Sidon Sets and graphs without 4-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain a 4-cycle has a rich history in extremal graph theory. Using Sidon sets constructed by Bose and Chowla, for each odd prime power $q$ we construct a graph with $q^2 - q - 2$ vertices that does not contain a 4-cycle and has at least $\frac{1}{2}q^3 - q^2 - O(q^{3/4})$ edges. This disproves a conjecture of Abreu, Balbuena, and Labbate concerning the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(q^2 - q - 2, C_4)$.
Free resolution of powers of monomial ideals and Golod rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper we present a criterion for componentwise linearity of powers of monomial ideals. In particular, we prove that if a square-free monomial ideal $I$ contains no variable and some power of $I$ is componentwise linear, then $I$ satisfies gcd condition. For a square-free monomial ideal $I$ which contains no variable, we show that $S/I$ is a Golod ring provided that for some integer $s\geq 1$, the ideal $I^s$ has linear quotient with respect to a monomial order. We also provide a lower bound for some Betti numbers of powers of a square-free monomial ideal which is generated in a single degree.

Monotonicity and log-behavior of some functions related to the Euler Gamma function
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.

Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem for finite commutative semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup written additively, and let $\exp(\mathcal{S})$ be its exponent which is defined as the least common multiple of all periods of the elements in $\mathcal{S}$. For every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ (repetition allowed), let $σ(T) \in \mathcal{S}$ denote the sum of all terms of $T$. Define the Davenport constant $D(\mathcal{S})$ of $\mathcal{S}$ to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ with $σ(T')=σ(T)$, and define the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem constant $E(\mathcal{S})$ to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with $|T|-|T'|=\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})$ and $σ(T')=σ(T)$. When $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite abelian group, it is well known that $\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})=|\mathcal{S}|$ and $E(\mathcal{S})=D(\mathcal{S})+|\mathcal{S}|-1$. In this paper we investigate whether $E(\mathcal{S})\leq D(\mathcal{S})+\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil \exp(\mathcal{S})-1$ holds true for all finite commutative semigroups $\mathcal{S}$. We provide a positive answer to the question above for some classes of finite commutative semigroups, including group-free semigroups, elementary semigroups, and archimedean semigroups with certain constraints.

Speeding up Deciphering by Hypergraph Ordering
Published • View Publication • BIB
The "Gluing Algorithm" of Semaev [Des.\ Codes Cryptogr.\ 49 (2008), 47--60] --- that finds all solutions of a sparse system of linear equations over the Galois field $GF(q)$ --- has average running time $O(mq^{\max \left\vert \cup_{1}^{k}X_{j}\right\vert -k}), $ where $m$ is the total number of equations, and $\cup_{1}^{k}X_{j}$ is the set of all unknowns actively occurring in the first $k$ equations. Our goal here is to minimize the exponent of $q$ in the case where every equation contains at most three unknowns. %Applying hypergraph-theoretic methods we prove The main result states that if the total number $\left\vert \cup_{1}^{m}X_{j}\right\vert$ of unknowns is equal to $m$, then the best achievable exponent is between $c_1m$ and $c_2m$ for some positive constants $c_1$ and $c_2.$

Inside the clustering threshold for random linear equations
We study a random system of $cn$ linear equations over $n$ variables in GF(2), where each equation contains exactly $r$ variables; this is equivalent to $r$-XORSAT. \cite{ikkm,amxor} determined the clustering threshold, $c^*_r$: if $c=c^*_r+\e$ for any constant $\e>0$, then \aas the solutions partition into well-connected, well-separated {\em clusters} (with probability tending to 1 as $n\rightarrow\infty$). This is part of a general clustering phenomenon which is hypothesized to arise in most of the commonly studied models of random constraint satisfaction problems, via sophisticated but mostly non-rigorous techniques from statistical physics. We extend that study to the range $c=c^*_r+o(1)$, showing that if $c=c^*_r+n^{-\d}, \d>0$, then the connectivity parameter of each $r$-XORSAT cluster is $n^{Θ(\d)}$, as compared to $O(\log n)$ when $c=c^*_r+\e$. This means that one can move between any two solutions in the same cluster via a sequence of solutions where consecutive solutions differ on at most $n^{Θ(\d)}$ variables; this is tight up to the implicit constant. In contrast, moving to a solution in another cluster requires that some pair of consecutive solutions differ in at least $n^{1-O(\d)}$ variables. Along the way, we prove that in a random $r$-uniform hypergraph with edge-density $n^{-\d}$ above the $k$-core threshold, \aas every vertex not in the $k$-core can be removed by a sequence of $n^{Θ(\d)}$ vertex-deletions in which the deleted vertex has degree less than $k$; again, this is tight up to the implicit constant.

On generalized Ramsey numbers for 3-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The well-known Ramsey number $r(t,u)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every $K_t$-free graph of order $n$ contains an independent set of size $u$. In other words, it contains a subset of $u$ vertices with no $K_2$. Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced a more general problem replacing $K_2$ by $K_s$ for $2\le s<t$. Extending the problem of determining Ramsey numbers they defined the numbers $$ f_{s,t}(n)=\min \big{\{} \max \{|W| : W\subseteq V(G) \text{and} G[W] \text{contains no} K_s\}\big{\}}, $$ where the minimum is taken over all $K_t$-free graphs $G$ of order $n$. In this note, we study an analogous function $f_{s,t}^{(3)}(n)$ for 3-uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we show that there are constants $c_1$ and $c_2$ depending only on $s$ such that $$ c_1(\log n)^{1/4} \left(\frac{\log\log n}{\log\log\log n}\right)^{1/2} < f_{s, s+1}^{(3)}(n) < c_2 \log n. $$

A Lower Bound on the Crossing Number of Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider the embedding of a complete $d$-uniform geometric hypergraph with $n$ vertices in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where each hyperedge is represented as a $(d-1)$-simplex, and a pair of hyperedges is defined to cross if they are vertex-disjoint and contains a common point in the relative interior of the simplices corresponding to them. As a corollary of the Van Kampen-Flores Theorem, it can be seen that such a hypergraph contains $Ω(\frac{2^d}{\sqrt{d}})$ $n\choose 2d$ crossing pairs of hyperedges. Using Gale Transform and Ham Sandwich Theorem, we improve this lower bound to $Ω(\frac{2^d \log d}{\sqrt{d}})$ $n\choose 2d$.
Shellable drawings and the cylindrical crossing number of $K_n$
The Harary-Hill Conjecture States that the number of crossings in any drawing of the complete graph $ K_n $ in the plane is at least $Z(n):=\frac{1}{4}\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\right\rfloor\left\lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor$. In this paper, we settle the Harary-Hill conjecture for {\em shellable drawings}. We say that a drawing $D$ of $ K_n $ is {\em $ s $-shellable} if there exist a subset $ S = \{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_ s\}$ of the vertices and a region $R$ of $D$ with the following property: For all $1 \leq i < j \leq s$, if $D_{ij}$ is the drawing obtained from $D$ by removing $v_1,v_2,\ldots v_{i-1},v_{j+1},\ldots,v_{s}$, then $v_i$ and $v_j$ are on the boundary of the region of $D_{ij}$ that contains $R$. For $ s\geq n/2 $, we prove that the number of crossings of any $ s $-shellable drawing of $ K_n $ is at least the long-conjectured value Z(n). Furthermore, we prove that all cylindrical, $ x $-bounded, monotone, and 2-page drawings of $ K_n $ are $ s $-shellable for some $ s\geq n/2 $ and thus they all have at least $ Z(n) $ crossings. The techniques developed provide a unified proof of the Harary-Hill conjecture for these classes of drawings.

Hypercontractivity of spherical averages in Hamming space
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the linear space of functions on the binary hypercube and the linear operator $S_δ$ acting by averaging a function over a Hamming sphere of radius $δn$ around every point. It is shown that this operator has a dimension-independent bound on the norm $L_p \to L_2$ with $p = 1+(1-2δ)^2$. This result evidently parallels a classical estimate of Bonami and Gross for $L_p \to L_q$ norms for the operator of convolution with a Bernoulli noise. The estimate for $S_δ$ is harder to obtain since the latter is neither a part of a semigroup, nor a tensor power. The result is shown by a detailed study of the eigenvalues of $S_δ$ and $L_p\to L_2$ norms of the Fourier multiplier operators $Π_a$ with symbol equal to a characteristic function of the Hamming sphere of radius $a$ (in the notation common in boolean analysis $Π_a f=f^{=a}$, where $f^{=a}$ is a degree-$a$ component of function $f$). A sample application of the result is given: Any set $A\subset \FF_2^n$ with the property that $A+A$ contains a large portion of some Hamming sphere (counted with multiplicity) must have cardinality a constant multiple of $2^n$.

On topological and geometric $(19_4)$ configurations
Published in European J. Combin., 50:4-17, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
An $(n_k)$ configuration is a set of $n$ points and $n$ lines such that each point lies on $k$ lines while each line contains $k$ points. The configuration is geometric, topological, or combinatorial depending on whether lines are considered to be straight lines, pseudolines, or just combinatorial lines. The existence and enumeration of $(n_k)$ configurations for a given $k$ has been subject to active research. A current front of research concerns geometric $(n_4)$ configurations: it is now known that geometric $(n_4)$ configurations exist for all $n \ge 18$, apart from sporadic exceptional cases. In this paper, we settle by computational techniques the first open case of $(19_4)$ configurations: we obtain all topological $(19_4)$ configurations among which none are geometrically realizable.

On the Crossing Number of Complete Graphs with an Uncrossed Hamiltonian Cycle
We prove new lower bounds on the crossing number of a complete graphs assuming that it is drawn in such a way that it contains a Hamiltonian cycle with no crossings.
On wheel-free graphs
A wheel is a graph formed by a chordless cycle and a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. We prove that every 3-connected graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is in fact minimally 3-connected. We give a new proof of a theorem of Thomassen and Toft: every graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is 3-colorable.

Square-Free Shuffles of Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $u \shuffle v$ denote the set of all shuffles of the words $u$ and $v$. It is shown that for each integer $n \geq 3$ there exists a square-free ternary word $u$ of length $n$ such that $u\shuffle u$ contains a square-free word. This property is then shown to also hold for infinite words, i.e., there exists an infinite square-free word $u$ on three letters such that $u$ can be shuffled with itself to produce an infinite square-free word $w \in u \shuffle u$.
The Manickam-Miklós-Singhi Conjectures for Sets and Vector Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
More than twenty-five years ago, Manickam, Miklós, and Singhi conjectured that for positive integers $n,k$ with $n \geq 4k$, every set of $n$ real numbers with nonnegative sum has at least $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ $k$-element subsets whose sum is also nonnegative. We verify this conjecture when $n \geq 8k^{2}$, which simultaneously improves and simplifies a bound of Alon, Huang, and Sudakov and also a bound of Pokrovskiy when $k < 10^{45}$. Moreover, our arguments resolve the vector space analogue of this conjecture. Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field. Assign a real-valued weight to each $1$-dimensional subspace in $V$ so that the sum of all weights is zero. Define the weight of a subspace $S \subset V$ to be the sum of the weights of all the $1$-dimensional subspaces it contains. We prove that if $n \geq 3k$, then the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces in $V$ with nonnegative weight is at least the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces in $V$ that contain a fixed $1$-dimensional subspace. This result verifies a conjecture of Manickam and Singhi from 1988.

The expected characteristic and permanental polynomials of the random Gram matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
A t by n random matrix A is formed by sampling n independent random column vectors, each containing t components. The random Gram matrix of size n, G_n, contains the dot products between all pairs of column vectors in the randomly generated matrix A; that is, G_n = transpose(A) A. The matrix G_n has characteristic roots coinciding with the singular values of A. Furthermore, the sequences det(G_i) and per(G_i) (for i = 0, 1, ..., n) are factors that comprise the expected coefficients of the characteristic and permanental polynomials of G_n. We prove theorems that relate the generating functions and recursions for the traces of matrix powers, expected characteristic coefficients, expected determinants E(det(G_n)), and expected permanents E(per(G_n)) in terms of each other. Using the derived recursions, we exhibit the efficient computation of the expected determinant and expected permanent of a random Gram matrix G_n, formed according to any underlying distribution. These theoretical results may be used both to speed up numerical algorithms and to investigate the numerical properties of the expected characteristic and permanental coefficients of any matrix comprised of independently sampled columns.
On graphs with no induced subdivision of $K_4$
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 102:924-947, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a decomposition theorem for graphs that do not contain a subdivision of $K_4$ as an induced subgraph where $K_4$ is the complete graph on four vertices. We obtain also a structure theorem for the class $\cal C$ of graphs that contain neither a subdivision of $K_4$ nor a wheel as an induced subgraph, where a wheel is a cycle on at least four vertices together with a vertex that has at least three neighbors on the cycle. Our structure theorem is used to prove that every graph in $\cal C$ is 3-colorable and entails a polynomial-time recognition algorithm for membership in $\cal C$. As an intermediate result, we prove a structure theorem for the graphs whose cycles are all chordless.
Linear balanceable and subcubic balanceable graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 75(2):150-166, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
In [{Structural properties and decomposition of linear balanced matrices}, {\it Mathematical Programming}, 55:129--168, 1992], Conforti and Rao conjectured that every balanced bipartite graph contains an edge that is not the unique chord of a cycle. We prove this conjecture for balanced bipartite graphs that do not contain a cycle of length 4 (also known as linear balanced bipartite graphs), and for balanced bipartite graphs whose maximum degree is at most 3. We in fact obtain results for more general classes, namely linear balanceable and subcubic balanceable graphs. Additionally, we prove that cubic balanced graphs contain a pair of twins, a result that was conjectured by Morris, Spiga and Webb in [Balanced Cayley graphs and balanced planar graphs, {\it Discrete Mathematics}, 310:3228--3235, 2010].
Graphs that do not contain a cycle with a node that has at least two neighbors on it
Published in P. Aboulker, M. Radovanovic, N. Trotignon and K. Vuskovic. Graphs that do not contain a cycle with a node that has at least two neighbors on it. SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 26(4):1510-1531, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
We recall several known results about minimally 2-connected graphs, and show that they all follow from a decomposition theorem. Starting from an analogy with critically 2-connected graphs, we give structural characterizations of the classes of graphs that do not contain as a subgraph and as an induced subgraph, a cycle with a node that has at least two neighbors on the cycle. From these characterizations we get polynomial time recognition algorithms for these classes, as well as polynomial time algorithms for vertex-coloring and edge-coloring.

On generalized Hadamard matrices GH(q,q)'s and GH(q,q^2)'s
A matrix $H=[d_{ij}]$ is a generalized Hadamard matrix of order $uλ$ with entries from $U$ which is a finite group of order $u$ (for short $\mathrm{GH}(u,\,λ)$) such that whenever $i\neq \ell$ the set $\{d_{ij}d_{\ell j}^{-1}\,|\, 1\leq j\leq uλ\}$ contains each element of $U$ exactly $λ$ times. In this paper, we construct $\mathrm{GH}(q,\,q)$'s and $\mathrm{GH}(q,\,q^{2})$'s over additive groups of finite fields $\mathrm{GF}(q)$'s by using some sorts of functions.
