feasible.
Equality in Fill's spectral gap problem
We study the adjacent-transposition chain on the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with a regular parameter vector $\vec{p} = (p_{i,j})_{i\neq j}$. Fill's spectral gap conjecture, recently resolved in the affirmative by Greaves-Zhu, states that among all regular parameter vectors, the spectral gap of the transition matrix is minimized by the uniform vector $p_{i,j}= 1/2$ for all $i\neq j$.
We prove the stronger statement that among all regular parameter vectors, the spectral gap is minimized if and only if $\vec{p}$ has a neutral label, i.e., there exists $c \in [n]$ such that $p_{c,i} = 1/2$ for all $i\neq c$. Moreover, in this case, we show that the multiplicity of the second largest eigenvalue is equal to the number of neutral labels, unless the number of neutral labels is $n-2$ or $n$, in which case the multiplicity is $n-1$. This confirms a conjecture of Fill.

Let $r,k,\ell$ be integers such that $0\le\ell\le\binom{k}{r}$. Given a large $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$, we consider the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets which span exactly $\ell$ edges. If $\ell$ is 0 or $\binom{k}{r}$, this fraction can be exactly 1 (by taking $G$ to be empty or complete), but for all other values of $\ell$, one might suspect that this fraction is always significantly smaller than 1.
In this paper we prove an essentially optimal result along these lines: if $\ell$ is not 0 or $\binom{k}{r}$, then this fraction is at most $(1/e) + \varepsilon$, assuming $k$ is sufficiently large in terms of $r$ and $\varepsilon>0$, and $G$ is sufficiently large in terms of $k$. Previously, this was only known for a very limited range of values of $r,k,\ell$ (due to Kwan-Sudakov-Tran, Fox-Sauermann, and Martinsson-Mousset-Noever-Trujić). Our result answers a question of Alon-Hefetz-Krivelevich-Tyomkyn, who suggested this as a hypergraph generalisation of their "edge-statistics conjecture". We also prove a much stronger bound when $\ell$ is far from 0 and $\binom{k}{r}$.

The homogeneous Kuramoto model on a graph $G = (V,E)$ is a network of $|V|$ identical oscillators, one at each vertex, where every oscillator is coupled bidirectionally (with unit strength) to its neighbors in the graph. A graph $G$ is said to be globally synchronizing if, for almost every initial condition, the homogeneous Kuramoto model converges to the all-in-phase synchronous state. Confirming a conjecture of Abdalla, Bandeira, Kassabov, Souza, Strogatz, and Townsend, we show that with high probability, the random graph process becomes globally synchronizing as soon as it is connected. This is best possible, since connectivity is a necessary condition for global synchronization.
Rapid mixing of the down-up walk on matchings of a fixed size
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $m^*(G)$ denote the size of a maximum matching in $G$. We show that for any $δ> 0$ and for any $1 \leq k \leq (1-δ)m^*(G)$, the down-up walk on matchings of size $k$ in $G$ mixes in time polynomial in $n$. Previously, polynomial mixing was not known even for graphs with maximum degree $Δ$, and our result makes progress on a conjecture of Jain, Perkins, Sah, and Sawhney [STOC, 2022] that the down-up walk mixes in optimal time $O_{Δ,δ}(n\log{n})$.
In contrast with recent works analyzing mixing of down-up walks in various settings using the spectral independence framework, we bound the spectral gap by constructing and analyzing a suitable multi-commodity flow. In fact, we present constructions demonstrating the limitations of the spectral independence approach in our setting.

We present an explicit subset $A\subseteq \mathbb{N} = \{0,1,\ldots\}$ such that $A + A = \mathbb{N}$ and for all $\varepsilon > 0$, \[\lim_{N\to \infty}\frac{\big|\big\{(n_1,n_2): n_1 + n_2 = N, (n_1,n_2)\in A^2\big\}\big|}{N^{\varepsilon}} = 0.\] This answers a question of Erdős.
The binomial random graph is a bad inducer

For a finite graph $F$ and a value $p \in [0,1]$, let $I(F,p)$ denote the largest $y$ for which there is a sequence of graphs of edge density approaching $p$ so that the induced $F$-density of the sequence approaches $y$. We show that for all $F$ on at least three vertices and all $p \in (0,1)$, the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ has induced $F$-density strictly less than $I(F,p).$ This provides a negative answer to a problem posed by Liu, Mubayi and Reiher.
Our approach is in the limiting setting of graphons, and we in fact show a stronger result: the binomial random graph is never a \emph{local} maximum in the space of graphons of edge density $p$. This is done by finding a sequence of balanced perturbations of arbitrarily small norm that increase the $F$-density.
Optimal mixing of the down-up walk on independent sets of a given size

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$. We show that, for any $δ> 0$, the down-up walk on independent sets of size $k \leq (1-δ)α_c(Δ)n$ mixes in time $O_{Δ,δ}(k\log{n})$, thereby resolving a conjecture of Davies and Perkins in an optimal form. Here, $α_{c}(Δ)n$ is the NP-hardness threshold for the problem of counting independent sets of a given size in a graph on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$. Our mixing time has optimal dependence on $k,n$ for the entire range of $k$; previously, even polynomial mixing was not known. In fact, for $k = Ω_Δ(n)$ in this range, we establish a log-Sobolev inequality with optimal constant $Ω_{Δ,δ}(1/n)$.
At the heart of our proof are three new ingredients, which may be of independent interest. The first is a method for lifting $\ell_\infty$-independence from a suitable distribution on the discrete cube -- in this case, the hard-core model -- to the slice by proving stability of an Edgeworth expansion using a multivariate zero-free region for the base distribution. The second is a generalization of the Lee-Yau induction to prove log-Sobolev inequalities for distributions on the slice with considerably less symmetry than the uniform distribution. The third is a sharp decomposition-type result which provides a lossless comparison between the Dirichlet form of the original Markov chain and that of the so-called projected chain in the presence of a contractive coupling.

We show that the threshold for the binomial random $3$-partite, $3$-uniform hypergraph $G^{3}((n,n,n),p)$ to contain a Latin square is $Θ(\log{n}/n)$. We also prove analogous results for Steiner triple systems and proper list edge-colorings of the complete (bipartite) graph with random lists. Our results answer several related questions of Johansson, Luria-Simkin, Casselgren-Häggkvist, Simkin, and Kang-Kelly-Kühn-Methuku-Osthus.

Let $G = (V,E)$ be an undirected graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and vertex conductance $Ψ^*(G)$. We show that there exists a symmetric, stochastic matrix $P$, with off-diagonal entries supported on $E$, whose spectral gap $γ^*(P)$ satisfies \[Ψ^*(G)^{2}/\logΔ\lesssim γ^*(P) \lesssim Ψ^*(G).\] Our bound is optimal under the Small Set Expansion Hypothesis, and answers a question of Olesker-Taylor and Zanetti, who obtained such a result with $\logΔ$ replaced by $\log|V|$.
In order to obtain our result, we show how to embed a negative-type semi-metric $d$ defined on $V$ into a negative-type semi-metric $d'$ supported in $\mathbb{R}^{O(\logΔ)}$, such that the (fractional) matching number of the weighted graph $(V,E,d)$ is approximately equal to that of $(V,E,d')$.

We give an FPTAS for computing the number of matchings of size $k$ in a graph $G$ of maximum degree $Δ$ on $n$ vertices, for all $k \le (1-δ)m^*(G)$, where $δ>0$ is fixed and $m^*(G)$ is the matching number of $G$, and an FPTAS for the number of independent sets of size $k \le (1-δ) α_c(Δ) n$, where $α_c(Δ)$ is the NP-hardness threshold for this problem. We also provide quasi-linear time randomized algorithms to approximately sample from the uniform distribution on matchings of size $k \leq (1-δ)m^*(G)$ and independent sets of size $k \leq (1-δ)α_c(Δ)n$.
Our results are based on a new framework for exploiting local central limit theorems as an algorithmic tool. We use a combination of Fourier inversion, probabilistic estimates, and the deterministic approximation of partition functions at complex activities to extract approximations of the coefficients of the partition function. For our results for independent sets, we prove a new local central limit theorem for the hard-core model that applies to all fugacities below $λ_c(Δ)$, the uniqueness threshold on the infinite $Δ$-regular tree.

Let $M_n$ be a random $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. $\text{Bernoulli}(1/2)$ entries. We show that for fixed $k\ge 1$, \[\lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{1}{n}\log_2\mathbb{P}[\text{corank }M_n\ge k] = -k.\]
On the sampling Lovász Local Lemma for atomic constraint satisfaction problems
We study the problem of sampling an approximately uniformly random satisfying assignment for atomic constraint satisfaction problems i.e. where each constraint is violated by only one assignment to its variables. Let $p$ denote the maximum probability of violation of any constraint and let $Δ$ denote the maximum degree of the line graph of the constraints.
Our main result is a nearly-linear (in the number of variables) time algorithm for this problem, which is valid in a Lovász local lemma type regime that is considerably less restrictive compared to previous works. In particular, we provide sampling algorithms for the uniform distribution on:
(1) $q$-colorings of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with $Δ\lesssim q^{(k-4)/3 + o_{q}(1)}.$
The exponent $1/3$ improves the previously best-known $1/7$ in the case $q, Δ= O(1)$ [Jain, Pham, Vuong; arXiv, 2020] and $1/9$ in the general case [Feng, He, Yin; STOC 2021].
(2) Satisfying assignments of Boolean $k$-CNF formulas with $Δ\lesssim 2^{k/5.741}.$
The constant $5.741$ in the exponent improves the previously best-known $7$ in the case $k = O(1)$ [Jain, Pham, Vuong; arXiv, 2020] and $13$ in the general case [Feng, He, Yin; STOC 2021].
(3) Satisfying assignments of general atomic constraint satisfaction problems with $p\cdot Δ^{7.043} \lesssim 1.$
The constant $7.043$ improves upon the previously best-known constant of $350$ [Feng, He, Yin; STOC 2021].
At the heart of our analysis is a novel information-percolation type argument for showing the rapid mixing of the Glauber dynamics for a carefully constructed projection of the uniform distribution on satisfying assignments. Notably, there is no natural partial order on the space, and we believe that the techniques developed for the analysis may be of independent interest.

Let $\vec{w} = (w_1,\dots, w_n) \in \mathbb{R}^{n}$. We show that for any $n^{-2}\leε\le 1$, if \[\#\{\vecξ \in \{0,1\}^{n}: \langle \vecξ, \vec{w} \rangle = τ\} \ge 2^{-εn}\cdot 2^{n}\] for some $τ\in \mathbb{R}$, then \[\#\{\langle \vecξ, \vec{w} \rangle : \vecξ \in \{0,1\}^{n}\} \le 2^{O(\sqrtεn)}.\] This exponentially improves the $ε$ dependence in a recent result of Nederlof, Pawlewicz, Swennenhuis, and Węgrzycki and leads to a similar improvement in the parameterized (by the number of bins) runtime of bin packing.
