Graph Complexity and Link Colorings
The (torsion) complexity of a finite signed graph is defined to be the order of the torsion subgroup of the abelian group presented by its Laplacian matrix. When $G$ is $d$-periodic (i.e., $G$ has a free ${\mathbb Z}^d$-action by graph automorphisms with finite quotient) the Mahler measure of its Laplacian polynomial is the growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of $G$. Any 1-periodic plane graph $G$ determines a link $\ell \cup C$ with unknotted component $C$. In this case the Laplacian polynomial of $G$ is related to the Alexander polynomial of the link. Lehmer's question, an open question about the roots of monic integral polynomials, is equivalent to a question about the complexity growth of signed 1-periodic graphs that are not necessarily embedded.

On the Equitable Choosability of the Disjoint Union of Stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
Equitable $k$-choosability is a list analogue of equitable $k$-coloring that was introduced by Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West in 2003. It is known that if vertex disjoint graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ are equitably $k$-choosable, the disjoint union of $G_1$ and $G_2$ may not be equitably $k$-choosable. Given any $m \in \mathbb{N}$ the values of $k$ for which $K_{1,m}$ is equitably $k$-choosable are known. Also, a complete characterization of equitably $2$-choosable graphs is not known. With these facts in mind, we study the equitable choosability of $\sum_{i=1}^n K_{1,m_i}$, the disjoint union of $n$ stars. We show that determining whether $\sum_{i=1}^n K_{1,m_i}$ is equitably choosable is NP-complete when the same list of two colors is assigned to every vertex. We completely determine when the disjoint union of two stars (or $n \geq 2$ identical stars) is equitably 2-choosable, and we present results on the equitable $k$-choosability of the disjoint union of two stars for arbitrary $k$.

Coloring bipartite graphs with semi-small list size
Published in Ann. Comb. 27 (2023), 469-491 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Alon, Cambie, and Kang introduced asymmetric list coloring of bipartite graphs, where the size of each vertex's list depends on its part. For complete bipartite graphs, we fix the list sizes of one part and consider the resulting asymptotics, revealing an invariant quantity instrumental in determining choosability across most of the parameter space. By connecting this quantity to a simple question on independent sets of hypergraphs, we strengthen bounds when a part has list size 2. Finally, we state via our framework a conjecture on general bipartite graphs, unifying three conjectures of Alon-Cambie-Kang.

Monochromatic triangle packings in red-blue graphs
We prove that in every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_n$ there is a collection of $n^2/12 + o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint monochromatic triangles, thus confirming a conjecture of Erdős. We also prove a corresponding stability result, showing that $2$-colourings that are close to attaining the aforementioned bound have a colour class which is close to bipartite. As part of our proof, we confirm a recent conjecture of Tyomkyn about the fractional version of this problem.

$3$-Colouring $P_t$-free graphs without short odd cycles
For any odd $t\ge 9$, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that solves the $3$-colouring problem, and finds a $3$-colouring if one exists, in $P_{t}$-free graphs of odd girth at least $t-2$. In particular, our algorithm works for $(P_9, C_3, C_5)$-free graphs, thus making progress towards determining the complexity of $3$-colouring in $P_t$-free graphs, which is open for $t\ge 8$.

An Improved Bound for the Linear Arboricity Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1980, Akiyama, Exoo and Harary posited the Linear Arboricity Conjecture which states that any graph $G$ of maximum degree $Δ$ can be decomposed into at most $\left\lceil \fracΔ{2}\right\rceil$ linear forests. (A forest is linear if all of its components are paths.) In 1988, Alon proved the conjecture holds asymptotically. The current best bound is due to Ferber, Fox and Jain from 2020 who showed that $\fracΔ{2}+ O(Δ^{.661})$ suffices for large enough $Δ$. Here, we show that $G$ admits a decomposition into at most $\fracΔ{2}+ 3\sqrtΔ \log^4 Δ$ linear forests provided $Δ$ is large enough. Moreover, our result also holds in the more general list setting, where edges have (possibly different) sets of permissible linear forests. Thus our bound also holds for the List Linear Arboricity Conjecture which was only recently shown to hold asymptotically by Kim and the second author. Indeed, our proof method ties together the Linear Arboricity Conjecture and the well-known List Colouring Conjecture; consequently, our error term for the Linear Arboricity Conjecture matches the best known error-term for the List Colouring Conjecture due to Molloy and Reed from 2000. This follows as we make two copies of every colour and then seek a proper edge colouring where we avoid bicoloured cycles between a colour and its copy; we achieve this via a clever modification of the nibble method.

Chain method for panchromatic colorings of hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We deal with an extremal problem concerning panchromatic colorings of hypergraphs. A vertex $r$-coloring of a hypergraph $H$ is \emph{panchromatic} if every edge meets every color. We prove that for every $3<r\leq\sqrt[3]{n/(100\ln n)}$, every $n$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $|E(H)|\leq \frac{1}{20r^2}\left(\frac{n}{\ln n}\right)^{\frac {r-1}{r}}\left(\frac{r}{r-1}\right)^{n-1}$ has a panchromatic coloring with $r$ colors.

(k; l)-Colourings and Ferrers Diagram Representations of Cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a pair of natural numbers $k, l$, a $(k,l)$-colouring of a graph $G$ is a partition of the vertex set of $G$ into (possibly empty) sets $S_1, S_2, \dots, S_k$, $C_1, C_2, \dots, C_l$ such that each set $S_i$ is an independent set and each set $C_j$ induces a clique in $G$. The $(k,l)$-colouring problem, which is NP-complete in general, has been studied for special graph classes such as chordal graphs, cographs and line graphs. Let $\hatκ(G) = (κ_0(G),κ_1(G),\dots,κ_{θ(G)-1}(G))$ and $\hatλ(G) = (λ_0(G),λ_1(G),\dots,λ_{χ(G)-1}(G))$ where $κ_l(G)$ (respectively, $λ_k(G)$) is the minimum $k$ (respectively, $l$) such that $G$ has a $(k,l)$-colouring. We prove that $\hatκ(G)$ and $\hatλ(G)$ are a pair of conjugate sequences for every graph $G$ and when $G$ is a cograph, the number of vertices in $G$ is equal to the sum of the entries in $\hatκ(G)$ or in $\hatλ(G)$. Using the decomposition property of cographs we show that every cograph can be represented by Ferrers diagram. We devise algorithms which compute $\hatκ(G)$ for cographs $G$ and find an induced subgraph in $G$ that can be used to certify the non-$(k,l)$-colourability of $G$.

Coloring the normalized Laplacian for oriented hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 629:192-207 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.
An Extremal Problem on Rainbow Spanning Trees in Graphs
A spanning tree of an edge-colored graph is rainbow provided that each of its edges receives a distinct color. In this paper we consider the natural extremal problem of maximizing and minimizing the number of rainbow spanning trees in a graph $G$. Such a question clearly needs restrictions on the colorings to be meaningful. For edge-colorings using $n-1$ colors and without rainbow cycles, known in the literature as JL-colorings, there turns out to be a particularly nice way of counting the rainbow spanning trees and we solve this problem completely for JL-colored complete graphs $K_n$ and complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,m}$. In both cases, we find tight upper and lower bounds; the lower bound for $K_n$, in particular, proves to have an unexpectedly chaotic and interesting behavior. We further investigate this question for JL-colorings of general graphs and prove several results including characterizing graphs which have JL-colorings achieving the lowest possible number of rainbow spanning trees. We establish other results for general $n-1$ colorings, including providing an analogue of Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem which yields a way of counting rainbow spanning trees in a general graph $G$.

The minimum degree of minimal Ramsey graphs for cliques
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc., 54 (2022): 1827-1838 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that $s_r(K_k) = O(k^5 r^{5/2})$, where $s_r(K_k)$ is the Ramsey parameter introduced by Burr, Erdős and Lovász in 1976, which is defined as the smallest minimum degree of a graph $G$ such that any $r$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic $K_k$, whereas no proper subgraph of $G$ has this property. The construction used in our proof relies on a group theoretic model of generalised quadrangles introduced by Kantor in 1980.

A Novel Approach for the Process Planning and Scheduling Problem Using the Concept of Maximum Weighted Independent Set
Process Planning and Scheduling (PPS) is an essential and practical topic but a very intractable problem in manufacturing systems. Many research use iterative methods to solve such problems; however, they cannot achieve satisfactory results in both quality and computational speed. Other studies formulate scheduling problems as a graph coloring problem (GCP) or its extensions, but these formulations are limited to certain types of scheduling problems. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to formulate a general type of the PPS problem with resource allocation and process planning integrated towards a typical objective, minimizing the makespan. The PPS problem is formulated into an undirected weighted conflicting graph, where nodes represent operations and their resources; edges represent constraints, and weight factors are guidelines for the node selection at each time slot. Then, the Maximum Weighted Independent Set (MWIS) problem can be solved to find the best set of operations with their desired resources for each discrete time slot. This proposed approach solves the PPS problem directly with minimum iterations. We establish that the proposed approach always returns a feasible optimum or near-optimum solution to the PPS problem. The different weight configurations of the proposed approach for solving the PPS problem are tested on a real-world PPS example and further designated test instances to evaluate the scalability, accuracy, and robustness.

All finite sets are Ramsey in the maximum norm
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e55 • View Publication • BIB
For two metric spaces $\mathbb X$ and $\mathcal Y$, the chromatic number $χ(\mathbb X;\mathcal Y)$ of $\mathbb X$ with forbidden $\mathcal Y$ is the smallest $k$ such that there is a coloring of the points of $\mathbb X$ with $k$ colors and no monochromatic copy of $\mathcal Y$. In this paper, we show that for each finite metric space $\mathcal{M}$ that contains at least two points the value $χ\left(\mathbb R^n_\infty; \mathcal M \right)$ grows exponentially with $n$. We also provide explicit lower and upper bounds for some special $\mathcal M$.

Colouring homogeneous structures
A relational structure is indivisible if for every partition of its set of elements into two parts there exists an embedding of the structure into one of the parts of the partition. A relational structure is homogeneous if every embedding of a finite induced substructure to a finite induced substructure extends to an automorphism. This article establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for Henson type, see [4], homogeneous structures to be indivisible.

Seurat games on Stockmeyer graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 99, 278 - 311, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
We define a family of vertex colouring games played over a pair of graphs or digraphs $(G,H)$ by players $\forall$ and $\exists$. These games arise from work on a longstanding open problem in algebraic logic. It is conjectured that there is a natural number $n$ such that $\forall$ always has a winning strategy in the game with $n$ colours whenever $G\not\cong H$. This is related to the reconstruction conjecture for graphs and the degree-associated reconstruction conjecture for digraphs. We show that the reconstruction conjecture implies our game conjecture with $n=3$ for graphs, and the same is true for the degree-associated reconstruction conjecture and our conjecture for digraphs. We show (for any $k<ω$) that the 2-colour game can distinguish certain non-isomorphic pairs of graphs that cannot be distinguished by the $k$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm. We also show that the 2-colour game can distinguish the non-isomorphic pairs of graphs in the families defined by Stockmeyer as counterexamples to the original digraph reconstruction conjecture.

A general framework for hypergraph colouring
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Lovász Local Lemma is a powerful probabilistic technique for proving the existence of combinatorial objects. It is especially useful for colouring graphs and hypergraphs with bounded maximum degree. This paper presents a general theorem for colouring hypergraphs that in many instances matches or slightly improves upon the bounds obtained using the Lovász Local Lemma. Moreover, the theorem directly shows that there are exponentially many colourings. The elementary and self-contained proof is inspired by a recent result for nonrepetitive colourings by Rosenfeld [2020]. We apply our general theorem in the setting of proper hypergraph colouring, proper graph colouring, independent transversals, star colouring, nonrepetitive colouring, frugal colouring, Ramsey number lower bounds, and for $k$-SAT.

Truly asymptotic lower bounds for online vector bin packing
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work, we consider online vector bin packing. It is known that no algorithm can have a competitive ratio of $o(d/\log^2 d)$ in the absolute sense, though upper bounds for this problem were always shown in the asymptotic sense. Since variants of bin packing are traditionally studied with respect to the asymptotic measure and since the two measures are different, we focus on the asymptotic measure and prove new lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio. The existing lower bounds prior to this work were much smaller than $3$ even for very large dimensions. We significantly improve the best known lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio (and as a byproduct, on the absolute competitive ratio) for online vector packing of vectors with $d \geq 3$ dimensions, for every such dimension $d$. To obtain these results, we use several different constructions, one of which is an adaptive construction showing a lower bound of $Ω(\sqrt{d})$. Our main result is that the lower bound of $Ω(d/\log^2 d)$ on the competitive ratio holds also in the asymptotic sense. The last result requires a careful adaptation of constructions for online coloring rather than simple black-box reductions.
List $k$-Colouring $P_t$-Free Graphs: a Mim-width Perspective
Published in Information Processing Letters 173 (2022), 106168 • View Publication • BIB
A colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $c\colon V\to \{1,2,\ldots\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. The {\sc List $k$-Colouring} problem is to decide whether a graph $G=(V,E)$ with a list $L(u)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ for each $u\in V$ has a colouring $c$ such that $c(u)\in L(u)$ for every $u\in V$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and let $K_{1,s}^1$ be the graph obtained from the $(s+1)$-vertex star $K_{1,s}$ by subdividing each of its edges exactly once.Recently, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and Zhong (DM 2020) proved that List $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs for every $t\geq 1$ and $s\geq 1$. We generalize their result to List $k$-Colouring for every $k\geq 1$. Our result also generalizes the known result that for every $k\geq 1$ and $s\geq 0$, List $k$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs, which was proven for $s=0$ by Hoàng, Kamiński, Lozin, Sawada, and Shu (Algorithmica 2010) and for every $s\geq 1$ by Couturier, Golovach, Kratsch and Paulusma (Algorithmica 2015). We show our result by proving boundedness of an underlying width parameter. Namely, we show that for every $k\geq 1$, $s\geq 1$, $t\geq 1$, the class of $(K_k,K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs has bounded mim-width and that a corresponding branch decomposition is "quickly computable" for these graphs.

Gallai-Ramsey numbers for graphs with five vertices of chromatic number four
Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\ge1$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we determine the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for connected graphs with five vertices of chromatic number four.
Determining Number and Cost of Generalized Mycielskian Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $S$ of vertices is a determining set for a graph $G$ if every automorphism of $G$ is uniquely determined by its action on $S$. The size of a smallest determining set for $G$ is called its determining number, $Det(G)$. A graph $G$ is said to be $d$-distinguishable if there is a coloring of the vertices with $d$ colors so that only the trivial automorphism preserves the color classes. The smallest such $d$ is the distinguishing number, $Dist(G)$. If $Dist(G) = 2$, the cost of 2-distinguishing, $ρ(G)$, is the size of a smallest color class over all 2-distinguishing colorings of $G$. The Mycielskian, $μ(G)$, of a graph $G$ is constructed by adding a shadow master vertex $w$, and for each vertex $v_i$ of $G$ adding a shadow vertex $u_i$ with edges so that the neighborhood of $u_i$ in $μ(G)$ is the same as the neighborhood of $v_i$ in $G$ with the addition of $w$. That is, $N(u_i)=N_G(v_i)\cup\{w\}$. The generalized Mycielskian $μ^{(t)}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a Mycielskian graph with $t$ layers of shadow vertices, each with edges to layers above and below, and $w$ only adjacent to the top layer of shadow vertices. A graph is twin-free if it has no pair of vertices with the same set of neighbors. This paper examines the determining number and, when relevant, the cost of 2-distinguishing for Mycielskians and generalized Mycielskians of simple graphs with no isolated vertices. In particular, if $G \neq K_2$ is twin-free with no isolated vertices, then $Det(μ^{(t)}(G)) = Det(G)$. Further, if $Det(G) = k \geq 2$ and $t \ge k-1$, then $Dist(μ^{(t)}(G))=2$, and $Det(μ^{(t)}(G)) = ρ(μ^{(t)}(G))= k$. For $G$ with twins, we develop a framework using quotient graphs with respect to equivalence classes of twin vertices to give bounds on the determining number of Mycielskians. Moreover, we identify classes of graphs with twins for which $Det(μ^{(t)}(G)) = (t{+}1) Det(G)$.
