Permanents of Circulants: a Transfer Matrix Approach (Expanded Version)
Published • View Publication • BIB
Calculating the permanent of a (0,1) matrix is a #P-complete problem but there are some classes of structured matrices for which the permanent is calculable in polynomial time. The most well-known example is the fixed-jump (0,1) circulant matrix which, using algebraic techniques, was shown by Minc to satisfy a constant-coefficient fixed-order recurrence relation. In this note we show how, by interpreting the problem as calculating the number of cycle-covers in a directed circulant graph, it is straightforward to reprove Minc's result using combinatorial methods. This is a two step process: the first step is to show that the cycle-covers of directed circulant graphs can be evaluated using a transfer matrix argument. The second is to show that the associated transfer matrices, while very large, actually have much smaller characteristic polynomials than would a-priori be expected. An important consequence of this new viewpoint is that, in combination with a new recursive decomposition of circulant-graphs, it permits extending Minc's result to calculating the permanent of the much larger class of circulant matrices with non-fixed (but linear) jumps. It also permits us to count other types of structures in circulant graphs, e.g., Hamiltonian Cycles.

Coloring complexes and arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Steingrimsson's coloring complex and Jonsson's unipolar complex are interpreted in terms of hyperplane arrangements. This viewpoint leads to short proofs that all coloring complexes and a large class of unipolar complexes have convex ear decompositions. These convex ear decompositions impose strong new restrictions on the chromatic polynomials of all finite graphs. Similar results are obtained for characteristic polynomials of submatroids of type B_n arrangements.

The weighted complexity and the determinant functions of graphs
Published in Linear algebra and its applications, 433 (2010), 348-355 • View Publication • BIB
The complexity of a graph can be obtained as a derivative of a variation of the zeta function or a partial derivative of its generalized characteristic polynomial evaluated at a point [\textit{J. Combin. Theory Ser. B}, 74 (1998), pp. 408--410]. A similar result for the weighted complexity of weighted graphs was found using a determinant function [\textit{J. Combin. Theory Ser. B}, 89 (2003), pp. 17--26]. In this paper, we consider the determinant function of two variables and discover a condition that the weighted complexity of a weighted graph is a partial derivative of the determinant function evaluated at a point. Consequently, we simply obtain the previous results and disclose a new formula for the Bartholdi zeta function. We also consider a new weighted complexity, for which the weights of spanning trees are taken as the sum of weights of edges in the tree, and find a similar formula for this new weighted complexity. As an application, we compute the weighted complexities of the product of the complete graphs.

Generalized characteristic polynomials of graph bundles
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 429 (2008) 688--697 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we find computational formulae for generalized characteristic polynomials of graph bundles. We show that the number of spanning trees in a graph is the partial derivative (at (0,1)) of the generalized characteristic polynomial of the graph. Since the reciprocal of the Bartholdi zeta function of a graph can be derived from the generalized characteristic polynomial of a graph, consequently, the Bartholdi zeta function of a graph bundle can be computed by using our computational formulae.

Periodicity of hyperplane arrangements with integral coefficients modulo positive integers
Published in J. Alg. Combin. 27 (2008), 317-330 • View Publication • BIB
We study central hyperplane arrangements with integral coefficients modulo positive integers $q$. We prove that the cardinality of the complement of the hyperplanes is a quasi-polynomial in two ways, first via the theory of elementary divisors and then via the theory of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. This result is useful for determining the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding real arrangement. With the former approach, we also prove that intersection lattices modulo $q$ are periodic except for a finite number of $q$'s.

Rigidity and volume preserving deformation on degenerate simplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a degenerate $(n+1)$-simplex in a $d$-dimensional space $M^d$ (Euclidean, spherical or hyperbolic space, and $d\geq n$), for each $k$, $1\leq k\leq n$, Radon's theorem induces a partition of the set of $k$-faces into two subsets. We prove that if the vertices of the simplex vary smoothly in $M^d$ for $d=n$, and the volumes of $k$-faces in one subset are constrained only to decrease while in the other subset only to increase, then any sufficiently small motion must preserve the volumes of all $k$-faces; and this property still holds in $M^d$ for $d\geq n+1$ if an invariant $c_{k-1}(α^{k-1})$ of the degenerate simplex has the desired sign. This answers a question posed by the author, and the proof relies on an invariant $c_k(ω)$ we discovered for any $k$-stress $ω$ on a cell complex in $M^d$. We introduce a characteristic polynomial of the degenerate simplex by defining $f(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n+1}(-1)^{i}c_i(α^i)x^{n+1-i}$, and prove that the roots of $f(x)$ are real for the Euclidean case. Some evidence suggests the same conjecture for the hyperbolic case.

On the elementary symmetric functions of a sum of matrices
Published in Journal of Algebra, Number Theory: Advances and Applications Volume 1, Number 2, 2009, Pages 99-112 • Search Publication
Often in mathematics it is useful to summarize a multivariate phenomenon with a single number and in fact, the determinant -- which is represented by det -- is one of the simplest cases. In fact, this number it is defined only for square matrices and a lot of its properties are very well-known. For instance, the determinant is a multiplicative function, i.e. det(AB)=detA detB, but it is not, in general, an additive function. Another interesting function in the matrix analysis is the characteristic polynomial -- in fact, given a matrix A, this function is defined by $p_A(t)=det(tI-A)$ where I is the identity matrix -- which elements are, up a sign, the elementary symmetric functions associated to the eigenvalues of the matrix A. In the present paper new expressions related with the determinant of sum of matrices and the elementary symmetric functions are given. Moreover, the connection with the Mobius function and the partial ordered sets (poset) is presented. Finally, a problem related with the determinant of sum of matrices is solved.

A combinatorial reciprocity theorem for hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a nonnegative integer $m$ and a finite collection ${\mathcal A}$ of linear forms on ${\mathbb Q}^d$, the arrangement of affine hyperplanes in ${\mathbb Q}^d$ defined by the equations $α(x) = k$ for $α\in {\mathcal A}$ and integers $k \in [-m, m]$ is denoted by ${\mathcal A}^m$. It is proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of ${\mathcal A}^m$ are quasi-polynomials in $m$ and that they satisfy a simple combinatorial reciprocity law.

Lattice point counts for the Shi arrangement and other affinographic hyperplane arrangements
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. A, 114 (2007), no. 1, 97-109. • View Publication • BIB
Hyperplanes of the form x_j = x_i + c are called affinographic. For an affinographic hyperplane arrangement in R^n, such as the Shi arrangement, we study the function f(M) that counts integral points in [1,M]^n that do not lie in any hyperplane of the arrangement. We show that f(M) is a piecewise polynomial function of positive integers M, composed of terms that appear gradually as M increases. Our approach is to convert the problem to one of counting integral proper colorations of a rooted integral gain graph. An application is to interval coloring in which the interval of available colors for vertex v_i has the form [(h_i)+1,M]. A related problem takes colors modulo M; the number of proper modular colorations is a different piecewise polynomial that for large M becomes the characteristic polynomial of the arrangement (by which means Athanasiadis previously obtained that polynomial). We also study this function for all positive moduli.

Moments of characteristic polynomials for compact symmetric spaces and Jack polynomials
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 40 (2007) 13567-13586 • View Publication • BIB
We express the averages of products of characteristic polynomials for random matrix ensembles associated with compact symmetric spaces in terms of Jack polynomials or Heckman and Opdam's Jacobi polynomials depending on the root system of the space. We also give explicit expressions for the asymptotic behavior of these averages in the limit as the matrix size goes to infinity.

Multivariable Christoffel-Darboux Kernels and Characteristic Polynomials of Random Hermitian Matrices
Published in SIGMA 2 (2006), 085, 12 pages • View Publication • BIB
We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).

Free Arrangements over Finite Field

The freeness of hyperplane arrangements in a three dimensional vector space over finite field is discussed. We prove that if the number of hyperplanes is greater than some bound, then the freeness is determined by the characteristic polynomial.

M-matrices satisfy Newton's inequalities
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 133 (2005), 711-717 • View Publication • BIB
Newton's inequalities $c_n^2 \ge c_{n-1}c_{n+1}$ are shown to hold for the normalized coefficients $c_n$ of the characteristic polynomial of any $M$- or inverse $M$-matrix. They are derived by establishing first an auxiliary set of inequalities also valid for both of these classes. They are also used to derive some new necessary conditions on the eigenvalues of nonnegative matrices.

Kocay's lemma, Whitney's theorem, and some polynomial invariant reconstruction problems
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 12 (2005), #R63. • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph G, an incidence matrix N(G) is defined for the set of distinct isomorphism types of induced subgraphs of G. If Ulam's conjecture is true, then every graph invariant must be reconstructible from this matrix, even when the graphs indexing the rows and the columns of N(G) are unspecified. It is proved that the characteristic polynomial, the rank polynomial, and the number of spanning trees of a graph are reconstructible from its N-matrix. These results are stronger than the original results of Tutte in the sense that actual subgraphs are not used. It is also proved that the characteristic polynomial of a graph with minimum degree 1 can be computed from the characteristic polynomials of all its induced proper subgraphs. The ideas in Kocay's lemma play a crucial role in most proofs. Here Kocay's lemma is used to prove Whitney's subgraph expansion theorem in a simple manner. The reconstructibility of the characteristic polynomial is then demonstrated as a direct consequence of Whitney's theorem as formulated here.

Link complexes of subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a simplicial hyperplane arrangement H and a subspace arrangement A embedded in H, we define a simplicial complex Delta_{A,H} as the subdivision of the link of A induced by H. In particular, this generalizes Steingrimsson's coloring complex of a graph. We do the following: (1) When A is a hyperplane arrangement, Delta_{A,H} is shown to be shellable. As a special case, we answer affirmatively a question of Steingrimsson on coloring complexes. (2) For H being a Coxeter arrangement of type A or B we obtain a close connection between the Hilbert series of the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta_{A,H} and the characteristic polynomial of A. This extends results of Steingrimsson and provides an interpretation of chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs and signed graphs in terms of Hilbert polynomials.

Damped random walks and the characteristic polynomial of the weighted Laplacian on a graph
For $λ>0$, we define a $λ$-damped random walk to be a random walk that is started from a random vertex of a graph and stopped at each step with probability $\fracλ{1+λ}$, otherwise continued with probability $\frac{1}{1+λ}$. We use the Aldous-Broder algorithm (\cite{aldous, broder}) of generating a random spanning tree and the Matrix-tree theorem to relate the values of the characteristic polynomial of the Laplacian at $\pm λ$ and the stationary measures of the sets of nodes visited by $i$ independent $λ$-damped random walks for $i \in \N$. As a corollary, we obtain a new characterization of the non-zero eigenvalues of the Weighted Graph Laplacian.

Counting formulas associated with some random matrix averages
Published • View Publication • BIB
Moments of secular and inverse secular coefficients, averaged over random matrices from classical groups, are related to the enumeration of non-negative matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Similar random matrix averages are related to certain configurations of vicious random walkers and to the enumeration of plane partitions. The combinatorial meaning of the average of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian and Wishart matrices is also investigated, and consequently several simple universality results are derived.
Signature of rotors
Rotors were introduced in Graph Theory by W.Tutte. The concept was adapted to Knot Theory as a generalization of mutation by Anstee, Przytycki and Rolfsen in 1987. In this paper we show that Tristram-Levine signature is preserved by orientation-preserving rotations. Moreover, we show that any link invariant obtained from the characteristic polynomial of Goeritz matrix, including Murasugi signature, is not changed by rotations. In 2001, P. Traczyk showed that the Conway polynomials of any pair of orientation-preserving rotants coincide. But it was still an open problem if an orientation-reversing rotation preserves Conway polynomial. We show that there is a pair of orientation-reversing rotants with different Conway polynomials. This provides a negative solution to the problem.

Exponents for B-stable ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a simple algebraic group over the complex numbers containing a Borel subgroup B. Given a B-stable ideal I in the nilradical of the Lie algebra of B, we define natural numbers $m_1, m_2, ..., m_k$ which we call ideal exponents. We then propose two conjectures where these exponents arise, proving these conjectures in types A_n, B_n, C_n and some other types. When I is zero, we recover the usual exponents of G by Kostant and one of our conjectures reduces to a well-known factorization of the Poincare polynomial of the Weyl group. The other conjecture reduces to a well-known result of Arnold-Brieskorn on the factorization of the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding Coxeter hyperplane arrangement.

Matrix methods for arithmetic functions
We apply matrix methods to arithmetic functions by associating matrices to the functions in a manner drawn from the theory of symmetric functions. Then we study the characteristic polynomials of the associated matrices.
