Gaussian width bounds with applications to arithmetic progressions in random settings
Published in Internat. Math. Res. Notices (2018) • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by problems on random differences in Szemerédi's theorem and on large deviations for arithmetic progressions in random sets, we prove upper bounds on the Gaussian width of point sets that are formed by the image of the $n$-dimensional Boolean hypercube under a mapping $ψ:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^k$, where each coordinate is a constant-degree multilinear polynomial with 0-1 coefficients. We show the following applications of our bounds. Let $[\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}]_p$ be the random subset of $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ containing each element independently with probability $p$. $\bullet$ A set $D\subseteq \mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is $\ell$-intersective if any dense subset of $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ contains a proper $(\ell+1)$-term arithmetic progression with common difference in $D$. Our main result implies that $[\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}]_p$ is $\ell$-intersective with probability $1 - o(1)$ provided $p \geq ω(N^{-β_\ell}\log N)$ for $β_\ell = (\lceil(\ell+1)/2\rceil)^{-1}$. This gives a polynomial improvement for all $\ell \ge 3$ of a previous bound due to Frantzikinakis, Lesigne and Wierdl, and reproves more directly the same improvement shown recently by the authors and Dvir. $\bullet$ Let $X_k$ be the number of $k$-term arithmetic progressions in $[\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}]_p$ and consider the large deviation rate $ρ_k(δ) = \log\Pr[X_k \geq (1+δ)\mathbb{E}X_k]$. We give quadratic improvements of the best-known range of $p$ for which a highly precise estimate of $ρ_k(δ)$ due to Bhattacharya, Ganguly, Shao and Zhao is valid for all odd $k \geq 5$. We also discuss connections with error correcting codes (locally decodable codes) and the Banach-space notion of type for injective tensor products of $\ell_p$-spaces.
Restricted power domination and zero forcing problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Power domination in graphs arises from the problem of monitoring an electric power system by placing as few measurement devices in the system as possible. A power dominating set of a graph is a set of vertices that observes every vertex in the graph, following a set of rules for power system monitoring. A practical problem of interest is to determine the minimum number of additional measurement devices needed to monitor a power network when the network is expanded and the existing devices remain in place. In this paper, we study the problem of finding the smallest power dominating set that contains a given set of vertices X. We also study the related problem of finding the smallest zero forcing set that contains a given set of vertices X. The sizes of such sets in a graph G are respectively called the restricted power domination number and restricted zero forcing number of G subject to X. We derive several tight bounds on the restricted power domination and zero forcing numbers of graphs, and relate them to other graph parameters. We also present exact and algorithmic results for computing the restricted power domination number, including integer programs for general graphs and a linear time algorithm for graphs with bounded treewidth. We also use restricted power domination to obtain a parallel algorithm for finding minimum power dominating sets in trees.

A Constructive Lower Bound on Szemerédi's Theorem
Let $r_k(n)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a set $A \subset \{1,2, \dots, n \}$ such that $A$ does not contain a $k$-term arithmetic progression. In this paper, we give a method of constructing such a set and prove the lower bound $n^{1-\frac{c_k}{k \ln k}} < r_k(n)$ where $k$ is prime, and $c_k \rightarrow 1$ as $k \rightarrow \infty$. This bound is the best known for an increasingly large interval of $n$ as we choose larger and larger $k$. We also demonstrate that one can prove or disprove a conjecture of Erdős on arithmetic progressions in large sets once tight enough bounds on $r_k(n)$ are obtained.
Long directed rainbow cycles and rainbow spanning trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subgraph of an edge-coloured graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colours. The problem of finding rainbow subgraphs goes back to the work of Euler on transversals in Latin squares and was extensively studied since then. In this paper we consider two related questions concerning rainbow subgraphs of complete, edge-coloured graphs and digraphs. In the first part, we show that every properly edge-coloured complete directed graph contains a directed rainbow cycle of length $n-O(n^{4/5})$. This is motivated by an old problem of Hahn and improves a result of Gyarfas and Sarkozy. In the second part, we show that any tree $T$ on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ_T\leq βn/\log n$ has a rainbow embedding into a properly edge-coloured $K_n$ provided that every colour appears at most $αn$ times and $α, β$ are sufficiently small constants.

polyDB: A Database for Polytopes and Related Objects
Published • View Publication • BIB
polyDB is a database for discrete geometric objects. The database is accessible via web and an interface from the software package polymake. It contains various datasets from the area of lattice polytopes, combinatorial polytopes, matroids and tropical geometry. In this short note we introduce the structure of the database and explain its use with a computation of the free sums and certain skew bipyramids among the class of smooth Fano polytopes in dimension up to 8.

$\left( n , k , k - 1 \right)$-Steiner Systems in Random Hypergraphs
Let $H$ be a random $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph where every $k$-tuple belongs to $H$ independently with probability $p$. We show that for some $\varepsilon_k > 0$, if $p \geq n^{-\varepsilon_k}$, then asymptotically almost surely $H$ contains an $\left( n , k , k - 1 \right)$-Steiner System. Our main tool is Keevash's method of Randomized Algebraic Constructions.

Extremal Theta-free planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal{F}$, a graph is $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. We study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230], that is, how many edges can an $\mathcal{F}$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices have? We define $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free planar graph on $n $ vertices. Dowden obtained the tight bounds $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_4)\leq15(n-2)/7$ for all $n\geq4$ and $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_5)\leq(12n-33)/5$ for all $n\geq11$. In this paper, we continue to promote the idea of determining $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ for certain classes $\mathcal{F}$. Let $Θ_k$ denote the family of Theta graphs on $k\ge4$ vertices, that is, graphs obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by adding an additional edge joining two non-consecutive vertices. The study of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_4)$ was suggested by Dowden. We show that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_4)\leq12(n-2)/5$ for all $n\geq 4$, $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_5)\leq5(n-2)/2$ for all $n\ge5$, and then demonstrate that these bounds are tight, in the sense that there are infinitely many values of $n$ for which they are attained exactly. We also prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6)\le ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\le 18(n-2)/7$ for all $n\ge6$.

Johnson's bijections and their application to counting simultaneous core partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Johnson recently proved Armstrong's conjecture which states that the average size of an $(a,b)$-core partition is $(a+b+1)(a-1)(b-1)/24$. He used various coordinate changes and one-to-one correspondences that are useful for counting problems about simultaneous core partitions. We give an expression for the number of $(b_1,b_2,\cdots, b_n)$-core partitions where $\{b_1,b_2,\cdots,b_n\}$ contains at least one pair of relatively prime numbers. We also evaluate the largest size of a self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partition.

Classes of graphs without star forests and related graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work provides a structural characterisation of hereditary graph classes that do not contain a star forest, several graphs obtained from star forests by subset complementation, a union of cliques, and the complement of a union of cliques as induced subgraphs. This provides, for instance, structural results for graph classes not containing a matching and several complements of a matching. In terms of the speed of hereditary graph classes, our results imply that all such classes have at most factorial speed of growth.

Rainbow saturation and graph capacities
The $t$-colored rainbow saturation number $rsat_t(n,F)$ is the minimum size of a $t$-edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices that contains no rainbow copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in any color creates such a rainbow copy. Barrus, Ferrara, Vandenbussche and Wenger conjectured that $rsat_t(n,K_s) = Θ(n\log n)$ for every $s\ge 3$ and $t\ge \binom{s}{2}$. In this short note we prove the conjecture in a strong sense, asymptotically determining the rainbow saturation number for triangles. Our lower bound is probabilistic in spirit, the upper bound is based on the Shannon capacity of a certain family of cliques.

On graphs of bounded semilattices
Published in Math Notes 107, 264--273 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce the graph $G(S)$ of a bounded semilattice $S$, which is a generalization of the intersection graph of the substructures of an algebraic structure. We prove some general theorems about these graphs; as an example, we show that if $S$ is a product of three or more chains, then $G(S)$ is Eulerian if and only if either the length of every chain is even or all the chains are of length one. We also show that if $G(S)$ contains a cycle, then $girth(G(S)) = 3$. Finally, we show that if $(S,+,\cdot,0,1)$ is a dually atomic bounded distributive lattice whose set of dual atoms is nonempty, and the graph $G(S)$ of $S$ has no isolated vertex, then $G(S)$ is connected with $diam(G(S))\leq 4$.

Directed path-decompositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many of the tools developed for the theory of tree-decompositions of graphs do not work for directed graphs. In this paper we show that some of the most basic tools do work in the case where the model digraph is a directed path. Using these tools we define a notion of a directed blockage in a digraph and prove a min-max theorem for directed path-width analogous to the result of Bienstock, Roberston, Seymour and Thomas for blockages in graphs. Furthermore, we show that every digraph with directed path width $\geq k$ contains each arboresence of order $\leq k + 1$ as a butterfly minor. Finally we also show that every digraph admits a linked directed path-decomposition of minimum width, extending a result of Kim and Seymour on semi-complete digraphs.

The multiset dimension of graphs
We introduce a variation of metric dimension, called the multiset dimension. The representation multiset of a vertex $v$ with respect to $W$ (which is a subset of the vertex set of a graph $G$), $r_m (v|W)$, is defined as a multiset of distances between $v$ and the vertices in $W$. If $r_m (u |W) \neq r_m(v|W)$ for every pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, then $W$ is called an m-resolving set of $G$. If $G$ has an m-resolving set, then the cardinality of a smallest m-resolving set is called the multiset dimension of $G$, denoted by $md(G)$. If $G$ does not contain an m-resolving set, we write $md(G) = \infty$. In this paper we present basic results on the multiset dimension. We obtain some (sharp) bounds for multiset dimension of arbitrary graphs in term of its metric dimension, order, or diameter. We provide some necessary conditions for a graph to have finite multiset dimension, with an example of an infinite family of graphs where those necessary conditions are also sufficient. We also show that the multiset dimension of any graph other than a path is at least $3$ and finally we provide two families of graphs having the multiset dimension $3$.
Two extensions of the Erdős-Szekeres problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
According to Suk's breakthrough result on the Erdos-Szekeres problem, any point set in general position in the plane, which has no $n$ elements that form the vertex set of a convex $n$-gon, has at most $2^{n+O\left({n^{2/3}\log n}\right)}$ points. We strengthen this theorem in two ways. First, we show that the result generalizes to convexity structures induced by pseudoline arrangements. Second, we improve the error term. A family of $n$ convex bodies in the plane is said to be in convex position if the convex hull of the union of no $n-1$ of its members contains the remaining one. If any three members are in convex position, we say that the family is in general position. Combining our results with a theorem of Dobbins, Holmsen, and Hubard, we significantly improve the best known upper bounds on the following two functions, introduced by Bisztriczky and Fejes Toth and by Pach and Toth, respectively. Let $c(n)$ (and $c'(n)$) denote the smallest positive integer $N$ with the property that any family of $N$ pairwise disjoint convex bodies in general position (resp., $N$ convex bodies in general position, any pair of which share at most two boundary points) has an $n$-membered subfamily in convex position. We show that $c(n)\le c'(n)\leq 2^{n+O\left(\sqrt{n\log n}\right)}$.

Immersion of transitive tournaments in digraphs with large minimum outdegree

We prove the existence of a function $h(k)$ such that every simple digraph with minimum outdegree greater than $h(k)$ contains an immersion of the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. This solves a conjecture of Devos, McDonald, Mohar and Scheide.

Abelian Schur groups of odd order
Published in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, 15 (2018) 397-411 • View Publication • BIB
A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group if any Schur ring over $G$ is associated in a natural way with a subgroup of $Sym(G)$ that contains all right translations. It is proved that the group $C_3\times C_3\times C_p$ is Schur for any prime $p$. Together with earlier results, this completes a classification of the abelian Schur groups of odd order.
$k$-Foldability of Words

We extend results regarding a combinatorial model introduced by Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko (2017+) which generalizes the folding of the RNA molecule in biology. Consider a word on alphabet $\{A_1, \overline{A}_1, \ldots, A_m, \overline{A}_m\}$ in which $\overline{A}_i$ is called the complement of $A_i$. A word $w$ is foldable if can be wrapped around a rooted plane tree $T$, starting at the root and working counterclockwise such that one letter labels each half edge and the two letters labeling the same edge are complements. The tree $T$ is called $w$-valid. We define a bijection between edge-colored plane trees and words folded onto trees. This bijection is used to characterize and enumerate words for which there is only one valid tree. We follow up with a characterization of words for which there exist exactly two valid trees. In addition, we examine the set $\mathcal{R}(n,m)$ consisting of all integers $k$ for which there exists a word of length $2n$ with exactly $k$ valid trees. Black, Drellich, and Tymoczko showed that for the $n$th Catalan number $C_n$, $\{C_n,C_{n-1}\}\subset \mathcal{R}(n,1)$ but $k\not\in\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ for $C_{n-1}<k<C_n$. We describe a superset of $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ in terms of the Catalan numbers by which we establish more missing intervals. We also prove $\mathcal{R}(n,1)$ contains all non-negative integer less than $n+1$.

Improved Bounds for Testing Forbidden Order Patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sequence $f\colon\{1,\dots,n\}\to\mathbb{R}$ contains a permutation $π$ of length $k$ if there exist $i_1<\dots<i_k$ such that, for all $x,y$, $f(i_x)<f(i_y)$ if and only if $π(x)<π(y)$; otherwise, $f$ is said to be $π$-free. In this work, we consider the problem of testing for $π$-freeness with one-sided error, continuing the investigation of [Newman et al., SODA'17]. We demonstrate a surprising behavior for non-adaptive tests with one-sided error: While a trivial sampling-based approach yields an $\varepsilon$-test for $π$-freeness making $Θ(\varepsilon^{-1/k} n^{1-1/k})$ queries, our lower bounds imply that this is almost optimal for most permutations! Specifically, for most permutations $π$ of length $k$, any non-adaptive one-sided $\varepsilon$-test requires $\varepsilon^{-1/(k-Θ(1))}n^{1-1/(k-Θ(1))}$ queries; furthermore, the permutations that are hardest to test require $Θ(\varepsilon^{-1/(k-1)}n^{1-1/(k-1)})$ queries, which is tight in $n$ and $\varepsilon$. Additionally, we show two hierarchical behaviors here. First, for any $k$ and $l\leq k-1$, there exists some $π$ of length $k$ that requires $\tildeΘ_{\varepsilon}(n^{1-1/l})$ non-adaptive queries. Second, we show an adaptivity hierarchy for $π=(1,3,2)$ by proving upper and lower bounds for (one- and two-sided) testing of $π$-freeness with $r$ rounds of adaptivity. The results answer open questions of Newman et al. and [Canonne and Gur, CCC'17].
Forbidding rank-preserving copies of a poset

The maximum size, $La(n,P)$, of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a copy of $P$ as a subposet, has been intensively studied. Let $P$ be a graded poset. We say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains a \emph{rank-preserving} copy of $P$ if it contains a copy of $P$ such that elements of $P$ having the same rank are mapped to sets of same size in $\mathcal{F}$. The largest size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a rank-preserving copy of $P$ as a subposet is denoted by $La_{rp}(n,P)$. Clearly, $La(n,P) \le La_{rp}(n,P)$ holds. In this paper we prove asymptotically optimal upper bounds on $La_{rp}(n,P)$ for tree posets of height $2$ and monotone tree posets of height $3$, strengthening a result of Bukh in these cases. We also obtain the exact value of $La_{rp}(n,\{Y_{h,s},Y_{h,s}'\})$ and $La(n,\{Y_{h,s},Y_{h,s}'\})$, where $Y_{h,s}$ denotes the poset on $h+s$ elements $x_1,\dots,x_h,y_1,\dots,y_s$ with $x_1<\dots<x_h<y_1,\dots,y_s$ and $Y'_{h,s}$ denotes the dual poset of $Y_{h,s}$.

Chromatic numbers of stable Kneser hypergraphs via topological Tverberg-type theorems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of all of these results. Moreover, we prove additional strengthenings by determining the chromatic number of certain sparse stable Kneser hypergraphs, and further develop a general approach to establishing lower bounds for chromatic numbers of hypergraphs using a combination of methods from equivariant topology and intersection results for convex hulls of points in Euclidean space.
