Sketches, moves and partitions: counting regions of deformations of reflection arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The collection of reflecting hyperplanes of a finite Coxeter group is called a reflection arrangement and it appears in many subareas of combinatorics and representation theory. We focus on the problem of counting regions of reflection arrangements and their deformations. Inspired by the recent work of Bernardi, we show that the notion of moves and sketches can be used to provide a uniform and explicit bijection between regions of (the Catalan deformation of) a reflection arrangement and certain non-nesting partitions. We then use the exponential formula to describe a statistic on these partitions such that distribution is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial. Finally, we consider a sub-arrangement of type C arrangement called the threshold arrangement and its Catalan and Shi deformations.

One-element Extensions of Hyperplane Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify one-element extensions of a hyperplane arrangement by the induced adjoint arrangement. Based on the classification, several kinds of combinatorial invariants including Whitney polynomials, characteristic polynomials, Whitney numbers and face numbers, are constants on those strata associated with the induced adjoint arrangement, and also order-preserving with respect to the intersection lattice of the induced adjoint arrangement. As a byproduct, we obtain a convolution formula on the characteristic polynomials $χ(\mathcal{A}+H_{\bmα,a},t)$ when $\mathcal{A}$ is defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ or a rational arrangement.

New constructions of non-regular cospectral graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider two types of joins of graphs $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, $G_{1}\veebar G_{2}$ - the Neighbors Splitting Join and $G_{1}\underset{=}{\lor}G_{2}$ - the Non Neighbors Splitting Join, and compute the adjacency characteristic polynomial, the Laplacian characteristic polynomial and the signless Laplacian characteristic polynomial of these joins. When $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ are regular, we compute the adjacency spectrum, the Laplacian spectrum, the signless Laplacian spectrum of $G_{1}\underset{=}{\lor}G_{2}$ and the normalized Laplacian spectrum of $G_{1}\veebar G_{2}$ and $G_{1}\underset{=}{\lor}G_{2}$. We use these results to construct non regular, non isomorphic graphs that are cospectral with respect to the four matrices: adjacency, Laplacian , signless Laplacian and normalized Laplacian.

Algebraic degrees of quasi-abelian semi-Cayley digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a digraph $Γ$, if $F$ is the smallest field that contains all roots of the characteristic polynomial of the adjacency matrix of $Γ$, then $F$ is called the splitting field of $Γ$. The extension degree of $F$ over the field of rational numbers $\mathbb{Q}$ is said to be the algebraic degree of $Γ$. A digraph is a semi-Cayley digraph over a group $G$ if it admits $G$ as a semiregular automorphism group with two orbits of equal size. A semi-Cayley digraph $\mathrm{SC}(G,T_{11},T_{22},T_{12},T_{21})$ is called quasi-abelian if each of $T_{11},T_{22},T_{12}$ and $T_{21}$ is a union of some conjugacy classes of $G$. This paper determines the splitting field and the algebraic degree of a quasi-abelian semi-Cayley digraph over any finite group in terms of irreducible characters of groups. This work generalizes the previous works on algebraic degrees of Cayley graphs over abelian groups and any group having a subgroup of index 2, and semi-Cayley digraphs over abelian groups.
Induced log-concavity of equivariant matroid invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the notion of equivariant log-concavity, we introduce the concept of induced log-concavity for a sequence of representations of a finite group. For an equivariant matroid equipped with a symmetric group action or a finite general linear group action, we transform the problem of proving the induced log-concavity of matroid invariants to that of proving the Schur positivity of symmetric functions. We prove the induced log-concavity of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids equipped with the action of a finite general linear group, as well as that of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids equipped with the action of a symmetric group. As a consequence of the former, we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids, thus providing further positive evidence for Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield's log-concavity conjecture on the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. From the latter we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids, which was recently proved by Xie and Zhang by using a computer algebra approach. We also establish the induced log-concavity of the equivariant characteristic polynomials and the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for $q$-niform matroids and uniform matroids.

Asymptotic analysis of the characteristic polynomial for the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble
We consider the complex Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble, a family of random matrix models introduced by Girko that interpolates between the Ginibre Ensemble and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and such that its empirical spectral measure converges to the uniform measure on an ellipse. We show the convergence in law of its normalised characteristic polynomial outside of this ellipse. Our proof contains two main steps. We first show the tightness of the normalised characteristic polynomial using the link between the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and Hermite polynomials. This part relies on the uniform control of the Hermite kernel which is derived from the recent work of Akemann, Duits and Molag. In the second step, we identify the limiting object as the exponential of a Gaussian analytic function. The limit expression is derived from the convergence of traces of Chebyshev polynomials of random matrices by the method of moments. These traces of Chebyshev polynomials appear naturally as a kind of centered version, or normal ordering, of the traces of the monomials. This work answers the interpolation problem raised in the work of Bordenave, Chafa{ï} and the second author of this paper for the integrable case of the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and is therefore a fist step towards the conjectured universality of this result.

On a relationship between the characteristic and matching polynomials of a uniform hypertree
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hypertree is a connected hypergraph without cycles. Further a hypertree is called an $r$-tree if, additionally, it is $r$-uniform. Note that 2-trees are just ordinary trees. A classical result states that for any 2-tree $T$ with characteristic polynomial $φ_T(λ)$ and matching polynomial $\varphi_T(λ)$, then $φ_T(λ)=\varphi_T(λ).$ More generally, suppose $\mathcal{T}$ is an $r$-tree of size $m$ with $r\geq2$. In this paper, we extend the above classical relationship to $r$-trees and establish that \[ φ_{\mathcal{T}}(λ)=\prod_{H \sqsubseteq \mathcal{T}}\varphi_{H}(λ)^{a_{H}}, \] where the product is over all connected subgraphs $H$ of $\mathcal{T}$, and the exponent $a_{H}$ of the factor $\varphi_{H}(λ)$ can be written as \[ a_H=b^{m-e(H)-|\partial(H)|}c^{e(H)}(b-c)^{|\partial(H)|}, \] where $e(H)$ is the size of $H$, $\partial(H)$ is the boundary of $H$, and $b=(r-1)^{r-1}, c=r^{r-2}$. In particular, for $r=2$, the above correspondence reduces to the classical result for ordinary trees. In addition, we resolve a conjecture by Clark-Cooper [{\em Electron. J. Combin.}, 2018] and show that for any subgraph $H$ of an $r$-tree $\mathcal{T}$ with $r\geq3$, $\varphi_H(λ)$ divides $φ_{\mathcal{T}}(λ)$, and additionally $φ_H(λ)$ divides $φ_{\mathcal{T}}(λ)$, if either $r\geq 4$ or $H$ is connected when $r=3$. Moreover, a counterexample is given for the case when $H$ is a disconnected subgraph of a 3-tree.

The Spectral Geometry of the Mesh Matrices of Graphs
The mesh matrix $Mesh(G,T_0)$ of a connected finite graph $G=(V(G),E(G))=(vertices, edges) \ of \ G$ of with respect to a choice of a spanning tree $T_0 \subset G$ is defined and studied. It was introduced by Trent \cite{Trent1,Trent2}. Its characteristic polynomial $det(X \cdot Id -Mesh(G,T_0))$ is shown to equal $Σ_{j=0}^{N} \ (-1)^j \ ST_{j}(G,T_0)\ (X-1)^{N-j} \ (\star)$ \ where $ST_j(G,T_0)$ is the number of spanning trees of $G$ meeting $E(G-T_0)$ in j edges and $N=|E(G-T_0)|$. As a consequence, there are Tutte-type deletion-contraction formulae for computing this polynomial. Additionally, $Mesh(G,T_0) -Id$ is of the special form $Y^t \cdot Y$; so the eigenvalues of the mesh matrix $Mesh(G,T_0)$ are all real and are furthermore be shown to be $\ge +1$. It is shown that $Y \cdot Y^t$, called the mesh Laplacian, is a generalization of the standard graph Kirchhoff Laplacian $Δ(H)= Deg -Adj$ of a graph $H$.For example, $(\star)$ generalizes the all minors matrix tree theorem for graphs $H$ and gives a deletion-contraction formula for the characteristic polynomial of $Δ(H)$. This generalization is explored in some detail. The smallest positive eigenvalue of the mesh Laplacian, a measure of flux, is estimated, thus extending the classical inequality for the Kirchoff Laplacian of graphs.

Recursions and characteristic polynomials of the Rows of the Circuit Array
Published • View Publication • BIB
The 2022 Fibonacci Conference held in Sarajevo introduced the Circuit Array, a two-dimensional array associated with the resistance labels of electrical circuits whose underlying graph when embedded in the Cartesian plane has the form of a triangular n-grid. The presentation used row reduction, a computational method alternative to the traditional method using the Laplacian. The presentation explored reconsidering the Circuit Array in terms of polynomials instead of numbers as a means to facilitate finding patterns. The present paper shows the fruitfulness of this approach. The main result of the current paper states that the characteristic polynomials corresponding to the recursions of single or multi-variable polynomial formulations of the Circuit Array exclusively have powers of 9 as roots. The proof methodology uses the approach of annihilators. Several initial cases and one major sub-case are proven.

Addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials and $B$-sequences of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials, which have two important specializations. Namely, one is to the characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arangements, and the other to the Poincarè polynomials of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. One of the main tools to show them is the free surjection theorem which confirms the right exactness of several important exact sequences among logarithmic modules. Moreover, we introduce a generalized polynomial $B$-theory to the higher order logarithmic modules, whose origin was due to Terao.
The spectrum of symmetric decorated paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main result of this paper states that in a rooted product of a path with rooted graphs which are disposed in a somewhat mirror-symmetric fashion, there are distinct eigenvalues supported in the end vertices of the path which are too close to each other: their difference is smaller than the square root of two in the even distance case, and smaller than one in the odd distance case. As a first application, we show that these end vertices cannot be involved in a quantum walk phenomenon known as perfect state transfer, significantly strengthening a recent result by two of the authors along with Godsil and van Bommel. For a second application, we show that there is no balanced integral tree of odd diameter bigger than three, answering a question raised by Híc and Nedela in 1998. Our main technique involves manipulating ratios of characteristic polynomials of graphs and subgraphs into continued fractions, and exploring in detail their analytic properties. We will also make use of a result due to Pólya and Szegö about functions that preserve the Lebesgue measure, which as far as we know is a novel application to combinatorics. In the end, we connect our machinery to a recently introduced algorithm to locate eigenvalues of trees, and with our approach we show that any graph which contains two vertices separated by a unique path that is the subdivision of a bridge with at least six inner vertices cannot be integral. As a minor corollary this implies that most trees are not integral, but we believe no one thought otherwise.

Recursive properties of the characteristic polynomial of weighted lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we describe properties of the characteristic polynomial of a weighted lattice and show that it has a recursive description, which we use to obtain results on the critical exponent of $q$-polymatroids. We give a Critical Theorem for representable $q$-polymatroids and we provide a lower bound on the critical exponent. We show that $q$-polymatroids arising from certain families of rank-metric codes attain this lower bound.

A Recurrence Relation Associated with Unit-Primitive Matrices
In this paper we obtained several properties that the characteristic polynomials of the unit-primitive matrix satisfy. In addition, using these properties we have shown that the recurrence relation given as in the formula (1) is true. In fact, Xin and Zhong([4]) showed it earlier. However, we provide simpler method here.

Chain Tutte polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.
On the divisibility of H-shape trees and their spectral determination
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is divisible by a graph $H$ if the characteristic polynomial of $G$ is divisible by that of $H$. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition for recursive graphs to be divisible by a path is used to show that the H-shape graph $P_{2,2;n-4}^{2,n-7}$, known to be (for $n$ large enough) the minimizer of the spectral radius among the graphs of order $n$ and diameter $n-5$, is determined by its adjacency spectrum if and only if $n \neq 10,13,15$.

Lorentzian polynomials on cones
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the theory of hyperbolic polynomials and Hodge theory, we develop the theory of Lorentzian polynomials on cones. This notion captures the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree zero and one. Motivated by fundamental properties of volume polynomials of Chow rings of simplicial fans, we define a class of multivariate polynomials which we call hereditary polynomials. We give a complete and easily checkable characterization of hereditary Lorentzian polynomials. This characterization is used to give elementary and simple proofs of the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture for the characteristic polynomial of a matroid, and the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for convex bodies. We then characterize Chow rings of simplicial fans which satisfy the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree zero and one, and we prove that this property only depends on the support of the fan. Several different characterizations of Lorentzian polynomials on cones are provided.
Inductive and divisional posets
Published in J. London Math. Soc., 109 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.

A study on $k$-coalescence of two graphs
Published in LE MATEMATICHE 2023 • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-coalescence of two graphs is obtained by merging a $k$-clique of each graph. The $A_α$-matrix of a graph is the convex combination of its degree matrix and adjacency matrix. In this paper, we present some structural properties of a non-regular graph which is obtained from the $k$-coalescence of two graphs. Also, we derive the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $k$-coalescence of two graphs and then compute the $A_α$-spectra of $k$-coalescence of two complete graphs. In addition, we estimate the $A_α$-energy of $k$-coalescence of two complete graphs. Furthermore, we obtain some topological indices of vertex coalescence of two graphs, and as an application, we determine some indices of some family of graphs. From these results, we calculate the Wiener index, hyper-Wiener index etc. of the organic compound 1,2-dicyclohexylethane(\ce{C_{14}H_{26}}).
Integrability of matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concepts of differentiation and integration for matrices are known. As far as each matrix is differentiable, it is not clear a priori whether a given matrix is integrable or not. Recently some progress was obtained for diagonalizable matrices, however general problem remained open. In this paper, we present a full solution of the integrability problem. Namely, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a given matrix to be integrable in terms of its characteristic polynomial. Furthermore, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of integrable and non-integrable matrices with given geometric multiplicities of eigenvalues. Our approach relies on properties of some special classes of polynomials, namely, Shabat polynomials and conservative polynomials, arising in number theory and dynamics.

On tropical Hodge theory for tropical varieties
To prove log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials of matroids, Adiprasito-Huh-Katz proved the Kähler package (the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations) for their Chow rings. Amini-Piquerez generalized it to tropical cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties. Their proofs were combinatorial. In this paper, we establish tropical Hodge theory except for regularity of solutions of Laplacian, and give a conditional proof of the Kähler package in the same way as compact Kähler manifolds.
