On the ubiquity of oriented double rays
Published • View Publication • BIB
A digraph $H$ is called ubiquitous if every digraph that contains arbitrarily many vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ also contains infinitely many vertex-disjoint copies of $H$. We study oriented double rays, that is, digraphs $H$ whose underlying undirected graphs are double rays. Calling a vertex of an oriented double ray a turn if it has in-degree or out-degree 2, we prove that an oriented double ray with at least one turn is ubiquitous if and only if it has a (finite) odd number of turns. It remains an open problem to determine whether the consistently oriented double ray is ubiquitous.

On convex equations
We prove that every subset of $\{1,\dots, N\}$ which does not contain any solutions to the equation $x+y+z=3w$ has at most $\exp(-c(\log N)^{1/5+o(1)})N$ elements, for some $c>0$. This theorem improves upon previous estimates. Additionally, our method has the potential to yield an optimal estimate for this problem that matches the known Behrend's lower estimate. Our approach relies on a new result on almost-periodicity of convolutions.
What is a 4-connected matroid?
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 32 (2025), P2.1 • View Publication • BIB
The {\em breadth} of a tangle $\mathcal{T}$ in a matroid is the size of the largest spanning uniform submatroid of the tangle matroid of $\mathcal{T}$. A matroid $M$ is {\em weakly $4$-connected} if it is 3-connected and whenever $(X,Y)$ is a partition of $E(M)$ with $|X|,|Y|>4$, then $λ(X)\geq 3$. We prove that if $\mathcal{T}$ is a tangle of order $k\geq 4$ and breadth $l$ in a matroid $M$, then $M$ has a weakly 4-connected minor $N$ with a tangle $\mathcal{T}$ of order $k$, breadth $l$ and has the property that $\mathcal{T}$ is the tangle in $M$ induced by $\mathcal{T}_N$. A set $Z$ of elements of a matroid $M$ is $4$-{\em connected} if $λ(A)\geq\min\{|A\cap Z|,|Z-A|,3\}$ for all $A\subseteq E(M)$. As a corollary of our theorems on tangles we prove that if $M$ contains an $n$-element $4$-connected set where $n\geq 7$, then $M$ has a weakly $4$-connected minor that contains an $n$-element $4$-connected set.

Isolation of squares in graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 347 (2024), article number 114161 • View Publication • BIB
Given a set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, we call a copy of a graph in $\mathcal{F}$ an $\mathcal{F}$-graph. The $\mathcal{F}$-isolation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $ι(G,\mathcal{F})$, is the size of a smallest subset $D$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ such that the closed neighbourhood of $D$ intersects the vertex sets of the $\mathcal{F}$-graphs contained by $G$ (equivalently, $G - N[D]$ contains no $\mathcal{F}$-graph). Thus, $ι(G,\{K_1\})$ is the domination number of $G$. The second author showed that if $\mathcal{F}$ is the set of cycles and $G$ is a connected $n$-vertex graph that is not a triangle, then $ι(G,\mathcal{F}) \leq \left \lfloor \frac{n}{4} \right \rfloor$. This bound is attainable for every $n$ and solved a problem of Caro and Hansberg. A question that arises immediately is how much smaller an upper bound can be if $\mathcal{F} = \{C_k\}$ for some $k \geq 3$, where $C_k$ is a cycle of length $k$. The problem is to determine the smallest real number $c_k$ (if it exists) such that for some finite set $\mathcal{E}_k$ of graphs, $ι(G, \{C_k\}) \leq c_k |V(G)|$ for every connected graph $G$ that is not an $\mathcal{E}_k$-graph. The above-mentioned result yields $c_3 = \frac{1}{4}$ and $\mathcal{E}_3 = \{C_3\}$. The second author also showed that if $k \geq 5$ and $c_k$ exists, then $c_k \geq \frac{2}{2k + 1}$. We prove that $c_4 = \frac{1}{5}$ and determine $\mathcal{E}_4$, which consists of three $4$-vertex graphs and six $9$-vertex graphs. The $9$-vertex graphs in $\mathcal{E}_4$ were fully determined by means of a computer program. A method that has the potential of yielding similar results is introduced.

Some exact and asymptotic results for hypergraph Turán problems in $\ell_2$-norm
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, the \emph{codegree squared sum} $\text{co}_2(\mathcal{H})$ is the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree vector of $\mathcal{H}$, and for a family $\mathscr{F}$ of $k$-uniform hypergraphs, the codegree squared extremal number $\text{exco}_2(n, \mathscr{F})$ is the maximum codegree squared sum of a hypergraph on $n$ vertices which does not contain any hypergraph in $\mathscr{F}$. Balogh, Clemen and Lidický recently introduced the codegree squared extremal number and determined it for a number of $3$-uniform hypergraphs, including the complete graphs $K_4^3$ and $K_5^3$. In this paper, we give a number of exact or asymptotic results for hypergraph Turán problems in the $\ell_2$-norm, including the first exact results for arbitrary $k$. Namely, we prove a version of the classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the codegree squared extremal number: if $\mathcal{F} \subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ is intersecting and $n\ge 2k$, then \[\text{co}_2(\mathcal{F}) \le \binom{n-1}{k-1}(1+(n-k+1)(k-1)),\] with equality only for the star for $n > 2k$. Our main tool is an inequality of Bey, which also gives a general upper bound on $\text{exco}_2(n, \mathscr{F})$. We also prove versions of the Erdős Matching Conjecture and the $t$-intersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the codegree squared extremal number for large $n$, determine the exact codegree squared extremal number of minimal and linear $3$-paths and $3$-cycles, and determine asymptotically the codegree squared extremal number of minimal and linear $s$-paths and $s$-cycles for $s\ge 4$. Lastly, we derive a number of exact or asymptotic results for graph Turán-type problems in the $\ell_2$-norm from spectral extremal results for certain fobridden subgraph problems and the well-known Hofmeister's inequality.

Transversals in a collections of trees
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a fixed family of graphs on vertex set $V$ and $\mathcal{G}$ be a collection of elements in $\mathcal{S}$. We investigated the transversal problem of finding the maximum value of $|\mathcal{G}|$ when $\mathcal{G}$ contains no rainbow elements in $\mathcal{S}$. Specifically, we determine the exact values when $\mathcal{S}$ is a family of stars or a family of trees of the same order $n$ with $n$ dividing $|V|$. Further, all the extremal cases for $\mathcal{G}$ are characterized.

Dense circuit graphs and the planar Turán number of a cycle
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k)$ is known for $k\le 7$. We show that dense planar graphs with a certain connectivity property (known as circuit graphs) contain large near triangulations, and we use this result to obtain consequences for planar Turán numbers. In particular, we prove that there is a constant $D$ so that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k) \le 3n - 6 - Dn/k^{\log_2^3}$ for all $k, n\ge 4$. When $k \ge 11$ this bound is tight up to the constant $D$ and proves a conjecture of Cranston, Lidický, Liu, and Shantanam.

Spherical sets avoiding orthonormal bases
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that there exists an absolute constant $c_0<1$ such that for all $n \ge 2$, any measurable set $A \subset S^{n-1}$ of density at least $c_0$ contains $n$ pairwise orthogonal vectors. The result is sharp up to the value of the constant $c_0$. Moreover, we show that for all $2\le k \le n$ a set $A$ avoiding $k$ pairwise orthogonal vectors has measure at most $\exp(-c_1 \min\{\sqrt{n}, n/k\})$ for some $c_1>0$. Proofs rely on the harmonic analysis on the sphere and the hypercontractive inequality.

On forbidding graphs as traces of hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a graph $H$ as a trace if there exists some set $S\subset V(\mathcal{H})$ such that $\mathcal{H}|_S=\{h\cap S: h\in E(\mathcal{H})\}$ contains a subhypergraph isomorphic to $H$. We study the largest number of hyperedges in 3-uniform hypergraphs avoiding some graph $F$ as trace. In particular, we improve a bound given by Luo and Spiro in the case $F=C_4$, and obtain exact bounds for large $n$ when $F$ is a book graph.
Graphs with no even holes and no sector wheels are the union of two chordal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Sivaraman conjectured that if $G$ is a graph with no induced even cycle then there exist sets $X_1, X_2 \subseteq V(G)$ satisfying $V(G) = X_1 \cup X_2$ such that the induced graphs $G[X_1]$ and $G[X_2]$ are both chordal. We prove this conjecture in the special case where $G$ contains no sector wheel, namely, a pair $(H, w)$ where $H$ is an induced cycle of $G$ and $w$ is a vertex in $V(G) \setminus V(H)$ such that $N(w) \cap H$ is either $V(H)$ or a path with at least three vertices.

Graphs with three and four distinct eigenvalues based on circulants
In this paper, we aim to address the open questions raised in various recent papers regarding characterization of circulant graphs with three or four distinct eigenvalues in their spectra. Our focus is on providing characterizations and constructing classes of graphs falling under this specific category. We present a characterization of circulant graphs with prime number order and unitary Cayley graphs with arbitrary order, both of which possess spectra displaying three or four distinct eigenvalues. Various constructions of circulant graphs with composite orders are provided whose spectra consist of four distinct eigenvalues. These constructions primarily utilize specific subgraphs of circulant graphs that already possess two or three eigenvalues in their spectra, employing graph operations like the tensor product, the union, and the complement. Finally, we characterize the iterated line graphs of unitary Cayley graphs whose spectra contain three or four distinct eigenvalues, and we show their non-circulant nature.
Properly colored even cycles in edge-colored complete balanced bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider a complete balanced bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ and let $K^c_{n,n}$ be an edge-colored version of $K_{n,n}$ that is obtained from $K_{n,n}$ by having each edge assigned a certain color. A subgraph $H$ of $K^c_{n,n}$ is called properly colored (PC) if every two adjacent edges of $H$ have distinct colors. $K_{n,n}^c$ is called properly vertex-even-pancyclic if for every vertex $u\in V(K_{n,n}^c)$ and for every even integer $k$ with $4 \leq k \leq 2n$, there exists a PC $k$-cycle containing $u$. The minimum color degree $δ^c(K^c_{n,n})$ of $K^c_{n,n}$ is the largest integer $k$ such that for every vertex $v$, there are at least $k$ distinct colors on the edges incident to $v$. In this paper we study the existence of PC even cycles in $K_{n,n}^c$. We first show that, for every integer $t\geq 3$, every $K^c_{n,n}$ with $δ^c(K^c_{n,n})\geq \frac{2n}{3}+t$ contains a PC 2-factor $H$ such that every cycle of $H$ has a length of at least $t$. By using the probabilistic method and absorbing technique, we use the above result to further show that, for every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists an integer $n_0(\varepsilon)$ such that every $K^c_{n,n}$ with $n\geq n_0(\varepsilon)$ is properly vertex-even-pancyclic, provided that $δ^c(K^c_{n,n})\geq (\frac{2}{3}+\varepsilon)n$.
A Polynomial Upper Bound for Poset Saturation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we say that a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ is $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturation number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we prove that the saturation number for any given poset grows at worst polynomially. More precisely, we show that $\text{sat}^*(n, \mathcal P)=O(n^c)$, where $c\leq|\mathcal{P}|^2/4+1$ is a constant depending on $\mathcal P$ only. We obtain this result by bounding the VC-dimension of our family.
Universality for transversal Hamilton cycles

Let $\mathbf{G}=\{G_1, \ldots, G_m\}$ be a graph collection on a common vertex set $V$ of size $n$ such that $δ(G_i) \geq (1+o(1))n/2$ for every $i \in [m]$. We show that $\mathbf{G}$ contains every Hamilton cycle pattern. That is, for every map $χ: [n] \to [m]$ there is a Hamilton cycle whose $i$-th edge lies in $G_{χ(i)}$.

Analysis and Algorithmic Construction of Self-Assembled DNA Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
DNA self-assembly is an important tool that has a wide range of applications such as building nanostructures, the transport of target virotherapies, and nano-circuitry. Tools from graph theory can be used to encode the biological process of DNA self-assembly. The principle component of this process is to examine collections of branched junction molecules, called pots, and study the types of structures that can be constructed. We restrict our attention to pots which contain one set of complementary cohesive-ends, i.e. a single bond-edge type, and we identify the types and sizes of structures that can be built from such a pot. In particular, we show a dependence between the order of graphs in the output of the pot and the number of arms on the corresponding tiles. Furthermore, we provide two algorithms which will construct complete complexes for a pot with a single bond-edge type.
Maximal line-free sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study subsets of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ that do not contain progressions of length $k$. We denote by $r_k(\mathbb{F}_p^n)$ the cardinality of such subsets containing a maximal number of elements. In this paper we focus on the case $k=p$ and therefore sets containing no full line. A~trivial lower bound $r_p(\mathbb{F}_p^n)\geq(p-1)^n$ is achieved by a hypercube of side length $p-1$ and it is known that equality holds for $n\in\{1,2\}$. We will however show that $r_p(\mathbb{F}_p^3)\geq (p-1)^3+p-2\sqrt{p}$, which is the first improvement in the three dimensional case that is increasing in $p$. We will also give the upper bound $r_p(\mathbb{F}_p^{3})\leq p^3-2p^2-(\sqrt{2}-1)p+2$ as well as generalizations for higher dimensions. Finally we present some bounds for individual $p$ and $n$, in particular $r_5(\mathbb{F}_5^{3})\geq 70$ and $r_7(\mathbb{F}_7^{3})\geq 225$ which can be used to give the asymptotic lower bound $4.121^n$ for $r_5(\mathbb{F}_5^{n})$ and $6.082^n$ for $r_7(\mathbb{F}_7^{n})$.

Apex Graphs and Cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A class $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs is called hereditary if it is closed under taking induced subgraphs. We denote by $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{apex}$ the class of graphs $G$ that contain a vertex $v$ such that $G-v$ is in $\mathcal{G}$. We prove that if a hereditary class $\mathcal{G}$ has finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then so does $\mathcal{G}^\mathrm{apex}$. The hereditary class of cographs consists of all graphs $G$ that can be generated from $K_1$ using complementation and disjoint union. A graph is an apex cograph if it contains a vertex whose deletion results in a cograph. Cographs are precisely the graphs that do not have the $4$-vertex path as an induced subgraph. Our main result finds all such forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of apex cographs.

Erdős-Hajnal problems for posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a poset $(Q,\le_{Q})$ contains an induced copy of a poset $(P,\le_P)$ if there is an injective function $φ\colon P\to Q$ such that for every two $X,Y\in P$,\;\;$X\le_P Y$ if and only if $φ(X)\le_Q φ(Y)$. We denote the Boolean lattice $(2^{[n]},\subseteq)$ by $Q_n$. Given a fixed $2$-coloring $c$ of a poset $P$, the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of this colored poset is the smallest integer $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ contains an induced copy of $P$ colored as in $c$, or a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. We present bounds on the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of general colored posets, antichains, chains, and small Boolean lattices. Let the poset Ramsey number $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ be the least $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of $Q_N$ contains a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. As a corollary, we show that $R(Q_n,Q_n)> 2.02n$, improving on the best known lower bound $2n+1$ by Cox and Stolee \cite{CS}.
The double Hall property and cycle covers in bipartite graphs
In a graph $G$, the $2$-neighborhood of a vertex set $X$ consists of all vertices of $G$ having at least $2$ neighbors in $X$. We say that a bipartite graph $G(A,B)$ satisfies the double Hall property if $|A|\geq2$, and every subset $X \subseteq A$ of size at least $2$ has a $2$-neighborhood of size at least $|X|$. Salia conjectured that any bipartite graph $G(A,B)$ satisfying the double Hall property contains a cycle covering $A$. Here, we prove the existence of a $2$-factor covering $A$ in any bipartite graph $G(A,B)$ satisfying the double Hall property. We also show Salia's conjecture for graphs with restricted degrees of vertices in $B$. Additionally, we prove a lower bound on the number of edges in a graph satisfying the double Hall property, and the bound is sharp up to a constant factor.

Universal slices of the category of graphs

We characterise the slices of the category of graphs that are algebraically universal in terms of the structure of the slicing graph. In particular, we show that algebraic universality is obtained if, and only if, the slicing graph contains one of four fixed graphs as a subgraph.
