Coloring and density theorems for configurations of a given volume
This is a treatise on finite point configurations spanning a fixed volume to be found in a single color-class of an arbitrary finite (measurable) coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, or in a single large measurable subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$. More specifically, we study vertex-sets of simplices, rectangular boxes, and parallelotopes, attempting to make progress on several open problems posed in the 1970s and the 1980s. As one of the highlights, we give a negative answer to a question of Erdős and Graham, by coloring the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ in $25$ colors without creating monochromatic rectangles of unit area. More generally, we construct a finite coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that no color-class contains the $2^m$ vertices of any (possibly rotated) $m$-dimensional rectangular box of volume $1$. A positive result is still possible if rectangular boxes of merely sufficiently large volumes are sought in a single color-class of a finite measurable coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and we establish it under an additional assumption $n\geq m+1$. Also, motivated by a question of Graham on reasonable bounds in his result on monochromatic axes-aligned right-angled $m$-dimensional simplices, we establish its measurable coloring and density variants with polylogarithmic bounds, again in dimensions $n\geq m+1$. Next, we generalize a result of Erdős and Mauldin, by constructing an infinite measure set $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ such that every $n$-parallelotope with vertices in $A$ has volume strictly smaller than $1$. Finally, some results complementing the literature on isometric embeddings of hypercube graphs and on the hyperbolic analogue of the Hadwiger-Nelson problem also follow as byproducts of our approaches.

On generalized Turán problems with bounded matching number
Given a graph $H$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graphs that do not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Recently there has been interest in studying the case $\mathcal{F}=\{F,M_{s+1}\}$ for arbitrary $F$ and $H=K_r$. We extend these investigations to the case $H$ is arbitrary as well.

Maker-Breaker Rado games for equations with radicals
Published in Integers 2024 • Search Publication
We study two-player positional games where Maker and Breaker take turns to select a previously unoccupied number in $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Maker wins if the numbers selected by Maker contain a solution to the equation \[ x_1^{1/\ell}+\cdots+x_k^{1/\ell}=y^{1/\ell} \] where $k$ and $\ell$ are integers with $k\geq2$ and $\ell\neq0$, and Breaker wins if they can stop Maker. Let $f(k,\ell)$ be the smallest positive integer $n$ such that Maker has a winning strategy when $x_1,\ldots,x_k$ are not necessarily distinct, and let $f^*(k,\ell)$ be the smallest positive integer $n$ such that Maker has a winning strategy when $x_1,\ldots,x_k$ are distinct. When $\ell\geq1$, we prove that, for all $k\geq2$, $f(k,\ell)=(k+2)^\ell$ and $f^*(k,\ell)=(k^2+3)^\ell$; when $\ell\leq-1$, we prove that $f(k,\ell)=[k+Θ_k(1)]^{-\ell}$ and $f^*(k,\ell)=[\exp(O_k(k\log k))]^{-\ell}$. Our proofs use elementary combinatorial arguments as well as results from number theory and arithmetic Ramsey theory.

Sufficient conditions for fractional [a,b]-deleted graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $a$ and $b$ be two positive integers with $a\leq b$, and let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. Let $h:E(G)\rightarrow[0,1]$ be a function. If $a\leq\sum\limits_{e\in E_G(v)}{h(e)}\leq b$ holds for every $v\in V(G)$, then the subgraph of $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $F_h$, denoted by $G[F_h]$, is called a fractional $[a,b]$-factor of $G$ with indicator function $h$, where $E_G(v)$ denotes the set of edges incident with $v$ in $G$ and $F_h=\{e\in E(G):h(e)>0\}$. A graph $G$ is defined as a fractional $[a,b]$-deleted graph if for any $e\in E(G)$, $G-e$ contains a fractional $[a,b]$-factor. The size, spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius of $G$ are denoted by $e(G)$, $ρ(G)$ and $q(G)$, respectively. In this paper, we establish a lower bound on the size, spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius of a graph $G$ to guarantee that $G$ is a fractional $[a,b]$-deleted graph.

Gallai-Ramsey multiplicity for rainbow small trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G, H$ be two non-empty graphs and $k$ be a positive integer. The Gallai-Ramsey number $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum positive integer $N$ such that for all $n\geq N$, every $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow subgraph $G$ or a monochromatic subgraph $H$. The Gallai-Ramsey multiplicity $\operatorname{GM}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum total number of rainbow subgraphs $G$ and monochromatic subgraphs $H$ for all $k$-edge-colored $K_{\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)}$. In this paper, we get some exact values of the Gallai-Ramsey multiplicity for rainbow small trees versus general monochromatic graphs under a sufficiently large number of colors. We also study the bipartite Gallai-Ramsey multiplicity.
On the maximum second eigenvalue of outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed positive integer $k$ and a graph $G$, let $λ_k(G)$ denote the $k$-th largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In 2017, Tait and Tobin proved that the maximum $λ_1(G)$ among all outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices is achieved by the fan graph $K_1\vee P_{n-1}$. In this paper, we consider a similar problem of determining the maximum $λ_2$ among all connected outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices. For $n$ even and sufficiently large, we prove that the maximum $λ_2$ is uniquely achieved by the graph $(K_1\vee P_{n/2-1})\!\!-\!\!(K_1\vee P_{n/2-1})$, which is obtained by connecting two disjoint copies of $(K_1\vee P_{n/2-1})$ through a new edge joining their smallest degree vertices. When $n$ is odd and sufficiently large, the extremal graphs are not unique. The extremal graphs are those graphs $G$ that contain a cut vertex $u$ such that $G\setminus \{u\}$ is isomorphic to $2(K_1\vee P_{n/2-1})$. We also determine the maximum $λ_2$ among all 2-connected outerplanar graphs and asymptotically determine the maximum of $λ_k(G)$ among all connected outerplanar graphs for any fixed $k$.
Large Convex sets in Difference sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a construction of a convex set $A \subset \mathbb R$ with cardinality $n$ such that $A-A$ contains a convex subset with cardinality $Ω(n^2)$. We also consider the following variant of this problem: given a convex set $A$, what is the size of the largest matching $M \subset A \times A$ such that the set \[ \{ a-b : (a,b) \in M \} \] is convex? We prove that there always exists such an $M$ with $|M| \geq \sqrt n$, and that this lower bound is best possible, up a multiplicative constant.
On faces of the Kunz cone and the numerical semigroups within them
A numerical semigroup is a cofinite subset of the non-negative integers that is closed under addition and contains 0. Each numerical semigroup $S$ with fixed smallest positive element $m$ corresponds to an integer point in a rational polyhedral cone $\mathcal C_m$, called the Kunz cone. Moreover, numerical semigroups corresponding to points in the same face $F \subseteq \mathcal C_m$ are known to share many properties, such as the number of minimal generators. In this work, we classify which faces of $\mathcal C_m$ contain points corresponding to numerical semigroups. Additionally, we obtain sharp bounds on the number of minimal generators of $S$ in terms of the dimension of the face of $\mathcal C_m$ containing the point corresponding to $S$.

Lower bounds on the homology of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide novel lower bounds on the Betti numbers of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs of all dimensions, and at all scales. In more detail, let $Q_n$ be the vertex set of $2^n$ vertices in the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph, equipped with the shortest path metric. Let $VR(Q_n;r)$ be its Vietoris--Rips complex at scale parameter $r \ge 0$, which has $Q_n$ as its vertex set, and all subsets of diameter at most $r$ as its simplices. For integers $r<r'$ the inclusion $VR(Q_n;r)\hookrightarrow VR(Q_n;r')$ is nullhomotopic, meaning no persistent homology bars have length longer than one, and we therefore focus attention on the individual spaces $VR(Q_n;r)$. We provide lower bounds on the ranks of homology groups of $VR(Q_n;r)$. For example, using cross-polytopal generators, we prove that the rank of $H_{2^r-1}(VR(Q_n;r))$ is at least $2^{n-(r+1)}\binom{n}{r+1}$. We also prove a version of \emph{homology propagation}: if $q\ge 1$ and if $p$ is the smallest integer for which $rank H_q(VR(Q_p;r))\neq 0$, then $rank H_q(VR(Q_n;r)) \ge \sum_{i=p}^n 2^{i-p} \binom{i-1}{p-1} \cdot rank H_q(VR(Q_p;r))$ for all $n \ge p$. When $r\le 3$, this result and variants thereof provide tight lower bounds on the rank of $H_q(VR(Q_n;r))$ for all $n$, and for each $r \ge 4$ we produce novel lower bounds on the ranks of homology groups. Furthermore, we show that for each $r\ge 2$, the homology groups of $VR(Q_n;r)$ for $n \ge 2r+1$ contain propagated homology not induced by the initial cross-polytopal generators.
The number of $1$-nearly independent vertex subsets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A subset $I$ of $V(G)$ is an independent vertex subset if no two vertices in $I$ are adjacent in $G$. We study the number, $σ_1(G)$, of all subsets of $v(G)$ that contain exactly one pair of adjacent vertices. We call those subsets 1-nearly independent vertex subsets. Recursive formulas of $σ_1$ are provided, as well as some cases of explicit formulas. We prove a tight lower (resp. upper) bound on $σ_1$ for graphs of order $n$. We deduce as a corollary that the star $K_{1,n-1}$ (the tree with degree sequence $(n-1,1,\dots,1)$) is the $n$-vertex tree with smallest $σ_1$, while it is well known that $K_{1,n-1}$ is the $n$-vertex tree with largest number of independent subsets.

Universality for graphs of bounded degeneracy
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is called $\mathcal{H}$-universal if $G$ contains every graph of $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. Following the extensive research on universal graphs of small size for bounded-degree graphs, Alon asked what is the minimum number of edges that a graph must have to be universal for the class of all $n$-vertex graphs that are $D$-degenerate. In this paper, we answer this question up to a factor that is polylogarithmic in $n.$
Right-angled Artin groups and the cohomology basis graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis $\mathcal B$ of $H^1(A(Γ),\mathbb F)$ over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ from the cup product, called the \emph{cohomology basis graph}. We show that $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ always contains $Γ$ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph $Γ$ from the cohomology of $A(Γ)$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of $A(Γ)$, and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behavior of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors, and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.

Distribution of colours in rainbow H-free colourings
An edge colouring of $K_n$ with $k$ colours is a Gallai $k$-colouring if it does not contain any rainbow triangle. Gyárfás, Pálvölgyi, Patkós and Wales proved that there exists a number $g(k)$ such that $n\geq g(k)$ if and only if for any colour distribution sequence $(e_1,\cdots,e_k)$ with $\sum_{i=1}^ke_i=\binom{n}{2}$, there exist a Gallai $k$-colouring of $K_n$ with $e_i$ edges having colour $i$. They also showed that $Ω(k)=g(k)=O(k^2)$ and posed the problem of determining the exact order of magnitude of $g(k)$. Feffer, Fu and Yan improved both bounds significantly by proving $Ω(k^{1.5}/\log k)=g(k)=O(k^{1.5})$. We resolve this problem by showing $g(k)=Θ(k^{1.5}/(\log k)^{0.5})$. Moreover, we generalise these definitions by considering rainbow $H$-free colourings of $K_n$ for any general graph $H$, and the natural corresponding quantity $g(H,k)$. We prove that $g(H,k)$ is finite for every $k$ if and only if $H$ is not a forest, and determine the order of $g(H,k)$ when $H$ contains a subgraph with minimum degree at least 3.
Ergodic averages for sparse sequences along primes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

Numerical characterization of the hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the numerical characterization of two dimensional hard Lefschetz classes given by the complete intersections of nef classes. In Shenfeld and van Handel's breakthrough work on the characterization of the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes, they proposed an open question on the algebraic analogue of the characterization. By taking further inspiration from our previous work with Shang on hard Lefschetz theorems for free line bundles, we formulate and refine the conjectural picture more precisely and settle the open question when the collection of nef classes is given by a rearrangement of supercriticality, which in particular includes the big nef collection as a special case. The main results enable us to refine some previous results and study the extremals of Hodge index inequality, and more importantly provide the first series of examples of hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two both in algebraic geometry and analytic geometry, in which one can allow nontrivial augmented base locus and thus drop the semi-ampleness or semi-positivity assumption. As a key ingredient of the numerical characterization, we establish a local Hodge index inequality for Lorentzian polynomials, which is the algebraic analogue of the local Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality obtained by Shenfeld-van Handel for convex polytopes. This result holds in broad contexts, e.g., it holds on a smooth projective variety, on a compact Kähler manifold and on a Lorentzian fan, which contains the Bergman fan of a matroid or polymatroid as a typical example.

A shorter proof of the path-width theorem
A graph has {\em path-width} at most $w$ if it can be built from a sequence of graphs each with at most $w+1$ vertices, by overlapping consecutive terms. Every graph with path-width at least $w-1$ contains every $w$-vertex forest as a minor: this was originally proved by Bienstock, Robertson, Thomas and the author, and was given a short proof by Diestel. Here we give a proof even shorter and simpler than that of Diestel.

Universal Plücker coordinates for the Wronski map and positivity in real Schubert calculus
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a $d$-dimensional vector space $V \subset \mathbb{C}[u]$ of polynomials, its Wronskian is the polynomial $(u + z_1) \cdots (u + z_n)$ whose zeros $-z_i$ are the points of $\mathbb{C}$ such that $V$ contains a nonzero polynomial with a zero of order at least $d$ at $-z_i$. Equivalently, $V$ is a solution to the Schubert problem defined by osculating planes to the moment curve at $z_1, \dots, z_n$. The inverse Wronski problem involves finding all $V$ with a given Wronskian $(u + z_1) \cdots (u + z_n)$. We solve this problem by providing explicit formulas for the Grassmann-Plücker coordinates of the general solution $V$, as commuting operators in the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ of the symmetric group. The Plücker coordinates of individual solutions over $\mathbb{C}$ are obtained by restricting to an eigenspace and replacing each operator by its eigenvalue. This generalizes work of Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko (2013) and of Purbhoo (2022), which give formulas in $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ for the differential equation satisfied by $V$. Moreover, if $z_1, \dots, z_n$ are real and nonnegative, then our operators are positive semidefinite, implying that the Plücker coordinates of $V$ are all real and nonnegative. This verifies several outstanding conjectures in real Schubert calculus, including the positivity conjectures of Mukhin and Tarasov (2017) and of Karp (2021), the disconjugacy conjecture of Eremenko (2015), and the divisor form of the secant conjecture of Sottile (2003). The proofs involve the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, symmetric functions, and $τ$-functions of the KP hierarchy.

A Sharp Ramsey Theorem for Ordered Hypergraph Matchings
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2025:6, 18pp • View Publication • BIB
We prove essentially sharp bounds for Ramsey numbers of ordered hypergraph matchings, inroduced recently by Dudek, Grytczuk, and Ruciński. Namely, for any $r \ge 2$ and $n \ge 2$, we show that any collection $\mathcal H$ of $n$ pairwise disjoint subsets in $\mathbb Z$ of size $r$ contains a subcollection of size $\lfloor n^{1/(2^r-1)}/2\rfloor$ in which every pair of sets are in the same relative position with respect to the linear ordering on $\mathbb Z$. This improves previous bounds of Dudek-Grytczuk-Ruciński and of Anastos-Jin-Kwan-Sudakov and is sharp up to a factor of $2$. For large $r$, we even obtain such a subcollection of size $\lfloor (1-o(1))\cdot n^{1/(2^r-1)}\rfloor$, which is asymptotically tight (here, the $o(1)$-term tends to zero as $r \to \infty$, regardless of the value of $n$). Furthermore, we prove a multiparameter extension of this result where one wants to find a clique of prescribed size $m_P$ for each relative position pattern $P$. Our bound is sharp for all choices of parameters $m_P$, up to a constant factor depending on $r$ only. This answers questions of Anastos-Jin-Kwan-Sudakov and of Dudek-Grytczuk-Ruciński.

Almost partitioning every $2$-edge-coloured complete $k$-graph into $k$ monochromatic tight cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-graph with a cyclic order of its vertices such that every $k$ consecutive vertices from an edge. We show that for $k\geq 3$, every red-blue edge-coloured complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices contains $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic tight cycles that together cover $n - o(n)$ vertices.
Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions XI. Local structure in even-hole-free graphs of large treewidth
We prove a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon that every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains a four-vertex induced subgraph with at least five edges (that is, either the four-vertex complete graph or the unique four-vertex graph with five edges, also known as the diamond). In fact, we prove two stronger results: (a) For every $K_4$-free chordal graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains either a four-vertex complete subgraph or an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ (when $H$ is the diamond, this yields their conjecture); and (b) For every $K_3$-free chordal graph $H$ (equivalently, for every forest $H$) and every $t \in \mathbb{N}$, every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains either a $t$-vertex complete subgraph or an induced subgraph obtained from $H$ by adding a universal vertex (when $t=4$ and $H$ is the three-vertex path, this yields their conjecture). The choice of $H$ in both result is best possible: (a) fails for every graph $H$ that is not $K_4$-free and chordal, and (b) fails for every graph $H$ that is not a forest.
