A result on spanning trees with bounded total excess
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph and $T$ a spanning tree of $G$. Let $ρ(G)$ denote the adjacency spectral radius of $G$. The $k$-excess of a vertex $v$ in $T$ is defined as $\max\{0,d_T(v)-k\}$. The total $k$-excess $\mbox{te}(T,k)$ is defined by $\mbox{te}(T,k)=\sum\limits_{v\in V(T)}{\max\{0,d_T(v)-k\}}$. A tree $T$ is said to be a $k$-tree if $d_T(v)\leq k$ for any $v\in V(T)$, that is to say, the maximum degree of a $k$-tree is at most $k$. In fact, $T$ is a spanning $k$-tree if and only if $\mbox{te}(T,k)=0$. This paper studies a generalization of spanning $k$-trees using a concept called total $k$-excess and proposes a lower bound for $ρ(G)$ in a connected graph $G$ to ensure that $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ with $\mbox{te}(T,k)\leq b$, where $k$ and $b$ are two nonnegative integers with $k\geq\max\{5,b+3\}$ and $(b,k)\neq(2,5)$.
Representation theory for polymatroids
We develop a theory of representations of (discrete) polymatroids over tracts in terms of Plücker coordinates and suitable Plücker relations. As special cases, we recover polymatroids themselves as polymatroid representations over the Krasner hyperfield K and M-convex functions as polymatroid representations over the tropical hyperfield. We introduce and study several useful operations for polymatroid representations, such as translation and refined notions of minors and duality which have better properties than the existing definitions; for example, deletion and contraction become dual operations (up to translation) in our setting. We also prove an idempotency principle which asserts that polymatroids which are not translates of matroids are representable only over tracts that are idempotent in a certain specific sense (in particular -1 = 1). The space of all representations of a polymatroid J, which we call the thin Schubert cell of J, is represented by an algebraic object called {universal tract of J. When we restrict to just the 3-term Plücker relations, we obtain the weak thin Schubert cell, and passing to torus orbits yields the realization space. These are represented by the universal pasture and the foundation of J, respectively. We exhibit a canonical bijection between the universal tract and the universal pasture, which is new even in the case of matroids, and we show that the foundation of a polymatroid is generated by cross ratios. We also describe a (possibly incomplete) list of multiplicative relations between cross ratios. Thin Schubert cells and realization spaces are canonically embedded in certain tori. Over idempotent tracts, we show that thin Schubert cells contain a canonical torus orbit and split naturally as a product of the realization space with this distinguished torus.

Finding one excellent element in case of one lie
Published • View Publication • BIB
An n-element set contains an unknown number of excellent elements, and our goal is to identify at least one of these elements. The members of a family of subsets can be asked if they contain at least one excellent element or not. At most one of the answers can be wrong. We find the smallest family that finds one excellent element or claims that there is none.
On the classification of triply-transitive strongly-regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ= (Ω,E)$ be a strongly-regular graph with adjacency matrix $A_1$, and let $A_2$ be the adjacency matrix of its complement. For any vertex $ω\in Ω$, we define $E_{0,ω}^*$ $E_{1,ω}^*$ and $E_{2,ω}^*$ to be respectively the diagonal matrices whose main diagonal is the row corresponding to $ω$ in the matrices $I, A_1$, and $A_2$. The Terwilliger algebra of $Γ$ with respect to the vertex $ω\in Ω$ is the subalgebra $T_ω= \left\langle I,A_1,A_2,E_{0,ω}^*,E_{1,ω}^*,E_{2,ω}^* \right\rangle$ of the complex matrix algebra $\operatorname{M_{|Ω|}}(\mathbb{C})$. The algebra $T_ω$ contains the subspace $T_{0,ω} = \operatorname{Span}\left\{ E_{i,ω}^*A_jE_{k,ω}^*: 0\leq i,j,k\leq 2 \right\}$. In addition, if $G = \AutΓ$, then $T_ω$ is a subalgebra of the centralizer algebra $\tilde{T}_ω= \End{G_ω}{\mathbb{C}^Ω}$. The strongly-regular graph $Γ=(Ω,E)$ is triply transitive if $Γ$ is vertex transitive and $T_{0,ω} = T_ω= \tilde{T}_ω$, for any $ω\in Ω$. In this paper, we classify all triply transitive strongly-regular graphs that are not isomorphic to the collinearity graph of the polar space $O_{6}^-(q)$, where $q$ is a prime power, or the affine polar graph $\vo_{2m}^\varepsilon(2)$, where $m\geq 1$ and $\varepsilon = \pm 1$.

Cops and Robbers, Clique Covers, and Induced Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the Cops and Robbers game played on finite simple graphs. In a graph $G$, the number of cops required to capture a robber in the Cops and Robbers game is denoted by $c(G)$. For all graphs $G$, $c(G) \leq α(G) \leq θ(G)$ where $α(G)$ and $θ(G)$ are the independence number and clique cover number respectively. In 2022 Turcotte asked if $c(G) < α(G)$ for all graphs with $α(G) \geq 3$. Recently, Char, Maniya, and Pradhan proved this is false, at least when $α= 3$,by demonstrating the compliment of the Shrikhande graph has cop number and independence number $3$. We prove, using random graphs, the stronger result that for all $k\geq 1$ there exists a graph $G$ such that $c(G) = α(G) = θ(G) = k$. Next, we consider the structure of graphs with $c(G) = θ(G) \geq 3$. We prove, using structural arguments, that any graphs $G$ which satisfies $c(G) = θ(G) = k \geq 3$ contain induced cycles of all lengths $3\leq t \leq k+1$. This implies all perfect graphs $G$ with $α(G)\geq 4$ have $c(G) < α(G)$. Additionally,we discuss if typical triangle-free and $C_4$-free graphs will have $c(G) < α(G)$.
Unavoidable pivot-minors in graphs of large rank-depth
Shrub-depth and rank-depth are related graph parameters that are dense analogs of tree-depth. We prove that for every positive integer $t$, every graph of sufficiently large rank-depth contains a pivot-minor isomorphic to a path on $t$ vertices or a graph consisting of two disjoint cliques of size $t$ joined by a half graph. This answers an open problem raised by Kwon, McCarty, Oum, and Wollan in 2021.

The Total Coloring Conjecture holds for planar graphs without three special subgraphs
The Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) for planar graphs with a maximum degree of six remains open. Previous studies suggest that TCC is valid for such graphs if they do not contain any subgraph isomorphic to a 4-fan. In this paper, we present an improved conclusion by establishing that TCC holds for planar graphs that are free of three particular substructures, namely the mushroom, the tent, and the cone. This advancement enhances previous findings by demonstrating that TCC is applicable to planar graphs with a maximum degree of six, which can accommodate sparse 4-fans, 5-fans, 5-wheels, and 6-wheels.

Transversal packings in families of percolated hypergraphs
Let $F$ be a strictly $1$-balanced $k$-graph on $s$ vertices with $t$ edges and $δ_{F,d}^T$ be the infimum of $δ>0$ such that for every $α>0$ and sufficiently large $n\in \mathbb{N}$, every $k$-graph system $\mathbf H=\{H_{1}, H_{2}, \dots ,H_{tn}\}$ on the same $sn$ vertices with $δ_d(H_i)\ge (δ+α)\binom{sn-d}{k-d}$, $i\in [tn]$ contains a transversal $F$-factor, that is, an $F$-factor consisting of exactly one edge from each $H_i$. In this paper we prove the following result. Let $\mathbf{H} =\{H_{1}, H_{2}, \dots ,H_{tn}\}$ be a $k$-graph system where each $H_{i}$ is an $sn$-vertex $k$-graph with $δ_d(H_i)\ge (δ_{F,d}^T+α)\binom{sn-d}{k-d}$. Then with high probability $\mathbf{H}(p) :=\{H_{1}(p), H_{2}(p), \dots ,H_{tn}(p)\}$ contains a transversal $F$-factor, where $H_i(p)$ is a random subhypergraph of $H_i$ and $p=Ω(n^{-1/d_1(F)-1}(\log n)^{1/t})$. This extends a recent result by Kelly, Müyesser and Pokrovskiy, and independently by Joos, Lang and Sanhueza-Matamala. Moreover, the assumption on $p$ is best possible up to a constant. Along the way, we also obtain a spread version of a result of Pikhurko on perfect matchings in $k$-partite $k$-graphs.

A coarse Halin Grid Theorem with applications to quasi-transitive, locally finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a coarse version of Halin's Grid Theorem: Every one-ended, locally finite graph that contains the disjoint union of infinitely many rays as an asymptotic minor also contains the half-grid as an asymptotic minor. More generally, we show that the same holds for arbitrary (not necessarily one-ended or locally finite) graphs under additional, necessary assumptions on the minor-models of the infinite rays. This resolves a conjecture of Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu. As an application, we show that every one-ended, quasi-transitive, locally finite graph contains the half-grid as an asymptotic minor and as a diverging minor. This in particular includes all locally finite Cayley graphs of one-ended finitely generated groups and solves a problem of Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu.

Anti-Ramsey number of intersecting cliques
An edge-colored graph is called a rainbow graph if all its edges have distinct colors. The anti-Ramsey number $ar(n, G)$, for a graph $G$ and a positive integer $n$, is defined as the minimum number of colors $r$ such that every exact $r$-edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains at least one rainbow copy of $G$. A $(k, r)$-fan graph, denoted $F_{k, r}$, is a graph composed of $k$ cliques each of size $r$, all intersecting at exactly one common vertex. In this paper, we determine $ar(n, F_{k, r})$ for $n \geq 256r^{16}(k+1)^5$, $k \geq 1$, and $r \geq 2$.

On the Turánability and tileability of oriented graphs
An oriented graph $H$ is Turánable (resp. tileable) if there exist $n_0 \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every regular tournament on $n \ge n_0$ vertices contains a copy of $H$ (resp. a perfect $H$-tiling). We disprove a conjectured characterization of Turánable oriented graphs by DeBiasio, Han, Lo, Molla, Piga, and Treglown, show that there are Turánable oriented graphs which are not tileable, and provide a new example of tileable oriented graph.
Unavoidable butterfly minors in digraphs of large cycle rank
Cycle rank is one of the depth parameters for digraphs introduced by Eggan in 1963. We show that there exists a function $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$ such that every digraph of cycle rank at least $f(k)$ contains a directed cycle chain, a directed ladder, or a directed tree chain of order $k$ as a butterfly minor. We also investigate a new connection between cycle rank and a directed analogue of the weak coloring number of graphs.

Planar Turán number of quasi-double stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph H, we call a graph $\textit{H-free}$ if it does not contain H as a subgraph. The planar Turán number of a graph H, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar H-free graph on n vertices. A (h,k)-quasi-double star $W_{h,k}$, obtained from a path $P_3=v_1v_2v_3$ by adding h leaves and k leaves to the vertices $v_1$ and $v_3$, respectively, is a subclass of caterpillars. In this paper, we study $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})$ for all $1\le h\le 2\le k\le 5$, and obtain some tight bounds $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})\leq\frac{3(h+k)}{h+k+2}n$ for $3\le h+k\le 5$ with equality holds if $(h+k+2)\mid n$, and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{1,5})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ with equality holds if $12\mid n$. Also we show that $\frac{9}{4}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,4})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ and $\frac{5}{2}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,5})\le \frac{17}{6}n$, respectively.

Splitting a graph by a given partition of the set of vertices based on the minimum weight of the induced trees
A method for considering a weighted directed graph with an accuracy of up to a given partition of the set of vertices is proposed. The resulting digraph (the splitting graph) does not contain arcs inside each partition element, and the arcs between the partition atoms are calculated in a special way taking into account the arcs of the original directed graph inside the atoms. This accounting is based on minimal trees defined on atoms. A study was made of what information about the original digraph is preserved in its splitting.

Spectral extremal problems for degenerate graphs
A family of graphs is called degenerate if it contains at least one bipartite graph. In this paper, we investigate the spectral extremal problems for a degenerate family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$. By employing covering and independent covering of graphs, we establish a spectral stability result for $\mathcal{F}$. Using this stability result, we prove two general theorems that characterize spectral extremal graphs for a broad class of graph families $\mathcal{F}$ and imply several new and known results. Meanwhile, we establish the correlation between extremal graphs and spectral extremal graphs for $\mathcal{F}$.

Turán type problems for a fixed graph and a linear forest
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is $\mathscr{F}$-free if $G$ does not contain any $F\in \mathscr{F}$ as a subgraph. The Turán number, denoted by $ex(n, \mathscr{F})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\mathscr{F}$-free graph. Let $F $ be a fixed graph with $ χ(F) \geq 3 $. A forest $H$ is called a linear forest if all components of $H$ are paths. In this paper, we determined the exact value of $ex(n, \{H, F\}) $ for a fixed graph $F$ with $χ(F)\geq 3$ and a linear forest $H$ with at least $2$ components and each component with size at least $3$.
$(Δ-1)$-dicolouring of digraphs
In 1977, Borodin and Kostochka conjectured that every graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 9$ is $(Δ-1)$-colourable, unless it contains a clique of size $Δ$. In 1999, Reed confirmed the conjecture when $Δ\geq 10^{14}$. We propose different generalisations of this conjecture for digraphs, and prove the analogue of Reed's result for each of them. The chromatic number and clique number are replaced respectively by the dichromatic number and the biclique number of digraphs. If $D$ is a digraph such that $\min(\tildeΔ(D),Δ^+(D)) = Δ\geq 9$, we conjecture that $D$ has dichromatic number at most $Δ-1$, unless either (i) $D$ contains a biclique of size $Δ$, or (ii) $D$ contains a biclique $K$ of size $Δ-2$, a directed $3$-cycle $\vec{C_3}$ disjoint from $K$, and all possible arcs in both directions between $\vec{C_3}$ and $K$. If true, this implies the conjecture of Borodin and Kostochka. We prove it when $Δ$ is large enough, thereby generalising the result of Reed. We finally give a sufficient condition for a digraph $D$ to have dichromatic number at most $Δ_{\min}(D)-1$, assuming that $Δ_{\min}(D)$ is large enough. In particular, this holds when the underlying graph of $D$ has no clique of size $Δ_{\min}(D)$, thus yielding a third independent generalisation of Reed's result. We further give a hardness result witnessing that our sufficient condition is best possible. To obtain these new upper bounds on the dichromatic number, we prove a dense decomposition lemma for digraphs having large maximum degree, which generalises to the directed setting the so-called dense decomposition of graphs due to Molloy and Reed. We believe this may be of independent interest, especially as a tool in various applications.

Maximal sets of a given diameter in Hamming cubes
A subset of the Hamming cube over $n$-letter alphabet is said to be $d$-maximal if its diameter is $d$, and adding any point increases the diameter. Our main result shows that each $d$-maximal set is either of size at most $(n+o(n))^d$ or contains a non-trivial Hamming ball. The bound of $(n+o(n))^d$ is asymptotically tight. Additionally, we give a non-trivial lower bound on the size of any $d$-maximal set and show that the number of essentially different $d$-maximal sets is finite.

Polynomial-to-exponential transition in 3-uniform Ramsey numbers
Let $r_k(s, e; t)$ denote the smallest $N$ such that any red/blue edge coloring of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $N$ vertices contains either $e$ red edges among some $s$ vertices, or a blue clique of size $t$. Erd\H os and Hajnal introduced the study of this Ramsey number in 1972 and conjectured that for fixed $s>k\geq 3$, there is a well defined value $h_k(s)$ such that $r_k(s, h_k(s)-1; t)$ is polynomial in $t$, while $r_k(s, h_k(s); t)$ is exponential in a power of $t$. Erd\H os later offered \$500 for a proof. Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov proved the conjecture for $k=3$ and $3$-adically special values of $s$, and Mubayi and Razborov proved it for $s > k \geq 4$. We prove the conjecture for $k=3$ and all $s$, settling all remaining cases of the problem. We do this by solving a novel Turán-type problem: what is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph in which all tight components are tripartite? We show that the balanced iterated blowup of an edge is an exact extremizer for this problem for all $n$.

Paths and Intersections: Exact Emulators for Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study vertex sparsification for preserving distances in planar graphs. Given an edge-weighted planar graph with $k$ terminals, the goal is to construct an emulator, which is a smaller edge-weighted planar graph that contains the terminals and exactly preserves the pairwise distances between them. We construct exact planar emulators of size $O(f^2k^2)$ in the setting where terminals lie on $f$ faces in the planar embedding of the input graph. Our result generalizes and interpolates between the previous results of Chang and Ophelders and Goranci, Henzinger, and Peng which is an $O(k^2)$ bound in the setting where all terminals lie on a single face (i.e., $f=1$), and the result of Krauthgamer, Nguyen, and Zondiner, which is an $O(k^4)$ bound for the general case (i.e., $f=k$). Our construction follows a recent new way of analyzing graph structures, by viewing graphs as paths and their intersections, which we believe is of independent interest.
